LITERACY AWARDS RECOGNISE TENACITY The English Department’s Literacy Awards were held in the Library on Wednesday afternoon, at which students were recognised for displaying tenacity in their studies in English this year. One student from each Year 9 and Year 10 English class was presented with the award and a book by Year 10 Associate Dean Ms Selina Hundley and Literacy Co-ordinator and Year 12 Associate Dean, Miss Aleishia Orange. “Research has shown that tenacity, or what is commonly referred to as 'grit' (determination, passion and perseverance), contributes more to success than talent or IQ do,” said Miss Orange. “Success is not a straight line. Real success comes from what we learn from the challenges and setbacks, and through continuing to persevere despite these hardships.” Congratulations to all the students who received awards at this event.

Junior Boys Lost 4-2 against Rutherford Junior Girls Won 2-1 against Rutherford Junior Boys The Junior Boys' Touch team placed 3rd in the Western Zone Touch Competition, beating Waitakere 2-1 in extra time drop off. The score at the conclusion of the game was 1-1 and the drop off went down to 4v4 before Avondale edged out and scored first.

Junior Boys' Touch Team
2nd XI Boys: The boys won their last game on Saturday by 9 wickets against Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart batted first, 57 all out. Avondale finished on 61/ 1, winning the game by 9 wickets. That places us 5th in the senior grade.

RUGBY SPORTING SUCCESS Congratulations to the following five Avondale College students: Carlos Young-Aso, Reuben Tuala-Dawson, Jacob Tuala-Dawson, Tyler Latimer and Tapene Te Moni, who were part of the Auckland Maori U15s Rugby Union Team that came second at the recent Te Hiku O Te Ika Tournament. Also, well done on winning the Haka Trophy!

AUTHOR INSPIRES STUDENTS On Monday lunchtime our Library Book Club had a fascinating visit from kiwi author David Riley, who writes books about inspirational New Zealand and Pacific Island heroes. David talked about how books can change lives, telling our students stories of how young people turned their lives around and became world famous. He inspired our students with his key ideas: • There is talent in all of us, don’t doubt yourself • Family helps: find your support person and listen to their advice • Books and education lead to bigger things in life This visit was provided through the New Zealand Book Council, with the support of Creative New Zealand.
