After School Offerings FALL 2026

WELCOME TO EXPLORERS Explorers, Avenues’ after-school program, offers a wide array of exciting on-campus activities after the school day ends. Many of the world’s greatest scientists, artists, athletes, and mathematicians got their start early, exploring their curiosity and passion outside of formal schooling. Inspired by these changemakers, we curated opportunities for students to follow their curiosity, excel in their passions, and just plain have fun.

PROGRAMS AVAILABLE ●

Specialty Classes are offered to nursery through 5th grade, Monday through Friday. Classes cover a wide variety of topics, including art, dance, STEAM, sports, and more.

●

Stay and Play is our after-school care for students in nursery through 5th grade. Activities during this time include arts and crafts, group games, and outdoor play. Stay and Play is offered five days a week from dismissal to 5:15 p.m. Enrollment is entirely flexible. Families may enroll students on a daily or multi-day basis.

●

Private Music Lessons are available to students in pre-K through 12th grade. Lessons are taught by both Avenues music teachers and instructors from The Practice Room, offering students a wider variety of instruments, including trumpet, saxophone, violin, guitar, flute, clarinet, piano, drums, voice, and more.

●

Chess Team: Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are welcome to join the chess team after meeting with a chess coach to determine their readiness for tournament play. Joining the team is a commitment: team members are expected to attend chess team training every Friday, regular weekend tournaments on campus, and four additional major tournaments each year.

GENERAL INFORMATION Registration: ●

Registration for the fall season opens on Wednesday, June 3, at noon, and remains open as long as spots are available. Space is limited, so we encourage you to register as soon as possible.

Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Upon registration, you will receive an electronic confirmation email listing classes in which your child is enrolled.

●

All classes are contingent upon enrollment. If a class is listed as full, please sign up for the wait list as we make every effort to open additional sections to meet demand.

Calendar: ●

Starting next year, our fall season will run through Friday, January 29, followed by the spring season, which will begin on Monday, February 1. This will help ease the transition back to school from winter break, without immediate changes to their after-school routine. We also believe this creates a more balanced calendar for students and families across the school year.

There are no after-school classes on holidays or early dismissal days.

●

Given phase-in in the Early Learning Center, after-school classes for nursery, pre-K and kindergarten students will begin on their first full day of school.

Pricing: ●

Fees are available on our registration page. The cost of each class is based on the number of days it will run. If your family receives financial aid, you will receive a unique code to apply at checkout.

Procedures: ●

Our team handles all logistics, including student transitions and dismissal.

Students are escorted from their classrooms to an after-school transition room, where they sit with their after-school groups and enjoy a snack. The after-school teacher then escorts students to their designated classroom.

●

Dismissal takes place in the lobby of 536 for ELC and 259 for Lower Division.

Please use QT upon arrival. To support families with children in both Avenues buildings, we have staggered dismissal times to provide a window for families to pick up their ELC child first, then their Lower Division child.

NURSERY MONDAY Under the Sea Art Adventures (3:00–4:00 p.m.)

Young artists will explore the wonders of the ocean through hands-on projects inspired by colorful coral reefs, playful sea creatures, and shimmering underwater landscapes. Using a variety of materials like paint, clay, collage, and mixed media, children will create their own fish, jellyfish, seashell art, and ocean scenes while learning fun facts about marine life. This class encourages creativity, sensory exploration, and self-expression in a playful, supportive environment where every child can make waves with their imagination!

TUESDAY Capoeira (3:00–4:00 p.m.)

Capoeira emerged in Brazil as a means of empowerment, freedom, and survival for enslaved Africans. It was practiced on colonial plantations and in quilombos— communities of free Africans and their descendants living in the backlands. Capoeira grew into a beautiful form of cultural expression that celebrates flexibility, strength, cleverness, and playfulness. Today, Capoeira retains its playful quality. It is widely enjoyed for its aesthetic appeal as a competitive “dance.” In 2014, UNESCO recognized Capoeira’s unique significance by placing it on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Capoeira community continues to grow internationally, spreading across six continents and reaching millions of people worldwide.

WEDNESDAY Bubbly B's Interactive Musical Theatre Class (3:00–4:00 p.m.)

Join us for an exciting mix of interactive activities, musical fun, and educational elements—such as letters, numbers, animals, and colours—to stimulate creativity and encourage active participation.

Expect lively songs and playful dance routines that transform each class into a unique show-like adventure. Through the magic of music, storytelling and character work, we build an engaging and musical environment where children can explore, learn, sing, and dance to their heart’s content.

NURSERY (Continued)

THURSDAY Soccer (3:00–4:00 p.m.)

