LIFE OF THE PARTY The leaves are changing, and so are our social calendars. TO THE UNTRAINED EYE, fall in Colorado can seem like a big cliché. At first glance, too many people proclaim fall to be their favorite season for such an opinion to feel sincere. And too many photos of our aspen-filled forests circulate for those perfect-moment-in-time snapshots to feel extraordinary. To those outsiders, I say come on up to the mountains with us. And, after we spend hours in the car circling national parks to find that color-laden aspen tree grove, try not to feel awestruck as you stare at an entire wooded area transformed by magnificent, limited-edition shades. Then, don’t avow that the photo you just captured of the area (somehow remiss of even one of the myriad of leaf peepers on the trail) is worth a large sum of money. I also invite the naysayers to dig deeper—there is more substance to this season. Simply consider our proclivity for throwing life-changing parties. In the fall, much of the country likes to see life slow down. We prefer to speed up—to fill our calendars with lavish galas and fundraisers that will, one, make a meaningful change in the world around us and, two, create a reason to habiller in breathtaking evening gowns and apposite accoutrements. For the latter, you, like us, will already know what to shop for, thanks to the stunning formalwear—for both you and your date—on pg. 28. When you both need something cozy, turn to pg. 40, where we offer a sophisticated take on weekend sweaters and other layers. Those layers, coincidentally, pair well with the brewing tips from a local gourmet coffee shop on pg. 18 and the trip up to Granby’s C Lazy U Ranch on pg. 64.

WHY YOU SHOULD PUT

YOURSELF FIRST If you’re familiar with the phrase “you can’t pour from an empty cup” then you understand the reasoning behind caring for yourself first — you have to be whole to be helpful. These days, people are busier than ever, and when you have a spouse, relatives, coworkers, friends and children in the mix, your responsibilities to others can make you feel pulled in many directions. And while it may seem like giving everything you have to everyone around you is the answer to keeping those in your life happy, it’s actually the opposite that can truly fill everybody up — investing in yourself first.

RST

Next month at Fitness Together, we’re focused on finding the “Strength to Succeed” in life, and that means giving yourself all the tools you need to feel good, including proper self-care. We’re of the mindset that a well-cared for human being who is healthy and feels good in their own skin is only in the right position to serve others when they are the very best version of themselves. How do you do it? Focus on treating yourself kindly and being as healthy as you can through the following three ways…

MAKE TIME FOR FITNESS, AND INVEST IN YOUR WORKOUTS. Working out is not selfish. It’s anything but. When you improve your health, mobility, energy and overall fitness through regular workouts, you are better able to show up for the people in your life — and you just plain feel stronger and more confident. A fit and functioning person who can tackle what life brings is much preferable to a tired and sedentary person who isn’t ever up for a challenge. If you want to be able to play with your grandchildren, take a bike ride with your friend or join a recreational softball league with your coworkers, you need to make sure your body is able and strong through participating in a regular exercise routine. Everyone around you benefits when you are your strongest and fittest self.

I’M

S PAN

CHOOSE HEALTHY FOOD, AND INVEST IN HIGH-QUALITY NUTRITION. Grabbing fast food in the car on the way to work is not doing you or anyone around you any favors. When you don’t eat properly, your energy level and mood are bound to suffer — and that’s likely going to be apparent to those around you too. Instead, fueling up on whole foods, healthy fats, fruits, veggies, complex carbs and lean proteins can make you feel great. It’s a worthy investment to grocery shop for the right foods, prepare them at home and eat when you’re hungry. When you’ve given your body the right amount of calories from the best kind of food you can get your hands on, you’ll be glowing, energized and well positioned to be there for others in your life. And you may even inspire others to eat healthier food too.

PRIORITIZE YOUR WELL-BEING, AND INVEST IN YOUR SELF-CARE. While we understand that it’s not always possible to get a massage, meditate, take a bubble bath and make perfect healthy choices every single day, we do know that every little bit helps. That’s why you should make it a point to schedule time regularly to do something that recharges you. In fact, if you give yourself at least five minutes a day to either enjoy peace and quiet via a morning meditation or devotional, to hitting the gym, cooking a delicious meal, seeing an acupuncturist, going on a nature walk or applying your favorite face mask, you are telling yourself that you are worth it — and that means a lot. People who spend time caring for themselves properly are said to be happier, more confident, more energetic and overall stronger people, who tend to share that positivity with those around them too — ultimately benefiting everyone.

