MAKING MOVES Calling all fitness fiends!

I’M NO ATHLETE, but I do have a few fitness accolades worth mentioning. I’ve run a half-marathon (my first and only, so far) with a steady under-10-minute mile; I’ve sustained visible, contoured abs for weeks at a time; and I made it through a workout challenge that required me to get to the gym for 21 days straight without missing one session. In the grand scheme of things, you would think that these would be enough for this desk jockey. I, however, have caught fitness fever. To my husband’s chagrin, I’m more than willing to try a new routine that claims to push my physique like it’s never been pushed before (as a journalist, I live to test these “guarantees” after all). He would probably even tell you that the hobby has become excessive—while he shows you to a storage closet brimming with fitness DVDs and exercise equipment. It has, to be sure, been quite the journey finding techniques I like. But every sweaty step has been worth it. When it comes to getting fit, the workouts and body-shaping treatments in this issue (pg. 37) won’t disappoint. The staff and I took to the local streets to find classes and boutique studios that would both elevate your current fitness plan and keep you coming back for more. When it’s time to refuel, see the three soothing spa services that will rejuvenate your skin for summer. For your other health and wellness needs this season, see pg. 22 for five healthy dishes to try from a lauded local expert, pg. 50 for changes to make to your skincare routine that will have a big impact and more. THE REST IS HISTORY

// how it all started POPULAR PRODUCE Rufus Clark (below) was one of many Coloradans farming spuds in the 1800s. Potatoes were the mainstay crop of Carbondale (left) for more than 50 years.

PHOTOS: COURTESY DENVER PUBLIC LIBRARY

Anything but Small Potatoes Greenwood Village was a popular plot of land long before it became a booming town. One of the area’s claims to fame more than a century ago: potatoes. DO YOU CALL the portion of Greenwood Village east of Holly Street home? Well, here’s a fun conversation starter: In the 1800s, your land was likely part of a massive potato farm. It was, you could say, even considered spud royalty. Its ruler? Rufus “Potato” Clark, also known then as the “Potato King of Colorado.” A sailor, then gold miner and, finally, farmer who moved from Iowa to Denver in 1859, Clark owned a staggering 20,000 acres of Colorado farming land. Potatoes were his main crop, and they kept him busy—it is said that he could

haul as much as $1,500 of potatoes to Denver in a day.

South Denver, which the larger city annexed eight years later.

Due to his success, Clark’s “word was better than gold” according to the Fairmount Heritage Foundation. Case in point: Bankers would lend him money with no other collateral than a verbal promise to repay.

In the end, Clark sold most of his land to developers for “Clark Colony,” an area that was planted to be a type of orchard before the 1933 collapse of Douglas County’s Castlewood Dam flooded it.

When he wasn’t farming, Clark occupied himself serving on the Arapahoe County school board and, after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, raising money for victims by auctioning off sacks of his biggest crop. In 1886, Clark helped found the “dry” Town of

He died in 1910 at 87, but our love for the spud continues. Potato farming flourished across the state in Clark’s time, and today Colorado is the fifth largest potato grower in the U.S., producing on average more than two billion pounds of them every year.

Button It

// behind the bar

By Lori Midson

WEIRD. ELECTRIFYING. UNPREDICTABLE. You produce copious amounts of saliva and your tongue starts to tingle. Then, your mouth enters a kind of anesthetized state. And yet, flavors are magnified. The explanation for such a reaction? A dainty pink and yellow flower called the Szechuan button (also called the buzz button, sansho button, toothache plant or electric daisy). At Jing, the bewitching, nerve-triggering flower bud makes its appearance in the Drunken Buddha cocktail. “It’s our play on a lemon drop,” says general manager Christopher Ortiz. “What’s so neat about the button is that it completely changes the flavor profile of the drink. For some people, the cocktail becomes sweeter; for others, it becomes sour; and for some still, there’s a pronounced bitterness. It all depends on a person’s palate.” At first bite, the buttons—delivered to Jing three times a week from a California company called Fresh Origins—taste grassy. That is, until you nibble on the bud, swirl it around in your mouth and take a sip of your cocktail. The numbing sensation lasts just a few minutes, but it’s an exotic buzz that everyone should experience. “It’s so unique and special,” says Ortiz.

Square Meals to Master

There’s no time like the present to REBOOT YOUR HEALTHY MEALS INDEX. We asked Greenwood Village’s Tam John, founder of EatRight-LiveWell™ and author of A Fresh Wellness Mindset, for five smart dishes worth sampling in the weeks ahead. By Kendall Kostelic

MONDAY Best-Ever Breakfast Frittata Muffins Serves 12 INGREDIENTS 10 pastured organic eggs ½ cup cooked organic sausage (John uses chicken and apple sausage) ½ cup total of finely-chopped zucchini, red pepper and grated carrots 2 tablespoons finely-chopped green onion ¼ cup grated cheese (John uses pepper jack) Sea salt and freshly-ground pepper to taste METHOD Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line muffin tin with parchment liners. Whisk eggs in a large glass bowl or blend until frothy. Put about a teaspoon of sausage and grated veggies in liners, continuing to add and even out until both are fully added; repeat with cheese. Add eggs using a turkey baster, leaving a ¼-inch space at the top of each muffin. Lightly sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake on middle rack and begin to check at 18 minutes. To test, gently jiggle pan and insert knife into muffin centers. A clean knife and set muffins indicate doneness.

TIP: “Drink a large glass of water first thing in the morning. We wake up dehydrated because our bodies perform thousands of actions while we sleep.”