Our youth soccer program offers a fun, positive, and non-competitive environment where children will learn the fundamentals of soccer. Our coaches use positive reinforcement to teach skills while building confidence. The focal point for this age group is for children to be comfortable with the ball, further developing soccer skills such as dribbling and shooting, and introducing passing. Classes include partner activities to promote sharing, listening, respect, and cooperation.

FRIDAY Ballet (3:00–4:00 p.m.)

This class provides young students with a joyful and developmentally appropriate introduction to ballet through Tutu Ballet School. Through creative movement, music, and age-appropriate technique, students begin building a solid foundation for future ballet study while nurturing their creativity, coordination, and love of dance. Tutu Ballet's approach encourages a lifelong appreciation for the arts and provides an enriching early experience that supports each child's growth, whether they choose to pursue ballet more seriously in the future or simply enjoy the many benefits of movement and expression.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN MONDAY Soccer (3:00–4:10 p.m.)

Our youth soccer program offers a fun, positive, and non-competitive environment where children will learn the fundamentals of soccer. Our coaches use positive reinforcement to teach skills while building confidence. Physical activities include dynamic exercises like moving at a pace, changing directions, and lateral agility. These classes will start with a warm-up, continue with skill-building, and end with a small-sided scrimmage match.

Yoga (3:00–4:10 p.m.)

This fun and calming class introduces children to the world of yoga and mindful movement.

Through playful poses, gentle stretches, breathing exercises, and imaginative games, children learn to connect their minds and bodies while improving balance, flexibility, and focus. Each session encourages creativity, self-expression, and relaxation, helping children build confidence, reduce stress, and develop healthy habits for both body and mind. Perfect for little ones ready to explore movement with intention and joy!

TUESDAY Robotics and Engineering (3:00–4:10 p.m.)

Our robotics and engineering students will be constantly building, designing and problem-solving using any materials they can get their hands on. Building challenges will bring structural engineering and physics concepts like friction or weight distribution into focus, while robotics projects will call for the mastery of mechanical engineering concepts like circuitry or conductivity. This course will foster students’ inquisitiveness through constant exposure to new materials and new tools, whether it’s practicing dynamic taping techniques or learning how to use a power drill.

Parkour (3:00–4:10 p.m.)

In this dynamic movement class, students build strength, coordination, and confidence through small obstacles and movement games. They learn safe and efficient movement patterns while developing self-regulation, problem-solving, and social skills—all while having fun and making new friends. Progressions are carefully scaled to each child’s age and skill level, with partner activities and group games fostering a strong sense of community.

Once Upon a Canvas is a magical, hands-on art class designed for young children where storytelling and creativity come to life together. Each session begins with an enchanting story that sparks imagination—filled with whimsical characters, exciting settings, and gentle themes that inspire young artists. After the story, children are guided through a creative art project using painting, drawing, collage, and mixed media to bring elements of the tale onto their own canvas.

Along the way, students explore color, texture, and simple art techniques while building confidence in self-expression. This joyful class encourages creativity, early literacy connections, and a love for storytelling through art in a playful, nurturing environment.

THURSDAY Chess (3:00–4:10 p.m.)

Whether your child is a beginner or has already learned the basics of chess, these interactive classes led by Growing Minds will enhance your child’s focus, foster problem-solving and critical thinking, and teach the fundamentals of the game. These classes will solidify basic chess rules, review piece movement, introduce chess notation and coordinates, help students learn how to build and execute a plan for different parts of the game, and lay the foundation for long-term strategic gameplay. Our expert instructors will assess your child’s skill level and provide the instruction necessary to build upon their existing skills so they are ready for more advanced classes, tournament play, or chess team.

Our curriculum promotes resilience, self-confidence, and emotional intelligence, enabling children to take positive action towards environmental sustainability.

FRIDAY Taste Bud Travelers (3:00–4:10 p.m.)

Our young chefs will embark on a delicious journey around the world! We'll whip up recipes from their favorite books and TV shows, such as Harry Potter® and SpongeBob Squarepants®. We'll “travel” to Italy for a hilarious, funny-face pizza party, head to Japan to learn the art of sushi-making, then to New York to bake NY-style individual cheesecakes. From mixing and measuring to decorating and tasting, our classes are designed to spark creativity, build confidence, and foster teamwork and curiosity.

KINDERGARTEN MONDAY Adventures in Animation (3:00–4:20 p.m.)

Students will use a variety of materials to build props, characters, and fantastical mini-movie sets for original stop-motion animation films. Experiment with combining live action with animation, as well as effects like drawing on each frame, and utilizing green screens and stock footage.

Students will also learn to create their own sounds and special effects to add to their shorts as they work in post-production, finishing their animated shorts. By exploring various stop-motion and digital animation techniques, students will be able to create a multitude of 2D and 3D projects.

