BUILT ON TRUST: Supporting M&G Solid Fuels' Export Operations In logistics, success is measured not only by moving cargo from A to B, but by ensuring it arrives in perfect condition. For some products, that requires specialist expertise. For many years, our specialist logistics division Cockfield Knight has supported M&G Solid Fuels’ export operations, providing tailored port agency and logistics services built on trust, reliability and a commitment to quality.

A recent project involved exporting high-value solid fuel briquettes, a cargo particularly vulnerable to damage during handling and loading. Even minor breakage could affect product quality and result in financial loss, making cargo integrity a key priority. We addressed this challenge, by developing a bespoke logistics solution, reviewing every stage of the operation from transport and port handling through to vessel loading.

2

Close collaboration with our client, including a site visit to the Port of Middlesbrough, helped ensure transparency and effective planning from the outset. The team introduced revised handling techniques to minimise impact on the briquettes, while integrated transport planning and expert port agency support ensured the cargo moved efficiently through the supply chain. The team also coordinated road

haulage, secured vessel loading windows and managed customs clearance and documentation. The project demonstrates the value of specialist logistics expertise. By understanding the cargo’s unique requirements and adapting operations accordingly, with our combined expertise we ensure the products quality was maintained whilst meeting demanding export schedules.

Port of Middlesbrough positions itself as a specialist hub for bulk cargo The Port of Middlesbrough, has strengthened its position in the dry bulks market by enhancing its specialist handling capabilities and increasing the range of bulk commodities moving through the port. As a key multimodal logistics hub on the River Tees in the North of England, the Port of Middlesbrough handles a range of cargo types including dry bulk, break bulk and project cargo, steel and products for the renewable energy sector. The port is now focusing more on the dry bulk sector, handling over 200,000 tonnes in the last 12 months. The Teesside port is handling growing volumes of a variety of cargo types

including ferrous sulphate, polyhalite, petroleum coke, salt and other industrial bulk products. This diversification reflects increasing customer demand for ports that can safely, efficiently and reliably manage high volume, specialist bulk materials within integrated supply chains. Sustained investment in end-to-end bulk infrastructure continues to drive this growth, ensuring the port remains flexible and responsive to both inbound

and outbound bulk trades. Through its dedicated dry bulk facility, the port provides a specialist environment designed for the safe handling, storage and onward distribution of cargo. Located adjacent to the port and immediately next to Middlesbrough Goods Yard, it provides a comprehensive multimodal solution for bulk cargo. The facility offers large-scale storage capacity for thousands of tonnes of product, provides weather-protected warehouse space for sensitive materials, operates advanced filtering and separation systems and maintains an on-site weighbridge to ensure precise weight management. Direct rail connectivity enables efficient onward distribution and supports customers’ low-carbon logistics objectives. The port is also home to a rail linked canopy, enabling reliable, all weather rail operations and ensuring loading and discharge can continue uninterrupted in adverse conditions. moisture and contamination, helping to maintain cargo quality while improving operational efficiency and turnaround times. This covered environment provides customers with a dependable, year round rail solution that supports sustainable, low carbon freight movements. To deliver faster, safer and more efficient bulk handling for customers, the port has invested in Docksolid grab pits positioned directly on the quayside. These weatherproof, mobile pits are used to load cargo efficiently into vessels, reducing handling steps, minimising product loss and protecting sensitive materials from the elements. By positioning the pits close to the vessel, customers benefit from quicker loading rates, reduced turnaround times, improved cargo integrity and increased throughput, helping keep operations on schedule and costs under control. To underpin rising volumes and an increasingly diverse commodity mix, the port also operates a wide fleet www.portofmiddlesbrough.com

As part of our ongoing investment programme, we are further developing our dry bulk capabilities with the construction of a new rail discharge facility. The facility will be capable of handling a wide range of bulk aggregates, with throughput of up to 500 tonnes per hour.

of modern bulk-handling plant and equipment. This includes high-capacity cranes, capable of handling up to 3,000 tonnes per crane per day, fitted with multiple grab types, alongside forklifts and specialist machinery. Together, these assets are designed to handle a broad range of dry bulk products safely, efficiently and at scale. Port of Middlesbrough General Manager, Richard Hodgson said: “Our continued focus in the bulk cargo sector reflects both the scale of our investment and the confidence customers have in the Port of Middlesbrough as a long term bulk handling partner. We’ve focused on building capability, from quayside discharge through to storage and multimodal distribution. This way, customers know their cargo is handled efficiently, safely and have complete peace of mind.”

specialist infrastructure like the bulk handling facility, rail canopy and the Docksolids, we’ve created a more flexible, sustainable and competitive bulk port for customers across the UK and international supply chains.” We’re delighted to announce that work has officially begun on our multi-million-pound investment at our dry bulk facility. This exciting development includes the installation of a new rail line connecting Middlesbrough Goods Yard directly to the edge of our site, alongside a state-of-the-art conveyor system designed to move bulk products seamlessly and efficiently. Together, these enhancements will significantly increase our capacity, enabling us to handle and store greater volumes of material and further strengthen our operational capabilities.