STRENGTH TO PUTS YOU FIRSTN ND NEVER REGRETS IT Remember, you are the only person who has to live with you and your choices every single minute of every single day, so never underestimate the power of caring for yourself in the right way. And if you do, you will definitely have the strength to succeed!

THE REST IS HISTORY

OLD SCHOOL, NEW SCHOOL The Curtis Center for the Arts has housed two hubs for thought within the last century. By Gal Barak

Mrs. Maude A. Hultz, 1940s Curtis School teacher

IN 1914, a little red schoolhouse was erected in the Greenwood Village area.

running water or indoor plumbing. Two outhouses stood on the property.

The Curtis School, now known as the oldest public building in the city of Greenwood Village, was built from brick and white-paned windows; a brass cupola and bell cherry the top. The only sources of light were windows and gasoline lanterns—there was no electricity,

The education center was named after Mary J. Curtis, who donated and designated the school’s original one-acre plot of land as a schoolground for her own and neighboring children’s education. The schoolhouse held a student body of 27 children ages 7 to 16, all taught in the same classroom in the first years. As time went on, classes changed and so did the Curtis School. It expanded—new classrooms were built, new teachers were hired, new amenities like a small kitchen were added—until, unable to keep up with modern demands, it merged with a larger area school and celebrated its last graduating class in 1967.

Curtis School class photo

It’s been almost 30 years since the building was renovated (starting with a move to its current lot next to Curtis Park) and re-opened as the Curtis Center for the Arts, which we find ourselves visiting often these days between the art 15

WHAT TO ORDER

OPTIONS, for both the time it takes to eat and the actual nosh you’re enjoying—that’s what Urban Market @6350 is serving. The bright and airy workday-friendly food collective holds five globally inspired food concepts, plus a fresh-produce-forward Community Garden, that create a formidable breakfast and lunch alternative to formal sit-down restaurants and pedestrian fast-food spots. The fare will take your taste buds on an intentional culinary journey: Urban Market is dedicated to sourcing produce, meats and dairy products from family farms located within 100 miles of the metro area. PHOTOS: ALEX GRADISHER

WHEN YOU’LL EAT Wait times can vary from five minutes to fifteen minutes, depending on how busy each concept is and the line lengths at ordering kiosks. The quickest option is to head directly to the Community Garden—the collective’s centerpiece hotand-cold food station—and serve yourself from among a splay of fresh greens, vegetables, deli meats, fruit, cheeses, breads with infused olive oils, soups, fried chicken and a whole filet of smoked salmon. The longest lines tend to form at Flame and Pico Mesa, where the tacos, served on housemade tortillas, have a loyal following.

The Land of PLENTY

THOUGH LIMITED TO BREAKFAST AND LUNCH, the beauty of Urban Market is in its diverse concepts, starting with burgers from Flame and Mexican food from Pico Mesa. Take a tour of Italy at Fork and Flour, opt for Indian food at Masala by Marigold and, finally, be sure to see what’s on the menu at the pop-up restaurant, which changes weekly. Of the collection of permanent restaurants, our favorite is the Community Garden, most notably for its smoked salmon, cheese spread, fresh greens and other veggies and prepared salads. The hand-formed burgers from Flame, their buns branded with the Flame logo, are large and fresh. Get a side of hand-cut fries ($2.59); they’re crisp, golden and delicious. We’re also fans of the Tacos al Pastor from Pico Mesa ($9.99). The pork, shaved from a rotating spit crested with pineapple, lays in scratch-made tortillas and is topped with pineapple wedges, pickled onions and wisps of cilantro. The Lamb Ragon Josh ($9.99)—a mildly spiced lamb curry from Masala by Marigold—is worth the pilgrimage, too.

