It is my real pleasure to celebrate the high levels of personal excellence achieved by so many of our students in so many different aspects of school life in 2017. It has been a special year for Avondale College students as they have continued to gain numerous formal qualifications as rock-solid proof of their talent and potential. In addition to the achievements gained in NCEA and Cambridge this year, more than 2200 globally recognised industry digital certifications have now been achieved in the last ten months alone, in such programmes such as Microsoft, Adobe and Autodesk. Avondale College is the largest and most successful IT industry certification provider in the country (including any other school, university or specialist training institution), and it’s not just the students who are benefiting. Our staff are now the most digitally qualified in New Zealand, with nearly 400 professional qualifications being gained by them over the last 12 months. Avondale College’s emergence as a performance leader has generated a great deal of interest amongst ICT industry corporations, and we have been invited to share our approach at international conferences in the USA and in Singapore this year. New Zealand’s Ministry of Education has also invited us to lead national trials in digital education, and discussions with the Ministry around ICT education are ongoing.
H IG HLIG HTS
At our weekly school assemblies we take great pride in sharing and celebrating the successes of our current and former students. Just a few highlights mentioned this year have included our extraordinary student alumni - current cricket Blackcaps, Netball Ferns, women’s sevens players, Football Ferns, athletes, and, of course, our many current students – 19 of whom were international sporting representatives themselves in 2017. We are especially delighted that Year 13 student Gabrielle Fa’amausili (who won New Zealand’s Halberg Emerging Talent award while in Year 10) has continued to excel and has just been awarded a fully funded scholarship to the University of Georgia. In the arts too, our students continue to shine, with our music and dance students gaining numerous awards this year at events such as the Tauranga Jazz festival, the Aspire International Music Festival in Brisbane, the KBB Music Festival here in Auckland, and the Stand Up Stand Out competition. Our talented students also shone on stage in our school show, Rock of Ages, at numerous performance events both in and out of school, and at the spectacular end-of-year dance showcase.

Our results and progress on so many fronts is a direct result of the highly qualified, skilled and energetic staff team who are continually driving the school forward in the interests of our students. They are a very dedicated and professional group. Many have been involved in writing national curricula this year, as well as setting and marking national and international examinations. Others, meantime, are also leading professional curriculum organisations, professional development, and organising national conferences.

AT MICROSOFT WORLD CHAMPS “The Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship is inspiring – not only because these students won an impressive award, but because they have gained valuable workforce skills that will benefit them throughout their academic and career pursuits,” said Aaron Osmond, General Manager of certification provider and competition organiser, Certiport.
Four of New Zealand’s Avondale College team placed in the top ten of their categories at the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championships held in the USA at the start of August, with Innovation Programme intern Jayden Cooke bringing home a bronze medal! This is another extraordinary result for Avondale College. The world’s largest global ICT competition is open to secondary and tertiary students aged from 13 to 22 and this year grew to attract 1.1 million entries from 670,000 individuals in 122 countries.

Avondale College fielded the entire Australasian team at the international final, joining 200 finalists from 50 countries. Competition was fierce as contestants raced against the clock to create unique project-based assignments in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Jayden, an Avondale College graduate and current Innovation Programme intern won third place in the world – and a prize of USD$1,500 for his efforts in the Excel (2016) category. This makes it the second bronze medal he has won at international level, following his previous success in MS Word (2010) in 2014. Three of Jayden’s teammates also achieved top-ten in the world results: Shrey Tailor (Year 12) came fifth in Microsoft Excel 2013, Sebastian Thomas (Year 11) came eighth in Microsoft PowerPoint 2013, and Ed Allison (Year 10) won eighth place in Microsoft PowerPoint 2016. It’s an extraordinary tally for Avondale College, with this year’s success making it twelve world top-ten results, including three medals, since our students began taking part four years ago.
Special Farewell His contributions as a mathematics teacher, Dean, and in more recent years, Deputy Principal have been enormous. He has been a tireless supporter of all school activities and was often to be found on the sides of sports fields on the coldest of days. He has also made a significant contribution to the smooth running of the college’s digital network. More visibly to the students, he and his team of deans have been responsible for this year’s cohort of Year 13 students, who will also be leaving at the end of the year. It speaks volumes about the character of the man that he wanted to take his Year 9 group from five years ago right through to their safe and successful departure from the school before bidding his own final farewell this year. Mr Goold, Avondale College will miss you - and we extend the warmest of thanks and the very best wishes for a long and happy retirement.
AVCOL FAREWELLS MR GOOLD Deputy Principal John Goold is retiring at the end of this school year after 19 years’ service at Avondale College. A quiet, hardworking, generous and self-effacing man with the highest levels of personal integrity, John carefully avoids the limelight yet fully deserves to be a centre of attention.
WELCOME TO MR BENNETT Avondale College is delighted to welcome Mr Matt Bennett to the position of Deputy Principal. Originally from England, Mr Bennett has most recently been at Auckland Grammar School, where he was Head of the Arts and Technology Faculty and the Principal's Nominee.
Although he is the elder member of the executive team he is also the fittest, and regularly runs marathons both here and abroad - very notably missing the bombing in the Boston marathon by just a hundred metres or so.

