AS I LOOK BACK ON THE YEAR, I’m grateful for the stories we’ve shared and the people behind them—designers, chefs, artists and dreamers who make our communities shine. Thank you for being part of it all and for letting us into your homes and hearts each month. Gift-giving isn’t just about boxes, ribbons and bows—it’s about moments. The kind that warm you long after the tree’s packed away and the decorations are boxed up. This month, we’re celebrating those moments of connection through thoughtful gifts, inviting spaces and shared experiences that define the season. Our annual gift guide (Season of Gifting, page 42) goes beyond the typical presents to spotlight local treasures—from pampering spa escapes and dazzling jewelry to rescued tigers and custom golf carts. These gifts have heart and meaning, just like the stories behind them. And because the holidays are best spent gathered around good food and great company, we’ve packed this issue with fresh ways to entertain in style. Step inside two beloved south Denver restaurants reimagined for new dining experiences (Change of Scenery, page 12) and discover how designers are blending warm tones and inviting textures to make the dining room the heart of the home once again (Gather in Style, page 26). Feeling inspired to host? You’ll want to read Perfect for Company (page 34), where we talk kitchens made for entertaining—because we all know that’s where guests inevitably end up.
I’ll be spending the holidays doing exactly what I hope for all of you—slow mornings, good food and a little sparkle. Here’s to closing the year with gratitude and opening the next with possibility.

Jack’s
Two beloved restaurants undergo changes for fresh dining experiences in south Denver By Jay McKinney
WHEN THE WINTER CHILL settles over south Denver, even the most die-hard foodies can be tempted to hibernate. But two beloved restaurants are giving locals every reason to bundle up and head out. Jack’s on Pearl, a favorite known for its wood-fired cuisine and elevated hospitality, is expanding. Jack’s at Lone Tree will open soon, while the longtime Castle Rock institution La Loma steps into a new era as Savina’s Mexican Kitchen. Together, they’re redefining fine dining in the suburbs—proving that comfort and culinary craft can share the same table. There are plenty of restaurants that instill pleasure through first-class hospitality and carefully curated menus. Jack’s at Lone Tree is about to join the ranks (as of press time, it’s scheduled to open in late December). The wood-fired grille solidified itself as a premier dining destination with its first location on Pearl Street in Denver, aptly named Jack’s on 12

Pearl. In December of 2025, the restaurant is opening a second location in Lone Tree. President of Jack’s, Darryl Shoemake is excited to expand the restaurant to a new location with centrality in the south Denver market. Diners will undoubtedly fall in love with the drinks, food and ambiance that made the Pearl Street location a community favorite. The most popular entree on the menu is the champion filet. It’s a mouthwatering 7-ounces topped with foie gras butter, roasted Calabrian peppers and cheesy potato cakes. As the name says, it won the 2023 Denver Rare people’s choice award for best steak. Another award-winning item on the menu is the Soft N’ Smokey, made with Stranahan’s Blue Peak single malt whiskey, house crafted toasted pecan syrup and black walnut bitters. The restaurant ages the whiskey in an oak barrel for a month before macerating it with

