STUDENTS GAIN YET MORE I.C.T. CERTIFICATIONS
SCHOOL CLOSING EARLY
The CVs of one hundred and seventeen Avondale College students just got a whole lot more weighty yesterday, with the presentation of 299 certificates recognising achievement in four different ICT industry qualifications. These certifications included Microsoft Office Specialist, Microsoft Technical Associate, Adobe Certified Associate and Autodesk Certified Associate. These certifications are usually earned by adults at huge cost, but since 2014 Avondale College has presented 349 students with 848 industry qualifications. According to digital skills institute Xcerio, Avondale College is now New Zealand’s largest and most successful industry qualification provider. Avondale College’s Senior Report Evening will be held on 20 September, in the College Atrium from 4.30pm to 7.00pm, giving parents the opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss the progress of their child. SPIRIT OF NEW ZEALAND
Opportunity for students in Year 12 in 2017. Avondale College is fortunate to be able to offer eight Year 12 students the opportunity to gain a free berth (due to grants received from The Trusts Community Foundation) on a 10 day youth development programme on board a voyage, on the Spirit of New Zealand for 2017. The Spirit of Adventure Trust was formed by Lou Fisher in 1972 to provide the youth of New Zealand access to a 10 day character development programme through sail training. During the course of each voyage, the Trust aims to give young New Zealanders an equal opportunity to learn and develop from each other qualities of independence, understanding and community spirit through the medium of the sea. The criteria for selection for this life changing opportunity is that the student will benefit from the experience as opposed to an award for academic or other achievements. Students have to be comfortable in deep water and also need to be medically fit. All Year 11 students wishing to apply for a berth in 2017 should talk to their Homeroom teacher, Dean or see Mrs Johnson in the Careers Department to register their interest by the end of Term 3. If students do not receive one of the free berths from Avondale College they can apply directly to The Spirit of Adventure Trust for one of the public berths. The Spirit Trust can offer different levels of financial assistance for these voyages based on family circumstances.

GREAT RESULTS IN DANCE ACADEMY EXAMS Congratulations to our 17 Dance Academy students who achieved excellent results in their New Zealand Academy of Modern Dance examinations in Contemporary and Hip-Hop technique on Tuesday. Examiner Mrs Rhonda McGlinchy was flown up from Christchurch for the day and was thoroughly impressed by the passion for dance that our students demonstrated. Our results are outstanding. Deserving special mention are: - Bella Brough (Year 10) - awarded Distinction (95-100%) in Level 3 Contemporary. - Cate McIntosh (Year 10) - awarded High Honours (90-95%) in Level 3 Contemporary. - Sophie Francis (Year 9) - awarded High Honours (90-95%) in Level 2 Contemporary. - Louis Jiminez and Biell Marchingo-Miller (Year 9) - awarded “Outstanding” Hip-Hop Level 3 qualifications (95-100%).
SCI FI STORY WINS PLACE IN NATIONAL ANTHOLOGY Congratulations to Jacob Jones (Year 12) who has won third place in a national writing competition, and whose short story, The Earth We Knew, has been selected for publishing in the Write Off Line anthology for 2016. Now in its fifth year, ‘Write Off Line’ is a writing competition that attracts entries from secondary schools around New Zealand. The judges said they were impressed with the range and quality of the entries, which made judging a challenge. BRONZE FOR GABI AT JUNIOR PAN PACIFICS Our Year 12 swimmer has done it again, with a fantastic swim at the Junior Pan Pacifics Swimming Champs held in Hawaii last week. Gabrielle Fa’amausili took to the water in the very last race of the competition, to win a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle in a time of 25.36 - bringing home New Zealand’s only medal from the international competition. Nice one, Gabi!

The team won 5-1. • The semi-final was a close contest with a matches tied at 3-3; New Plymouth Girl’s High School winning two games more and taking the tie 8-6.

TAUREWA CAMP 2016 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.