Rocking back to a time of big egos, big guitar solos, and even bigger hair, a massive cast of nearly 90 students took to the stage to perform in Avondale College's five night run of Rock of Ages, (High School Edition) in September.
"The Final Countdown," and other rock favourites. Set during the tail end of the big, bad 1980s, Rock of Ages follows the story of aspiring rock star Drew (Joshua Parker) and small-town girl Sherri (Kiara Fernandes) as they fight to save Hollywood's Sunset Strip.
The show featured classic 80s hits from legendary artists Bon Jovi, Journey, Styx, Pat Benatar, Poison, REO Speedwagon and more. Audiences had "Nothin' but a Good Time" as they jammed out to reimagined renditions and mash-ups of "Don't Stop Believin,'" "Here I Go Again," "Hit Me With Your Best Shot,"
Congratulations to all the students involved, and to the staff who worked so hard behind the scenes to bring the show to life, particularly Director Miss Erica Newlands, Musical Director Mr Mathew Stenbo and Choreographer Ms Clare Jennings.
Stand Up Stand Out
Avondale College once again made a big impact on the Aucklandwide Stand Up Stand Out music and dance competition, with our trio of singers winning the Group Vocalist award at the grand final! The competition heats took place over a number of weeks, and our students shone in the competition categories of solo vocal, group vocal, solo instrumental, bands and dance. Following a selection process of judging by a panel of industry professionals, four Avondale College acts made it through to the grand finals which were held at the Vodafone Events Centre on Saturday 2 September. They were: solo instrumentalist Joshua Parker on drums; group vocalists Tinei Tagaloa, Olivia Masoe and Antonia Vavao, (accompanied by Harold Taotafa); Avondale’s Senior Contemporary Dance Group; and solo vocalist Tinei Tagaloa. A trio of Year 10 vocal students, (Angel Maene, Steven Tuitama and Ephraim Matafai) were also selected as finalists in the People’s Choice Awards. All our students did extremely well at the event, and we were delighted when Tinei, Olivia and Antonia won the group vocalist category!

PASIFIKA COMMUNITY
Leaders’ Dinner
Avondale College was once again delighted to host a special dinner for our Pasifika community leaders in September to celebrate and discuss further ways of supporting the success of our Pasifika students. After sharing a meal together, Deputy Principal Lyndy Watkinson presented the achievement data of our Pasifika students, which continues to track well above national averages for all New Zealand students. Guests then heard from four senior students who shared their powerful stories of challenge and triumph as students at Avondale College. The discussion that followed endorsed the work that our teachers do to promote Pasifika success, and it also provided valuable food for thought for our next steps. We look forward to continuing to work alongside our church leaders, community leaders and families, to support the further success of our Pasifika students.
Nadia launches book at Avcol Avondale College’s atrium was the perfect space for welcoming home former student Nadia Lim for the launch of her new book, Let’s Eat. Students from our Hospitality classes had been hard at work during the day preparing a selection of delicious treats from the new book for guests to sample – including her ‘Chorizo, Tomato, Courgette and Haloumi Skewers’, bite-sized ‘Pizza Supreme’ and ‘Real Malaysian Satay’ skewers, followed by ‘Wicked Coffee, Toffee and Walnut Slice’ and ‘Luscious Lemon Cheesecakes’. The showcase of superb Avondale talent continued with live music from two of our jazz combos, which added real atmosphere to the event. Organised in conjunction with Paper Plus, the sold-out crowd enjoyed listening to Nadia chat about her life and journey – from her Avondale College days through to her latest adventures in publishing, business and food. The evening was an inspiring and entertaining one – and we look forward to continuing to celebrate the success of this inspirational former student.