// fine dining roasted pecans and apricots and then letting it sit for another six to eight weeks. This process imparts a rich sweetness into the smoked old fashioned that deservedly won the people’s choice award at Stranahan’s Barrel Royale in 2024.
Jack’s
Jack’s is known for its dry-aged fish program. It’s a culinary practice that has been mostly practiced in coastal U.S. cities, but Jack’s is thrilled to introduce Colorado diners to the intense flavors of this style of seafood. From Hawaiian kanpachi yellowtail tuna to Ōra King salmon from New Zealand, the restaurant brings in fish from around the world and dry ages it masterfully. “Dry aged fish is what we specialize in, and we’ve been doing that for almost three years now, so we feel that we’ve got it down to a science,” Shoemake says. Jack’s at Lone Tree is designed to accommodate large parties as the first floor is dedicated to buyouts. Whether it’s an engagement party or a business celebration, the venue seats up to 150 people and features elevated banquet service. Public dining is located on the second floor where diners can enjoy expansive views of the plains.
Savina’s
At Savina’s Mexican Kitchen—formerly La Loma Castle Rock and Downtown—the food, drinks and outstanding service that made it a staple in the Castle Rock culinary scene remain unchanged. The new name honors the woman who started it all, Grandma Savina Mendoza. While her portrait has been prominently displayed in all the restaurant’s locations for years, few people knew that she was the one who crafted the renowned mini chile rellenos and Grandma’s green chile. Mendoza founded the original restaurant in Denver’s Jefferson Park neighborhood in the 1970s. She partnered with Sonny Brinkerhoff in the 1980s and together they grew the business into the beloved Mexican restaurant people know today. Brinkerhoff’s son William eventually took over the reins of the family business and his son Mark Brinkerhoff is the current president and CEO of Brinkerhoff Hospitality. While Mendoza passed away many years ago, the father-son duo is thrilled to honor her legacy as they usher in this new era for an iconic restaurant. “Absolutely nothing has changed except our name,” Mark Brinkerhoff says. “If anything, we’re working harder than ever to honor Grandma Savina’s legacy. With her name now on the door, we feel an even greater responsibility to uphold her standards, making sure every recipe, every dish and every guest experience reflects the same care and hospitality she envisioned more than fifty years ago.” Mark Brinkerhoff is quick to credit the hardworking staff who have made the restaurant what it is today. Some of the staff members have been with the restaurant for more than 40 years and fondly recall Grandma Savina’s meticulous inspection of the daily green chile. The Castle Rock location was made for those who like dining with a view. With 14

Boosting both your confidence and emotional well-being after pregnancy By Amanda Lacey YOU’VE BROUGHT NEW LIFE into the world— and now it’s time to reclaim your own. Motherhood reshapes your body, your priorities and your sense of self in ways no one can fully prepare you for. Between sleepless nights and endless feedings, it’s easy to lose sight of the person you were before “mom.” But when the dust settles and your body begins to heal, carving out space to feel good in your skin again isn’t vanity—it’s recovery. From skincare to surgery, minor tweaks to major transformations, there are plenty of ways to reconnect with the woman behind the mother.

Brinkerhoff Hospitality Returns to its Roots and Renames their Iconic Mexican Restaurants Rooted in a tradition that began in The Highlands over 40 years ago, we begin a new chapter — one that honors our roots and the woman who inspired it all: Grandma Savina Mendoza.
Nothing has changed but the name! The same recipes. The same hospitality. The same faces, owners and the same awardwinning green chile legacy lives on! MOMMY MAKEOVER Pregnancy and breastfeeding can be tremendously rewarding experiences, but they also put stress and strain on your body. You may notice flat or sagging breasts, stubborn fat deposits and excess flabby skin around the abdomen. This is where a customized set of cosmetic surgeries—the mommy makeover— can help you gain control over your body, which has undergone so many changes. A mommy makeover generally includes a tummy tuck, breast lift (and often augmentation), and liposuction, all of which can mitigate the body-altering effects of pregnancy. The best part? This transformation can be more than just cosmetic; it can be physical, emotionally healing and functional. For example, a tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat while tightening weakened or separated abdominal muscles. Surgeons recommended waiting at least six months after you stop breastfeeding so that your body has time to recover and reach its post-baby baseline. It’s also important to remember that this is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and working with a board-certified surgeon to discuss which options best suit your individual needs is a good place to start. FACE FORWARD Even if surgery is not on your bingo card, you can still get a boost of confidence and ease some pressure in your post-baby daily routine. Several treatments can address a range of
skincare concerns, from hydration to resurfacing and more. Alysa Paul, president of Facial Aesthetics, believes in the impact of a proper at-home routine. “At least eighty percent of your skin health is making sure you have a good skincare routine and keeping consistent with it. A good cleanser, antioxidant, moisturizer and SPF will take you a long way,” she says. The team at Facial Aesthetics believes that taking care of your skin is more important than covering it up, and they make it their business to understand what’s going on at a foundational level so they can address your skincare needs and goals. Facials, dermaplaning and DiamondGlow are nursing-safe options that will all help with hydration, texture, fine lines and brightening. Looking to take it to the next level? Considering wrinkle treatment options such as Botox or dermal fillers may be another option (after you’re done breastfeeding). Sculptra treatments can help alleviate lost volume. Get a fresh, glowing-from-within look with skin beading, which includes injecting hyaluronic acid under the skin to reach its highest level of hydration while reducing pore size and scarring. Your morning routine may be limited these days, so semi-permanent makeup options will make your mornings a breeze, all while instantly helping you feel more put-together. Ranging from microblading to eyeliner and lip shading, there’s an option for everyone. 20

