I thank you all for your contribution for "PARTICLES".

Parsons Doha Toastmasters club was developed in 2018 and "PARTICLES" is our first ever Newsletter , I am really proud to be part of this production from a talented team.

It is important for VP-PR to ensure the club's promotional and other material has the correct visual elements that project an image of excellence. I really enjoyed and some time it was challenging, the support which I received from each and every member of the club is that what succeeded me to do my responsibilities.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

“W

ith great power comes with great

responsibility,” It is indeed a great pleasure, privilege, and a great responsibility to serve as the President, Parsons Doha Toastmasters Club for year 2020-2021.

What do we stand for? We are here to add a significant change in the lives of our colleagues by creating a conducive environment where each member learns from others. Mentors are also assigned to all members to help them grow and gain their confidence to the new dimensions.

“The year 2020 brought several challenges including the outcomes of COVID 19. We are all locked down in our houses. However, our journey to learn never stopped and we recurrently get in touch with our members through online meetings. We are meeting twice in a month for just two to three hours, where members have several roles to display including delivering the speeches, evaluating the speeches and impromptu speaking where speaker must have to speak without any preparation. These exercises built our level of sureness.

Are we the District and Division awards that we have won over past or the colorful ribbons that decorate our Club Banner? We are extremely happy and proud of that most of our members participated in annual contests and reached to Division level. We are striving to reach to District level and keep the bars high for our Club.

Are we the creative themed meetings we have on a regular basis? We would love to be our every meeting with full of learning, enjoyment, innovative and thrilling which kept our members engaged and charged.

We are a club whose members stand steadfastly true to the core values of the Toastmasters International, Respect, Integrity, Service, and Excellence. We are a club whose members don’t rest on their laurels but who repeatedly put themselves to test, open for varied challenges and willing to learn from each opportunity. The smiles we are trying to create on our colleagues’ faces, we are our service to the organisation in expectation of nothing, we are the sleepless nights we spend for someone else, we are the endless miles we travel to uplift someone, we are the speakers who aren’t bogged down by age, busy schedules, championships, and laurels but the ones who open ourselves to new opportunities, we are not perfect Toastmasters who never make a mistake but the ones who are never afraid of making one because we are the ones who know that perfection doesn’t exist but are willing to constantly work on our imperfections.

Public speaking was always my Achille’s heel, luckily it isn’t now after joining and actively participating in roles and delivering my projects. I welcome you all to explore yourself join the incredible journey with us. Remember, Toastmaster is a place where leaders are made.

P ublic speaking is so important in your life that it could be the deciding factor in many things such as

your career development, your business growth and even in the relationships you have with your friends and family. Public speaking is a skill you must learn to succeed in your life.

Martin Luther King who delivered his famous speech: “I have a dream”, inspired a nation and broke down

racial barriers. Without his leadership and his inspirational speech it might have taken an additional 10 years to bring equality to all races in USA. Hitler’s many speeches were delivered with extreme passion and caused arguably one of the most horrific genocides of all time. Throughout history it has been public speaking that has united people and caused great changes, both positive and negative. Given below are the ten reasons for the question: Why should you learn public speaking?

It increases your self confidence.

Public speaking will help you increase your self- confidence dramatically. We live in a materialistic society and you can’t avoid that. A lot of our self- worth and self- esteem is gained by our perceptions of what we think other people think about us. By doing public speaking you are increasing your skill at communicating with others, making you more confident around people automatically, and it also increases your skill at perceiving people’s reactions to your message.

It generates sales or gets you a better job.

If you own a business or do some form of work on the side public speaking is one of the best ways to

generate sales. Understanding how to effectively get your message across to another person can help you generate more sales for your company. Public speaking skills are also important in securing a better job. It is how you present yourself at a job interview that will be the ultimate decider as to whether or not you land that higher paying job and whether or not you get paid in the higher bracket or lower bracket of pay rates.

Public speaking still remains as one of the most effective ways to get your message across to a large audience. Every speaking opportunity is an opportunity to grow in leadership and influence. Having the opportunity to influence people’s thoughts (remember they’re taking time out of their busy schedule to listen to your thoughts on the world) put you in a position to create real positive change in people’s lives.

Public speaking will improve you communication skills, your leadership skills, your confidence and your ability to read and understand people. There are multiple other skills you will learn when public speaking that can actually boost your performance and fulfillment in other areas of your life.

Many people will avoid getting up in front of people to give a speech. By standing up and speaking to a crowd you are positioning yourself as an expert in your field and you have a great opportunity to share your knowledge.

