B A DOUBLE GOLD FOR AVONDALE MUSICIANS
Years of hard work is leading to the sweet sound of success for Avondale College musicians, whose String Ensemble and Big Band both won Gold awards at the prestigious Auckland-wide KBB Music festival. Avondale’s String Ensemble (tutored by David Snelling and led by Genevieve Tang) not only won a Gold award, but they were one of only four chamber orchestras invited to play at the exclusive Gala Concert at the conclusion of the KBB festival. “It’s the culmination of years of work,” says Director of Music Mr Mathew Stenbo. He notes the combination of students coming through the College’s Performing Arts Academy, the dedication of the tutors and the hard work of the students as key factors in their success. “To be standing alongside the best chamber orchestras from all the schools is wonderful recognition.” Avondale College’s Head of Jazz, Michael Robinson, also attributes his students’ success to their passion for music combined with hard work and commitment over many years. “The majority of our senior Big Band students have come through the College’s jazz programme or Performing Arts Academy and have taken part in numerous cocurricular opportunities,” he says. Next on the Music Department’s calendar is the final of the Stand Up Stand Out competition which takes place this Friday at the Vodafone Events Centre. (See page 2 for more details.)

A SILVER OLYMPIC MEDAL: CONGRATULATIONS, NIALL!
Avondale College is so proud of former student Niall Williams who won a silver Olympic medal with the New Zealand women’s Sevens team in Rio... The Sevens players will now share their Olympic experiences on a national tour to inspire young rugby players. The tour will see the Olympian Sevens players visiting schools, rugby clubs and girls’ rugby tournaments across seven New Zealand towns and cities. Of the 112 different high schools that played a role in educating New Zealand’s 202 Olympic athletes, Avondale College comes high on the list... The story came through stuff.co.nz this week, with Avondale sitting third in a table of the schools with the most Olympic Athletes. Avondale College is very proud of our five: silver medalist Niall Williams; and footballers Jasmine Pereira, Kirsty Yallop, Betsy Hassett and Amber Hearn. OUR CHAMPION SPELLER TAKES ON NEW ZEALAND
Vishva Dave can spell words in three languages – but on Thursday and Friday this week it is his English ability that will be put to the test as he steps onto the stage of the New Zealand Spelling Bee national final. The Year 9 student flew through classroom and regional heats to become one of only 36 finalists at the nationwide competition which tests the best Year 9 and 10 spellers in New Zealand. In the heats, words like ‘epoch’ and ‘reggae’ posed no problem for Vishva, who is now revising a list of 200 words in preparation for the national competition. The list is a challenging one, featuring words like ‘chignon’ and ‘archipelago’. “They will choose about half from the list, and half will be random words,” he says. Finalists must spell their word on stage without making a mistake, but they can ask for alternative pronunciation, origins, definition and type of word. Vishva, who speaks Gujarati at home and who also knows some Hindi, attributes his spelling ability to his love of reading. “I pick up words from books and they stick in my head,” he says. His best tip for improving spelling? “Read a lot. When you read, you have fun while learning at the same time.” 3
FOOTBALL ACADEMY STUDENTS REFEREE LOCAL TOURNAMENT The Year 9 Football Academy were once again out in the local community as they officiated at the Sport Waitakere Primary School Football Tournament. The students, who have recently completed their club-based referring qualification, were integral to the success of the day. It was a great opportunity for them to demonstrate our HEART values to the younger students and their parents. This is the third time that these students have helped out in similiar activities this year.

MOUNTAIN BIKING SUCCESS FOR PAIGE WEIR Both the sun and good fortune were shining on mountain biker Paige Weir last week as she took out the racing title for Junior Girls at the competition in Hunua Regional Park. Congratulations, Paige, a fantastic result!

A solid start saw us gain ascendancy and this hardly changed throughout the game. Good defensive group work saw us continually stealing what possession the opposition had but lethargic execution in the attacking half saw us just one goal clear at half time. Fortunately, a more purposeful effort in the second half saw the goals emerge with a fine long range goal from Iyaad Ali, the pick of the four. A convincing win as the team look to finish what has been a more productive second half of the season.

Avcol 2nd XV played a virtual final for the 2B Plate competition on Saturday against Onehunga High School. The Avondale boys were very excited and a little nervous as Onehunga had given us a thirty point thrashing earlier in the season. The game began with Onehunga dominating field position and possession. Avondale countered with powerful tackling and impressive line speed in defence. After a stunning breakout by Zak Mauga, Avcol scored the game’s first try. The rest of the half was a see-saw battle. Christian Asovale finished off a brilliant team try which meant Avcol went in to the break ahead by 12 points to 10. Onehunga came out with renewed vigour in the second half and, cheered on by a large home crowd, they dominated most of the second half. With the advantage of numbers Onehunga managed to out flank us to score a couple of late tries to seal the victory. The game was played in good spirits by both teams. The Avcol 2nd XV players can be proud of the huge improvements they have made throughout the season.

Senior Social 1 won 29-20 against Avcol Senior Social 2. Our Senior Social 2 team, through the rain, hail and winter winds, managed to win their final 29-20 against Senior Social 2. The team has had a great season, seeing all players develop their netball skills, game after game. The team started from the bottom and now are winners of their grade. BADMINTON
The Girls Badminton team are now unbeaten in their weekly competition for the 10th week in a row. In their penultimate game this week they won 5-0 against Liston College Team #2. In the singles matches, Julia Ling won 21-11, Qi Ling Ng won 21-4 and Jenny Ling won 21-19. In the doubles encounters, Julia Ling and Emilie Imai won 21-17, and Jenny Ling and Qi Ling Ng won 21-7. In the warm-ups before the matches Dahlia Feng sprained her ankle, so was unable to play this week. Badminton Auckland Secondary School Championships The following students represented Avondale College at the Auckland Secondary School Championships on the 16th of August 2016 held at Gillies Avenue, Newmarket, Auckland: DacMen Vong (12ALD) Qi Ling Ng (10GDR) Jenny Ling (12DTN) Emilie Imai (10DNL) Julia Ling (11SLA) The highlights of the success were: • Emilie and Qi Ling won the Junior Girls Doubles by defeating Westlake Girls (14-21, 21-19 & 21-19) in the finals. • DacMen Vong was the runner-up in the Senior Boys Singles losing 11-21 & 11-21 in the finals to Oscar Guo (Westlake High). • Qi Ling Ng was placed 4th in the Junior Girls Singles losing 19-31 in the semi-finals to Alicia Fong (Mt. Albert Grammar).

Auckland Secondary Schools Championship Our Premier Girls Lacrosse team played at the Auckland Secondary Schools Championship on Thursday 18th August at College Rifles in Remuera. The team had a great day with good preparation for their Nationals. The team placed 4th at this tournament; they won their first two games and then came up against Epsom and Mt Albert who were the two top teams in the season competition. The Girls fought hard and had great defence but lost both games, which put us in the play offs for 3rd/4th against Mt Roskill which we lost 7-5.

TAUREWA CAMP 2016 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. BILL RODWELL ROTARY AWARD 2017 The Bill Rodwell Rotary Award is to assist senior students to further their education at Avondale College. It is made to Year 11 or Year 12 students who have been fully involved in school activities, who have done well academically and intend to return to school for one or two years of further study. Family financial circumstances are taken into consideration. This year, three awards of $250 will be awarded. Application forms can be obtained from the main office or the Careers Department and should be handed in to Mr Goold when completed by Friday 23 September.