CLUBS Amnesty Amnesty’s Freedom Challenge Week took place once again at Avondale College in September. This year the team were raising funds to support Amnesty International in their fight against the unethical production of palm oil, which has a devastating effect on both the people forced to work on plantations and the environment. The group organised a number of activities throughout the week, aimed at giving students the opportunity to learn about what really goes into our food and cleaning products, where these ingredients come from and how they are made.
Niuean LANGUAGE WEEK
The Amnesty team would like to thank all who supported Amnesty’s fundraising efforts through the mufti day and bake sale.
KO E VAGAHAU NIUE KO E ATEFUA HE TAGATA NIUE – The Niue language is the heart of Niue people! The language and culture of Niue was celebrated school-wide during Niuean Language Week on 15-21 October. Our Niuean students introduced the week at Monday’s assemblies by running a very entertaining kalaga (call) competition. They then held a Niuean Market Day on Thursday lunchtime, selling chop suey and rice, takihi, coconut bread and raw fish. This was a great success, thanks to many parents helping to make food for this special occasion. Well done to our students for their planning and enthusiasm in promoting their beautiful Niuean culture to students and staff at Avondale College!
Safe School Leaders A core group of Safe School Leaders have been involved in collecting canned food from the students and staff of Avondale College to donate to the Auckland City Mission. In all, 22 boxes of food were collected, delivered and donated to the Mission to contribute to the 13,000 food parcels they give out to struggling Auckland families each year.

Travelwise
This project was a Safe School Leader driven student initiative to give service to the greater Auckland community. Safe School Leaders were amazed at the scope of work that the Mission does to help Auckland families and the homeless, which includes feeding 120 homeless people twice a day, providing food, clothing, furniture and Christmas presents for families in financial hardship, a medical centre, pharmacy and legal services. As part of the initiative, a pizza lunch was provided in Term 4 to the class that donated the most food, and this year's winners were 9SIL. Well done and thank you! The key students involved in organising and running the collection with the School Counsellors were: Jasmine Wight, Christyanna Saufoi, Julie Toimoana, Jaria Manase, Jecheala Manase, Saisha Shahi, Ashellyn Xavier, Alana Rae, Cate McIntosh, Israel Levi, Geniqua Samupo and Perosi Roma.
The small but dedicated Travelwise group hosted a Road Safety Expo in conjunction with Auckland Transport on Tuesday 26 September. The focus for the Expo this year was learner driver safety and hazard identification. The group manned stalls to educate students about road safety which included quizzes, a giant game of snakes and ladders, and the responsible hosting table was especially popular with students sampling mocktails and taking recipes home. The Police were also in attendance with the Booze Bus available for students to look through and the speed camera technology was put to excellent use measuring running speed – one student got up to 27km/h.