Mini Cake Masters (3:00–4:20 p.m.)

Unleash your inner pastry artist! In this hands-on class, students will learn the basics of cake decorating while having a blast. From frosting techniques to fun designs with sprinkles, edible glitter, and colorful piping, each child will create their own mini masterpiece to take home. Perfect for young bakers, this class encourages creativity, fine motor skills, and a love for baking. No prior experience needed—just a big imagination and a sweet tooth!

My First Piggy Bank (3:00–4:20 p.m.)

Earn, save, spend, donate! Through math games and hands-on activities, students will learn about these and other key financial concepts like money, budgeting and saving. Students will also learn the basic concepts of philanthropy and donating to charity. Additionally, everyone will make their very own piggy bank to take home.

Design and build your own fantastic structure from your favorite story! Stories bring an element of play, and play is the key to architectural and engineering design, which has both plot and structure. Did Jack’s beanstalk really reach into the clouds? Was Rapunzel’s braid strong enough for a climbing rope? What could you change to help these three little pigs keep their houses from wolf’s destruction? Could we live under the sea? This course is about turning your favorite story into an actual built reality.

Tumbleweeds (3:00–4:20 p.m.)

Join our gymnastic coaches for a fun-filled tumbling experience. This class is specifically designed to teach children body awareness, balance, floor gymnastics and tumbling... safely.

GRADE 1 MONDAY Chess Tactics (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

Tactics are an integral part of chess and occur throughout all phases of the game. This dynamic class focuses on common tactics such as Pins, Forks, Skewers, Double Attacks, Deflections, Discovered Checks, and Mating Attacks. Each week, we prepare a variety of puzzles and chess brain teasers so students of all playing levels are challenged and engaged. This class encourages imaginative chess play and is ideal for a student who has mastered piece movement and the basic rules, has tournament experience, and enjoys working on puzzles and exercising creativity.

Tumbleweeds (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

Join our gymnastic coaches for a fun-filled tumbling experience. This class is specifically designed to teach children body awareness, balance, floor gymnastics, and tumbling... safely.

What do Pythagoras, Vitruvius, Michelangelo, and Leonardo have in common? They were all remarkable engineers, mathematicians, and inventors. In this course, students will learn to recognize complex mathematical patterns and creatively solve challenging real-world problems.

Some topics we will cover include Design - Could the axle of the wheel be moved without compromising the wheel’s efficiency? Could you design your own building materials? Tension and compression - How can these forces help us design buildings?

Parkour (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

FRIDAY Creative Film Making (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

Lights, camera, action! During this class, students can become a director, actor, cinematographer, and/or editor. Using professional equipment and technology, students will work together to learn how to use cameras, audio equipment, and editing software, all while creating original video projects and movies. We will also build props, combine claymation and live-action video, experiment with the potential of green screens, practice various camera tricks, use stock videos, video filters, and much more!

Art Explorers (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

Young artists dive into a world of creativity as they explore new art materials and mediums. From watercolor and painting to sculpture, collage, charcoal, and even recycled and unexpected materials, each session is a new adventure where students learn and explore new art supplies and styles to express their full creativity!

In this drawing-forward class, students explore 3D drawing, shading techniques, and pencil and charcoal art to add depth, texture, and realism to their creations. Perfect for young artists ready to take their skills to the next level!

Cheerleading (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

Cheerleaders will work on energetic movements and chants as well as basic stunting and tumbling skills. WEDNESDAY K-pop Dance (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

Get ready to dance, groove, and shine like your favorite K-pop stars! In this high-energy class, students will learn fun choreography to upbeat K-pop hits while building rhythm and performance skills. We'll bop to BLACKPINK, bounce to BTS, and hit the stage to perform our best HUNTR/X moves! Perfect for young performers who love music, movement, and a little extra sparkle on stage.

Coding (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

Every activity in this course is designed to help students build fundamental coding skills. They give each young inventor an opportunity to strengthen their logical thinking, develop their troubleshooting skills, and become resilient to the challenges that come with using any new technology or tool.

THURSDAY Stitch Lab: Creative Sewing & Design (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

In Stitch Lab, students explore the art and craft of sewing while unleashing their creativity.

Enigma Explorers: Puzzles as Mathematical Thinking (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

Enigma Explorers invites students to strengthen their problem-solving and critical thinking skills through engaging puzzles, logic games, cryptograms, and visual challenges. Designed by puzzle experts, this class encourages students to recognize patterns, think flexibly, and develop strategies while exploring puzzles from different cultures and traditions. Through hands-on activities and collaborative problem-solving, students experience the excitement of discovery and the satisfaction of the “aha” moment.

