Avalon Park Group Commits to Open 250-Acre Regional Park in East Orange County in 2027
Ask almost anyone why they chose to call East Orange County home, and the answers are usually the same: the schools, the community and the people. East Orange County is a place where people feel a deep sense of belonging and safety.
Over the past 25 years, East Orange County has become one of Central Florida’s great success stories. Families have planted roots, businesses have invested, and together, we have built a community where people are proud to call home.
But great communities are never finished. They continue investing in what comes next.
Now, we believe it is time for the next chapter.
Avalon Park Group is committing to creating an approximately 250-acre regional park and athletic complex that will serve East Orange County for generations to come. The goal is to make several athletic fields available to the community as early as next year by working with state, regional and local entities to ensure timely completion.
“This community has always accomplished its biggest goals by working together,” said Beat Kahli, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Avalon Park Group. “The partnerships that helped create outstanding schools and thriving communities can also create a regional park that serves families for generations.”
One of the best examples of this type of arrangement is the schools in Avalon Park. Through partnerships among Orange County Public Schools, local government, Avalon Park Group, educators, and families, every one of Avalon Park’s schools has earned an A rating, with two recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools.
Traditionally, parks and athletic complexes are built with public financing, as in Seminole County, City of Apopka, Orange County and elsewhere. As local governments struggle with increased costs and accusations of wasteful spending, this plan is
not dependent on any financial commitment from Orange County.
“This park will not ask for Tourist Development Tax dollars, and it will not ask Orange County taxpayers to fund it,” said Kahli. “Those funds have their own purposes and their own pressures. What East Orange County needs is a model that delivers without competing for money that is already spoken for.”
Instead, this park’s success is based on the 30-year track record of Avalon Park Group’s multifaceted portfolio of companies that call Orange County home and through the more than $20 million in property taxes its community, Avalon Park Orlando, pays every year.
“For 20 years, a regional park has been promised and planned, but never delivered,” said Kahli. “It is time for a different model, and Avalon Park Group is ready to lead the effort to bring this vision to reality.”
That long-term vision reaches far beyond athletic fields. While soccer, football, volleyball, cricket, baseball and more will be available, Avalon Park Group believes that walking trails, playgrounds, wellness amenities, and community gathering spaces are all part of the conversation.

Coffee with Beat
this game-changing project. Now it is time to move from planning to implementation. We want to make sure our children can play on dozens of soccer, baseball, football, softball, and other athletic fields beginning next year, followed by additional large-scale amenities that the community wants and our region deserves.
Within just 30 years, East Orange County and Avalon Park have become one of the most desirable places to live, learn, work, and play. We have built a community with a strong sense of belonging, safety, and opportunity.
From 100 cows in the middle of nowhere, we have become a model town for how people can live, learn, work, and play in America.
None of this progress happened by accident, and none of what comes next will happen on its own. The regional park is one project among many that will require political leadership that understands East Orange County, listens to the people who live here, and has the experience to move good ideas from concept to completion.
That need for leadership is a separate matter from the park, and it is a larger one. The decisions made in Orange County over the next several years will shape housing, transportation, public safety, education, and economic opportunity for every family in our region. East Orange County has earned representation equal to its growth, and that is what is on the ballot this year.
While I respectfully ask you to vote for two outstanding and experienced candidates in the elections on August 18 and November 3 (please see page 3 for our Non-Partisan Voter Guide), I do so only after my team and I have spent many hours meeting with candidates for public office in Orange County and beyond. We have involved community leaders and subject matter experts in the process, and we have used the best research and analytical tools available to help guide our decisions.
For East Orange County’s continued success, our extensive and thoughtful evaluation has resulted in the following endorsements:
STEPHANIE MURPHY FOR MAYOR OF ORANGE COUNTY
JOHANNA LOPEZ FOR ORANGE COUNTY COMMISSIONER, DISTRICT 4
STEPHANIE MURPHY
In more than 30 years, I have met with countless politicians in Orange County seeking advice and asking for support for their respective campaigns.
In all those years, I have never met anyone better qualified for the locally most important elected office, Mayor of Orange County, than Stephanie Murphy.
I have observed Stephanie carefully analyze the needs of our community and develop thoughtful, detailed, and practical solutions. I have attended meetings with her alongside elected officials, citizens, local business leaders, and national business leaders.
I have witnessed firsthand the passion, integrity, and exceptional ability Stephanie Murphy possesses to serve Orange County as its next Mayor.
In a short time, Stephanie and her family have also become good friends of my wife, Jill, and me.
Thank you for helping Orange County and Avalon Park continue their journey to becoming one of the best places in America by giving your vote to Stephanie Murphy on August 18.
JOHANNA LOPEZ
Johanna is well known to our community as a former Avalon Park resident, a former Orange County School Board member, and a current member of the Florida House of Representatives.
Her experience and proven results in both local and state government make her uniquely qualified to help advance the dreams and needs of East Orange County.