Dance TEMPO DANCE FESTIVAL On Sunday 15 October the Avondale College Senior Contemporary Group spent the day in Queen Street's Q theatre preparing for their performance in Ignite! 2017. The show was run by the Tempo Dance Festival and gave our students the opportunity to represent the College in a professional performance. The dancers enjoyed working with industry professionals and students from other schools and dance companies. The dancers were: Lauren Catley, Danielle Twentyman, Cate McIntosh, Claudia O'Neill, Akiho Kawamura, Bella Brough, Helena May, Sasha Matsumoto, Coretti Tuffs, and M'Ryah Atama.
English NZ SPELLING BEE
DANCE SCHOLARSHIP: FILMING DAY
"Histrionic." "Claustrophobic." "Buoyant." These were not just the emotions felt by the Auckland semi-finalists of the NZ Spelling Bee - but some of the words they had to spell aloud in front of an audience and panel of judges on Saturday 12 August !
On Thursday 28 September the Dance Scholarship students spent the day in the school theatre working with a group of 35 dancers and a team of technicians to produce dance works on the stage. The students created conceptual pieces at the highest level, that incorporated full lighting and costume design and production. Each Scholarship student was supported by groups of dancers from Years 9 - 13. These pieces were then featured in the following week’s Dance Showcase.
Superb results in the classroom testing round of the NZ Spelling Bee meant that 25 Avondale College students made it through to New Zealand's top 200 of the national competition! Twenty three of these joined a total of 86 students at the Auckland semifinal at Auckland Grammar School. After a challenging written round of twenty words, half taken from the 100 word official list and the other half made up of previously unseen words, six of our students progressed to the stage for the sudden-death oral round.
DANCE SHOWCASE: ORBIT The 2017 Dance Showcase: Orbit was a spectacular evening of performance, incorporating contemporary dance, hip-hop, jazz, ballet, and cultural forms of dance (including K-Pop, Pasifika styles, and Bollywood!). Congratulations to all who took to the stage - this was an outstanding event!
This was nerve-wracking for students and audience alike as each competitor stepped up to the microphone to spell aloud their words - one mistake meant they were out. After a number of rounds, our final Avondale representative, standing, Grace Elijas, made it through to the final ten before going out. Congratulations to all our top spellers, and particularly to the six who made it into the oral rounds!

Music AUCKLAND SCHOOLS JAZZ BAND COMPETITION This year Avondale College had its largest representation at the ASJBC with three combos entering into the competition. ASJBC has become the largest secondary school jazz combo competition in New Zealand and our students were very happy to come away with three silver awards. Each combo performed a 30 minute set covering a wide variety of styles including swing, funk, blues and Latin.
JAZZ AND SOUL NIGHT This year’s Jazz and Soul Night featured a wide variety of performance, including our upcoming Jazz Academy students, our three award winning jazz combos and Big Band, 13MUS, Soul Band and the two student led vocal groups, Avondale Vox and The Uzos. The inspiring performances showcased the students’ dedication to their music and the joy of performing together.
KBB MUSIC FESTIVAL In 2017 Avondale College was represented by a record number of students at the KBB Music Festival, with 46 students in the Symphony Orchestra, 19 students in the Big Band, 22 students in the String Ensemble and 30 students in our Taikaka Orchestra. The Taikaka Orchestra made their debut at the festival this year, performing in the non-competitive fringe-festival section. Our Symphony Orchestra gained a bronze award and our Big Band and String Ensemble both gained silver awards. The String Ensemble also won the Chairman’s Command Performance Trophy along with the opportunity to perform at the Gala Concert and also the award for the Best Performance of a Work in Category: Other, for their rousing performance of Kurt Moser’s Red Rhythmico.
began in March 2016 and involved lots of fundraising as well as musical preparation. First we flew to Brisbane to take part in the Aspire Festival held at the Queensland Conservatory. The festival included competition performances, workshops, masterclasses and public performances in the Conservatory, Queen Street Mall and Old Government House. Adjudicators and audiences were very taken with our students’ passion and spirit. The String Ensemble accepted a Highly Commended award, The Big Band came second in their category and our Symphony Orchestra was awarded first place in their category as well as being given the opportunity to perform at the gala concert. We chose to showcase some of the extraordinary talent of Avondale College students by playing the 3rd movement of Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto in G Minor, featuring Jeffery Guo on piano. Following the festival, we attended an Aboriginal cultural experience which included traditional dance and boomerang throwing as well as learning about the importance of music in Aboriginal culture. Then it was off to the Gold Coast and an afternoon at Surfer’s Paradise followed by swimming in the hotel pool and spa. We spent the next day at Movieworld experiencing thrilling rides and themed activities. The last day was back to Brisbane for an afternoon of shopping before heading to the airport and home to Auckland. The trip was a great experience for students and staff, lifting engagement and quality of all our music groups.
ASPIRE INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL In July 2017 we were lucky to be able to take 45 students and six staff to a new festival in Brisbane. We teamed up with tour company Student Horizons to offer our Symphony Orchestra, String Ensemble and Big Band a seven-day trip including a variety of Festival and recreational activities. The planning
International For three weeks in November our International students were involved in an action packed activity programme which included a range of school based activities including Tai Chi, Outdoor Education, Samoan cooking, making Christmas crafts, learning Maori and Samoan culture, dancing, karaoke and drama to name just a few. The students really enjoyed the range of activities that they wouldn’t normally take part in back in their home countries. The students were also offered some fantastic opportunities to go on many field trips and experience the beautiful outdoors by taking part in sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, rock climbing, visiting Waiheke Island and a day trip to Coromandel. A huge thank you to the International staff and teachers for organising such fun filled last few weeks for our International students, many of whom will be travelling back home to join their families in their own countries very soon. This has been a great way to finish their New Zealand experience. We wish all our International students a safe journey home and hope they have had a wonderful time with us here at Avondale College.