SERVICE Rather than pay at a counter, the collective is strewn with several self-service digital kiosks that make ordering and paying for breakfast or lunch easy. Additionally, you can sign up for text messages that alert you when your order is ready. If you need assistance, flag down one of the collective’s ambassadors, all of whom are clad in gray aprons. PARKING Parking is free for two hours all along South Fiddler’s Green Circle, which fronts Urban Market. You might have to circle around once or twice to snag a spot.

Brew-tiful

TIME FOR THE AT-HOME CUP OF CLASSIC BLACK COFFEE TO BECOME AN ARTISANAL, richly flavored brew. These simple steps from Josiah Rothlisberger (pictured below), the director of education at MONK AND MONGOOSE GOURMET COFFEE in Lone Tree and Greenwood Village, will elevate the morning ritual. Excuse us, we’re suddenly in the mood for another cup. By Ali Longwell BUY FRESH BEANS The biggest mistake homebrewers make is selecting bad beans. “There is absolutely no amount of brewing equipment that can make a good cup of coffee out of bad coffee beans,” says Rothlisberger. Buy whole beans—from a boutique grocery store or even Whole Foods—that have been freshly roasted. The best way to determine freshness is by the roast date. Rothlisberger doesn’t buy coffee beans that were roasted more than two weeks prior to his shopping date; anything more than a month old is no longer fresh. GET TO GRINDING Grinding beans enhances the flavor and experience. There are two types of grinders, a blade grinder and a burr grinder. “Burr grinders are the way to go,” Rothlisberger says. The serrated plates (called burrs) are precise, more consistent and will extract the most flavor. Rothlisberger’s pick: the Baratza Encore burr grinder. baratza.com THINK ABOUT YOUR WATER Rothlisberger’s rule of thumb when it comes to H2O: “If you don’t like the flavor of your tap water, you’re probably not going to like the flavor of that water in your coffee.” A basic water purifier can help make a cleaner cup of joe. Heating your water to an ideal temperature, too, will get the best flavor. “The optimal temperature is 200 degrees Fahrenheit,” he says. Rothlisberger’s pick: the Brewista Smart Pour Variable Temperature Gooseneck Kettle, which automatically heats water to a manually selected temperature. mybrewista.com EXPERIMENT WITH POUR-OVERS “There are all kinds of neat pour-over methods and equipment to try,” says Rothlisberger. Each emphasize specific flavors in your grounds. To bring out volatile, acidic notes, try a French press. For no acidic notes, try an AeroPress. For something even lighter, use a Chemex coffee maker. For a bold brew with more body, the Hario V60 ceramic coffee dripper (size 02) should be your go-to. PHOTOS: CHAD CHISHOLM, CUSTOM CREATIONS

Regardless of method, there are four components to master in pour-overs to yield the most flavor: 1. grind quality; 2. water temperature; 3. the water to coffee ratio; and 4. the amount of time you’re brewing—too much and your coffee will be bitter, too little and it will be acidic and sour. Rothlisberger’s pick: The Brewtime app (available on Apple and Android) will tell you the right “recipe” and ratio for each method. brewtimeapp.com INVEST IN A SCALE A scale for weighing beans is essential because it helps control your ratio, says Rothlisberger: “I prefer 1 gram of water to 17 ½ grams of coffee, which is a safe general ratio.” Rothlisberger’s picks: the Brewista Smart Scale (mybrewista.com) and the Hario V60 Drip Scale (hario.jp), which Rothlisberger has on his own kitchen counter. 19

IT’S MESMERIZING. When witnessing a “performance” on a Steinway and Sons Spirio grand piano, it sounds as though some of the greatest pianists, spanning different eras, are playing live—though they definitely are not. The piano bench is empty. And yet, the keys enact compositions by the great Russian Sergei Rachmaninoff and classical interpretations in the style of virtuoso pianist Glenn Gould. You can even jazz things up with some George Gershwin or Duke Ellington. This is the player piano of the 21st century, and we are home to the only Colorado store that sells it: Englewood’s Schmitt Music.