THURSDAY Tempeh Scramble Serves four

METHOD

6 ounces non-GMO, organic tempeh

3 tablespoons olive oil

WEDNESDAY

Napa Dandelion Salad

Tamari

Serves four INGREDIENTS One bunch finely-chopped, rinsed organic dandelion greens ½ cup green onions, thinly sliced 2 cups Napa or savoy cabbage, thinly sliced 1 cup broccoli sprouts Optional: grilled fish or chicken DRESSING 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon mirin or rice wine vinegar ⅛ teaspoon sesame oil

TIP: “Everyone needs quality protein, but in the right amounts. Eat protein in no larger quantities than the size of your palm— larger portions turn to sugar.”

INGREDIENTS

FRIDAY Asparagus Roll-Ups Serves two INGREDIENTS

Add pineapple and/or cooked proteins, if using, and stir to coat, gently warming on low. Turn heat off and fold in greens. Drizzle with tamari once greens are wilted.

Blanch asparagus, which can be done the night before, for 2 to 4 minutes, boiling spears and then immediately immersing in ice water—keep spears bright green for optimal nutrition. Drain when cool. Or keep asparagus raw, if desired. Lay out ham slices and place 3 asparagus spears in the center of each slice. Add a dollop—about half an ounce—of goat cheese in the center of the bundle and roll up ham. Wrap a red pepper slice around each bundle, overlapping the ends like a shawl. Bake for about 10 minutes.

THE CURRY DISH AT DTC’S AMBLI WE ALL CAN’T STOP ORDERING IS MORE THAN JUST A GOOD PLATE OF FOOD.

EAT HERE Ambli DTC 720.749.4703 amblidenver.com

By Kendall Kostelic TO LEARN a little something about the heritage behind Ambli, just order the restaurant’s kuku paka. You have likely enjoyed the chicken and coconut-curry dish before. The very first meal owners Pariza Mehta and Kelly Morrison put on the menu when the restaurant opened more than five years ago, it’s an Ambli staple and, only available at the DTC location today, a constant customer favorite. But for Mehta, kuku paka (pronounced coocoo pawkah) is more than just a solid seller: “My

mom and dad are fifth generation Tanzanians; I am the first generation in the U.S. This is a true Tanzanian dish. It’s very special to us. Every child, man and woman in the East African culture or born into an East African family knows how to make it.” The creamy, mildly spicy entrée features a coconut-curry made of “onions, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, jalapeños, cumin, coriander, turmeric, chiles and chili powder and a little bit of lemon juice,” Mehta says. That tasty sauce—the actual coconut flavor 26

very subtle—simmers all day. Then it’s combined with just-grilled chicken breast. “It’s common in Indian cuisine and similar foods to have the chicken simmer in the curry while the curry is cooking,” she adds. “At Ambli, we keep the sauce and chicken separate so the chicken that goes into the dish is fresh. You never get second-day chicken.” Mehta’s favorite way to eat kuku paka is to dump the whole thing over the accompanying bowl of rice and dig in. Say no more. We’ll be right over.

COLORADO SUN can be brutal on outdoor furniture. To avoid unnecessary wear and tear, Shimp and the homeowners chose a leathered granite countertop for the outdoor kitchen and outdoorrated appliances from companies like Delta Heat. The cedar pergola also protects the kitchen area. TIP: Don’t forget to plan for proper ventilation with overhangs.

The owners wanted a “BLOOMING GARDEN to surround the backyard” to create both beauty and privacy, says Shimp. Aspen, Colorado blue spruce, cockspur hawthorn and ponderosa pine trees create that privacy. Multiple tiers of stacked stalls and retaining walls invite guests, too, to explore garden alcoves.

THE OWNERS of this Castle Pines home had a real vision for their backyard: To walk outside and see “elegance in a native setting, a French-country-meets-Vail-Valley vibe,” described Troy Shimp, senior designer at Lifescape Colorado. The only catch? It was going to require a lot of patience to get there. The yard, says Shimp, was hilly, had a severe slope from side-to-side and had never been landscaped. Shimp and his team, however, were up for the challenge. It took 10 months to make the homeowners’ dream of an outdoor resort-level living space a reality. Its features: a copper spa, an oversized fire pit with a stone sofa, a lounge area separate from the fire pit, a private hanging bed, sunken trampoline, remote horseshoe pit and an expansive outdoor kitchen and bar. To make all of these areas on the 40,000-square-foot plot (equal to a little under one acre) feel cohesive, Shimp and the homeowners designed each component to feel like an extension of the house. This meant tying all of the stone in the yard to the home’s original architecture and materials—the landscapers even took limestone off of the house to help things match—and, between each activity area, planting the same flowering perennials and evergreen and deciduous greenery. “The clients did their homework. They came to us with many ideas and visual aids to explain their vision,” adds Shimp. The result of such teamwork: a true entertaining space the homeowners plan to invite friends and family to enjoy all year long. 29

THE COZY HANGING BED was placed against a wall for privacy. Be sure to use fabrics made specifically for the outdoors—Shimp recommends Sunbrella— for easy cleaning and to maintain fabric color.

CONSIDER ALL OF YOUR NEIGHBORS. There are wilder Colorado residents around, so be cognizant of what plants and features could attract undesired creatures and what could hurt wildlife. A Rocky Mountain plant guide can be a great resource. A TIP TO START: Shimp says Japanese beetles have been on the rise in the area, which can make it difficult to grow and sustain rose bushes.