Performing Arts ACADEMY
Our Performing Arts Academy students put on a wonderful performance at the Where's Wally? evening on Thursday 16 November. Students from the Dance, Drama, Classical and Jazz strands showcased their year's learning in the performing arts, taking the audience on a journey around the world as they referenced the adventures of the elusive traveller, Wally. Congratulations to all students and teaching staff who have worked so hard during the early morning Academy sessions throughout the year on produc such an enjoyable evening.
Mathematics DESIGN AWARD FOR BRIDGE BUILDERS Avondale's bridge building team of Tommy Ong, Arc Porcioncula and Rohan Sharma, won the prize for the best digital design of all the 32 teams who entered the Auckland-wide Aurecon Bridge Building Competition! Avondale entered two teams in the competition, with our team of Christopher Tang, Roshni Oberoi and Xin Yan Liu doing well in the 'strength' category. Tested to breaking point, their bridge held a weight of over 20kg and placed 14th overall. The strongest bridge on the day managed 80kg, so there is incentive for our budding mathematicians to continue planning their challenge for next year!
Physical EDUCATION SPORTS DAY A HIT WITH PRIMARY KIDS Students from 12PES led a fun, farming-themed sports day at Rosebank Primary in the last week of Term 3. This was as part of their Year 12 course, towards their Achievement Standard: Examine the implementation and outcome(s) of a physical activity event or opportunity. Our students did a fantastic job, working tirelessly to ensure each group had a great time. In total our students interacted with the entire primary school - 18 classes and almost 500 kids!
Science FORWARD-THINKING SCIENCE PROJECT MAY HOLD KEY TO TREATMENT OF CANCER An innovative science fair project has not only won Shahd AlIsawi (Year 13) a fistful of awards and a $1000 dollar scholarship to study Science at Auckland University, but may hold a key for the treatment of both cancer and diabetes in the future! The 'Black Healer' project was a culmination of two years of work for Shahd and her science partner, Nour Abughazala, from Epsom Girls Grammar School. Supported by a team of specialised individuals who supervised them through the experiments, the girls were able to refine an extract from Nigella Satvia seeds and conduct many experiments via cell culture at the University of Auckland. The girls identified at which concentration and at which temperature the extract from the ‘black seeds’ increased insulin secretion in beta cells and decreased cell viability in melanoma cancer. The results obtained were remarkable and pose a possibility for a new treatment for cancer and diabetes in the future! Shahd says that she felt very proud to represent Avondale College at the NIWA Science and Technology Fair, and she would encourage others to take part in the future. "I believe it will encourage students to find a passion for science the way I have," she says, "as well as enabling the students to develop skills that will benefit them in later life and in tertiary education."

