B CIE STUDY LEAVE Study leave begins this Friday 23 September for Year 12 and Year 13 students taking CIE. Year 11 students taking IGCSEs return to school next term and their final day will be Wednesday 19 October. During this time, additional study leave will be approved for some Year 11 students taking CIE exams before this date, as well as for some Year 10 students taking IGCSE Mathematics. Details of this study leave will be sent by letter to each student.

We wish all of our students the best of luck in their Cambridge exams.

HISTORY TRIP TO WAIKATO New Zealand’s history came alive for senior students this week as they visited some significant historical sites in support of their learning about the New Zealand Wars of the nineteenth century. The classes travelled south, seeing for themselves the bullet holes in the Pukekohe East Church (where the fighting closest to Auckland happened); the fortifications at Tuakau’s Alexandra Redoubt, the Whaingamarino Redoubt at Meremere and the extensive pa fortifications at Rangiriri. The students had a fantastic time and appreciated seeing for themselves where these significant battles actually happened.

Opportunity for students in Year 12 in 2017.

Avondale College is fortunate to be able to offer eight Year 12 students the opportunity to gain a free berth (due to grants received from The Trusts Community Foundation) on a 10 day youth development programme on board a voyage, on the Spirit of New Zealand for 2017.

The Spirit of Adventure Trust was formed by Lou Fisher in 1972 to provide the youth of New Zealand access to a 10 day character development programme through sail training. During the course of each voyage, the Trust aims to give young New Zealanders an equal opportunity to learn and develop from each other qualities of independence, understanding and community spirit through the medium of the sea.

The criteria for selection for this life changing opportunity is that the student will benefit from the experience as opposed to an award for academic or other achievements. Students have to be comfortable in deep water and also need to be medically fit.

All Year 11 students wishing to apply for a berth in 2017 should talk to their Homeroom teacher, Dean or see Mrs Johnson in the Careers Department to register their interest by the end of Term 3.

If students do not receive one of the free berths from Avondale College they can apply directly to The Spirit of Adventure Trust for one of the public berths.

The Spirit Trust can offer different levels of financial assistance for these voyages based on family circumstances.

NEW ZEALAND’S BIOLOGY OLYMPIAD TRAINEES ANNOUNCED Ten Avondale College students have qualified for the New Zealand International Biology Olympiad (IBO) tutorial programme, earning a Bronze Award. This is the largest group ever to qualify from Avondale College.

The students will now be working hard all summer in preparation for the National Selection and Training Camp qualifying examination at the start of 2017.

Avondale College has a solid competitive history in the IBO, with two students (Ethan Sorrell and Ery Zhu) both gaining medals at the international event in previous years.

The 2017 competition is to be held at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom next July. Four students from New Zealand will be selected to compete.

Congratulations (and best wishes) to our Avondale biologists: Anastasia Ivashkova, Dell Matravers Rock, Shereen Lee, Tye O’Sullivan, Zill Darji, Victoria Ivashkova, Jesslyn Chen, Leo Cekus, Bianca Craill and Jasica Chiu.

HAIRSPRAY: YOU CAN’T STOP THE BEAT! The final curtain fell on Hairspray the Musical on Saturday night, after a fantastic five night run in the Avondale College theatre.

Following the final bows, bronze, silver and gold service badges were awarded to students who had given three, four and even five years of service to musical theatre at Avondale College.

The College would once again like to thank all the students and staff who gave their time, enthusiasm and energy to producing such an entertaining and memorable show, in particular Director Miss Erica Newlands, Musical Director Mr Mathew Stenbo and Choreographer Miss Clare Jennings.

TAUREWA CAMP 2016 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year TERM 3