One of the best ways to learn is to teach, and public speaking is exactly that…an opportunity to teach.

Public speaking is important because it helps you to improve your knowledge.The preparation that goes into a speech and the fact that you have to work out how to communicate to others effectively makes you understand your content that much better.

By having the confidence and ability to speak in public you can differentiate yourself in the workforce.This could put you in line for the next promotion or keep your head off the chopping block when the next redundancy rolls around.

By standing up in front of people and delivering a talk you can attract like minded people around

you.By giving speeches you can help to build your own tribe of supporters. Leaders have people rallying around them who will spend their lives to help the success of their leader. Wouldn’t you rather be a leader where people support you to help make you successful than support someone else’s success?

Public speaking is extremely important if you want to be a leader. People follow leaders who

inspire them and leaders who communicate their ideas effectively. If you can’t communicate with your team members, you can’t be a leader.

Parsons is in their 3rd Year and very active with multiple joint meetings and having a very strong educational program for their members. Regarding DCP points they are right on track.

ear members of Parsons Doha Toastmasters Club, It gives me an immense pleasure to write this message to Parsons Doha Toastmasters Club Newsletter.

I have a special attachment to this club because I was involved in this club from the time the idea of Parsons Doha Toastmasters Club was conceived. TM. Tamer Tahoun, founder president of the club and I worked very closely in arranging Demo meeting and chartering the club.It’s a pleasure for me to see the way the club is coming up strong in the last two years and members of the club are making their presence felt in District 116.

The club in its two years of existence, made two Area Directors. It is a very rare achievement for a new club.

The club also has some fine speakers. Usually corporate clubs have some challenges due to various factors but fortunately leaders and members of the club ensuring that the club functions well.

I am sure that the club executive Committee led by President TM. Bilal Mahmood and members made ambitious goals for themselves and for the club. I request all members to actively participate in Toastmasters activities and reap the benefits of Toastmasters.

I request all the members to work together to ensure club achieve 10 out of 10 DCP points and become President Distinguished Club. I take this opportunity to offer my best wishes to President TM. Bilal Mahmood, club Excom and members for a wonderful Toastmasters year and achieve more and more in your professional and personal life as well as in Toastmasters activities.

MESSAGE FROM FOUNDER OF THE CLUB

TAMER ABU TAHOUN PAST AREA DIRECTOR

I

believe that August 7th, 2016, was an unforgettable day. On that day, I had my first visit to any Toastmasters club ever, Qatar Toastmasters Club. I cannot forget the real warm welcome that I received from people that I have never met. In this meeting, I got inspired by three speeches that changed my life.The three speeches, about hope, love, and giving, changed my way of looking at the world. I learned that without hope we cannot live, without love we cannot have peace, and without giving we cannot feel a real self-satisfaction.

However, there was another important takeaway from this meeting which is how I can be a better speaker who can convey his message and ideas properly and effectively. Accordingly I started my Toastmasters journey with a full of enthusiasm that has not vanished till the time of writing this note, and I don’t believe it will ever vanish.

Since that day, I have felt that I am responsible, especially with the concept of giving back, to share what I experienced in Toastmasters with others. I started to talk to all people in my community about Toastmasters explaining the benefits of being a Toastmaster which most of those people noticed from the changes took place in my communication and leadership skills. However, I felt that sharing the information is not enough, I should establish a Toastmasters club in the company that I am working for, so my colleagues could feel the experience more than just listening about it.

By that time, I had two Toastmasters in our company who liked the idea of Toastmasters when I told them about and became members in the club, Qatar Toastmasters club, Akshay Dutta and Ibrahim Abbas.

When I told them about the idea of establishing a club in Parsons International Limited, without any hesitation, they agreed and offered to help in establishing our baby club. This baby club now is Parsons Doha Toastmasters club that has grown swiftly and got many rewards in addition of having Area Champions and the participation of its members in the division contest.

Just remembering this history invigorates my enthusiasm about Toastmasters. It is an experience that few lines could not really express its gratification and importance. The only way to feel it is to attend a Toastmasters meeting which the thing that I did since I believe in the quote of Lailah Gifty Akita, “If I had not tried and taken changes, I would have missed many great opportunities in life”. Same for you, if you have yet to attend a Toastmasters meeting, do not miss the great opportunity.

IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT

PARSONS TOASTMASTERS EXCELS AT ANNUAL CONTEST 2019-2020 this covid-induced crisis, when the whole world IN is striving for the vaccine, when face to face meeting is nothing short of a privilege, when nature puts restrictions on breathing freedom, it is my immense pleasure to write on this maiden issue of Parsons newsletter "Particles" – a refresher against all odds.