RECORD NUMBER OF CERTIFICATIONS FOR ICT STUDENTS
A number of our Food Technology and Hospitality students were lucky enough to have a very special visitor to their classes on 31st October.
Students involved in our Innovation Programme and ICT classes this year have continued to make the most of the professional qualifications opportunities available to them, with more than 2,200 industry-level certifications having been gained in 2017!
Former student Nadia Lim spent time chatting with students and demonstrating some of her recipes, all the while communicating her passion for healthy, good food. With the combined junior classes, Nadia showed how to make the little lemon cupcakes featured in her new book, Let's Eat! Senior students were fascinated to watch Nadia whip up an amazing eggless meringue - using her secret ingredient of the liquid from a tin of chickpeas! She also showed how to make a sugarless jam using raspberries and chia seeds, all while chatting about her journeys in food, publishing and presenting - as well as sharing some of her memories of Avondale College. The students were fully engaged in both sessions - with all who asked questions going in the draw to win a cookbook at the end of the lesson! Students left feeling enthused and inspired - and we look forward to seeing more foodie entrepreneurs emerging from our food tech classrooms in the future!
Students aren’t the only ones gaining qualifications – staff too have been earning multiple certification qualifications, making ours the most digitally qualified staff in New Zealand! This means that nearly 3500 professional qualifications (in Microsoft, Adobe, Autodesk and more) have been gained since our Pearson Vue/Certiport industry certification testing centre opened in 2014. According to XCERIO (Pearson’s local partner), the Innovation Programme remains “New Zealand’s largest and most successful industry certification provider” – which is an expression of our students’ amazing accomplishments in four years.

Overview OF SPORT Kia ora koutou katoa A summative review of the year in sport at Avondale College is a monumental task given the range and scope of the sporting activity that has taken place throughout the year! Sport encompasses the jubilation of winning through to the heartache of a tough loss. It includes the social aspect of being able to play alongside your friends for fun and enjoyment. There are also those day to day tasks which keep sport going, where students turn up to training sessions prepared and determined to strive for maximum effort, where staff pass on their knowledge and experience to their students, where the school, families and the local community assist and support our strategies, with the college helping to fund and enable our sport to function from year to year.
Sports Awards
Here at Avondale College we continue to provide a sporting programme which maximises a participant's potential and involvement in sport, helping them to achieve their sporting dreams and at the same time enabling them to compete at school, club, regional and potentially national levels in their chosen sport. The social and competitive aspects of sport are underpinned by our school HEART values of honesty, endeavour, atawhai, respect and tenacity.
THE TRUSTS SPORT WAITAKERE EXCELLENCE AWARDS This year two Avondale College athletes were recognised at The Trusts Sport Waitakere Excellence Awards which celebrate the success and achievement of West Auckland in the sporting arena across all roles in sport
This year we fielded a total of 91 teams across the summer and winter codes - 36 junior teams and 55 senior teams. Nine of these teams won either their Zone or Auckland Championship competitions and two teams were the champions of their winter tournament week competitions. As these results show, we have some incredibly high performing students who deservedly gain plaudits for their efforts. They know exactly what it means to make every effort to win, and do so consistently. This is what defines their success. We currently have 19 New Zealand representatives amongst many codes who have excelled in their chosen sport, gaining outstanding results for themselves, our school and the families involved.
Year 13 swimmer Gabrielle Fa’amausili received the Secondary School Sportsperson of the Year Award, and Year 12 weightlifter Kanah Andrews-Nahu, the Junior Sportswoman of the Year as well as the Maori Achievement Award.  Also recognised was cricketer (and former Avondale College student) Jeet Ravel, who won the Sportsman of the Year Award.

The 27th annual awards evening was held on Thursday 23 November at Eden Park, where Gabrielle received the top award in her category for her achievements in swimming this year, which included representing New Zealand at the FINA World Champs in Budapest.