DON’T FIGHT THE NATURAL VIBE. Bringing in native grasses to your yard can be less expensive to maintain and still add beauty. It’s also more ecologically responsible. Here, Shimp mixed Colorado grasses with wildflowers.

Contemplating

COMPOST

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE ONE INGREDIENT YOUR GARDEN IS MISSING.

By Annie Nagel LOOKING to take your greenery to the next level? Simple—make your own compost.

d Have

The DIY fertilizer can sound intimidating, but it’s a no-brainer for making flowers flourish, says Luan Akin, Tagawa Gardens’ garden outreach ambassador: “We are just playing copycat to what mother nature does.”

START COLLECTING “MATERIALS.” d Composting requires a mix of “brown material” and “green material,” says Akin. The brown materials provide carbon that microbes need to break down the organic matter and turn it into soil. Dried leaves, dried grass clippings, straw, sawdust and eggshells are all good options. Make note for next year: Collecting leaves this fall will help you start a very active compost pile next spring.

Once you take a little time to learn the basics, it’s a skill any home horticulturist can absolutely master. Ahead, Akin details how to get started.

plastic tarps close by: You want to cover the pile when it rains.

SET ASIDE SPACE IN THE BACKYARD. d Pick a spot with partial shade that still has good access to the sun. You want an appropriate amount of rays that won’t fry your pile, says Akin.

d Green

d While

TEND TO YOUR COMPOST LIKE YOU DO YOUR GARDEN. d Composting is all about balance; your pile should never be too moist or too dry. A good rule of thumb is to keep the moisture level equivalent to a wrung-out sponge, which means you will need to water it periodically.

it isn’t necessary to build a structure, it can be helpful for maintaining heat and keeping critters out. Akin recommends something three feet high to balance air flow and insulation.

materials are nitrogen-rich kitchen scraps such as fruits, vegetables and, used sparingly, fresh grass clippings. d Never

add meat, cheese or oil.

d You

also need to turn or “fluff” the mound regularly with a pitchfork or similar tool to let oxygen in. Air pockets are essential for spreading microbes. d If the pile begins to smell, it’s a sign that your

compost is too wet. If it’s too dry, all active signs of materials breaking down will stop. d Temperature

is also a big indicator of active microbes. Compost should reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees F and, after it’s stirred and oxygen is added in, read between 135 and 140 degrees F. Measure the temperature with a compost thermometer, available online and at garden centers. Compost will cool when it is ready to use. USE IT. d Your compost is set to go in the garden when it no longer bears any resemblance to the materials you put into it and, instead, looks like soil. Mix compost with the soil already in the garden to make what Akin calls “black gold.”

Garage

Rehab

JUST IN TIME FOR SUMMER,

Lindsay Cleveland, professional organizer and owner of Centennialbased Life. Organized, provides expert insight on embarking on a mega garage clean-out. By Jennie Nunn

START SMALL. When it comes to organizing and clearing out this high-traffic room, the best thing you can do is just start, says Cleveland: It can sound intimidating, but “most of the time all you need to do is install a few shelves or cabinets, take a trip to a donation center and put out a large pile of trash.” STEP ONE: “Take everything out of the space and give it all a hard look. For every item, ask yourself if you need it, if you use it and if you love it. Are a pair of skis you haven’t taken to the slopes in 10 years, for example, something you need to survive?”

NEED MORE STORAGE? “Look for unused spots. Is there an empty wall? Can you install overhead racks? I go to The Home Depot for garage shelving and storage units. Bring the exact measurements of your space with you and plan to buy more than you think you need; you can return what you don’t use.” THINK BIG. “Big gear in the garage can be difficult to organize. I love to use overhead racks that hang from the ceiling whenever possible. Store bikes vertically and fishing poles and skis from the ceiling or underneath ceiling racks using hooks. For the kids’ sports equipment, I love to use the Rubbermaid FastTrack Rail from The Home Depot. It’s easy to install and adjust and it lasts forever.” MAKE YOUR CAR A PRIORITY. “I’ve had clients who will let their brand-new Range Rover sit outside—even scraping snow off of it in the winter—while their high-school yearbooks take up the car space in the garage.” Your garage’s intended purpose is to house your car, Cleveland says. Don’t let that go to waste.

THEN RECYCLE AND DONATE. All of those old paint cans can go to Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore dealers. Cleveland likes to donate other items at Arc or the Disabled Veterans of America.

GO TO THE PRO

OVERALL, MAKE IT WELCOMING. “The garage is often the first room you see when you get home. It should bring you joy.” AND KEEP THINGS IN ORDER. “One of the biggest rules in maintaining an organized space is if you get it out, put it away. Once you get into the habit of putting things back, the clutter will disappear.” 34

WORKOUTS THE WORKOUT: FAB Jump Fusion THE GYM: FAB Method Greenwood Village 303.229.6704 thefabmethod.com

THE WORKOUT: Custom routine THE GYM: Enduro MTB Training Greenwood Village 303.883.0435 enduromtbtraining.com

ON A TYPICAL DAY, it takes me roughly half of a new fitness routine to decide if I like the method. The day I joined FAB Method for a 50-minute Jump Fusion class, I made that decision in thirty seconds flat.

WHEN IT COMES to finding the perfect workout and improving your overall fitness, Dee Tidwell will tell you that there is nothing more important than personalization. “Humans are like snowflakes,” he says. “If you just glance at snow, all the flakes look the same. Go closer, though, and you will see they are all very different.”