With the help of “proprietary audio translation software,” the Spirio can play, at high resolution, more than 1,700 songs with a touch of the piano’s accompanying iPad. The musical library is housed on an app and ranges in artists from Bach to Billy Joel (the “Piano Man” himself) and 21

is said to duplicate live concerts with uncanny accuracy. “The experience you get is the real deal,” says Barry Damerell, a piano specialist at the Englewood store. “Just seeing people’s reactions is great because almost everybody can find a favorite performer.” Only 2,500 Steinway pianos are crafted each year, with Spirio models filling roughly half of that amount. Many professional piano players actually buy the Spirio themselves. Performers and us non-performers can record ballads and ditties on the instrument at home. While the Spirio Classic is playback only, the Spirio R comes with recording capabilities. Overall, new pieces recorded in the Steinway studio are added to the app monthly; musicians want to record on the Spirio because it helps them stand the test of time, Damerell says. Unlimited access to prodigious living room concerts? We like the sound of that.

Leading With Light THE FOCUS OF THIS LANDMARK REDESIGN: ILLUME AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

A mirror hung on the wall, positioned to reflect the mountains in the distance, enriches the LIVING ROOM. Overall, artwork was kept to a minimum. But Lee did add one conversation-worthy piece in this central location: bronzed men, on ropes, climbing skyward. “I wanted to use them for their verticality and to honor the height of the 12-foot ceiling,” she says.

By Lori Midson LET THERE BE LIGHT! That was the mantra of Greenwood Village residents Ann and her husband, Greg, when they took up residence in a 1,700-square-foot, one-story luxury penthouse in the East Tower at The Landmark last year. “We knew from looking at the floor plan that lighting was critical to making the condo feel bright; only one side of the space delivered natural sunlight,” recalls Ann. To guide the couple through the dark abyss, Ann turned to Lin Lee of Lin Lee and Associates Interior Design, a friend for 17 years and a lauded Castle Pines-based designer. And Lee saw major potential: “There were wonderfully high ceilings, gorgeous mountain views and a dedicated laundry room, which is very unusual for a small space like this. The configurations of

the rooms also worked well.” The floor plan was open, but the rooms still provided the homeowners with privacy. The challenge: Lee had just six weeks—while the couple was traveling abroad—to complete the transformation. Her project road map concentrated on incorporating energy-saving LED lights wherever possible. Light, Lee maintains, is 22

The STUDY, nicknamed Greg’s “Man Cave,” is all about subtle masculinity. Lee added a 12-foot, charcoal-finished wall unit with a desk to make the room both a functional office and—with a customized metal coffee table, wool plaid carpet and mustard pillows trimmed with brass beads—a comfortable lounge area.

everything. “Properly designed and used, every element in a room is enhanced by light, and this redesign really showcases that because it was such a dark tunnel to start with,” she says. The glow up began in the kitchen, where Lee replaced ordinary recessed bulbs with sleek, Vermont-made Hubbardton Forge pendants that brighten the kitchen counter. She also installed under-cabinet LED lighting and

// home tour resurfaced the floors (also dark) with a soft, gray-washed wood. “Our other main goal was to incorporate a softly modern vibe in every room,” notes Lee. To that end, she deliberately chose fabrics and furnishings in light hues. Items flow from a dyed, gray hairon-hide rug that enhances the living room floor to luxurious Nobilis gold-and-white embroidered throw pillows to a wavy bench upholstered in exquisite white leather. Custom-quilted, natural charcoal Home Treasures sheets and a coverlet, woven on Egyptian cotton, now lay on the bed in the master bedroom. Metallic living room curtains that glimmer in the shadow of the sun “became an unexpected focal point,” says Ann. “Especially when the evening sunlight shines through.” While Lee had a limited timeframe to pull the penthouse together and was largely left to her own devices given the couple’s absence, Ann and Greg, who recently moved away from the metro area, couldn’t have been happier. “Lee’s approach balanced the lighting and helped the eye focus on key accessories and furniture,” Ann says. For the lucky new owner of the penthouse, the future is bright with light.

The MASTER BEDROOM features a drum light and a 16-foot padded headboard top-lit with LED ribbon lights. “It’s peaceful and mood-enhancing,” says Lee. The MASTER BATHROOM is the only room bereft of LED bulbs. Instead, Lee installed ceiling-suspended pendants with eye-level lighting. “It’s so much more flattering to see yourself at eye level—there are no shadows coming down on your face,” the designer says.

