Nashik Order Details

The seed drill here has a new mechanism in the seed box, which Parhate ji is developing in the translation of the movement of the worker’s hand while feeding seed into the seed funnel of the conventional seed drill. The lateral to and fro motion of the thumb against the fingers is translated into a pendulum with a hung axle on top, and due to the motion of the machinery the pendulum with a pointed end will move in the hole from where the seed falls, where the frequency of the seeding is regulated, while in the bottom of the hole is a strip with varying sizes of the hole from which the seed will fall regulating the size + amount of seeds falling. One can vary the size of the hole by moving the steel strip across the hole - for small sized seed small hole for controlled seeding or big hole for more seeds to fall and so on. This machine is being made for the new Nashik orders and in continuation of his new developments. On the edge of the frame there is another strip inverting which one could attach tyres to the machine while transporting across fields, otherwise in normal condition the steel tures will be used for motion while seeding.

The Rotaweighter machine here again ordered for Nashik sees an addition of 6 plain extra discs, to be attached in place of the teethered rotors.

Shri Sham Rao Parhate On the new order for machineries : Parahate ji mentions about the Nashik orders and says its probably the people in M.P. who do not want to try things new, unlike people from Maharashtra, citing the Nashik example. Those orders have been due for March 25, 2008 but he hasn’t been able to finish making the machinery, which is due to the reason that there is electricity problems in the region and secondly the assembly for machines in less quantity demands managing a lot of things at a time. It becomes economical and exciting to manufacture if there are bulk orders, though he is happy wih the Nashik orders as he says that the team comprised of people who took time to understand the innovation and the machinery. With a M.Tech person, Mr. Prabahaker D. Moranker and an engineer (Mr. Bhasker Mate) accompanying them, it has been a thorough explaining session with them, and they are convinced of the multifunctionality of the machines and its value. He plans to deliever the machines in a couple of weeks now.

On his potential buyers : Parhate ji strongly believes that the value of his innovations could be understood by a person if he is interested to try them, to first listen about the machines, be knowledgeable about them and be enthusiastic about his work and thus will then be able to appreciate them. He strongly feels that the farmer should first understand the functioning of the machinery, understand it and then decide. To but or not, is not what Parhate ji seemed to be concerned with only, but the interest to understand its utility is what he believes comes preceding to the buying option.

He mentions that farmers do approach him in his workshop, look at the machines but would not ask about it, and this he mentions he doesn’t like. Until the farmer feels interested to show his enthusiasm towards the machine he doesn’t find it intersting to explain to him the benefits of it. And this seemingly appears to be one reason that he has not been able to convert his innovation into profits. He asserts that the farmer should make an enquiry to him on the machine but it appears the cost and the first impression of the complexity in the makeup of the machine appears resisting to them to enquire.

Citing a passing by Rajasthani farmer some 6 months back, mentioning his interest to understand the machine and thereafter proposing to but one next year, he says, people otherwise here do not seem to be interested to give time to understand his machineries, while sometimes he fails to give time to them. He says that it would be wonderful if he demonstrates in a mass gathering and then see the potentiality of sales of his machines.

On Modifications and Changes and their acceptabiltiy : With the new orders he has been asked to make a few changes in two machineries (refer video no. ), which he is happy to entertain as the Nashik team understood their requirements and the machinery well, and thus it seemed reasonable to him to implement those modifications. Mentionably the changes are : 1. in Rotaweighter machinery - 6 extra plain discs to cut grass 2. in ‘Dora’ machine - 5 ectra teeth to utilize it for ‘Baakhar’ also.

He mentions that he nneds the farmer to discuss his machine, give him feedback on its working, throw him challeneges, propose and suggest, which could make it exciting for him to work further on these machines.

Else he thinks that the machines presently are made good for the functions. Mentioning in specific about the Rassi His past life and its discussions reverted back all through the meeting and those anecdotes of the Chief Municipal Officer and the Radio interest, SIEMENS agency etc. formed the main body of the meeting. He mentions that he feels the pain of not getting educated well, and thus sums it up into some the following quotes, on his background, “ Ichcha to hawai jahaj ki ho, chahe bus ke paise na ho.” and “kwaab, ke paise to nahi lagte.”