Richard added: “Bulk cargo is a core strength of the Port of Middlesbrough. By expanding the range of bulk materials, we handle and investing in E: enquiries@av-dawson.com

AV Dawson Transport keeping Tees Valley supply chains moving For generations, AV Dawson Transport has kept goods moving across the Tees Valley and beyond.

Backed by decades of operational expertise, the business combines excellent service with a forward-looking approach designed to support customers today and tomorrow.

That heritage remains central to the business but it is also matched by a clear focus on the future, continual improvement and meeting the evolving needs of customers.

Part of the AV Dawson Group, the transport business offers a range of services including general road haulage, container services through the Tees Riverside Intermodal Park (TRIP) logistics hub and trailer maintenance. This integrated approach gives customers flexibility, resilience and direct access to road, port and intermodal networks.

As a long-established road haulage provider, AV Dawson Transport plays a critical role in keeping supply chains flowing and businesses connected.

www.portofmiddlesbrough.com

Over the past year, AV Dawson Transport has strengthened its operation through a period of investment and change. The business has realigned its team, welcomed new expertise, expanded into additional market sectors and increased capacity all with the aim of delivering a more responsive, efficient and scalable service for customers. A key priority has been ensuring the right leadership and operational experience are in place as demand grows. Appointments across business development, transport operations, planning and fleet engineering have

enhanced day-to-day performance, compliance and asset utilisation, particularly during peak periods. For customers, this means greater reliability, faster response times and improved continuity of service. Paul Scott, Head of Business Development and Partnerships, said: “This has been a really positive period for AV Dawson Transport. We’ve strengthened our foundations and sharpened our focus as a business, making sure everything we do supports efficient, consistent service for our customers. I’ve spent more than 20 years working purely in transport operations, so moving into a more commercial role has been a big change, but it’s been really rewarding. By clearly defining our core services of road haulage, container services and trailer maintenance we’ve been able to refine how we operate, broaden our customer base and continue building strong, long-term partnerships with customers. Expanding our container www.portofmiddlesbrough.com

services, increasing overnight capacity and recruiting additional night drivers means we’re better placed to support customers as their requirements grow.” Alongside investing in people and capacity, AV Dawson Transport is focussed on decarbonising its transport operations. The business has been trialling alternative fuel vehicles, including electric and compressed natural gas trucks, to assess real world performance, operational range and load suitability. These trials reflect the growing importance customers are placing on working with companies with a credible, long-term environmental strategy. By testing emerging technologies, AV Dawson Transport is building the insight needed to make informed, practical fleet investments that balance sustainability with operational reliability.

With a strengthened management team, expanded planning and maintenance capability and increased transport capacity, the business is well positioned to support customers across a broad range of supply chains. Growth brings new challenges but it also reinforces AV Dawson Transport’s reputation as a responsive, reliable partner. By continuing to invest in people, assets and partnerships, the business is delivering confidence at scale and will ensure it remains a trusted transport provider for generations to come. Meet the

TEAM Paul Scott, Head of Business Development & Partnerships AV Dawson Transport

As part of the newly rebranded CONNECT, we’re excited to introduce a brand-new feature shining a spotlight on the people behind AV Dawson. In our ‘Meet the Team’ series, we’ll be getting to know colleagues from across the business and sharing their stories, experiences and insights.

What’s your role within the business and how do you support our customers?

What’s one thing customers might be surprised to learn about you?

First up, we’re catching up with a familiar face who has played a key role in AV Dawson’s journey over the years.

My role is Head of Business Development and Partnerships. I support our customers by building long lasting relationships that add value to both parties. Listening and understanding their needs is important so that we can provide cost effective solutions.

That after 22 years in operations for AV Dawson Transport I have transitioned into a Business Development role. Although some customers will know this as I work so closely with them.

