B GOLD FOR GABI AT DON OLIVER AWARDS Congratulations to Gabrielle Fa’amausili, whose latest gold has been won out of the pool, at Friday’s Don Oliver Awards evening. This is the second year Gabi has been presented with a Gold Award by the altruistic foundation which provides talented emerging young athletes with scholarships and other forms of support. Congratulations too to Avondale College swimmer Ikko Shibuya who was awarded an emerging swimmer’s training grant. DRAMA STUDENTS PERFORM ‘NIU SILA’ The Year 11 Drama class have been hard at work on their performance of ‘Niu Sila’ by Oscar Kightly and Dave Armstrong. The faced-paced and hilarious drama looks at how Palagi and Pasifika cultures interact, shown through the lens of two boys growing up in 1960’s New Zealand. Originally performed as a two-person piece, the Year 11s have taken on the challenge of turning it into a high-energy 25-person ensemble piece, reflecting the melting pot of different, wonderful peoples that is our New Zealand, our Niu Sila.

MAKE THAT TWELVE MEDALS! Last week we mentioned the superb performance of Lucy Makaea at the Surf Lifesaving NZ National Pool Champs in October. However, we got the number of medals wrong! Lucy didn’t win eleven, but twelve medals at the national meet! This success followed hot on the heels of her bronze medal for 100m fly in her age group at the NZ Short Course Swimming Champs a few days previously. Well done, Lucy!
STUDENT ALLOWANCE
Students planning to go to tertiary study after they leave school should apply for their Student Allowance or Loan by 16 December. StudyLink expects around 180,000 students to apply for their Student Allowance or Loan for the 2017 academic year. Applying by 16 December means StudyLink can get everything sorted so that the student receives their funding from the start of their course. Students don’t need to have their NCEA results or have locked down all their plans in order to apply. Their application can be updated as things are confirmed. It’s more important to allow enough time for all the steps in the application process to be completed. Students can find out more about applying for a student loan and allowance on the StudyLink website. Pop a reminder in your calendar, or even better - go straight to studylink.govt.nz to apply now.

SPORTS REPORT TERM 4 W1 Monday 10 October - Sunday 16 October The Junior Term 4 season began in Week 1 with boys’ volleyball being played at Kelston Boys High School and the girls’ teams at Avondale College. All boys cricket games were abandoned due to wet weather. We look forward to touch and softball starting next week and all teams are in full training now in preparation for their opening matches.

Auckland Rail network have contacted us saying a number of students are catching the trains without paying for their fare. Students are at risk of being trespassed from using the trains or being anywhere near all railway premises for two years. This could have a detrimental effect on getting to school which we don’t want to see happen. Auckland Rail network do have CCTV footage and can get pictures to identify the regular fare evaders. If you buy a HOP card it can stop your child keeping the cash for other things and the fares are almost half the price if you were paying by cash for a paper ticket. HOP card is the preferred method of payment on public transport.

TAUREWA CAMP 2016 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year TERM 4