I was perched on the back of a custom-made Pilates reformer, known here as a FABFormer, for the very first move—a type of crunch—and after just a handful of reps my muscles were shaking. This surprised me. Tackling H.I.I.T. (high intensity interval training) three to four times a week, I’m no stranger to tough workouts. But in less than a minute FAB Method co-owner and instructor Kadi Bain had my body visibly trembling—and I hadn’t even attempted the studio’s one-of-a-kind jump moves yet. FAB Method, co-owned by Bain and Kiki Pierce, opened in 2017 and has made a name for itself as a fitness destination that really serves up a challenge. Some of that is thanks to this class. Designed to combine modern Pilates movements with bursts of cardio, a padded board is secured to the end of each FABFormer. For every major muscle group worked, you do at least one move continuously pushing off of the board, creating resistance and added difficulty. Before long, I’d crunched, planked, lunged and lifted my way through most of the class. There are no breaks between moves here and, without that, not much time to check the clock. Instead, you start a move slow and repeat it with varying pulsing reps before moving to another exercise. With just eight spots in every class, Bain was quick to help with form when I got tired.

HOLD EVERYTHING FAB Method co-owner Kadi Bain and avid FAB participant Randy Pierce work their glutes, abs, arms and more on the FABFormer.

Tidwell, owner and head coach of Enduro MTB Training, explained his metaphor as we stood in his studio. I’d come to get a taste of his lauded custom workouts, which he crafts equally as much for cyclists and other major athletes as he does for the average Joe. I was prepared to walk away feeling like all other workouts I’d done were child’s play, but, like the feeling that comes with a long plank, the burn was gradual and more thoughtful than I expected. Before I even thought about breaking a sweat, Tidwell wanted to know what I’d done to stay healthy by way of an extensive questionnaire. He asked for everything from my dimensions to how much water I drink. Then came a physical evaluation, where he cross-examined further to find root causes of issues I’d highlighted. He inquired, for instance, about the thickness of my bed pillows. He took me through a series of movements to measure my mobility, calculated using an angle ruler, and a few days later handed me a binder comprising my fitness routine. The exercises largely focused on the maintenance of a proper pelvic and lower-back position, something he had identified as my “area of need.” During a yoga-ball exercise, Tidwell paid extra attention to form. “If you can do 10 perfect reps and lose your form on the 11th, do nine,” he said as my lower back began to droop.

I finished feeling immediately sore and, like so many other FAB Method fans (including Denver Broncos players), outright hooked.

Post-stretching, I felt loose and ready to take on the day. The next morning, however, was a different story.

THE WORKOUT: Sound Off Experience Fierce Movement THE GYM: Fierce45 Cherry Hills Village 720.390.7807 fierce45.com TO SAY THAT I was in for a unique experience was an understatement. I was sitting on a reformer machine at Fierce45’s new Cherry Hills location, getting ready to do a fitness class taught completely through headphones. You read that right: headphones. Known for their “high intensity, beat driven, mindful movement” mantra, Fierce45 has taken the local Pilates community by storm, or should I say by sweat, since opening its first studio in 2015. This new Sound Off Experience available only at the Cherry Hills location, where each participant listens to a class-specific playlist and the instructor’s cues through an individual pair of headphones, takes things up a notch. Before the 45 minutes began, the instructor asked us to write our names and our intention for the day on a chalkboard in front of our designated reformer (here, a FierceFormer)—a motivating touch. Then the timed, upbeat playlist and our workout began. Though we got every direction through the headphones, the instructor was constantly walking around the room to adjust form. I found I didn’t mind the headset. Hearing the instructor’s voice and music blast into my personal audio dome created an almost meditative feeling: It was easy to focus on my workout, tuning in to my body while tuning out to those around me. Combining balance, strength and control with quick transitions, we moved all over the FierceFormer; working legs, abs and arms in poses that weren’t unfamiliar to this yoga junkie. Unlike yoga, however, my legs were constantly shaking as we increased resistance and moved deeper into poses, holding them for what seemed like an eternity. Ending in child’s pose, with my forehead to the front base of the machine and my legs still quivering, I couldn’t help but feel like I had survived a rhythmic battle.

WELL-HEALED Roskopf has been mending muscles through MAT for more than two decades.

Feeling Unusual Aches and Pains?

A serious injury can set you back weeks, if not months. To keep moving, it’s important to watch for signs of impairment, alter your workout accordingly and sit down with an expert. We talked with one of the best—Greg Roskopf, founder and CEO of Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) who has worked with the Denver Broncos and Nuggets—on his recovery methods. By Drew Kort WHAT IS MAT? “MAT is an assessment tool that identifies and corrects muscular imbalances and weaknesses.” WHAT MAKES MAT UNIQUE? “Most muscle processes focus on tightness and use techniques like stretching, foam-rolling and massage to counteract it. With MAT, we understand that limitation in range of motion or tightness means muscles that are supposed to contract and move into certain positions can’t contract or shorten effectively. This causes muscles opposite of the problem area to tighten up. It’s not about resolving tightness; it’s about strengthening and fixing altered pathways.” HOW DO YOU CORRECT THESE IMBALANCES? “Through hands-on therapy, MAT activates muscles in a way that improves the ability to contract, which strengthens, loosens and helps muscles move more efficiently.” WHAT CAN WE DO AT HOME? “If you start to feel tightness in a certain area, don’t stretch. Trying to stretch out a tight muscle actually violates a protective mechanism in your body. Back off from exercises that aim to increase mobility too and, instead, perform isometric contractions and low-intensity exercises to strengthen the muscles.” Muscle Activation Techniques Englewood 303.745.4270 muscleactivation.com

THE TREATMENT: Hot Stone Facial THE SPA: Beau Visage Skin Care and Spa Greenwood Village (303.779.5002) and Littleton (303.978.1155) bvspa.com

I’M THOUSANDS OF MILES from home—at least that’s how far I feel from life’s usual worries.

