B IRIS WINS SMOKEFREE ROCKQUEST! Congratulations to our very own Iris Guevarra who won the solo-duo section at the national final of the Smokfree Rockquest competition on 24 September. Iris performed two of her original songs at the competition, with lyrics that were inspired by two of her closest friends. Leilani is about a girl of the same name. “I was very shy as a junior, she was the one who took me under her wing and I gained confidence through her friendship. “ If looks could kill is about a girl Iris had followed on Instagram and then met at a music event. “I became friends with her and discovered how amazing she is in real life.” “I think I connected to the audience well,” said Iris after her performance. “I don’t know how to describe my music and I don’t feel like I’m restricted by any type of sound. I’m really stoked with the win and the first thing I’m going to do is buy a new guitar.” Iris won $3000 in Rockshop vouchers, a NZ On Air recording, video and promo package, and promotion on The Edge TV.

Auckland Rail network have contacted us saying a number of students are catching the trains without paying for their fare. Students are at risk of being trespassed from using the trains or being anywhere near all railway premises for two years. This could have a detrimental effect on getting to school which we don’t want to see happen. Auckland Rail network do have CCTV footage and can get pictures to identify the regular fare evaders. If you buy a HOP card it can stop your child keeping the cash for other things and the fares are almost half the price if you were paying by cash for a paper ticket. HOP card is the preferred method of payment on public transport.

FUNDING TERTIARY STUDY Year 12 and 13 Students thinking about further study after they leave school have a lot of decisions to make. StudyLink’s website is a great place to visit to get you thinking about what it will cost to live and study. StudyLink can help you work out if study is right for you and how you’ll support yourself. How much money you may need to support yourself could surprise you. Once you’ve made the decision to study it’s a good idea to sign up to receive emails from StudyLink. This way you won’t miss out on important information, like when to apply and documents you need to send. We encourage students and parents to check out www.studylink.govt.nz.

PARKING SAFETY NOTICE The front gate of the school is a NO STOPPING zone. Please DO NOT drop your children off directly outside any gates or inside the school grounds. Drivers who stop in the wrong place to drop off passengers put the safety of the students, staff and school property at risk. Thank you.