Winter Tournament Week September saw secondary school teams from all over New Zealand gather to compete in the annual Winter Tournament Week tournaments, with Avondale College’s premier teams travelling as far north as Whangarei and as far south as Otago to compete.
Mahurangi College 1-0 in the quarter final. Day 4 saw us take on Mt Albert Grammar whom we had played twice during our weekly season, winning one game a piece. With injuries and sickness kicking in we were rolling subs every few minutes to get fresh legs on the field, and despite a huge effort, we came out second best in the end with a 2-1 loss. The final match of the tournament came in the 7th vs 8th place final against Sir John Paul College. The girls were amped for the match despite having already played out five difficult games. In the end a 4-1 win saw the girls finish in 7th place out of 20 teams. It was a great week rounded off with a wonderful result.
FOOTBALL BOYS 1ST XI NZSS LOTTO TOURNAMENT, NAPIER
The very first game of the tournament saw us go down 3-1 to Hamilton Boys where we learned that the level of football here was a step-up from what we have faced this year! The second game of the tournament against Scots College of Wellington saw a much better performance despite a tight 2-1 loss. Up against Macleans from the Auckland premier division the next day, the boys came flying out of the blocks and scored two early goals through Joao Abreu and Ben McGregor. Our boys went on to win 3-1.
BADMINTON BOYS NZSS CHAMPIONSHIPS, NAPIER
The boys tried extremely hard but were beaten 5-0 against Hamilton Boys' College in their opening game of the tournament. This was followed by another 5-0 defeat at the hands of Auckland Grammar 1. Dacmen Vong managed to win both his single games.
Our afternoon match against Waimea went as expected with the boys grinding out a 4-1 win. The next day saw a 2-0 lost against against St Peters Cambridge who are coached by former All Whites coach, Ricki Herbert. A hard won fight against a spirited Francis Douglas College team set up a 21 vs 22 place match against Mt Albert Grammar, which we won 3-2.
The boys then played Westlake Boys High 1, losing 1-5, with Dacmen winning his single game. The boys finished in 8th place. Our New Zealand rep, Dacmen Vong, had enough points by himself to bring the team into Division 1, having won all of his singles games.
The 1st XI boys placed 21st out of 32 teams and with a little more luck along the way could and should have been higher. Nonetheless, a 4 wins/3 loss return from the tournament is fantastic!
BADMINTON GIRLS NZSS CHAMPIONSHIPS, NAPIER
Our girls had a fantastic week in Napier, winning the gold medals and qualifying for Division 1! In a great start to the competion the girls managed to secure two wins in their opening games: 6-0 against Napier Girls' College and St John Paul College. They then went on to win all their games (6-0) against Waikato Diocesan in very close matches and with good rallies. The afternoon match against St Oran's College was a thriller, with the girls edging through 4-2 winners. The girls were through to the final of the tournament against New Plymouth and it was a classic: 3-3 draw on games and 7-7 in matches, the final came down to points and our girls secured gold by a 3 point margin 246-243. Showing great HEART values all week, the girls also qualified for the 1st Division.
FOOTBALL GIRLS 1ST XI NZSS KATHY SEAWARD TOURNAMENT, WHANGAREI
The Girls 1st XI Football team had a victorious week in Whangarei, winning their tournament without conceding a single goal in any of their games! The girls won their games against Aquinas School, Kings College, Birkenhead College and Pompellier before drawing with Glendowie 0-0. The wins continued against Lynfield College and, in the final, against Bethlehem College. It was a fantastic effort from all 16 girls and a great send off for the Year 13 girls in their last game, especially for Molly Flynn after her five years in the 1st XI and the last two years as Captain.

The boys got off to a great start against Kristin School, showing great HEART to gain a 66-51 win.
The 1st XI Hockey boys headed to Otago to play in the Johnson Cup, where a solid week of competition saw them place 4th out of the 13 teams. They won against James Hargest College and Buller High, and drew against Cashmere High before winning 3-0 against Pakuranga College in the quarter final. A 1-2 loss in the semis against Southland Boys saw them playing for 3rd/4th place (and in the Plate Final) against Cashmere High. Unfortunately it was not to be our day, and we went down 1-2 again, just as in the semis, to place 4th out of 13 teams. The boys represented Avondale outstandingly on and off the field and can be proud of their tournament result!
Next up were their biggest rivals of the season, St Peter's College. Over the season the boys had played them three times, winning one and losing two, including the final. The boys were determined to get a win over them but a bad first quarter put the boys 15 points down. They fought back to be within three points with three minutes to go but it wasn’t quite enough, the boys going down 92-86. The second day saw Avondale face national champions, Rangitoto College. The boys played a brilliant game throughout, having the lead half way through the second quarter. However, their experience and New Zealand rep players meant that Rangitoto pulled away to a 120- 51 win. The boys then played Birkenhead and had a comfortable 85-72 win. This secured third place in the group and a playoff match against Manurewa High School. A loss to Manurewa saw the boys finish in 13th place out of 23 teams.
HOCKEY GIRLS 1ST XI CHICA GILMER TROPHY, WHANGAREI
The girls had a great week, winning four out of six games to end up 7th overall. They began the tournament with a comprehensive win, beating Botany Downs 7-0. Victories followed against St Peter’s Cambridge (2-0) and Pakuranga College before a loss to

