CONCEPT

The school draws its inspiration from the river along whose bank the village of Marsassoum sits. Just as the river is central to the region’s cultural and economic life, the school becomes a new hub for education, culture and economic opportunity through its use of local materials, affordable construction techniques, and programming. Every classroom and program faces the courtyard, where collective life and community-building unfolds. School members can comfortably assemble underneath the tree’s extensive shade, whether informally between classes or for more organized events and celebrations.

The school is created by local human resources (teachers, students, people) & local materials (bamboo, clay bricks, rammed earth, straw) with a simple construction method which makes the structure anchored. The ground floor has load-bearing walls using a technique similar to cob walling. The upper storey is a frame construction of bamboo beams and vertical and diagonal members arranged at right angles to the building.

The upper floor is open and spacious, the openings and corridors offering views across the surroundings.

Below the stairs are benches and wall cavities to be used as reading spaces. Orchards and corrals serve as a source of practical learning for the kids.

ABOUT THE SITE Community spaces are the lungs of a community. IIT Roorkee being an academic community within a gated precinct deserve well-articulated community facilities. The current community hall is not adequate in today’s requirement and will be replaced by a new one by making the existing community hall a faculty club integrated with the faculty housing. Thus new community hall is supposed to serve IITR community and also beyond. The present staff club is in dilapidated condition and subject to pollution being adjacent of the Sewerage treatment plant (STP). Thus the staff club also needs to be relocated. There is a proposal to design and build a comprehensive complex of the community hall and staff club.

The main entrance addresses landscaping. The building is visually defined by a single-story continuous colonnade with a glass facade, which joins the rhythm of the existing trees and encloses the main hall.

The building is a two storeyed structured with parking in the basement.

The ground floor is designed to constitute the community centre, whereas the first floor inhabits the staff club functions. Service roads for loading/ unloading and fire safety has been provided all around the site. Guest houses are provided in a seperate structure and the landscape is been utilised for outdoor gym.

DESIGN CONCEPT Urban areas have been at the forefront of the COVID-19 crisis, with 95 per cent of all cases recorded in cities in the first months. With previous public health crises, the key determinants of risk for urban residents are inequality, inadequate housing and lack of access to clean water, sanitation and waste management. Compact, well planned cities combining residential and commercial functions with public spaces and affordable housing can improve public health, the local economy and the environment, despite the vast scope of challenges of the pandemic. As cities become overcrowded and living conditions increasingly undesirable, to be able to build homes on the water surface could increase available housing space and help de-populate overcrowded cities. As cities become more crowded, floating cities would provide a respite from the housing crunch, particularly in cities.

DESIGN CONCEPT

Open workspace layouts allow for more flexibility but simultaneously cause distrurbance though noise and interruption.

Commercial office buildings are known to consume lot of electricity.

Considerable amount of this energy goes into ensuring occupant comfort. This comfort can be ensured through sustainable means of providing adequate natural daylight and ventilation. It’s important that glass and window openings and their usage in a building is balanced in a way to improve daylighting without compromising the building’s thermal performance.

Hybrid offices can be established by locating the active zone away from the quiet zone while maintaining their proximity.
