Whether for painted steel or molded polyethylene drums, our fi lm and heavyweight paper facestocks have been chosen for their ability to withstand harsh environments and outdoor exposures. In fact, all our drum portf olio facestocks have passed BS 5609 Secti on 2 and 3 Marine Immersion label testi ng, including a threemonth exposure to saltwater, as part of Internati onal Mariti me Dangerous Goods (IMDG certi fi cati on).

Our Drum Portf olio facestocks are combined with our best-in-class adhesives to off er needed versati lity. Because these labels are typically hand-applied, drum adhesives must be repositi onable to amend misapplied or misaligned label applicati ons. The adhesive must also wet-out quickly to become permanent, remaining highly durable over a drum’s long-term exposure to the elements.

The Avery Dennison Drum Portf olio includes a wide selecti on of printi ng materials that are certi fi ed for BS 5609 secti ons 2 and 3. These certi fi cati ons encompass specifi c label constructi ons for printi ng on specifi c OEM equipment. Our Drum Portf olio has grown as this market has grown, and as shippers have adopted a wider array of printi ng platf orms.

Today, the portf olio includes off erings for the commonly used fl exographic, laser, thermal transfer, and UV Inkjet OEM printers used in drum printi ng. More recently, the portf olio has again expanded to align with the growing trend of waterbased inkjet drum-label printi ng.

A portf olio that makes BS 5609 materials selecti on easy It’s likely that very few people involved in drum labeling would write “BS 5609” and “easy” in the same sentence. BS 5609 represents a strict and specifi c set of rules to ensure labels can withstand the harshest conditi ons.

When converters do business in the mariti me drum and container space, there really is no alternati ve. All label materials—adhesives, facestocks, and inks—must be compliant and certi fi ed for the BS 5609 standard.

For many Avery Dennison customers, however, “BS 5609 made easy” rings true—and has for a long ti me. We’ve invested in the technology, the experti se, and the OEM relati onships necessary to create a portf olio of products and testi ng services that removes many of the toughest hurdles faced by converters who serve mariti me shippers.

A broad and growing portf olio Our product portf olio is built on a foundati on of proprietary adhesives. These off er high repositi onability, fast wet-out, and outstanding durability with long exposure to the harsh elements of marine environments. It also features facestocks certi fi ed for not only fl exographic, laser, and thermal transfer, but inkjet.

These constructi ons can be used on a variety of surfaces, including painted steel, polyethylene drums, totes and super sacks. All have passed BS 5609 Marine Immersion label testi ng.

Aligning with the waterbased inkjet trend Most recently, we’ve grown our portf olio to align with trends in printi ng platf orms used for BS 5609 labels. We’ve off ered constructi ons that are BS 5609-certi fi ed for Epson water-based inkjet printers since that company introduced the trend a few years ago. Today, we’re seeing more OEMs enter the space—such as Primera, NeuraLabel, Afi na, and Colordyne. We’re working closely with these companies to test and certi fy our materials for their equipment as we conti nue to expand our portf olio.

End-to-end technical and customer support As with any Avery Dennison product, we off er technical support spanning simple answers and product selecti on guidance, to more in-depth services. Our Global Client Services Laboratory (see arti cle, page 16), can conduct an array of tests to ensure a converter’s preferred label constructi on is compliant. Compared to third-party testi ng, our lab off ers similar confi dence with a much faster turnaround.

The bott om line is that there really is litt le reason for label converters to stress over compliance with BS 5609. Avery Dennison off ers the soluti ons shippers need.