In his opinion being asked about the CIAE, Bhopal machinery, he mentions that the machine doesnot have the flexibility in seed dropping with change in seed no. and as suggested by Mr. Deshmukh, it sees seed damage.

On Promotion of his innovations : Parhate ji mentions that there are no Krishi Mela which happens in the region and thus there are not many chances to demonstrate his work. Citing the Krishi Mela organized at Katol (by Mr. Sunil Shinde) in January month had only machines and other stuff, but no agricultural implements.

His trials to approach government through MLAs, have also failed due to their demands of heavy commisiion and ego issues, feeling it shall become conflicting to their egos for scientists otherwise in governmental departments to accept the bebefits of his innovations over their recommended and designed machines.

In the latest developments, he mentions that Mr. Shanker Acharya (Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, Durgapur, West Bengal) is to come on 6th may,2008 to see his machines, discuss, advice and suggest.

Folder called, ‘farmer and parhate’ contains video, where he is explaining the function of his machines to a farmer who was visiting him then, it also demonstrated the profit calculation to the farmer by Parhate ji. Deshmukhs have been using presently 3 machines made by Parhate ji and says that their farms are like the testing laboratory for his machines.Thus their friencly relations have allowed them to try his machines and for Parhate ji to test its functionality. They are in praise of his machines, stating that last year due to good rainfall (3 times than normal) our crops performed well as the added advantage through his machines is provided due to aeration of the soil, accorded to the design of the teethered broad tynes. It works as weeder as well.

They opine on the fact that the sales f his machines has not been encouraging as it lacks advertising, while word of mouth works mostly in rural regions, which could contribute but with government unineterested it seems it needs promotion, termed in his words as, ‘Media Hammering’. Deshmukhs are a well connected farmer with news of the region and around and thus well to do farmers with their agricultural produce. And this accounts to the reason that they are open for experimentation in their farms. Their view on CIAE machine, as they themselves have one lies that the single function use and the bad quality of materials used in its manufacturing is the reason that they do not use it. The easy availability cost wise is not a charm for them, though they opine it to be for many other farmers, who wouldn’t feel open to experiment with the multifunctional model of Parhate ji. The flexibility offered by his(Parhate ji) machines for multi crop culture is the feature suited to their needs in farming.

Also according to them, the University Research department at the JNKVV (Jawaher lal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Chhindwara- 100 kms from Pandurna), is uninterested to do include Parhat ji’s machine for research to assess it bebefits.

MP Agro Industries give subsidies to farmers on CIAE machines to 50%, while about 75% to reserved casts of farmers for over 5-6 years has been the incentives for other farmers to purchase their machines, where they undermine all other factors termed as benefits offered by Parhat ji’s machines.

Their opinion on Parhate ji’s approach towards designing of the machines is flexible as he starts the design with the idea of alteration to followed, as required by the user, thus any alteration, as and when required is not difficult to be integrated in his design. They acknowledge that his machines saves labour costs, a very important factor, as with the promotion of the ‘Pradhanmantri Rozgaar Yojana’, there is less labour(70 Rs. / day * 3 labourers = 210 Rs./day) available in the farms and thus the labour saving intention in the design is very significant in Parhate ji’s design. Besides this the uneven spread of seeds is better avoided by his machines, no matter how fast or slow you run the machinery with the bullocks. This regulated spacing achieved from his machines is a good advantage to ensure good yield through various processes (regulated and proper weeding etc.). This above mentioned advantage manages an equivalent plant population as compared to the conventional plant population.This feature remarkedly mentions that his(Parhate ji’s) machines are suited for farmers with the desire for proper farming, in terms of proper crop population and spacing and a systemetic patterning of plants, a quality which is much well understood by experienced farmers, who thinks, understands to make a systematic approach towards profit making from his yields.

They grow wheat, chana, jowar, corn, soya, groundnut and cotton - a multi crop pattern spread over 35-40 acres of land. Besides this they have farms present in split measurements across the village and thus their overall land appears to be more than the above mentioned area.

