With the COVID-19 pandemic still wreaking havoc in our community, we act and adapt continuously to ensure Avivo participants receive recovery, housing, training and career advancement supports they need to succeed. Tonight, we celebrate Avivo Champions – individuals and partners who have an unwavering commitment to our mission. They inspire us to aim high in helping people transform their lives for lasting success. Look at what we have done together. Last year: • Avivo Village opened and provided shelter and services to 228 individuals. • Nearly 1,500 people entered jobs or careers. • More than 1,600 individuals were served to find or maintain housing. • 1,250 individuals and their families moved off welfare to work. • 3,200 people accessed treatment and mental health services. Because of you, Avivo was HERE, providing hope and services for individuals who need our support the most. Our unique combination of services helps people secure paths to better health, stability and advancement. KEYNOTE Sean Sherman Founder/CEO Chef The Sioux Chef Sean Sherman, Oglala Lakota, has been cooking across the U.S. and world for the last 30 years. His main culinary focus has been on the revitalization and awareness of Indigenous food systems in a modern culinary context. With co-owner Dana Thompson, he opened The Sioux Chef in 2014 as a caterer and food educator. The Sioux Chef team works to make Indigenous foods more accessible to as many communities as possible. They opened the highly acclaimed, full-service Indigenous restaurant Owamni in Minneapolis’ downtown riverfront in 2021. To open opportunities for more people to learn about Native cuisine and develop food enterprises in their tribal communities, Sherman and Thompson founded the nonprofit North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems (NATIFS). Chef Sean and his vision of modern Indigenous foods have been featured in numerous articles and radio shows, along with dinners at the James Beard House in Manhattan and Milan, along with teaching and sharing his knowledge to gatherings and crowds at Yale, the Culinary Institute of America, the United Nations, and many more. Sean has been the recipient of a 2015 First Peoples Fund Fellowship, 2018 Bush Foundation Fellowship, National Center’s 2018 First American Entrepreneurship Award, 2018 James Beard Award for Best American Cookbook, and a 2019 James Beard Leadership Award.

ENTERTAINMENT Harley Wood Minnesota vocalist and musician Harley Wood is an accomplished vocalist, performer and songwriter. He has extensive experience in stage and studio production, engineering, choreography, working as a band leader and performer, with an impressive collaborative list of established artists and entertainers. He has training in theater, voice and stage performance (solo and collaborative), and he is a self-taught musician including acoustic and electric guitar, bass, percussion and keyboard instrumentation.
George Maurer Composer and pianist Minneapolis-based pianist George Maurer is well-known for his work as a performer, arranger, music director and jazz composer. He’s performed with Eric Clapton, shared the stage with Bruno Mars, and served as symphonic music director of the Midtown Men, featuring members of Broadway’s original Grammy-awarded and Tony-winning “Jersey Boys” cast. His arrangements have been debuted and performed by symphonies across the U.S. His numerous awards and appointments include two McKnight Composer Fellowships (2014, 2021), and he has been called upon to compose and arrange music for film, theater and ballet.
EMCEE Kiya Edwards KARE 11 News Reporter Kiya Edwards is a news reporter currently working at KARE 11 News in the Twin Cities. She has worked at several stations, nationally and internationally. She worked previously at KSDK News in St. Louis, Missouri, and KWQC-TV6 News in Davenport, Iowa. She also worked at Africa 24 Media, based in Nairobi, Kenya, where she travelled internationally, covering various stories within each place. 2022 Avivo Champion Awards Avivo Champion - Special Award
Avivo Village Team Champion Amidst the uprising following the murder of George Floyd and the global pandemic, a unique group of individuals designed an alternative, shelter-response to the critical situation of people living in encampments. They created the Indoor Villages concept. An additional, unlikely combination of people – individuals with lived experience of unsheltered homelessness, as well as philanthropic leaders, local elected officials, community advocates and social service providers – set out to turn the concept into reality. Their efforts helped create the first-ever, indoor shelter of 100 tiny houses -- a low-barrier, culturally responsive, COVID-safe transitional housing shelter with a full continuum of services, operated by Avivo. Generous funding has been provided from state, county and city sources, and includes community development funding the City of Minneapolis approved from the CARES Act. We are proud to receive generous funding support from Target, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, Lynne and Andrew Redleaf Foundation, the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation Fund of The Minneapolis Foundation, Colonial Church, and other philanthropic support. Jim Eaton and Colonial Church Colonial Church member Jim Eaton sponsored Avivo Village in a rigorous review process for the church’s Blessings Initiative funding. He was a true champion, representing the need for funding for Avivo and helping secure a significant gift. In addition to Colonial Church’s generous gift, church members have committed numerous volunteer hours for Avivo Village. They have bought and assembled welcome baskets for Avivo Village residents, purchased holiday gifts and provided pies for two holiday meals, and more! Jim’s wife Susan rallied her quilting club members to make quilts for residents. Their giving creates a sense of home for residents. We remain grateful for this growing partnership!

The Kingdom Builders, Plekkenpol Builders, and John Kraemer & Sons With generous funding from Housing First Minnesota Foundation and the Aimee and Patrick Butler Family Foundation, these three build partners volunteered their labor to demolish and remodel six apartment units in our family recovery housing. Complete with new windows, fixtures, appliances, cabinets and flooring, these apartment homes mean the world to the mothers and children who move in. Families feel welcome. For many, it is the first time they have ever had their own place. Their contributions will give the gift of home for decades to come.

Native American Community Clinic (NACC) The Native American Community Clinic has been a community partner since 2018. In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic began to erupt, NACC helped equip Avivo to provide COVID-safe care. They helped Avivo obtain PPE and provided medical support and telehealth visits for individuals in Avivo’s Hotel to Home program. They held on- and off-site vaccination clinics for staff and participants. They provided testing at Avivo Village and for a number of our housing locations, our treatment programs and Minneapolis office location. They provide invaluable counsel for staff on Native American culture and treatment, healthcare and COVID awareness. We are looking forward to deepening our partnership to continue providing culturally relevant, quality care.
Pamela’s story “[Jacqueline at Avivo helped me] with continuing my course work at Avivo... connecting me to interviewing... and Avivo’s [UBI] grant program.” When the pandemic hit in March 2020, Pamela’s training halted. She lost supports and could not work. With Avivo’s help, she completed her training and found employment. Participating in Avivo’s guaranteed income pilot program gave her regular monthly income that helped her focus. Eric’s story “Being in my own housing has really given me purpose. I see good things in my future. The future’s looking great for me.” Eric was living on the streets for five years and trying to hold down a job. A street outreach worker helped him get into Avivo Village, our transitional housing shelter focused on helping individuals find permanent housing. He was connected with the supports he needed to move into an affordable apartment. He is working on his career and life goals. Having a home allows him to spend time with his children.

Sharon’s story “I know for a fact that if I didn’t have housing when I went to Avivo I would’ve been good for maybe three months... having somewhere to lay your head at, to be safe... that sense of security through your journey is crucial.” Because mothers can go through treatment at Avivo with their children, Sharon reunited with her 15-year-old daughter when she entered Avivo’s program. She shared it was “better than Christmas!” Now two years in recovery, they’ve moved into their own apartment. Sharon is working for an emergency shelter for homeless youth and happy she is able to give back.