Garden Party THIS GARDENING GROUP KNOWS HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF COLORADO’S 300 DAYS OF SUNSHINE. By Kelly Smith IF THE PRUNING SHEARS, trowels and other flower-focused tools of the Village Castle Pines Garden Club could talk, they would make gardening advice columns obsolete. Founded in 1994, the club has more than 150 members who are more than horticultural hobbyists; they are the area’s favorite flora experts, thanks to year-round, members-only educational, social and landscaping events.

Castle Pines Serenity Garden

In the fall—starting with a luncheon at the Country Club at Castle Pines this month that welcomes new members and announces the season’s class schedule—that means members sharpen their skills with sage advice in monthly classes on fire mitigation, flower arranging, putting the garden to bed for winter, handling roses and more.

UP NORTH The group explored The Butchart Gardens during this year’s trip to British Columbia.

WEED IT AND REAP Village Castle Pines Garden Club vcpgc.org

The guild also travels—on group trips to gardencentric destinations. They explored Charleston, S.C. in 2018 and recently returned from a lush garden tour in Victoria, British Columbia. And for the philanthropic, a charitable committee coordinates support for two nonprofits, the Crisis Center (thecrisiscenter.org) and the Douglas/Elbert Task Force Help and Hope Center (helpandhopecenter.org). How does one actually join? Those both inside and outside of the Castle Pines community

As president, Wright’s favorite aspect of the club is planning the activities and events: “There is always something to look forward to.” That’s just how we feel about our perennials.

The seminars keep up through April, when the group begins to tend to blossoms in the Castle Pines Serenity Garden, a xeriscape display on Village Lake, and in the Cherokee Ranch and Castle’s Tweet Kimball Memorial Garden.

(some members even live out-ofstate) can sign up through the club website (vcpgc.org) anytime. Be sure to prepare for a happy, hearty welcome: “We don’t turn anyone down,” says club president Janice Wright, who moved to Castle Pines six years ago and credits the bunch for helping her acclimate to the area. “The club is very inclusive,” she says. “People have different interests; some like to garden, some like the parties and the social aspect and some like the trips. There is a variety of people, personalities and gardening levels.”

GALA STYLE TIPS from our stylist Denver-based JENECE AMELLA has been a wardrobe, hair and makeup expert for more than 20 years. She has worked across the world—from New York to London to Portugal to Chile—and has styled the likes of Lindsey Vonn, Mikaela Shiffrin, Amy Purdy, Missy Franklin and Von Miller. Here, her advice on women’s silhouette trends, jewelry to pair with them and more. INTERESTED IN TRYING TRENDS? “Be daring and go against the norm. Glamorous, formal just-above-the-knee cocktail dresses and menswearinspired pantsuits are big right now.” DON’T SACRIFICE COMFORT “Comfort and a good fit should always take precedence. If you are busty, try a V-neck. Great arms and shoulders should be seen with an off-theshoulder, strapless, spaghettistrap or halter neckline.” KEEP ACCESSORIES SOPHISTICATED “You want to have jewelry that compliments, rather than competes with, your outfit. Add a glitzy statement piece to a simple gown, dress or pantsuit; complement a beaded, studded or sequined outfit with something understated like pearls.” NOW, ON TO HAIR AND MAKEUP “A relaxed updo or a low chignon with some loose hairs around the face works well with any silhouette. If you’re wanting to wear your hair down, choose an outfit that exposes your arms and shoulders. When applying makeup, make one area of your face the focus. A smoky eye goes best with a neutral cheek and lip; bright lips can be balanced by a dramatic cat eye.” Styles by Jenece stylesbyjenece.com

Now, for Something Different GAYLE NOVAK IS A PHILANTHROPIST, RESTAURATEUR AND— TITLES THAT SURPRISE EVEN HER—2018’S MS. COLORADO SENIOR AMERICA AND MS. SENIOR AMERICA. By Nate Day 57

september 2019 // AvidLifestyle

INFLUENCERS

// in the spotlight

GAYLE NOVAK was looking to try something new. The restaurateur and philanthropist of more than 25 years could put together a charity event with her eyes closed. In 2018, she was looking for a challenge—Novak’s restaurant, Zane’s Italian Bistro in the Denver Tech Center, was being run by her son and she suddenly found herself with more free time. Better yet, she wanted to find something that harkened back to her childhood love of performing. She Googled “things to do for women over 60” and the Ms. Colorado Senior America pageant popped up, which she quickly dismissed. But within two days after the search, two previous pageant queens visited Zane’s Italian Bistro and convinced her to join the throng.