MY SKIN WAS parched, dull and in need of some serious TLC. And, for that, I’m grateful— because it led me to this euphoric hour with Debbie Harris of Vérité Skin and Lash Studio.

IT’S A STRESSFUL WORLD outside Beau Visage Skin Care and Spa. Inside, however, is an entirely different story.

I’m cocooned in a weighted blanket in a peaceful private room at Glosshouz, a day spa, hair salon and blow-dry bar in Centennial. The rest of the world—bustling restaurants, a big shopping center and, a few miles up the road, the office—is right outside. But if you’d told me in this moment that I was in the Denver Tech Center and not off at some secluded wellness resort, I’d say you were lying. The reason for my blissful escape? The spa’s Detox Seaweed Gel Wrap and Soaking Spa Bath Bliss. Ideal for transforming skin from dry and dull to shiny and supple, the seaweed gel features sea kelp, which stimulates metabolism, and blue-green algae from Oregon’s Upper Klamath Lake, which hydrates and detoxifies. The wrap starts with an exfoliating Dead Sea salt scrub. Laurie, my aesthetician, scrubbed away every sign of those spring snowstorms, stopping to warm and clean my skin with juststeamed towels. Then comes the gel, also made with willow bark extract, aloe vera oil, vitamin E, rosehip seed oil and lavender. The gel steeps for 20 minutes. Before Laurie left me to absorb its nutrients, she wrapped me in protective foil and that down-like blanket. I fell asleep; and she was back in the room all too soon. The wrap was, well, wrapped up, but I wasn’t done at the spa just yet. I still had 20 minutes to soak in a private tub, a service at Glosshouz usually treated as an add-on to other spa treatments. I moved from the table to the warm bubbled water with a strawberry mimosa—just one of the drinks from Glosshouz’s beverage menu—as my bathing companion. When my soak was done, I slowly, reluctantly made my way back to reality. Good news for those of you who don’t have to return to everyday life just yet: Uncorked Kitchen, with its vast wine bar, is right next door.

—Kendall Kostelic

Harris enlivened my skin with a custom version of her Revitalize Facial, an anti-aging treatment. As the sole staff member of Vérité, which she founded a few years ago, we got to do everything one-on-one. To start, I filled out several pages of paperwork and we discussed my skin-care concerns (how do I keep the wrinkles and sun damage at bay?). Then, it was time to slide under some cozy blankets on the bed in her compact treatment room (inside Colourbar Salon and Spa) and let her go to work. Harris was easy to trust, her own skin a glowing testimonial to her business. I guessed she was in her 40s, but she admitted to being a decade older. The trick to her great skin, she said, is regular facials and the right products. There’s nothing quite like the pampering that comes from a skilled aesthetician’s soothing touch, she added. I couldn’t agree more. My face felt fresh after a gentle Milk and Honey Cleanser from Louisville-based Sanitas Skincare. A pumpkin enzyme mask slightly tingled as it activated, exfoliated and dissolved dead cells—though still hydrating and minimizing the appearance of fine lines. By the third step— Sanitas’ hydrating VitaRich mask with a combination of vitamins, humectants and emollients—I felt serene. While the VitaRich worked its magic, Harris massaged my neck, shoulders, face, hands and arms. For the final skin quencher, she applied a peptide-infused serum and moisturizer and the all-important sunscreen. I left the salon feeling plumped up, rosy and armed with a great tip: To get the most out of a product, Harris explains, gently pat it on your cheeks, forehead and neck before smoothing it in.

I took a short drive down familiar streets to get to this oasis. It’s tucked away in a retail center in Greenwood Village; if you weren’t looking for it, you could very well walk right by. I, however, knew just what I was ambling toward: the spa’s hot-stone facial. The treatment combines the best elements of a hot-stone massage and a soothing, luxurious facial. It is, in a phrase, 90 minutes of heaven. In the waiting area, I’m soothed by the sight and sound of a floor-to-ceiling water feature while I browse the skin-care products, gifts and other various wellness items on the adjacent wall. My spa service begins with a consultation discussing my skin-care concerns and treatment goals. Moments later, I’m enjoying a hand and foot scrub, and the hot-stone massage is underway. “The rocks help release muscle tension,” my aesthetician, Sommer, explains as she moves the warm stones across my arms, hands, legs and feet. I’m feeling pampered before the moisturizing facial has even started. Even so, Sommer cares for my skin using vitamin-infused products that hydrate and replenish all that the Colorado climate has taken away. Her last technique: a facial massage by way of those pleasantly warmed stones, which then move to my shoulders and neck. All this along with a warm blanket, low lights, and a soft soundtrack has created a bubble of absolute peace that I’m not too keen to leave. Nonetheless, I emerge relaxed and happy after my mini-retreat.