Paul Scott has been part of the AV Dawson team for more than two decades, building a wealth of knowledge and experience along the way. Now stepping into his new role as Head of Business Development & Partnerships for AV Dawson Transport, Paul is focused on driving growth, strengthening relationships and exploring new opportunities for the business. We sat down with Paul to talk about his time at AV Dawson, what inspires him in his new role and what he’s most excited about for the future. Read more…

8

What do you enjoy most about working here? The people and the ‘can do attitude’. I just love the ability to be able to pick up the phone from a customer and say yes. Then put the phone down and think ‘how on earth are we going to do this?’ But then the magic of working with all the different people within the business and calling upon their skillsets to get the job done!

www.portofmiddlesbrough.com

What makes our offer different from others in the market? The combination of operational reliability with customer experience and strategic value. I also think having a partnership mentality puts us heads and shoulders above others. We will go the extra mile.

E: enquiries@av-dawson.com

T: (0)1642 219271

What types of customers or sectors do you work most closely with? Steel, Bulk, Project Cargo and Fabricators.

What do customers most often come to you for support with? To resolve operational issues they are experiencing or potentially know they are going to be facing in the near future.

What does a good partnership look like to you? To be able to trust one another, have clear communication with one another, to be transparent and to have openness and honesty.

How do you build strong, long term relationships with customers? Building strong long-term partnerships for me is usually less about the original commercial offering and more about the trust, consistency and shared value over a period of time. I make the effort to go out and meet my customers www.portofmiddlesbrough.com

as often as I can. I take minutes and log issues/actions etc. with a view to resolve these quickly which gives the customer confidence that we will do what we say we will and look at innovative ways to resolve any challenges. It’s also beneficial to go out and meet face to face and get to know them all individually. By going to see people and taking the time, I get all sorts of golden nuggets that allow us to understand their growth plans and how we can best support them whether it be through transport, storage or port operations.

What trends are you currently seeing in transport and logistics? Unfortunately a sad trend in the logistics sector is that a lot of transport companies are going out of business due to various factors such as increased costs. Other trends we are seeing is customers expressing an interest in an increased use of technology, more interest in sustainability and what operational efficiencies we can offer. Within our own business we are seeing a lot of growth, especially in the container market. E: enquiries@av-dawson.com

What does a typical day look like for you? I get in and I go through emails and respond to the ones that need a quick response, such as quoting for new business or resolving any issues. I do try and book meetings 2-4 weeks in advance so I’m very much prepared for the day/week. A large part of the role involves conversations with existing clients, prospective customers, strategic partners and suppliers. So a real mixture of office-based work and out on the road visiting customers or attending networking events. Working on my sales pipeline is a daily task that needs attention plus supporting any operational issues.

How do you unwind outside of work? Spending time with my family. I love experiencing new things and travelling. This year I’m attending a number of concerts which is normally unheard of!

AV Dawson supports two major charity challenges in 2026

10

At the AV Dawson Group, giving back to the community has always been part of who we are. As a family run business founded in Teesside, our values go beyond the workplace. This year, that commitment is being demonstrated by our Chairman and Deputy Chairman, who are taking on two major charity challenges in support of causes that make a real difference to communities across our region.

Middlesbrough to Lake Como for Teesside Hospice In June, Gary and Freddie Dawson (Gary’s Son) will be taking on an ambitious fundraising challenge, driving from Middlesbrough all the way to Lake Como in aid of Teesside Hospice. Teesside Hospice provides specialist care, dignity and comfort to people living with terminal illness, alongside much needed emotional support for families and loved ones. For AV Dawson, the charity holds particular significance. It is based in the very

community where our business was founded and the values of the business and the hospice align closely. The journey will see Gary and Freddie spending around 10 hours a day on the road, with the goal of completing the challenge in just six days. It’s a demanding test of endurance and determination, taken on to raise awareness and vital funds for a cause close to home.

A JustGiving page has been set up, and we would be extremely grateful to anyone who feels able to donate or share the fundraiser with others. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps Teesside Hospice continue providing compassionate care to those who rely on it. Donate here:

Supporting Daisy Chain through the Great Wall of China Trek Alongside the Teesside Hospice, AV Dawson is also proud to support Daisy Chain, a Teesside based charity that delivers life changing support for autistic and neurodivergent individuals and their families. Chairman Gary Dawson and Deputy Chairman, John Young will be joining 11 other business leaders from across the Tees Valley to walk 50km along the

Great Wall of China in October 2026. The challenge spans remote, historic sections of one of the world’s most iconic landmarks, featuring steep climbs, uneven ancient steps and dramatic ridgeline paths. Over several demanding days (with no showers!), they will face a physically and mentally testing journey, rewarded by breathtaking mountain scenery and a true sense of achievement.