Winning gave Novak something special: sisterhood. “I didn’t have any sisters growing up,” she says. “Now it feels like I have a wonderful group of them to rely on.” The pageant, Novak can attest, is more than just a tight-knit community. The Senior America, Inc. nonprofit focuses on doing good, and celebrates women who use their pull to impact their surroundings. “The crown has given me more confidence in that,” says Novak. “People want to meet you when you have this title.” In years past, she’s worked with several statelevel and national charities, such as Volunteers of America, and has partnered with the likes

“The pageant really helped to build my confidence, particularly my confidence in singing. I never really sang in front of a big audience before the pageant; it was a little daunting.” of Frankie Valli, Wynonna Judd and Donny Osmond. Among the charities Novak works with today is Bessie’s Hope, which pairs seniors with at-risk teens in a mentorship program. She also often speaks at school assemblies. “I’ll ask who wants to do something that they’re afraid of doing, and there’s always a kid in the back that raises their hand,” says Novak. “I tell them to get out and do it.” The Englewood resident follows her own advice in the restaurant business. Years back, Novak set out to change the male-dominated industry by making her restaurant at the time, Summit Steakhouse, 100 percent female-run. 58

Novak’s background in philanthropy and feminism (more on that later) helped her to clinch the Colorado crown—and to move on to become Ms. Senior America 2018. We hear her overall-clad performance of “Money, Money, Money” from Mamma Mia! helped a bit, too.

A message she hopes to share with women in her age group is that, sometimes, only you are the catalyst to change. “Being over the age of 60, you’ve gone through so much—bad economies, good economies, teenagers that were a pain in the neck,” says Novak. “I wish I had known then that things don’t always change [on their own].” If Novak has learned one thing from her years as a mother, grandmother, philanthropist, restaurateur and now pageant queen, it’s that anyone—but especially women over 60—can “get up, get out and reinvent themselves.”

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT PANCREATIC CANCER “The thing that’s so scary about pancreatic cancer is that it can happen to anyone and it looks like so many other ailments, such as a hiatal hernia or an ulcer,” Shul says. “There’s no effective treatment, and obviously no cure. Our best defense at this point is to be very proactive.” The warning signs are few ... Pancreatic cancer usually exhibits symptoms that mimic those of other ailments. If you have unexplained weight loss, jaundice, nausea or vomiting, and those symptoms are not responding to treatment or are pervasive, check in with your doctor. ... So pay attention to your body. No one knows your body as well as you do. Be aware of what feels typical so you know when something isn’t right. “Don’t be afraid; speak up and be adamant. It could save your life,” Shul says. Any hesitation with the latter can be deadly. “Sometimes you have to kick down the doors and scream at the doctors to get them to hear that there’s something wrong,” she says. “The sooner you get a diagnosis, the better your chances of survival are.”

SAVING THE WORLD has been on Maureen Shul’s to-do list since she was a young girl, moving from place to place. “My father was in the Marine Corps, so I can’t even tell you that I had a ‘home base’ really,” says Shul, who was born in Quantico, Va. “I lived all over, which means I met a lot of different types of people and saw a lot of different lifestyles.” Witnessing that kind of diversity had an impact on Shul: Right out of college, she was ready to realize her public service dreams. “I went straight to Washington, D.C.—I was going to save the world,” she remembers. “I had no job prospects whatsoever; I just started knocking on the doors of senators. Four out of five shut the door in my face, but the fifth actually had a position he needed to fill.” That led to more experiences with long-lasting effects, such as eventually sitting in on the Watergate hearings. But personal tragedy struck when her brother Brian Shul, an Air Force pilot, was shot down in Vietnam. “He survived, but that kind of shocking experience changes your whole perspective and outlook on life,” she says. It was then that her altruist heart longed to finally have a permanent address. After a brief time in New Mexico, she set her sights on the Denver metro area. She started a brokerage firm here in the ’90s and then discovered Castle Pines in 2000. Shul became so instrumental in turning Castle Pines into a bona fide city that locals asked her to be the town’s first mayor. “How many 62

