Teamwork Makes the Dream Work Around this time of year, I typically like to provide a snapshot of the community over the past year.

In 2023, Avalon Park Orlando has seen significant progress, particularly in our Downtown area. Our core mission remains unwavering: to change the way people live, learn, work, and play.

While there have been noticeable changes, we want to emphasize our ongoing commitment to improving Avalon Park for all.

Below are a few updates on what has been happening and what is on the horizon for Avalon Park in the future:

Hopefully, the temperatures will continue to cool off in the coming months and make outside activities more pleasant for the whole family. It’s the ideal time to embrace the changing seasons and all the joy they bring.

October closes the national Hispanic Heritage Month. In commemoration of this, the Hispanic Heritage Network of Orange County is hosting the end of Hispanic heritage month celebration. This event will showcase the rich diversity of Hispanic culture we have

in Orange County. Delicious food will be provided alongside great entertainment. I encourage everyone interested to attend this event. It will take place from 6pm to 9pm at the Center for Health & Wellbeing in Winter Park (2005 Mizell Ave, Winter Park FL 32792).

FOR THE BARS: - 1 and 1/3 Cup flour - 3/4 Cup granulated sugar, divided - 1/2 Cup light brown sugar - 3/4 Cup butter, softened - 1 Cup oats, uncooked - 1/2 Cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional) - 1 pkg. of cream cheese (8oz.), softened – can be reduced fat - 3 eggs - 1 can (15 oz) pumpkin - 1 T pumpkin pie spice FOR THE TOPPING (Mix & Set Aside): - 1/3 Cup flour - 1/4 Cup butter, softened - 1/3 Cup oats - 1/4 Cup light brown sugar - 1/4 Cup chopped pecan or walnuts (optional)

DIRECTIONS: - Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F. - Line the back of a 13×9 inch pan with foil with ends of foil extending over sides and spray with cooking spray - Mix flour, brown sugar, 1/4 Cup sugar and softened butter in a medium bowl until blended. Mix in oats and nuts (if desired) - Press oat mixture onto bottom of the prepared pan.

- Bake for 15 min -Beat softened cream cheese, remaining sugar, eggs, pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice with a mixer until well blended. Pour over crust. Sprinkle with crumb topping.

- Bake for 25 min at 350 F. Cool on a wire rack in pan. Once completely cooled, pull the sides of the foil to release the pumpkin pie bars from the pan and cut into squares.

FusionFest Announces the 2023 MYgration Film Competition

The MYgration films will premiere as part of the annual Global Peace Film Festival on September 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rollins College Bush Auditorium, where attendees can vote for their favorite movies.

FusionFest, in partnership with the Global Peace Film Festival, today announced the 2023 MYgration Film Competition, an opportunity for filmmakers to share stories of migration, perspectives, and cultural intertwining. This annual competition seeks to capture the stories of Central Floridians from around the world in short five-minute documentary films. The films will be either from the perspective of a filmmaker’s migration journey or from a subject allowing a filmmaker to portray their experiences.

The MYgration Film Screening and Award Presentation will take place at the Enzian Theatre on October 1, 2023, at 12:30 p.m. with the announcement of the 2023 MYgration Film Competition winners. Awards will include an Audience Choice winner, a Grand Prize, and a Student Prize. Prizes range from $200 – $1000.

Before the Awards Presentation, FusionFest’s weekly talk show, Diverse Orange, will film live from the red carpet at the premiere. Tickets are available at https://www.fusionfest.org/ mygration-films-premiere.

In August, filmmakers and subjects were paired and had just five days to produce the film and submit the final reel for judging by a FusionFest panel. The 2023 MYgration film competition resulted in eleven entries.

Stronger Together: A Joint Initiative by the Rotary Club of Avalon Park and East Orange County Kiwanis Club in honor of local First Responders on 9/11 In a world that often seems increasingly divided, the spirit of unity and community thrived in the east part of town this 9/11. Twenty-two years after a day that changed our lives, the Rotary Club of Avalon Park joined forces with the East Orange County Kiwanis Club. Together, they honored our local heroes, the first responders, through a partnered initiative on that day.