EASY, BREEZY ’DO Last, but not least, let’s not forget the power of a hot new ’do. A fresh hairstyle is an effective tool for boosting your confidence while also helping you get out of the house in the morning! Many women notice postpartum hair loss—it’s a thing, and the impacts vary. While it may seem challenging, there are ways to help support your hair through this time. Opting for a shorter chop —think the ever-so-stylish, low-maintenance lob (or long bob) —can make hair look more voluminous and conceal wispy, curly hairs. Resist the urge to add bangs or layers if your hair is noticeably thinning. “Adding layers will only make your hair feel thinner because layering is essentially removing weight. Keeping a strong perimeter will help keep fullness when going through the “big shed,” says hairstylist Jess Duardo at Salon Lofts in Cherry Creek. Motherhood changes everything—including how you see yourself. Whether you choose to embrace every mark as part of your story or explore ways to reclaim your confidence, remember that this chapter is about finding balance, not perfection. Give your body time, treat yourself kindly, and when you’re ready, lean into the things that make you feel like you again. You’ve done the hard part. Now it’s your turn to shine.

IMPRESSIONS Gifting fine jewelry that speaks from the heart By Kristen West THE RIGHT PIECE OF JEWELRY has a way of capturing more than light—it holds memory, emotion and meaning. From a diamond that catches the sun to a bracelet that becomes part of someone’s everyday ritual, fine jewelry is as much about connection as it is craftsmanship, making it a deeply meaningful gift option. When it comes to choosing a luxury jewelry item for that special someone, it helps to connect with jewelers who can walk you through that sometimes-overwhelming selection process. Here we feature two Colorado jewelers who have built their names on that balance—the artistry of design and the intimacy of personal significance.
TRICE JEWELERS After nearly six decades in Colorado, Trice Jewelers has become woven into the fabric of local celebrations like engagements, anniversaries and milestones that mark the passage of time. The family-owned business has earned its reputation not only for its selection of luxury brands but also for the way it approaches each piece as part of someone’s story. Just as meaningful is the jeweler’s community focus, Trice has long supported local partnerships and charities, extending its sense of connection beyond the showroom. Behind the scenes, Trice houses Colorado’s largest full-service custom design studio, where skilled craftspeople sketch, sculpt and set each detail by hand. That in-house process gives their jewelry a certain integrity and personal feel, with pieces imagined and finished under one roof. TRICE JEWELERS

The company emphasizes natural gemstones chosen for their origin and beauty rather than artificial enhancements. Each piece is crafted to endure in both design and meaning. A team of certified gemologists, registered jewelers and master watchmakers bring passion and experience to their craft, ensuring every clasp, cut and curve feels intentional. The company also has longstanding relationships with partners, ethical suppliers and world-class designers to ensure that quality and integrity are at the heart of their work. Personal jewelers help clients find the right piece and often become part of their milestones, quietly connecting expertise with empathy. GATHER IN STYLE Warm tones, natural textures and inviting silhouettes bring people back to the dining room ENTERTAINING IS ABOUT CONNECTION, and this year’s dining trends are all about creating spaces that encourage guests to sit, talk and linger. A return to warm, rich colors and darker woods defines the season, along with transitional looks that balance modern simplicity and classic comfort, according to the pros at Howard Lorton Furniture. Dining rooms continue to serve as the heart of the home—a place to gather and celebrate. Comfortable seating plays a big role in that, with upholstered chairs that invite long, relaxed meals. Decorative, colorful armchairs at the head of the table paired with matching armless side chairs create a layered and polished look. “We’re seeing more curved dining chairs for formal dining, and benches for families in less formal dining settings,” says Margot Cook, Howard Lorton’s vice president of operations.
Low-back chairs also remain a favorite for those who prefer a sleek, minimal aesthetic. Nature-inspired design continues to influence interiors across Colorado. Mountain modern style takes cues from our serene surroundings— rich wood grains, deep greens and natural materials like linen and stone. Accessories such as linen table runners, floral arrangements and greenery add organic texture, while subtle splashes of color or metallic gold details keep the look fresh and sophisticated. Lighting plays a key role in setting the mood. Instead of traditional candles, tabletop lamps are emerging as a stylish, functional alternative. Rechargeable table lamps add light and ambiance directly to the table, creating a warm glow that enhances both conversation and cuisine.
San Lorenzo Dining Table, MSRP $5,975, HOWARD LORTON’S every day price $3,885.