While, we can still guess about arrival time of vaccines, "Particles" is set to be launched.

Unquestionably, launching a maiden newsletter in the current context is not merely going through pandemic, rather it is growing through pandemic.

It was 12/12/2018, more than two years back, when this club took the first step towards a journey of thousand miles. Founder President TM Tamer decided to start the club with a sole purpose to spread the benefits of toastmaster that he was enjoying that time. As the proverb goes "if you are getting benefits from something then it is your moral responsibility to pass it to others". TM Tamer did just that. As a byproduct, suddenly, I got the responsibility of VPE, then the next year became President and now serving as Area 20 Director.

Without any exaggeration I must acknowledge the tremendous benefits that I received from toastmaster fraternity in last couple of years. Apart from guaranteed communication and leadership enhancement, I got a second home with 2000+ members ready to extend their helping hand - be it toastmaster, professional or personal front. And all of these benefits without paying any premium.

Toastmaster International provides a freemium model where success stories happen at one's will, pace and determination unlike so called institutions where a time bound training is capsuled with a hefty fee.

Parsons Doha has been in limelight since its inception. Despite being a corporate club where members are overloaded with official duties, it has never failed to mark an impression on every given opportunity. One such event was this year’s (20202021) Annual Contest- STEP 2020.

STEP 2020 It was held on March 6th, 2020, in Retaj Al Rayan hotel before Covid 19 hit us hard. Contestants were from constituting clubs of Area 21 who were filtered through the club contests held earlier in respective club premises. Parsons members participated in all categories and secured top positions in 3 out of 4 categories. As a result, o members represented Parsons at Division conference – DISCOVER 2020.

DISCOVER 2020 By the time division conference held in April 2020, there was a paradigm shift in the way we communicate in day to day life, due to advent of Covid 19. Consequently, the conference were conducted online. Despite, the tough competition among peer clubs, Parsons were able to come in top 3 in one category of the contest. However, the highlight of Discovery 2020 was the recognition of Parsons TM bagged most coveted “Most Improved Club of the Year” award.

WORLD’S NO. 1 DISTRICT Since then, we have been forced to adopt and adapt the new virtual meeting platform. Parsons club along with all other clubs showed remarkable resilience not only to overcome the obstacles but to convert them into opportunities as well. And together we did it again, yes District 116 retained the World’s no. 1 spot consecutively in the year 20192020. All members of Parsons TM club share equal and mutual feeling of pride towards success at top level.

Parsons Doha TM club has been on growing path primarily due to presence of learning environment of the club and its member’s dedication to do better each time. Let there be hunger for excellence as it is vital for the serving of community, society nation and the entire mankind.

I wish all the very best to each and every members of this passionate TM club.

MY TOASTMASTER EXPERIENCE

I

remembered back in October 2018 when Mr.Tamer Tahoun sent an e-mail to all Parsons Employees that there is a plan to establish a Toastmasters Club in the company. At that time, I was just only less than 1 year working with Parsons.

Although I can cope with all the technical aspects of my job, I was really struggling with my communications and team collaboration skills which I believe are very important skills to improve on to help our team and company’s success.

The lack of my ability in these skills triggered me to join Parsons Doha Toastmasters Club and I became one of the Chartered Members of the Club. Fast forward two years, I can tell that I improved in the skills which I was lacking but still there is a lot to learn which makes it more exciting in continuing my Toastmasters Journey. Special thanks to Mr. Tamer Tahoun and Mr. Akshay Dutta for opening the door for employees like me to have an opportunity to enter the Toastmasters Fraternity.

EVERY CLOUD HAS A SILVER LINING

E

very negative situation can result in some benefit. Like this pandemic Covid-19, when it started all over the world were panicking, just not knowing about how are we going to overcome this situation ? what will happen to our work, social and family relations ? We struggled a lot, when its being shifted to work from home option, our stress level increased, day night work, and isolated from the society, no direct interactions to outside world than family. But we improved a lot on technology, we learned good lessons from this and became more stronger and now we have the confidence that can face any challenges. We became super productive by working from home, even we don’t know how long this situation is going to drag us like this, but gained the confidence of overcoming everything.

Unlike this, some of us may have come across some censorious conditions in life, the worst feeling when someone makes you feel special and leave suddenly from your life forever, which will lead you through darkness, at that point you really need to bring yourself out from that comfortable zone, A comfort zone is a beautiful place but nothing ever grows there. You need to work hard to get out of it. It becomes really hard at that point to convince yourself that, love yourself, everything is depended on you, there you need a different version of YOU, which is quite a bit difficult. You are habituated to lie down in that particular zone where you lost hope and faith.