FRIDAY Junior Investors: Bulls & Bears (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

Learn how you can start investing at a young age in this fully interactive program! Build your own $100,000 stock portfolio and trade stocks like Apple, Nike, or Amazon with a cool investing simulation tool. This innovative experience empowers students with the tools and mindset to face future investment decisions with confidence and buy low, sell high! A solid foundation for a successful future for investors!

Art Explorers (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

Young artists dive into a world of creativity as they explore new art materials and mediums. From watercolor and painting to sculpture, collage, charcoal, and even recycled and unexpected materials, each session is a new adventure where students learn and explore new art supplies and styles to express their full creativity!

GRADE 4–5 MONDAY 3D Drawing (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

Learn to make your drawings pop off the page and truly come alive! In this drawing-forward class, students explore 3D drawing, shading techniques, and pencil and charcoal art to add depth, texture, and realism to their creations. Perfect for young artists ready to take their skills to the next level!

Coding (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

Every activity in this course is designed to help students build fundamental coding skills.

They give each young inventor an opportunity to strengthen their logical thinking, develop their troubleshooting skills, and become resilient to the challenges that always come with using any new technology or tool.

TUESDAY Cracking Cases: Reasoning and Logic Lab (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

This class transforms students into junior detectives as they solve story-based mystery cases through math, logic, and language challenges. Designed by a team of PhDs and expert educators, this engaging program encourages students to think critically, analyze clues, solve puzzles, and build reasoning skills through creative, cross-disciplinary problem-solving. Each session ends with a collaborative debrief where students reflect on their strategies and discoveries.

WEDNESDAY FIRST LEGO® League (3:00–5:00 p.m.)

FIRST LEGO® League is an international robotics program that introduces students to mechanical and software engineering through exciting robotics challenges. Students build problem-solving skills while working in a collaborative, inclusive, and fun environment. The program is led by an experienced FIRST Robotics mentor, alongside student mentors from the Avenues Robotics Team. Classes are held in the Early Learning Center building (536 W, 26th St).

WEDNESDAY Novel Study: Where great books become great thinking (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

This class invites students to dive deep into rich, thought-provoking novels through close reading, discussion, and analytical writing. Designed by a team of PhDs and expert educators, this class encourages students to explore themes, characters, and author's’ craft while developing critical thinking, interpretation, and discussion skills through engaging Socratic-style conversations. A physical copy of the novel is included in the class fee.

THURSDAY Stitch Lab: Creative Sewing & Design (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

In Stitch Lab, students explore the art and craft of sewing while unleashing their creativity.

FRIDAY Sneaker Design (3:00–4:30 p.m.)

A creative opportunity for young designers to explore artistic expression! In this class, students learn the fundamentals of drawing sneakers from different angles while creating their own original designs. Guided by expert instructors, they’ll develop sketching techniques, experiment with colors and patterns, and bring their creative ideas to life.

Policies

Registration and Waitlist Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are welcome to join as long as seats are available in a class. Upon registration, you will receive an electronic confirmation notice listing the classes in which your child is enrolled. All classes are contingent upon sufficient enrollment.

Pricing and Billing Prices are listed for each class on the registration page. We accept payment via credit or debit card.

All classes must be paid in full upon registration. Fees cover the current season only.

Cancellations Cancellations and class changes must be officially requested by emailing explorers@avenues-ny.org.

Cancellation requests will be processed within five business days. ● ● ● ●

If a cancellation is requested before the program starts, 100% of the course fee will be refunded.

If a cancellation is requested after the first class, 75% of the course fee will be refunded.

No refunds will be issued after the second class.

You are welcome to switch programs within the season if space is available.

This policy is based on scheduled class meetings, not on the number of classes the student attends. No exceptions will be made, so please familiarize yourself with the policy before registering your child.

Make-Up Lessons If a child misses an after-school class due to illness or a scheduling conflict, we cannot offer a make-up class. If an after-school class is canceled due to a teacher’s absence, we will make up for it by adding extra time to future classes.

Inclement Weather Please note that if a class is canceled due to inclement weather, we are unable to offer a make-up session or a refund. We appreciate your understanding and commitment to safety.

Dismissal Please ensure you arrive on time for pick-up. If you require additional care for your child, Extended Care is available until 5:15 p.m. for an additional cost.

Behavior Policy Avenues reserves the right to respond to each student's behavior with a broad range of appropriate options, from conversation to suspension to possible termination of enrollment. It is in such an environment that students learn to assume responsibility for their actions and understand the consequences of their behavior. Handling of behavioral issues is guided by the belief that while errors of judgment may have consequences, they are also opportunities for learning.