For formal settings, wallpaper and bold patterns are making a comeback. Statement walls and textured finishes bring character to the dining room without overwhelming it, allowing furniture to remain the focal point. The San Lorenzo Dining Table is a perfect example of form meeting function. With two leaves, it easily expands to seat up to ten, making it ideal for large gatherings. Its dark finish and transitional design complement a wide range of interiors—from modern to traditional. For smaller or more intimate gatherings, round tables continue to be a popular choice for their cozy, conversational feel. This year’s trends blend comfort and sophistication, with an emphasis on personal touches and inviting textures.

Designing a kitchen made for entertaining By Heather Shoning Photos by Murphy Foto Imagery FOR MANY HOMEOWNERS, the kitchen isn’t just where meals are made—it’s where life happens. For interior designer and project manager Tamar Chang with Thurston Kitchen + Bath, creating a space that balances daily functionality with seamless entertaining was the guiding principle behind this Evergreen-area kitchen. “These homeowners run a spice company, so their kitchen is the center of their home life, work life and social life,” Chang says. “They host business gatherings, family get-togethers and everything in between. We wanted to design a space that could transition effortlessly between all of those.” That vision led to a total reconfiguration. The former kitchen became a beverage station—complete with a coffee bar on one side and a wine fridge on the other—while the old dining room was opened up to house the new kitchen. The result: a connected, fluid layout that lets guests mingle over drinks without crowding the cook. A large quartz-topped island anchors the space, offering plenty of prep surface while keeping seating out of busy walkways. “The island faces the great room, so people can hang out and chat while the homeowners are cooking,” Chang explains. She put the refrigerator is at the end of the kitchen so anyone could grab a drink or snack without getting into the kitchen workspace. Durability was a must for a family that works with colorful, stain-prone spices. “Quartz countertops were key,” Chang

says. “They’re beautiful and completely low-maintenance— you can spill anything, wipe it up and it’s fine.” High-end Wolf appliances complete the professional-grade setup, while clever storage keeps everything organized. “We thought a lot about where things go and how they’re used,” Chang says. “Spices are tucked away to the left of the range, utensils on the right. It’s about ergonomics and ease— having everything you need right where you are, but keeping the counters clean.” The kitchen’s visual calm comes from its light, airy palette and strategic use of closed cabinetry. “This family has two young kids—plastic dishes don’t need to be on display,” she says with a laugh. “Most of the upper storage is hidden so it’s never cluttered, and the
white cabinets let the wood hood stand out while keeping the whole space bright and welcoming.” The result is a kitchen that’s equally suited to morning coffee, cocktail hour and a crowd around the island. As Chang puts it, “Kitchens aren’t closed off anymore. They’re the heart of the home—where you live, cook and entertain. The key is giving everything a place, so you can enjoy the openness without the mess.” THURSTON KITCHEN + BATH

WHEN THE FIRST SNOW blankets the Rockies and the chairlifts begin their steady hum, two of Colorado’s most familiar ski towns—Vail and Breckenridge—are readying something more than just another winter season. This year, they’re blending their storied skiing roots with a fresh surge of style, design and culinary ambition. Off the slopes, the experience is getting a new polish; on them, the spirit of camaraderie remains intact—as Vail Resorts leans into the social side of skiing with a new offer that lets Epic Pass holders invite a friend to ski for half price.
quite like Vail, and this year, the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail is at the heart of the excitement. The highlight is Tavernetta Vail, a collaboration with the James Beard Award–winning Frasca Hospitality Group. The menu celebrates the spirit of Italy’s alpine regions, with dishes such as linguini with Maine lobster or New York strip with Marsala truffle sauce. During Après-Tivo (Tavernetta’s spirited take on après ski), guests can “buzz for spritz” at the restaurant’s playful Spritz Window—a nod to the wine windows of Tuscany and Northern Italy.