Apparent from the discussion and in coherence to Parhate ji’s mention between the difference in the farmers from M.P. and Maharashtra, their mentality and the agriculture setup between the two states, it is conclusive here that the freedom that a farmer enjoys in Maharashtra is a bebefit than to a farmer in M.P. In M.P. the sourcing for the farmer for agricultural machinery is through government offices and thus there is no choice on offer for the variety of machinery. The only accepted and promoted machinery from CIAE is in rotation for over many years without any modifications or improvization. Also the quality there is poor, and in case if some part breaks, the farmer has to manage on his own to fix it.While in Maharashtra, the farmer approaches to the dealers appointed by government, where he selects the company and take home the machine.

According to them, there are no fabricators in their knowledge to source such machinery in the region. Some farmers approach to Nagpur, next to the Pandurna market to source them.

They have been using Parhate ji’s machne for 2 seasons now and this is going to be their 3rd season.They find it convinient to use his machines as they use over their large land holdings in farming in rotation, as this gives the idea that the cost sometimes become prohibitive to small farmers.

Mr. Shivdayal Dongre (on whose farms the demonstration by Maheshwari was just the last year) seems to be telling that the benefit of his machines is that the tyne allows good aeration to the soil, and the wheel distancing for multi crop culture use, are special features of importance.

Both seemed to be agreeing on tha fact that people in the region are still continuing with the conventional wooden models for ploughing and cultivating, as there are a lot of jungles around and the manufacturing of such simple conventional tools doesn’t require special skill by the fabricator, allowing the farmer to arrange them from local workshops, who will make them simply as imitating the conventional models.

Mr. Ramesh Bhai Khetal Mr. Ramesh Bhai Khetal, feels that Parhate ji uses good quality of matrial in his equipments, and the reason that he has not been able to sell much is due to the lack of advertising. He feels that there is a lot of old generation people who are working in farming but they refrain from using new implements. He emntions that there are no ‘Krishi Mela’, which happens in the region, where one could get the opportunity to display his work/ machineries etc. and the nearest one happens in Nagpur is not good, while the Pune Krishi Mela turns far from here, which is apparently useful.

In his opinion farmers manage in Pandurna to buy implements from ‘Bajrang Iron Store’ or ‘Praful Iron Store’, while approaching them it became clear that there is not much of local demand and thus they get ti arranged from Multai whenever there is an order.

Mr. Khetal also feels that these machines being good should be made to come under the purview of provision of subsidies by government, as the amount quoted with them for small farmers in the region is a little more than they can manage in the limits of convinience. They have rather been prefering to arrange it from neighbours or do away with the cheap Government models. The small land holdings there, also forces them to resist buying such implements, while asserting that the sophistication of the machinery is not much of hindrance to th users. He believes farmers could in time learn to use them and manage the sophistication involved, if incentives are good, in terms of subsidies etc from Government, though incentives in therms of functionality and utility of the machines are proves good for him.

He felt satisified with the use of machines in his farms but concludingly felt the need for promotion of his machineries of their multifunctionality through advertising and incentive promotion by subsidizing. He feels that farmers like him, who are settled with their pattern of farming can afford these implements and thus they could enjoy the added usage of these implements.

Mr. Mohammed Gaznani ‘Naagar’ at sale in market.

Mr. Mohammed Gaznani, owner of Taha Industries in Multai, are the major fabricators and manufacturers of seed drills machines. They have supplied to the MP Agrotech sometime back. They manufacture the following - Tractor trolley, hydraulic trolley, water tanker, tractor dozer and loader, leveller, seed dill, hadamba, threshers.

Seed Drill Mechanism

They manufacture and sell two types of seed drills : 1. ‘Tifan’ : @ 1850 Rs., most pouplar, sold over Bhandara, Gondia, near Amravati and in the regions of Itarsi also. It is quite in demand, popular with small farmer. It has single function and they sell about 3000 pieces in one season. They have been selling it for years now. The reason for its pouplrity is the cost, which is affordable for a small farmer.

