B STAND UP STAND OUT OUTSTANDING!
Friday’s Stand Up Stand Out grand final at the Vodafone Events Centre was a huge night, showcasing some of the very best musicians, singers and dance groups in Auckland. Avondale’s five acts represented themselves and the College superbly, with our Contemporary dance group standing out amongst the other Hip Hop groups, and instrumentalists Arjuna de Simas Oakes on piano, Emily Kamimura on violin and drummer Joshua Parker engaging the crowd with their individual solos. In the final act of the night Avondale’s Fusion 8 (Kirsten Paulse, James Poss, Arjuna de Simas Oakes, Natasha van Etten, Joshua Parker, Ben Goh, Cullen Erson and Shirley Chen) brought a high energy rendition of Gone Under, which was extremely well received. Particular congratulations to Joshua Parker and Fusion 8 who both received ‘Runners Up’ awards for their performances.

‘WALK THE LINE’ AT NZ FASHION WEEK
Eight Avondale designers took a step into the real world of fashion on Saturday, when their garments were modelled at the ‘Walk the Line’ Show during New Zealand Fashion Week. Organised by YMCA Auckland and Raise Up, the ‘Walk the Line’ event gives young designers aged between 13 and 18 the opportunity to display their creativity on a world stage platform. Fashion Technology teacher, Ms Shannon Freestone, says the event was a great opportunity for students to showcase designs they had been working on in their NCEA senior classes. “The show gave them real world experience - along with a concrete deadline to work towards,” she says. Also entering alongside Avondale’s seven senior students were two Year 9 students, designer Lucy Parkinson and model Emma Richards. Their garment was entered in the ‘recyclable’ category, meaning it had to be made from at least 80% recycled materials that are not used in everyday clothing. Lucy’s stunning design caught the eye of fashion photographer Luke Foley-Martin, with photographs of her outfit featuring on the NZ Fashion Week website. See: www. facebook.com/nzfashionweek/photos

SHARING THE SUCCESS: I.T. CERTIFICATIONS FOR WHANGAROA VISITORS Avondale College was delighted to welcome two minivans of students and staff from Whangaroa College to Avondale this weekend, in the first instalment of a special IT relationship being developed between the two schools. The group came to take part in an intensive Microsoft Office Specialist training course, facilitated by Avondale College’s Director of Innovation Programme Mr Paul McClean and digital certification providers Xcerio. The Northland visitors made the most of the technology and expertise on offer, and after an intense two days spent in A28 (and two nights in the College Whare), eight students and three staff – including Principal Jack Anderson - were presented with their industry certifications at the conclusion of the weekend. Principal Brent Lewis says he is delighted by the achievements of the visiting school. “It’s wonderful to be able to share our success and extend it to other schools.”

Avondale College’s Senior Report Evening will be held on 20 September, in the College Atrium from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, giving parents the opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss the progress of their child. The online booking facility for this evening will be available on Family Connection from Monday 5 September until 18 September. Once bookings close, appointments can only be made manually by students using the form posted out with the report.

The boys played very well together as a team, having scored four goals by half time; two by William Mongkhonwiratchai. In the second half of the game the rain made constructive play very difficult.
BADMINTON
The Girls Badminton team were placed 2nd in their division (weekly competition), having won 11 rounds and lost 1 round of matches and maintaining an unbeaten streak of 11 weeks. Dahlia Feng unfortunately could not be a part of the team this week due to a sprained ankle. The team won their last round 5-0 against St. Dominic’s College Team #3. In the singles matches Emilie Imai won 21-10, Julia Ling won 21-7 and Qi Ling Ng won 21-1. In the doubles encounters, Julia Ling and Emilie Imai won 21-7 and Jenny Ling and Qi Ling Ng won 21-2. A mix of endeavour and tenacity (two of the HEART values) is the distinguishing feature of this team, resulting in their being placed 2nd in their division as opposed to 8th place in 2015.

SPIRIT OF NEW ZEALAND Opportunity for students in Year 12 in 2017. Avondale College is fortunate to be able to offer eight Year 12 students the opportunity to gain a free berth (due to grants received from The Trusts Community Foundation) on a 10 day youth development programme on board a voyage, on the Spirit of New Zealand for 2017. The Spirit of Adventure Trust was formed by Lou Fisher in 1972 to provide the youth of New Zealand access to a 10 day character development programme through sail training. During the course of each voyage, the Trust aims to give young New Zealanders an equal opportunity to learn and develop from each other qualities of independence, understanding and community spirit through the medium of the sea. The criteria for selection for this life changing opportunity is that the student will benefit from the experience as opposed to an award for academic or other achievements. Students have to be comfortable in deep water and also need to be medically fit. All Year 11 students wishing to apply for a berth in 2017 should talk to their Homeroom teacher, Dean or see Mrs Johnson in the Careers Department to register their interest by the end of Term 3. If students do not receive one of the free berths from Avondale College they can apply directly to The Spirit of Adventure Trust for one of the public berths. The Spirit Trust can offer different levels of financial assistance for these voyages based on family circumstances.

TAUREWA CAMP 2016 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year TERM 3

The Bill Rodwell Rotary Award is to assist senior students to further their education at Avondale College. It is made to Year 11 or Year 12 students who have been fully involved in school activities, who have done well academically and intend to return to school for one or two years of further study. Family financial circumstances are taken into consideration. This year, three awards of $250 will be awarded. Application forms can be obtained from the main office or the Careers Department and should be handed in to Mr Goold when completed by Friday 23 September.

HOW TO TRACK YOUR STUDENT’S PROGRESS Tracking students’ current NCEA credits It is now possible for students, caregivers and staff to look at the current credit score board of a particular student. Using the family or student connection or spider, Click on
Enter the name of the student and click on student based reports
Click on ‘Download’ to display Students’ subject qualification tracking In the Report Launch screen, click on Download Report ( sometimes the ‘Report Launch’ screen is hidden behind other screens)
The downloaded report logo will appear at the bottom of the screen.
The graphs show that the student gained 4 credits with excellence in the internal and in the practice external achieved a standard and did not achieve the other one. An Internal Standard worth 5 credits has not yet been assessed. One practice external worth 6 credits has also not be assessed 8