Its being told that " when you begin with believing and walk by faith you will never lose hope". when you try to be out of your comfortable zone, you can see the world is trying to judge you wrongly no matter what you do.

Only the perfect eyes which has the positive regard can see the perfectness within you, choose the appropriate one for you and the rest of everything just leave to time.The power of word can inspire as well as destroy, and these are good lesson for you to ahead yourself from darkness into light.

LOVE YOURSELF AS MUCH AS YOU WANT TO BE LOVED Believe in yourself, love yourself as much as you want to be loved, be kind to yourself, the purpose of life is to know yourself, when you start loving yourself you can see a different version of you with the energy and confidence to face the whole world. Things and people who were meant to be for you, will be with you and stop worrying about the rest. Remember after darkness there always comes light, every challenging situation has a big achievement at the end, only if you try to work hard for it.

Whenever negative thought starts creeping your mind try to replace them with the thoughts of happiness and positiveness. The cloud itself has a silver lining on it.

A BREAK IN DISGUISE

I

t is true that at some point of time, we would have all wished to take a BREAK. A short vacation is what one might be looking forward to ease off the stressful routine. For a few, a break might be in the form of travelling – exploring the various parts of the world, diving into the big blues, trekking into the woods or bike riding on to some hill stations. Whilst for some, a break means to simply sit home, read a book, watch movies or spend time with family.

2020, the fancy digit year, have been a roller coaster ride so far. It started by killing a lot of species in the Australian bushfire and then continued to lock the human races up in the form of a silent killer called novel coronavirus. This unexpected visitor put an end to most of our plans.

Where we used to gather, eat, gossip, sing, watch movies, roam around freely, are now empty. Masks and gloves became essential parts of our body.

“Are you safe?” “How are you doing right now?”

“Will there be a Lockdown?” are some of the default questions that pop up on our phone, over texts or over social media platforms. It is strange sometimes as these messages are asked by the people whom we thought we have lost all connections. It makes us feel good to know that our folks do care for us and we are not alone in this crisis. The pandemic, despite forcing us to stay in our own separate corners, also showed us how intensely we are all interconnected.

The world is changing and so are we and our perspectives. This new lifestyle initially seemed tedious and frustrating. But we are also learning to adapt to these changes. Majority of us started utilising our home as our workspace (a big thanks to the internet). We now have time for our family, for all those hobbies in our profiles which we thought we never had time for.

Schools started online teaching. Artistic people are using the multimedia technology to expose their creativity and talents. Video calls are now frequent and all those joyful, adventurous or embarrassing memories or photos with friends and cousins are now surfing out. Humanity is reborn and we started being considerate towards others. Our planet is healing, pollutions are less, and the usage of plastic have reduced.

The world is changing and so are we and our perspectives.

Moreover, this period taught us a big lesson of how valuable the time is. TIME, its ticking.

Utilising it in a good way or not is in our hands.

We are in this together and this too shall pass.

FAITH FOR A LIFE TIME

SHASHANK JAMADAGNI “Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into light.”

Wow…. Sounds too philosophical isn’t it?? Well, it isn’t. That’s the reason I thought I should put forth my thoughts on the same. Please note that I am no philosoher who has answers to all the questions related to this topic. I will be asking a lot of questions in this article for which I do not have answers myself but I think these are the questions we need to ask ourselves. Given the situation around in the world I felt it’s important for each of us to stay positive and hope that the world becomes a better place to live. This article is just an attempt to make ourselves aware so that we can lead a happy, peaceful and a meaningful life.

I’m sure most of us confuse faith with trust. Trust can be easily broken but faith does last for a lifetime. If it doesn’t then it isn’t faith at all. Faith is all about believing, you don’t know how things can happen but you know that it will. Is this blind? Ya, I guess it is. Blind to believe that no matter what happens, its for our good. I am sure most of us have come across a lot of scenarios in life when we were expecting something else but something else is given to us.

The first thing that comes to our mind is Why?? Why me?? But do we ask the same when we get what we expected? In the latter case we think we deserved it so we got then why can’t we apply the same thought in the former case? Why don’t we think that this is what was best for us given the circumstances and situations?

Trust can be easily broken but faith does last for a lifetime.