experience from start to finish: the seasonal Haute Chocolate Ceremony. The treatment combines exfoliation with cacao and spice, a rain shower rinse and an application of a nutrient-rich botanical elixir, followed by a cooling facial massage, scalp treatment and restorative massage—all concluding fireside with a cup of The Remedy’s viral hot chocolate. Another accommodation worth exploring is the Grand Hyatt Vail, a luxury ski-in/ ski-out resort located along Gore Creek in Vail’s Cascade Village, offering direct access to the mountain via Chair 20. The property features stylish, alpine-inspired rooms and suites with mountain or creek views, a heated

infinity-edge pool, two hot tubs and a full-service spa. A complimentary shuttle connects the resort to Vail and Lionshead villages for easy access to shopping, dining and nightlife. Once the skis are stowed and the mountain glow sets in, the best way to end the day is with an unforgettable meal—and in Vail, that means Sweet Basil. The Michelinrecommended fine-dining spot is tucked in the heart of Vail Village. Expect dishes that surprise and delight—perhaps tempura-fried mahi mahi tacos with a punchy peanut salsa or a rich miso black garlic-glazed halibut—all paired with balanced cocktails or a glass from their standout wine list.

BRECKENRIDGE: BOUTIQUE COMFORT WITH A TWIST A little closer to Denver, Breckenridge continues its evolution from laid-back ski town to polished mountain escape. Its historic charm remains intact, but a wave of boutique properties and new dining experiences is adding depth and sophistication to Main Street. At the center of it all is The Carlin, Breckenridge’s “restaurant-with-rooms.” The property blends old-world elegance with contemporary mountain style—bright bay windows, private balconies and thoughtful details like Topo daypacks, Pendleton dog beds and plush robes welcome guests in from the cold. Below the suites, Tavern Underground offers a hidden speakeasy-style refuge for craft cocktails and elevated tavern fare, perfect for après ski or a late-night gathering among friends. Just down the street, the new Hotel
Alpenrock—a Curio Collection by Hilton property—brings a fresh, family-friendly spin on alpine sophistication. Opened last spring and preparing for its first full winter season, the 205-room property is conveniently situated between Peak 9 and Main Street. Be sure to visit The Canary, a moody speakeasy tucked behind a secret door. The hotel’s family-focused amenities—like the whimsical “Magical Moose Hotline,” for children’s bedtime stories—add warmth to its modern design, proving that high-end hospitality doesn’t have to be stuffy. Then there’s the Gravity Haus Breckenridge—a lifestyle stay that fuses minimalist design with holistic wellness: Japanese-style onsen baths, group fitness and curated local adventures. It’s aimed at the modern mountain traveler for whom sustainability and style go hand in hand. Best of all, there’s also a location in Vail
for those who want Gravity Haus to be their homebase for both destinations. Breckenridge’s dining scene will reach new heights with Forage, a fine-dining restaurant opening in December. Led by chef Ryan Cook, the concept offers a 12-course, story-driven tasting menu inspired by Colorado’s art, history and nature. Guests can expect inventive touches—like cracking open a hand-crafted ice sphere to reveal a historically inspired cocktail. With more than 17 years of global experience, Cook aims to bring Breckenridge its first Michelin star—and he’s saving wall space for it. From the cosmopolitan sophistication of Vail to Breckenridge’s intimate mountain charm, Colorado’s ski towns are redefining luxury for a new generation. Whether you come for the slopes or the spritz, the message is clear: This winter, indulgence lives in the high country. PHOTOS: COURTESY BRECKENRIDGE TOURISM OFFICE

Road Warriors THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN VINTAGE RALLY challenged teams at every turn By Kim D. McHugh Photos Courtesy Rocky Mountain Vintage Rally ENGINES ROARED to life under Colorado’s boundless blue sky, vintage car silhouettes glinting in the morning sun as drivers prepared to tackle mountain passes, backroads and more than 1,000 miles of pure adventure. This wasn’t your average mountain cruise—it was the inaugural Rocky Mountain Vintage Rally, where classic machinery met modern grit and the open road became both rival and reward. From roaring through red-rock canyons to winding up alpine switchbacks, this new endurance rally turned Colorado’s scenic byways into a living museum of motoring history—equal parts competition, camaraderie and jaw-dropping beauty. Endurance races and off-road rallies enjoy a history dating back to 1907, when the Peking to Paris race debuted, testing drivers’ skills over 9,300 miles. Since 1923, France has hosted the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world’s foremost endurance road race, and perhaps the most storied off-road adventure is the Dakar Rally. Launched in 1979, the race led drivers on a punishing 6,200-mile route from Paris to Dakar in West Africa. 56

