Women & Children First began in a modest storefront in 1979 and has called Andersonville home for more than 30 years. WCF staffers include teachers, graduate students, actors, storytellers, activists, mothers, board members, and published authors. Each of them is a reader, a feminist, and a bookseller. One of the largest feminist bookstores in the country, WCF stocks more than 20,000 books by and about women, children’s books, and the best LGBTQIA+ literature.

They also carry cards, journals, posters, calendars, buttons, flags, and more.

WCF has hosted hundreds of great women authors and feminist icons, including Gloria Steinem, Maya Angelou, Roxane Gay, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Ann Patchett, Sandra Cisneros, Laura Jane Grace. With the support of their amazing community, they are able to build mission-driven partnerships, like donating more than 1,000 books each year to Chicago Books to Women in Prison. Co-owner Sarah Hollenbeck’s favorite thing about co-owning the shop is, of course, talking about books! “Communing around a book can propel a conversation in a million exciting directions–personal, political, and more. Welcome to Andersonville. A neighborhood on Chicago’s north side, Andersonville is known for its Swedish roots, historic architecture, and bustling business district anchored by North Clark Street. When you arrive in Andersonville, you feel you have arrived someplace special. We are recognized as the “shop local capital of Chicago,”supporting the largest network of local and independent businesses in the area, including oneof-a-kind retailers, popular cafes and restaurants, a home and vintage district, theaters, and more. Home to one of Chicago’s largest LGBTQIA2+ populations, Andersonville is a community full of pride and a commitment to equality. Andersonville is for everyone.

We are also a neighborhood of stories. We hope you discover these stories throughout the pages of this guide (which features the nearly 400 businesses that are members of the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce), and by eventually visiting Andersonville and meeting our business owners face to face. Swedish American Museum 5211 N Clark

Chicago was once the home of the second-largest Swedish population in the world, second only to Stockholm! So it’s not surprising that the Swedish American Museum, opened in 1976 by Swedish immigrant Kurt Mathiasson, has been a cornerstone of the Andersonville community for more than 45 years. Its permanent exhibit tells the story of Swedish immigration, which resonates with visitors regardless of their family’s country of origin. Constantly evolving, you can enjoy the new courtyard and watch the addition of a permanent café and expansion into the building next door, which will complement the Museum’s art exhibits, genealogy center, children’s museum, and museum store. swedishamericanmuseum.org

The Chicago area is located on ancestral lands of indigenous tribes, such as the Council of the Three Fires comprised of the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations—as well as the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac, Fox, Kickapoo, and Illinois Nations.

Native Indigenous People made Chicago their home and played a role in founding the city only to be forcefully removed in the 1830s.

These tribes had thriving trade networks in the Menominee Nation Great Lakes area prior to European contact. The tribes in what is now Chicago and the Great Lakes area would feel the brunt of many land cessations and several relocation efforts over the coming years.

The Andersonville Commercial Historic District is closely associated with the Swedish community that moved to the neighborhood following the Chicago Fire in 1871. The district contains fully intact turn-of-the century commercial buildings that represent the popular architectural styles of the time. Many Swedish run companies, theaters, retail shops, bakeries, and banks thrived in the area. The earliest buildings in the downtown district included a school house at the southwest corner of Clark and Foster, which bore the name Andersonville Schoolhouse. The school spurred nearby development and the name of the community became Andersonville.

Life at the Intersections Designed and painted by Molly Costello in the summer of 2021 with assistance from Nell Seggerson and Rae Wilson. The project was funded by the Chicago Association of Realtors®, the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce, and SSA #22.

Settling in Andersonville in 1990, Women and Children First Bookstore has acted as a respite for the LGBTQIA2+ community rooted in its dedication to intersectional feminism and lifting up underrepresented voices. In 2018, work began to uplift the Transgender community and in 2019, we gathered together with Chicago Therapy Collective for a chalk activation to celebrate and protect trans lives. Today, emboldened to take a hard look at our privilege, we are committed to anti-racist work by engaging our BIPOC members and partners and will use our collective voice and influence to drive racial equity impact and change and to advocate for those whose voices have historically been discounted or silenced.

“Life at the Intersections’ pushes us to imagine a safer, more inclusive future that honors the intersections of our identities and helps us generate a future of collective wellness, environmental stewardship, abundance and play.”