I feel that’s because we haven’t understood faith at all. We haven’t yet reached that state. For us it’s all conditional. But faith is unconditional.As a child, we always looked upon our parents and believed that they will save us, protect us from every situation, from holding us if we were about to fall down or saving us from teachers at school.

We always knew they were there and that we can count on them no matter what. Isnt this blind? Then why is it we lose this as we grow up? It’s a question I think its worth asking ourselves.

The world today is going through a huge hit because of the pandemic. This whole situation made me think of the uncertainity of life. But now after months, people have accepted it to be a way of life and moved on. But does that make the situation any better?? No, of course not. FAITH FOR A LIFE TIME Continues.....

I believe truly in the saying “God helps those who help themselves”. One cannot just sit idle and keep hoping for miracles to happen. Our dedication, perseverance ,patience, wilfulness will be rewarded and not just the thought of doing it. Everything in this universe is based on faith. Starting from the position of stars in the universe to our being, its all faith. Even without our knowledge we believe or rather assume a lot of things in our day today activities. It’s all an act of faith. Positivity is just an outcome. I think I can go on and on about it but everything has to come to an end, right? They say “To one who has faith , no explanation is required but to one without faith, no explanation is possible” .Let’s choose our sides right!!

In today’s world where the trust between relationships is so fragile even though its all within our vision limits it’s hard to have faith in something that is beyond what our eyes can perceive right??

May be that’s the reason we believe in His powers and call them miracles.

CRUISE THROUGH NATURE

Let's take a break NARAYAN MOHANDAS This year saw the advent of new practices and though with a little of initial resistance, we have adapted and survived. It would be only appropriate if we could have some time-out in Qatar to expend that built-up energy. Right? We are approaching the merry month of December with a drizzle and what more it brings, is yet to be seen.This part of the year is best suited for some quality time, and a day visit to the beaches with family and friends would be the perfect getaway. It is now that you ring up your old friends and plan a weekend trip out in the open and my sincere suggestion would be to club that trip with a drive to the desert. I am sure you will enjoy the experience.

Always have your phones completely charged and carry a car phone charger or a power bank. Make sure you have a towing cable of good quality and always stand away from the cable while towing/pulling other cars.

Carry one or more pack of water bottles depending on the number of people travelling. Carry light but strong beach chairs as per the number of people, one foldable table and a beach carpet Buy some wood on the way for making a small camp fire and make sure to wrap the wood in a garbage cover as soon as you buy them to avoid them from getting wet in any circumstance, also so that no insect on the wood would enter your vehicle.

A desert drive would seem like a cliché choice to make, however the vast expanse of the beautiful landscape of sand will leave you in a state of tranquil, and we know how hard that blissful feeling is to come by in this busy life. Let me give you a few suggestions on top of the usual that would make your trip a tad easier. Firstly, you will need a 4x4 SUV in good condition. If you don’t have one, probably plan this trip with someone who has and can join you in.

Please install the Ooredoo “Inland sea” application to help you traverse through the easiest terrain or sandy terrain as per your choice. Lastly in case you get stuck somewhere in the desert, you are never away from help and there are many people including locals that will help you out selflessly. All the best and do carry your cameras to shoot great pictures with the picturesque landscape of sand dunes as the background.

MEMBERS' FEEDBACK

I learnt a lot from this platform in regards to improve the public speaking skill and I realized now that I should have joined it before.The meetings gave us a chance to perform any role of our choice like TTM, TMoD, Speaker etc. It gave an opportunity to speak and all members of Parsons Toastmasters are very cooperative and supportive.

I just started the journey with toastmasters, and I feel comfortable and happiness.It helps in team building and the team here is motivating. It also helps to refresh the talents and mind, speaking skills and also to correct my mistakes.

The program gave a positive approach which increased the confidence too.

Parsons Toastmasters reached from 2018 to 2020 with excellent achievements and this says the support given between each members. It is excellent and we got an individual stage to speak

I got chance to get connected with fellow TMs through WhatsApp and all the members are instantly supporting each other. I thank TM Akshay and TM Bilal for introducing me to toastmasters

All the team members are kind and fully cooperative. They give the advice politely and positively guide the member for their mistakes. I see they are happy on getting any request to help, and here I really appreciate all and I feel I am getting better on delivering speeches.

I heard about the toastmasters from one of the colleagues in Parsons. Indeed, a good journey in being part of the toastmasters and enjoying the lively environment every time we meet.Toastmasters increasingly favored the best way to bring a positive dimension to my attitude towards public speaking.Constructive support from the members is extraordinary, and it is paving ways to improve the confidence in the skills that I want to possess through toastmasters.