BODY SCULPTING

COOL IT By Kelly Smith

THE TREATMENT: Emsculpt THE PLACE: Millard Plastic Surgery Lone Tree 303.792.5665 millardplasticsurgery.com I STROLL into the office of Millard Plastic Surgery and, admittedly, feel doubtful as to why I’m here. I’ve heard about this non-invasive Emsculpt treatment, a new service supposedly designed to help you build muscle and lose fat, but I struggle to get on board with the “finally get the abs you want!” messaging behind it. I’m also, however, fed up with the stubborn layer of fat that seems to be permanently nestled over my abs, regardless of how many planks I hold or miles I run. And Emsculpt claims typical results give patients 16 percent muscle growth and 19 percent fat reduction over the course of four treatments. Plus, Emsculpt was designed for people like me. “The ideal patient is somebody who’s fit, but maybe isn’t getting their desired results,” says Dr. John A. Millard, FACS, the doubleboard certified plastic surgeon behind the office. It’s also for those focused on improving their abs or buttocks without any downtime. To start, my practitioner straps a paddle directly onto my abs and flips the machine to 20 percent intensity, gradually buzzing me up to a full 100. Through the use of HIFEM (high-intensity focused electromagnetic technology), my muscles are pulled into a supramaximal contraction 20,000 times in 30 minutes, Dr. Millard says. Think of it this way: While you can only tell your brain to voluntarily contract your muscles to a certain point, this machine does the full motion for you in superspeed—and I just get to lie there and chat about skipping the gym. Each time a contraction hits, it feels like I’m right in the middle of a crunch. My muscles quiver, letting me know actual work is happening. Every few contractions, the machine switches to a tapping mode that helps break up the lactic acid my muscles are releasing, Dr. Millard says. When the 30 minutes are up, my abs feel tired and, if they had real emotions, I’d say accomplished. While I have three more treatments to go before full results, I noticed an immediate difference the next day. I was slightly sore—like after a tough Pilates class—and, while it may be a placebo effect, my core felt more engaged.

SO YOU’VE DONE the hard work with diet and exercise and it has gotten you close to where you want your body to be. But there is still that last little bit— like love handles or a small belly bulge—that resist all of your efforts to reduce. It may be time for CoolSculpting, a non-invasive treatment that freezes fat cells the body can then safely flush away. CoolSculpting is not a weight-loss technique, says Facial Aesthetics’ Katia Marino, a master-certified CoolSculpting specialist. Rather, it’s a way to lessen extra fat cells in specific areas. “Candidates who are within 10 to 15 pounds of their ideal weight will see the best results,” she says. With no recovery or downtime to speak of, this is the kind of treatment you can do over a lunch hour, prior to a date or even just before a day on the slopes, says Marino. The exact time on the clock for each session? Thirty-five minutes. The CoolSculpting device uses a gentle vacuum to gather the skin and fat between two panels. Then it freezes the fat cells. Some clients, says Marino, report a pulling sensation when the tissue is drawn into the panels, but the area goes numb once freezing has started. While you wait, you can read, watch a movie or, our favorite, utterly relax and nap. “Some people notice a difference in the treated area as early as three weeks,” says Marino. “We typically see peak results at about 90 days, after the lymphatic system naturally flushes the destroyed fat cells away.” Very cool.

7 Ways to fine-tune Your Daily Routine

THE BENEFITS OF DIFFERENT SKIN-CARE

techniques for different times of the year are more than tall tales. To keep skin healthy, it’s actually important to switch up your usual system. Follow these tips from Lisa Haigh, an aesthetician at Beauty Lounge with 10 years of sought-after experience, for changes to make as soon as this evening.

1 6 2 7 By Laurel Thompson

EXFOLIATE FOR GLOW. “We should all exfoliate year-round, but it’s a step people can forget. When you don’t exfoliate, you are putting good product on dead skin and, oftentimes, dealing with a lackluster complexion. For best results, exfoliate once a week. Any more than that and your skin will get irritated.”

GET SERIOUS ABOUT VITAMIN C. “I use a vitamin C serum specifically. I like serums because they are made of smaller molecules that our skin can more easily absorb. A vitamin C serum is a great antioxidant that helps protect against sun damage while assisting with collagen production, minimizing dark spots and hydrating the skin. I apply it under my sunscreen.”

3 4 5

DON’T FORGET ABOUT RETINOL. “I apply a retinol product, the gold standard for anti-aging, at night. It’s proven to reduce fine lines, tighten pores, even pigmentation and boost collagen production.”

to protect your lips with an SPF balm.”

KEEP HYDRATING. “What you put in your body directly impacts the appearance of your skin: Make sure you are consuming lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and water. The best foods for skin health contain lots of antioxidants and vitamin E, as well as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.” TREAT YOURSELF TO A MASK. “Face masks work best when used, at most, two to three times a week. My favorite mask is the Shawnté Smith Skincare Quench Mask (created by Shawnté Smith, the founder of Beauty Lounge; available at Beauty Lounge). It’s great for every skin type and has non-toxic, clean ingredients.”

