AVONDALE OLD BOY FRASER SHARP COMPETING AT PARALYMPICS Avondale College is cheering on former student and para-cyclist Fraser Sharp who is competing this week at the Paralympic Games in Rio. The 38 year old considers sport as a lifeline and a therapy that keeps him positive. In 1993 when he was a student at Avondale College, he was involved in a very serious accident caused by a motorist which sent him into a month-long coma. Fraser’s speech and physical movement were majorly affected, however, by living with the motto of “everything is possible”, he keeps proving doubters wrong. Avondale College’s Senior Report Evening will be held on 20 September, in the College Atrium from 4.30pm to 7.00pm, giving parents the opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss the progress of their child. The online booking facility for this evening is now available on Family Connection until 18 September. Opportunity for students in Year 12 in 2017. Avondale College is fortunate to be able to offer eight Year 12 students the opportunity to gain a free berth (due to grants received from The Trusts Community Foundation) on a 10 day youth development programme on board a voyage, on the Spirit of New Zealand for 2017. The Spirit of Adventure Trust was formed by Lou Fisher in 1972 to provide the youth of New Zealand access to a 10 day character development programme through sail training. During the course of each voyage, the Trust aims to give young New Zealanders an equal opportunity to learn and develop from each other qualities of independence, understanding and community spirit through the medium of the sea. The criteria for selection for this life changing opportunity is that the student will benefit from the experience as opposed to an award for academic or other achievements. Students have to be comfortable in deep water and also need to be medically fit. All Year 11 students wishing to apply for a berth in 2017 should talk to their Homeroom teacher, Dean or see Mrs Johnson in the Careers Department to register their interest by the end of Term 3. If students do not receive one of the free berths from Avondale College they can apply directly to The Spirit of Adventure Trust for one of the public berths. The Spirit Trust can offer different levels of financial assistance for these voyages based on family circumstances.

GIRLS INSPIRED BY UNIVERSITY SCIENCE DAY The Science Department of Auckland University and L’Oreal hosted a ‘Girls in Science’ event on 9th September. Nine Year 11 and 12 female students had the privilege of listening to accomplished scientists in chemistry, marine science and geoscience. This was followed by a guided tour around the Chemistry and Mathematics faculties, the photon factory and the environmental labs. To cap it all off, a delicious lunch was provided along with a cherished goodie bag from L’Oreal! The girls gained so much from the experience and returned to school eager to pursue science as an option in the future.
NIU ON CAMPUS DAY Twelve Year 13 Pacific students who have been part of the 2016 University of Auckland NIU Mentoring Programme attended an ‘On Campus Experience Day’ on Tuesday last week. The day included a campus tour, sample lectures, question and answer sessions with former NIU students now studying at the University (including our own head Boy from last year, Junior Soqeta) as well as information sessions about all the support available to Pacific students on the Campus.

AVONDALE STUDENT DRAWS ON FAMILY FOR INSPIRATION Mackenzie Angus was featured in this week’s Western Leader with a garment she designed for New Zealand Fashion Week. “A fashion student has taken inspiration from her grandmother for the outfit she created for this year’s Walk the Line show at New Zealand Fashion Week. Mackenzie Angus, 15, from Avondale College created and modelled a maroon coloured dress after drawing inspiration from the skirt of the dress her grandmother made for her aunt’s wedding. “The dress came out at the bottom so that’s kind of where I got the idea to have mine come out and show the fullness of the skirt,” Angus says. TAUREWA CAMP 2016 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. The Bill Rodwell Rotary Award is to assist senior students to further their education at Avondale College. It is made to Year 11 or Year 12 students who have been fully involved in school activities, who have done well academically and intend to return to school for one or two years of further study. Family financial circumstances are taken into consideration. This year, three awards of $250 will be awarded.