people can say that they’ve been mayor?” she muses. “It was exciting and challenging, and it connected me with so many good people.” But during her first term, her other brother Victor—diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2005—became critically ill. She was by his side until he passed in 2009. A mere month later, her mother, Blanche Shul, already battling Alzheimer’s, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She passed away in just a few months. Shul struggled to find meaning in it all. In 2012, in honor of her mother and brother, Shul founded Wings of Hope for Pancreatic Cancer Research; a year later, it began funneling 100 percent of its dollars to the University of Colorado Cancer Center’s pancreatic cancer research and clinical trials. In 2017, the nonprofit awarded three $50,000 grants that helped to bring new, currently ongoing research projects to the center. Shul, who still has the brokerage firm and has called Castle Pines home for nearly two decades, managed to find time to sit on the Paddington Station Preschool board, too. She also leads a support group for Alzheimer’s caregivers, and testified before the Colorado General Assembly to expand Colorado Life Trak statewide to help locate missing people diagnosed with dementia. “I think that if you stay open to life, it will lead you to where it and you are supposed to go,” she says. That sounds like the catchphrase of a reallife superhero.

About TIME

A SOUTH SUBURBS FAMILY RETURNS TO THEIR FAVORITE VACATION SPOT AFTER ALMOST THREE DECADES. By Kendall Kostelic

THE KIDS’ PROGRAM WAS JUST AS POPULAR. “It’s great for kids ages 4 through 16; at 6, kids get on horses,” Dianne says. “I asked James, my now 12-year-old grandson, what he likes about the ranch and he said, ‘I feel so free!’ ”

FOR MOST OF US, the axiom some things only get better with age is best applied to vintage wine or a rare bottle of whiskey. For the Honig family, the saying best exemplifies one thing: their return trip to C Lazy U Ranch, which took place just shy of 30 years after their last great escape to the luxury property. “In 2017, my daughter Natalie was turning 40. Her husband asked her what she wanted, and her response was that she only wanted us all to go back to the C Lazy U,” says mom Dianne Honig. The family of five, which now spans the south suburbs and includes spouses and grandkids, made their first trips to C Lazy U in 1988 and 1989. In 2017, just like Natalie wanted, they went back to see if the place matched the memories. The verdict: “The return trip was just as good, if not better,” says Dianne. “Just go; it will be transformative.” And, this year, particularly festive. The ranch is celebrating a big birthday, too—100 years in business.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY C LAZY U! In honor of its centennial, C Lazy U has unveiled a $10 million renovation and special packages. Cheers to 100 years with the Bougie Bootlegger, a $100 Manhattan that features the ranch’s centennial spirit—an exclusive cask of Leopold Bros. Cask Select Four-Year straight bourbon.

THE ADULTS RETURNED TO MUCH-MISSED HOBBIES. “My favorite thing is the horseback riding. All of the adults in our family are intermediate riders and we were really able to utilize our skills on animals that were well-trained.” BRANDED COWBOY BOOTS MADE A HISTORIC APPEARANCE. “The ranch will brand your cowboy boots (and any other items you have). My husband still has his boots from 1988 and wore them on our 2017 and 2018 trips.” THE WHOLE FAMILY REVELED AT THE SHODEO. “At the Shodeo, which is like a rodeo, the kids can do this race that involves putting their face in a pie tin of whipped cream and finding a piece of bubble gum. I have a picture of my daughter Ashley, who is now 38, winning first prize at that race at 6 years old. Fast forward to today and Kenley, who is Ashley’s daughter, also won first prize. Now, we have pictures of them both.” THE WHOLE FAMILY ALSO REALLY RELAXED. “Every day we came to our cabins with blue jeans and cowboy boots, both dirty from riding, and would kick them off into a pile. The next morning, we would put those same blue jeans and boots right back on and go right back out.”