2. Seed Drill : (as attached photograph) @ 7500 Rs. for 5 tynes and 6500 Rs, for 3 tynes. This seed drill has the box where the farmer can fill simultaneoulsy manure as well as seeds. States as their own design, it has chain socket mechanism, but does not allows multifuncitonality as Parhate ji’s machinery.

According to him there is a Nagpur style eed drill also present but is not much successful in their region.

Good to grow soya, wheat and chana, it has been in production for a year now. The sales touches about 200-250 pieces in one season.

Sold mostly in June, August and September months, they assert that their machines are successful in this region.

According to him, the market for such implements after Multai is Nagpur for farmers. Amongst their own manufacturing they are trying to make a machine which will achieve the work done by JCB from a tractor of small capacity of 10 HP, in comparison to 30 HP machines. Presently they are involved in making of big machineries for agricultural purposes due to good profits there against small agicultural implements, which they believe are in sales in quantum of their regular models.

People’s view and awareness on Parhate ji’s Innovations : 1. Mr. Alok Nahar Nahar Fertilizers, Bus Stand, Pandurna He knows about the multipurpose functionality of Parhate ji’s machine. He has seen it during some demonstration but opines it being costly for farmers, though being a good machine. He feels if subsidized, it could pick up amongst farmers.

Mr. Suresh Taywade

He knows Parhate ji for many years and have been helping him over his projects. He says, “He(Parhate ji) is a genius.” He is well aware of his works of his initial career to the present projects (the transportation project etc.)

He opines that being a Maharashtrian he has failed to be a good marketing person for his own innovations though he is passionate about making of those machines.

He himself has designed a Nasal Filter (Patented), named as ‘DUST-FREE’ (information brochure and sample included) and because of his teaching background and research background he has been in help of Parhate ji for discussions.

6. Mr. Shailesh Bhai Shah Shri Shah Krishi Kendra, Bus Stand, Pandurna He is aware about the seed drill innovation of Parhate ji and says his sons are also good at engineering works, though mentions that farmers do not understand it well. Conventional mind of farmers and resistance to forwardness in agricultural practicesis the reason that they do not want to use machines. Small land holdings on the other hand is reasoned for it also, as mostly farmers here have 5-10 acres of land holdings, 10-12 acres is big land holding in this region. They mostly manage bnyborrowing from each other for this small use of machines during the season. Besides that many plant oranges here, which doesnot need these equipments.

7. Mr. M.P Akhare Retired ACDO, approached at Nahar Fertilizers He is aware of Parhate ji’s earlier attempts at vermi composting and drip irrigation in his own field, though feels that the government has failed to give leverage to his innovations and this accounts for failure over the issue of accruing sales for his machines.

Conclusions : On survey regarding the knowledge and awareness about Parhate ji’s innovations, it became apparent that people have most likely heard about him regarding the recognition he has recieved, but are not much in knowledge of what exactly he has designed. They know he runs an Engineering workshop and has most likey been related to the manufacturing of agricultural implements but the specificity of his work is not much known. He is respected in the town for his work and in the survey it was clear that people knew him or had heard about him. Stores specifically dealing with the products of agriculture, viz. Fertilizer stores, Iron works, are the places where there appeared to be knowledge of his works known, but detailed information of his works is still not much in knowledge of people of his town.

There had been a few more people contacted during the survey regarding the same issue, but their responses relate in same tone with those mentioned in the report and thus have not mentioned in person further. Few of the farmers in the nearby village were contacted Further list of video and photographs: to enquire about his innovations but the nature of their responses tell about their lack of information on him and his work.

Gondal Market Yard, according to people has been the first market yard in Saurashtra region and it specializes in dealing with 4 varieties of chilly : Doublepatta, Reshampatta, Double Reshampatta, Golar.

Difference between Doublepattu and Reshampattu is that the former has medium pungency as compared to Reshampattu which is more pungent (a

contradiction than the earlier trader). While the size differs as Doublepaatu is small in length as compared to Reshampattu which is long. Number of seeds does not vary between the two species. Yield of Doublepattu from 1 vigha land is 20-25 mann. (400-500 kg) while that of Reshampattu is 30 mann (600 kg.)

Reshampaatu according to him is only 10-15 years old.