By supporting the trek, donors are directly helping Daisy Chain continue its vital work and create lasting, positive impact for autistic and neurodivergent people across our community and beyond. Donate here:

Whether it’s driving across Europe or trekking along one of the world’s most famous landmarks, both challenges reflect the passion, commitment and community spirit that run through AV Dawson. We’re incredibly proud to support Teesside Hospice and Daisy Chain and we’d like to thank everyone who has donated so far. www.portofmiddlesbrough.com

TENANT SPOTLIGHT:

Parkol Marine Engineering

At the heart of Port of Middlesbrough lies more than just a busy quay or a fleet of vessels, it’s a thriving community of businesses working side by side. Port of Middlesbrough is home to over 35 tenants across its 120-acre site, each bringing their own expertise and character to the port. It’s a vibrant ecosystem that many may not realise exists behind the scenes.

In a new feature series, we’re putting a spotlight on some of our tenants who are based at the Port of Middlesbrough. Each feature will explore a tenant’s journey, values and ambitions, highlighting how their work contributes not only to their own success, but to the wider Teesside economy and how it strengthens the AV Dawson ecosystem.

12

First up is Parkol Marine Engineering, a long-standing tenant with deep roots in the maritime sector. Their story is one of craftsmanship, resilience and innovation and offers a fascinating glimpse into the vital work happening right here on site. From its heritage and craftsmanship to its growing presence at the Port of Middlesbrough, Parkol’s story is a fitting place to begin this new series.

www.portofmiddlesbrough.com

For more than five decades, Parkol Marine Engineering has been shaping the future of British ship building, quietly building a reputation for quality, innovation and craftsmanship that is recognised across the marine sector. Established in 1971, Parkol was founded by two families, the Parkers and the Olivers and they came together with

Parkol’s move to the Port of Middlesbrough in 2017 was driven by insight and experience. Managing Director Jim Morrison was already familiar with the port and its facilities from earlier in his career, making AV Dawson a natural fit as Parkol looked to support growth and take on larger projects. That decision has proven pivotal enabling Parkol to access the space, infrastructure and flexibility needed to continue expanding its operations while remaining true to its familybusiness roots.

while maintaining precision, quality and efficiency throughout the process. Projects like these reflect not only technical capability but also the trust customers place in Parkol to deliver vessels that perform reliably in demanding marine environments.

a shared vision. Led by founders Ken Parker and John Oliver, the business was built on strong family values and a commitment to doing things the right way. That ethos remains firmly at the heart of Parkol today, proudly summed up in the phrase that still defines the business: “A legacy of excellence.”

Parkol’s commitment to excellence has been recognised through a range of industry awards, including New Boat of the Year and Shellfish Boat of the Year. These honours underline the company’s reputation for producing vessels that are not only functional and robust, but also intelligently designed with operators’ needs firmly in mind.

Operating from facilities in Whitby and the Port of Middlesbrough, Parkol Marine Engineering is known for delivering high-quality new builds, repairs and refits for a wide range of vessels. Its skilled teams combine traditional boatbuilding expertise with modern engineering techniques, enabling Parkol to offer a true turnkey service - from concept and design through to build, delivery and long-term support.

Today, Parkol Marine Engineering stands as a trusted name in UK boatbuilding, a company where heritage and innovation sit side by side. As vessels like Boats 067 and 069 take shape at the Port of Middlesbrough, Parkol’s future looks every bit as strong as its past. From its family-founded beginnings to award-winning builds and a growing presence at the Port of Middlesbrough site, Parkol Marine Engineering continues to deliver on its promise a true legacy of excellence, built to last. Find out more about Parkol Marine Engineering visit www.parkol.co.uk

That focus on end-to-end solutions has allowed Parkol to innovate, diversify and respond to the evolving needs of its customers, whether they are independent vessel owners or operators managing entire fleets. One of the fabrication halls at AV Dawson’s Port of Middlesbrough site is currently home to Parkol where they are currently building boats 067 and 069. These BV Class 28-metre trawlers are being built as a matched pair, designed to work together once completed. We are incredibly grateful for the longstanding support of AV Dawson, who have been a valued partner of The Teesside Charity for over 13 years. They have also provided event space and encouraged strong staff involvement. Their continued support has made a meaningful and lasting impact, and we are proud to work in partnership with them.