SWITCH TO A LIGHTER MOISTURIZER. “Ideally a tinted moisturizer with SPF. Skin can naturally hydrate itself in the summer, making heavy moisturizers you used in colder months too much for your skin.” DON’T GO ANYWHERE WITHOUT SUNGLASSES. “The skin around the eyes is the thinnest on the face and ages first. Protect the area from sun exposure and squinting (which causes fine lines and wrinkles) by always wearing shades—and, of course, sunscreen— when outdoors. Be diligent about reapplying sunscreen and don’t forget

FACE TIME TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT, GENTLEMEN: summer skin-care—and a

proper face-grooming regimen—is important for you too. It’s quick and easy to maintain once you learn how to care for your face the right way, says Nick Anderson, co-founder of Tribute Barbershop Lounge. By Dahlia Jean Weinstein MAKE USE OF QUALITY TRIMMERS. “Hair, in general, grows faster in summer due to the sun and extra activity,” explains Anderson. “Look for trimmers or clippers with a range of guard options. Andis, Wahl and Oster are excellent brands.” CONDITION. Texture can become an issue in warm weather. To keep hair soft and manageable, Anderson suggests using a conditioner (such as Gibs Grooming Con Man Hair Pudding) or beard oil (like Gibs Grooming Bush Master, Voodoo Prince or Manscaper). TAME FLYAWAYS. Calming unruly facial hair requires a balanced product—something that is lightweight, but still strong enough to contain stubborn hairs. Gibs’ beard pudding or Baxter of California’s Cream Pomade can both get the job done. DON’T GET SUNBURNED. Do everything you can, Anderson says, to avoid a facial sunburn. That includes regularly applying a moisturizer with SPF. If you do burn, don’t aggravate the situation: “The skin would be more sensitive if you shave it and the hair protects you from further rays. It’s best to just leave the area alone.”

Going Against the Vein With today’s treatments, VARICOSE and SPIDER VEINS ARE IN TROUBLE. By Laurel Thompson

THERE ARE TREATS we look forward to with the arrival of warm weather, like scoops of ice cream stacked a mile high, parties on patios and open-toe shoes. Working to conceal (sometimes painful) varicose and spider veins is far from that list. If you already have them, know you’re not alone—around 60 percent of men and women have some kind of vein issue. And if you haven’t seen them quite yet, be on the lookout: More than 30 million people in the U.S. have varicose veins.

Before tackling sclerotherapy, work with your surgeon to find and treat the source of your vein issues. “There is usually a deeper vein causing spider veins and, unless you get to and treat that root first, your spider veins won’t go away,” he says.

TO MAINTAIN VEINS AT HOME, stay active. Aside from genetics, both vein types are caused by a lack of circulation. Dr. Siroospour recommends getting up every hour to keep your blood moving. When you’re seated, contract your calf muscles by flexing your feet upward. Compression socks and elevating your legs to alleviate discomfort will help, too.

Hope, however, is not lost. Today, vein treatments are far more effective and far less invasive. We asked Dr. David Siroospour, FACS, founder and general and vein surgeon at Colorado Laser and Vein, to bring us up to speed. VARICOSE VEINS, says Dr. Siroospour, used to be treated with vein-stripping procedures done under general anesthesia that caused permanent scarring. Now a laser treatment is the most popular remedy: “We insert a tiny laser fiber into the varicose vein and the heat of the laser closes it. The body then naturally gets rid of the vein over the next four to six months by absorbing it. There is no downtime. I have people who get this procedure and then run a marathon a week later.” THE MOST EFFECTIVE SPIDER VEIN treatment is sclerotherapy, a medication injected into veins via a small needle. “You’ll see the spider veins disappear instantly and then come back looking brighter than before,” Dr. Siroospour says. “This is a good sign because it means the medication reached the whole group of veins. They’ll look worse for a few weeks before completely disappearing.”

WAYS TO TRAIN LIKE AN ATHLETE Revive your fitness routine with these techniques from Smith, used with professional athletes and his other clients. Hint: there’s nothing trendy here, just tried-and-true steps. SET A GOAL. An attainable objective will give you a reason to stay motivated. CALL A BUDDY OR CREATE A TEAM. There are real benefits to accountability. Have someone who can encourage you and workout with you. GET OFF MACHINES AND BACK TO THE BASICS. Machines are convenient and can be easy to use, but exercises that incorporate your own body weight are usually more effective. Think TRX, push-ups, pull-ups, jump rope and other activities you did in your elementary school gym classes. MIX IT UP. Don’t do the same workout dayin and day-out. Tired of regular cardio? Try boxing. Bored with working up a sweat indoors? Sign up for an outdoor boot camp. KEEP A FRESH PLAYLIST. Music makes a workout way more fun. Smith changes his playlist monthly. Some current favorites: Wow by Post Malone; Nonstop, Drake; Sicko Mode, Travis Scott; Pure Water, Mustard and Migos; and Mona Lisa, Lil Wayne featuring Kendrick Lamar.

WANT MORE out of your exercise routine? Follow the example of professional athletes, says Brandon Smith, a personal trainer and instructor at Greenwood Village’s Club Greenwood. To be sure, Smith is referring to an athlete’s exercise regimen: Just like the rest of us, he says, the pros need a plan and someone to check their form, count their reps and generally push them. There’s another way to walk a mile in their shoes though. Schedule a session with Smith. He has worked with a number of NFL players, including running back Kapri Bibbs, a Colorado native who is now a member of the Green Bay Packers. The trainer has also helped Demaryius Thomas, Knowshon Moreno, Bennie Fowler and Eric Decker, all of whom spent parts of their careers as Denver Broncos. “Brandon has a unique style of training that incorporates athletic

performance, boxing and overall conditioning,” says Vic Spatola, Club Greenwood’s longtime personal training director. Smith started working with the pros through referrals. Early in his career, he lived in an apartment complex where a number of Broncos players also resided. “During the off-season, I would see them at the pool. One day we were talking and I told them what I do and invited them to a workout. I started training them from there,” he recalls. Though he has extensive experience with athletes, Smith spends most of his time working with club members from a wide range of ages and stages of life. On a typical day, you’ll find him leading high-intensity cardiovascular interval training sessions and specialty classes such as “Rumble,” a workout that combines boxing and strength training. “The most rewarding thing about being a trainer is making a difference in someone’s life,” he adds. Smith works out about five days a week and, on his lunch hour, can often be found playing a pick-up game of basketball, a game the natural athlete has played since he was 5 years old. When exactly did personal training come into view? For that, we have Club Greenwood to thank. Smith, who grew up in Aurora, was offered an internship at the gym in high school, where he spent 900 hours learning the ins and outs of the club and its programs. He loved the environment so much that he studied health and exercise science at Colorado State University, to which he earned an academic scholarship. After getting his degree, he returned to the club and has been on the team since. “It’s my job,” he explains, “but it doesn’t feel like work.”