Last September, the Pioneer Rally Company introduced its high-adrenaline concept to Colorado. The four-day event challenged entrants to travel from Colorado Springs to Pagosa Springs, Palisade, Winter Park and back. Testing the skills, strategic thinking and determination of drivers and navigators, the route showcased the southern Rockies, the San Luis Valley, parts of the Western Slope, wine country and charming small towns. “It seemed logical to organize the first rally in probably the most spectacular scenery North America has to offer,” says Jamie Turner, who co-founded the company with Taylor Still. He notes that the accessibility to the mountains and the vast road network made it by far the most exciting and practical location for Pioneer’s maiden event. The process started with the team formulating routes using old-fashioned maps, Google Earth, and other programs, then they drove the route to assess the quality of the roads and how visually interesting it was. They also had to get permission to take these vintage vehicles through private land and off the beaten track for a more exclusive adventure. After a pre-rally technical inspection of their vehicles, each two-person team executed daily stages featuring timed test sections with a focus on speed, and time-speed-distance sections, where maintaining precise timing was key. Eligible vehicles were defined by categories, including vintage, which consisted of models from pre-World War II through December 31, 1945. Other categories included classic, special
vehicles and a Pioneer class for non-competitive entrants or those without an older vehicle. Among the 18 vehicles entered was a 1970 Volvo 122. Nicknamed “Olga,” it was driven by first-time rally participants and out-of-staters, Thomas Searls and Carl Helmetag, a team that won its class and finished fifth overall, a significant achievement considering that only nine of the starting cars completed the rally. “It really was the most exciting, fun experience in racing I’ve ever done,” Searls says. 58
December 2025 // AvidLifestyle
“It challenged me on every level. I mean, the adrenaline was just surging. I would do it again in a heartbeat.” He says he saw parts of the state he’d never seen before, and the aesthetic beauty of Colorado was overwhelming. Even racing past. Another rally team included Matt Bryson, from Sydney, Australia, and Danny Day, a native of Washington’s Yakima Valley. The veteran rally enthusiasts have participated in major international events such as the Peking to Paris
SOCIETY & CULTURE
and Rally of the Incas in Peru. In the Colorado rally, Bryson served as the navigator for Day, who was behind the wheel of a 1975 Pontiac Trans Am. “It was a very well-run event, which we won, and we’re quite proud of that. I think that the rally organization absolutely nailed the route. It was just stunning,” Bryson says. “If you’ve got a sense of adventure, an interest in driving a vintage car, and being with like-minded people, you should do it.”
While navigating roads was the primary focus, the teams found delight at their nightly accommodations, which included The Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs, The Springs Resort & Spa in Pagosa Springs, Wine Country Inn in Palisades, and The Vintage Hotel in Winter Park. Hearty breakfasts, scrumptious dinners and newfound camaraderie on this adventurous road trip left an indelible impression. By the time the last team rolled—or pushed— across the finish line, every mile told a story of grit, grace and the intoxicating freedom that only comes from chasing the horizon. For the pioneers of the Rocky Mountain Vintage Rally, this was more than a drive—it was a declaration that adventure is alive and well, waiting just beyond the next mountain pass.

Experienced rally drivers, Shiv Sikland and Dean Drako, drove a 1969 Peugeot 504. The duo are partners in Drako Motors in Silicon Valley, California, which counts quad-motor electric hypercars among its innovations. “In terms of this rally, our familiarity driving in South America prepared us to re-jet the carburetors for optimal performance at Colorado’s high altitudes, where the air is thinner, particularly at Winter Park, where it’s around nine thousand feet,” Sikland explained. He went on to say that a key motivation for his participation was to support the event organizers in their mission to establish a rally movement in America.