Molly Costello (they/them) is a queer illustrator, food grower, bee keeper, and seed saver living in Rogers Park. Through their art practice they explore themes of interconnectedness, cosmology, biomimicry and social transformation. Molly hopes that through the making and sharing of their artwork they can play a small role in the deep work of reimaging and reshaping our culture out of patterns of supremacy, violence and greed toward a culture of accountability, collective wellness, and abundance. mollycostello.com

Midsommarfest is Andersonville’s signature summer festival, with roots going back more than 55 years. Midsommarfest is also one of the largest and oldest street festivals in the City of Chicago. It is celebrated on the second full weekend of June to commemorate the traditional Swedish holiday of Midsommar, which falls at the summer solstice. In 2022, the event runs along Clark Street from Foster to Catalpa June 10-12. andersonville.org/events/midsommarfest

The Always Andersonville Podcast shares the stories of Andersonville. Since the launch of the podcast in March of 2018, the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce has interviewed over 150 business owners, musicians, long-time and new residents, elected officials, changemakers, and more.

Why do a podcast about a neighborhood? There is something unique and universal about working, living, visiting somewhere that has a sense of place.

That sense of place in Andersonville is derived from a rich and celebrated history; from an engaged community and engaged citizens; from the blood, sweat and tears of small business owners—all those things contribute to a strong sense of place. When you arrive in Andersonville, you feel you have arrived somewhere different.

Helping all kinds of folks have great sex since 2001, Early to Bed is committed to offering a safe, welcoming space to shop for erotic delights. Owner Searah Deysach fell in love with Andersonville’s inclusivity back in high school. That inspiration has translated into her store, and Early to Bed’s goal is to make a first-time sex shop experience comfortable, fun, and not scary. The area that we now call Chicago is the traditional homeland of the people of the Council of Three Fires. This area has long been a vibrant site of trade, life, and community-making for many Indigenous nations and is now home to 65,000 American Indian people. As the current occupants of this land, many of us are here as a legacy of the forced removal of Indigenous Peoples by a settler-colonial state. Known in the early ‘90s as a safe haven for Chicago’s LGBTQIA2+ community, Andersonville has now blossomed into one of the queerest areas of the city. In addition to our residents, we have a substantial density of LGBTQIA2+ owned businesses, nightlife, and local talent. The Andersonville Chamber of Commerce strives to support the movements and events in our neighborhood that align with our organizational values of equality, inclusion, and anti-racism. We work to make strategic changes within the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce as well as in the membership and wider community.

This work centers on offering resources and trainings to neighborhood business owners and employees on the necessary and urgent work around anti-racism and allyship to the transgender/non-binary community, as well as neurodiverse and other differently abled populations to provide safe and accessible spaces for all.

What is an SSA?

A “Special Service Area” is a local tax district that funds enhanced services and programs within a contiguous area. The enhanced services and programs are in addition to those currently provided through or by the City of Chicago. SSA-funded projects typically include public way maintenance and beautification, district marketing and advertising, business retention and attraction, special events and promotional activities, security and façade improvements, and other commercial and economic development initiatives.

The Andersonville SSA includes our major commercial district of Clark Street Ainslie to the south and Victoria and reaches east and west to the alley-ways, with the exception of Foster and Balmoral where it extends to Ashland Avenue as well as Olive where it wraps around to the split of Clark and Ashland. SSA 22 includes Ainslie to the south, Victoria to the north and the wonderful mile in between.

We welcome Patch Landscaping as our SSA #22 Landscaping and weeding contracts to help beautify our Historic District. Illinois native plants are included in all 51 planters that reside along our district.

The SoFo Tap 4923 N Clark / Meeting House Tavern 5025 N Clark 2Bears Tavern Group, which owns and operates The SoFo Tap and Meeting House Tavern, prides itself on providing safe and inclusive LGBTQIA2+ spaces, and a fun and engaging atmosphere. At The SoFo Tap, an anchor of the revitalized South of Foster area since 2011, guests can enjoy darts, play their favorite jukebox songs, relax on the back patio, or join them for weekly trivia, karaoke, or Doggy Days (every Saturday from 12-3PM). Meeting House Tavern offers a one-of-a-kind gathering space with pool, darts, Skee-Ball, board games, and weekly events, including the Sunday Social variety revue. In March of 2022, 2Bears Tavern Group opened its newest tavern, 2Bears Tavern Uptown, a dog-friendly, late-night LGBTQIA2+ bar located at 1140 W Wilson. Every 2Bears Tavern Group establishment features daily, every day, and happy hour specials.