Athletics AVCOL ATHLETES WIN CHALLENGE CUP Four weeks of intense athletic competition saw Avondale College bring home a new trophy for the cabinet – the Auckland Secondary Schools’ Challenge Cup! Our twelve athletes absolutely smashed the competition across all events, beating 45 other secondary schools to win the cup by an accumulated total of 2329 points – that’s 1380 points ahead of the next school, Mt Albert Grammar! The win put the team in good heart as they headed to Hastings the following weekend for the National Secondary Schools competition, where again they performed extremely well.
NZ SECONDARY SCHOOLS ATHLETICS NATIONALS Twelve Avondale College athletes headed down to Hastings for the NZSS Athletics nationals from 1- 4 December. For many of the group this was their first experience of such a high level of athletic competition, and the three days saw many achieve personal bests as well as very creditable New Zealand rankings in their individual events. Highlights over the weekend included Year 9 runner Joanna Poland placing fourth in the Junior Girls 800m and 11th in the 1500m against some much bigger runners in the U16 girls' group. Hurdler Joshua Saluni placed 6th in the Junior Boys 100m hurdles and Grace Nweke jumped her way to 4th place in New Zealand in the Junior Girls High Jump, clearing a height of 1.61m. Another highlight was watching Lomanec Ianga ignore his broken foot to throw his discus an amazing 32.07m from a standing position – placing 19th in New Zealand, moon boot and all! All students were fantastic ambassadors for our school and their sport as they supported each other throughout the weekend and the experience gained by this young group will be invaluable. Many thanks go to manager Ms Judith Revell and Deputy Principal Dr Terry Brown for their support and encouragement of the team. ALUMNI NADIA LIM Former prefect Nadia Lim continues to go from strength to strength! The My Food Bag co-founder won the Supreme Award for her Nadia Magazine this year, and launched a new cookbook, Let’s Eat! Avondale College was proud to host the Auckland launch party for this sold-out event. We were also delighted when Nadia popped in to spend time with some Food Technology classes in October!
SAMM IE CAM P BEL L Sammie Campbell (who was the lead in Avcol's production of Hairspray last year) said "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" when the producers of Mamma Mia! came calling. She will take on the lead role of Sophie in ATC's production in March 2018. In the meantime, Sammie joined forces with other Avcol alumni, Kristen Paulse and Katherine Cornish, in ATC's acclaimed production of Sister Act in November and December 2017.
SELINA TUSITAL A MARSH Avcol alumna Selina Tusitala Marsh was appointed New Zealand’s Poet Laureate this year. The celebrated poet-scholar was the first Pasifika student to graduate with a PhD in English from Auckland University, where she’s now an Associate Professor lecturing in creative writing and Pacific literature.
KIRST Y YALLOP
Football Fern Kirsty Yallop stepped down after a 13 year career with the national side. The Football Ferns - now established in the world’s top 20 – have made staggering progress since Yallop’s first cap in 2004. “It’s been an amazing journey, filled with ups and downs. I’ve been so proud to be a part of this team and now I just want to start to focus on other things in life and enjoy my last year or two of playing football,” she told media when announcing her retirement.
MALIK M EIO UL I Former Avondale College Gateway student Malik Meiouli was named ‘Year 3 Apprentice of the Year’ at the ITAB Building Apprenticeship Awards. Malik has been working with PW Construction Limited following a work placement while at college with Hargraves Homes.
RO SE MCIVER Rose McIver’s career continues to flourish in Hollywood, with her series iZombie (in which she plays the lead character, Liv) being renewed for its fourth season. Rose also starred in Netflix’s Christmas release: A Prince for Christmas.