Difference between Reshampattu belonging to Gujarat region and Warrangal region, is that the former’s shelf life in powder form is 1 yr, while that if the other is 2 yrs. All Reshampaatu found in this season is from nearby villages while when the present stocks finishes, then the Warrangal variety arrives in the market.

Reshampattu from Jamnagar weighs 30 kg in a standard bag, while the Gondal variety weighs 10 kg. with the former having more seeds than the later. : Dhiru bhai Papat (48 yrs) 997953829 According to him Reshampattu is 70 years old variety, and all the stock arrives from nearby villages. According to him the shelf life of Gondal variety Reshampattu powder is 4 mnths, while that of Warrangal is 12 mnths.

According to him, Reshampatta is very old and its cultivation is in practice for years unremembered. He has been cultivating it for about 4-5 years, for about 1-5 vigha every year. Total cultivated area in this village is about 500 vigha.

Besides this cotton, groundnut, wheat and soar gum is being cultivated, in the whole region.

Price of 20kg. Golar is about 2000 Rs., Reshampatta : 1500-1700 Rs., Doublepatta yields more than Reshampatta, when compared in the same area of land and thus the price of the later is more than the former.

Profit from 1 vigha cultivation of Reshampatta will be about 30,000-35,000 Rs. He uses bullock saanti.

Presently the last one to have the crop of Double Reshampatta in this region.

Manufacturer of all farming equipments and manufactures bullock driven sprayers used mainly in Bt. Cotton, groundnut, Castor and Pigeon Pea (Tuvar).

Capacity of Bullock Saanti sprayer according to him is 50-60 vigha/day. The bullock sprayer is driven by an engine of 3.5 HP, claiming that he made it first in Gondal region and is still the sole manufacturer of the sprayer. He has been manufacturing farming implements since 1964, along with bullock sprayer.

According to him, Bullet Saanti will fail here because of the reason that the soil here is softer than the soil of Amreli, where it is hard and could move on surface, which otherwise it will sink in the soil here.

Bullock sprayer are 30 ft long and in groundnut crop, it will cover 10 lines, while in cotton 5 lines. Sold at 50,000 Rs.

He manufactures Mini Tractor, imitations of company made tractors, and says mini tractor is prevalent here, because of its good capacity towards output and thus mini tractor is preferred. Sold at 1,60,000 Rs.

He is planning to purchase Bullet Saanti, after testing it from Panchavada village, from Laksham bhai Boradia, at the rate of 24,500 Rs. while Lakshan bhai has bought from Mansukhbahi of Devaria. He intends to systemize agriculture and that is the reason that he wants to buy Bullet Saanti for cotton, groundnut. This shall be the first Bullet Saanti in Ramod, and intends to cultivate 40 vigha from 10 litres of diesel. He intends to use in summer if it doesn’t work well in Kharif season. There are about 4-5 Bullet Saanti in the village while the one he uses has a rickshaw engine in it. He has 18 vigha of land, and has been using it for 7 years now. He took away the hydraulic part from it due to increased vibrations in Saanti. He uses it for cultivation of cotton and groundnut and says he purchased it from Mansukbhai Jaghani of Devaria,(@20,000 Rs.) and says it uses less diesel for growing them.

Vanji bhai Govindbhai Butaan (56 yrs.) standard.

He bought Bullet Saanti for 70,000 Rs. (second hand) with reverse gear and manual lift, and cultivates on 14 vigha of land for cotton and groundnut. It gives 4-5 vigha cultivation in 1 litre diesel. He has been using for a year now, and bought it from Gopal bhai Jayram, from his village, who bought it @ 1,00,000 Rs., who was using it for 5 years till then for groundnut and cotton. And he was involved in selection procedure of good chilly related to Reshampatta.

Soil : Soft soil and is the reason that Bullet Saanti could not be a success here, as what people believe here. This may not work here as during the monsoons,

it will sink in the land. Though the landscape is dotted with Neem scarcely and some dry plants like Babool, the soil is black and brown in colour.

Conclusion : Bullet Saanti, after survey it was found to be not in use in this region due to the difference in soil conditions of this region with that of Amreli.
