Michael Timmis, elected in June 2009 as Ave Maria University’s third chairman of the Board of Trustees, will complete his final term this semester after a successful tenure that saw the University finish the construction of its campus, more than double its enrollment, and grow into national prominence. Patrick Rainey, a successful Orlando businessman and vice-chairman of the Board for the last two years, was unanimously elected to succeed Timmis at the August Board meeting in Michigan.
Timmis, a long-time resident of the town of Ave Maria, husband of 27 years to Laura, and proud father of their five children (including an AMU alumna as well as a current senior), presided over a dramatic expansion of the University and its academic offering. “It has been a great privilege to serve the fine faculty, administration, staff, and students of the University, and get them the resources they needed to excel,” Timmis said. He remains a member of the Board and will continue to chair its Investment Committee.
A native of Tennessee, Rainey met his wife, Louise, when they were undergraduates at Ole Miss. He has served on the Board since 2012. They have two children and five grandchildren and reside in Orlando where Rainey previously was CEO of Encore Construction. “I have enjoyed my years on the Board and am honored to now serve in this new leadership capacity,” Rainey said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues and the new president as we build upon what Tom Monaghan started and Jim Towey and his team developed.”
Rainey was elected to a four-year term and will chair the Board’s November meeting. He currently serves as chairman of the Board’s Enrollment Committee, and also is a member of both the Executive and ad hoc Presidential Search Committees. The Martha J. Burke Perpetual Adoration Chapel on campus is named in memory of Louise Rainey’s mother.