What a few of Fell’s longtime collectors and friends say about her and her art.

TRICIA AND FRANK, collectors and friends for more than 20 years Tricia and her husband, Frank, have amassed close to a dozen of Fell’s originals over the years, but one piece of art stands out: a painting of Tricia gifted to Frank from Fell. “It’s kind of a faceless sketch, but it captured me completely,” Tricia says. “There’s a lot of touches from her that are just really special for us.” STACY, collector of ten years “Carrie’s bold use of color and signature style makes her pieces a focal point in any room,” says Stacy, who owns a variety of paintings and sculptures by Fell. “Her artwork is magnetic, much like her personality.”

YOU PROBABLY RECOGNIZE the iconic subjects and vibrant strokes of Carrie Fell’s artwork. Her faceless cowboys and hard-charging horses have not only become a permanent addition at Georgia’s Booth Western Art Museum (the world’s largest exhibition space for Western art and an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute), but also grace the walls of Shanahan’s Steakhouse and thousands of other private and corporate spaces. Fell’s unique collection featuring her interpretation of skier athletes thrilled the world, too, as it appeared on buses, buildings and gondolas when she was selected as the official artist for the 2015 FIS Alpine Championships in Vail. Working from her Centennial studio, Fell has enjoyed a

ROSALIE SZILAGYI, longtime collector and friend Szilagyi and Fell met on an art committee for a non-profit in 1993. While Szilagyi has Fell’s pieces hanging in her home and her husband’s medical practice, she also likes to use them in interior design projects under her company 42 West Design Studio: “I love using her pieces because they fit in a lot of different settings.” The color and movement of her abstract horses and cowboys, Szilagyi says, have an element of timelessness.

and color. I’m a colorist, and that love of color is the bridge going in to the next wave of my art.” WHAT IS THAT NEXT WAVE OF YOUR ART? “I want to capture the area’s changing urban scene. This city is undergoing huge changes with all of the metropolitan development and people moving in. We are not as connected as we used to be, and I think there is an opportunity there. I hope it inspires connection and a general responsibility for humanness and accountability and brings a return to that lifestyle of celebrating the things around us.”

lauded art career spanning 25 years. But today, she says, it’s time for new inspiration for her work. She stepped away from the canvas to talk with us about her art, Colorado and the changing nature of both. HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN AN ARTIST? “I studied interior design and then made a diversion into fine art in about 1989. Becoming an artist was an accident to be honest. I taught myself to paint by pouring pigment on canvas.” WHY PAINT THE WEST? “I started painting cowboys as a way to pay homage to an honesty and integrity that I thought was waning in the vibe and lifestyle of Colorado. WHAT ASPECTS OF METRO DENVER AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS WOULD YOU SAY ARE WORTH PRESERVING? “That’s a tough question. As a third-generation native, I’ve seen a lot of change here. Colorado has always been laid back and a really genuine place to live, but now that the state is becoming more populated we are losing our easiness. There is also this revival within that. My focus with Modern Social will be on the romance of simpler times.” DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PIECE? “I don’t. I think all of my paintings are unique and wonderful. It’s exciting to revisit my art in person after years have passed. There is always a nuance that calls me back to the moment of inception. The feeling is really great because that moment can never be recreated.”

TAKE A HIKE. “During our visit last fall, I went on an amazing two-hour guided hike,” Kristen says. “Our guide told us all about the area and the different plants and animals that call it home. There are many hiking paths starting at The Ritz-Carlton, so it’s easy to get out and explore.” SCHEDULE A TEE TIME. “The Red Sky Golf Club had been on my bucket list and I finally got to play there last year,” Todd says. “There are two courses, one designed by Greg Norman and the other by Tom Fazio. I played on the Greg Norman course on a perfect Saturday morning.” PLAN SOME SERIOUS SPA THERAPY. The spa, for one, has great treatments, Kristen says: “I’m picky when it comes to massages, but the one I got on our trip last year was one of the best I’ve ever had. The grotto, the different spa pools and the sauna, too, make for one serene afternoon.”

LISTEN FOR LIVE MUSIC. “We recommend catching the hotel’s daily concerts,” Kristen says. “We really enjoyed them, and my cousin, who recently visited from Switzerland for a ski trip, said the music was a highlight of her stay.” GETTING HUNGRY? “You can’t miss when it comes to the food here,” says Todd. “The Ritz-Carlton has a delicious brunch and, from Blue Moose Pizza (a casual eatery) to Beano’s Cabin (ideal for a nice dinner), there is a little bit of everything in town. In the winter, you get to Beano’s Cabin by sleigh. In the summer, you can get to the restaurant by wagon ride, horseback or shuttle van.” 64