Johanna has spent many hours with our community. She understands the vision for Orange County, and especially East Orange County, extremely well.
My team and I have met with Johanna many times, and I have always been impressed by her energy, knowledge, and passion for public service.
Please allow Johanna to serve as our District 4 Orange County Commissioner by giving her your vote. Thank you. *Some
Avalon Park Group Commits to Open 250-Acre Regional Park in East Orange County in 2027 (Continued)
That said, the regional park will also work to become a national destination, looking to grow our region’s successful economic development efforts through amateur sports.
However, the final plan will be shaped by the people who will use it. Residents, athletic organizations, schools, homeowner associations, businesses, and civic leaders will be invited to help define the park through surveys and community meetings.
The need is clear.
East Orange County continues to welcome thousands of new residents each year, yet recreational infrastructure has not kept pace.
Every weekend, local families travel across Central Florida so their children can play soccer, football or baseball, compete in volleyball tournaments, run track, play cricket, and participate in other activities because quality regional facilities are not available close to home.
“Our families spend countless hours traveling because quality athletic facilities have not kept pace with the incredible growth of East Orange County,” said Dave Weiser, Executive Director of the East Orlando Knights Soccer Club. “A regional park is about much more than sports. It gives children more opportunities close to home while creating a destination the entire community can enjoy.”
That need extends well beyond youth athletics.
“I have watched Avalon Park grow from open land into a thriving community filled with families, schools, businesses, and civic organizations,” said Brenda Kolbrich, longtime Avalon Park community advocate. “The next step is ensuring that our public spaces and recreational opportunities grow with us. A regional park would give residents of every age a place to connect, stay active, and continue building the community spirit that makes East Orange County special.”
“Community parks are about so much more than playgrounds and walking trails. They become the heart of a neighborhood, providing a place where families gather, children play, neighbors connect, and community traditions are built. For far too long, East Orange County has been underserved when it comes to accessible public parks, despite the tremendous growth our area has experienced,” said Stephanie Chandrasekaran, Realtor and President of the Stoneybrook Homeowners Association. “Investing in parks is an investment in the health, quality of life, and long-term strength of a community. Every resident deserves access to welcoming public spaces that encourage recreation, foster relationships, and create a stronger sense of belonging for generations to come.”
“Our residents have been clear that they want more opportunities to gather, exercise, play sports, and enjoy the outdoors without having to leave East Orange County,” said Angie Smith Gerard, Board Member of the Avalon Park Property Owners Association. “A park of this scale would serve our children today while creating an important community asset for generations to come.”
Like every major public investment in Avalon Park’s history, this project will depend on strong partnerships. While tax dollars are not needed to bring this to life, success will require
collaboration among the State of Florida, Orange County and neighboring jurisdictions, community organizations, residents, athletic associations, and the private sector.
“As a mom, I have seen firsthand how important parks, trails, and athletic fields are for children and families. But too many parents spend hours driving across the region because recreational spaces have not kept pace with our county’s growth. East Orange County deserves the kind of parks and recreational opportunities that reflect the incredible community it has become,” said Stephanie Murphy, candidate for Orange County Mayor. “As mayor, I will support partnerships that expand access to quality recreational opportunities, while ensuring every investment is made transparently and in the best interest of Orange County residents.”
“Our community has demonstrated time and again what is possible when people come together around a shared vision,” said State Representative Johanna Lopez, candidate for Orange County Commission District 4. “This initiative is another opportunity for local government, residents, and private partners to build something that will benefit East Orange County families for generations. If elected, our county government will stop promising a park and work to make it a reality. I support moving this effort forward and ensuring that the community has a strong voice throughout the process.”
Work is already underway to identify the specific site and build the partnerships necessary to move the project forward.
Finalizing the location will require cooperation across jurisdictions and a shared commitment from local leadership. The goal is to find a convenient location near restaurants and other amenities, but one that is separated from surrounding neighborhoods by substantial landscaped buffers and berms, limiting its visibility and potential noise issues from residential areas.
Regional parks create places where children discover new passions, neighbors become friends, grandparents walk with grandchildren, and tournaments introduce visitors to local businesses. They strengthen communities in ways that extend far beyond recreation. The leaders featured here represent only a handful of those who have already expressed support. More than a dozen local athletic organizations, homeowner associations, community leaders, and residents have shared the same sentiment: East Orange County is ready for a regional park.
Avalon Park Group is committed to leading the effort.
The community is ready to help shape it. Now it is time to bring together the public and private partners needed to turn the vision into reality. Because the next great chapter of East Orange County will not be built by one organization. It will be built together.
From the Desk of Commissioner Maribel Gomez Cordero Back to School: A New Year of Opportunities
As summer comes to a close, we welcome a new school year filled with fresh opportunities for learning, growth, and success. Back-to-school season is an exciting time for students, parents, teachers, and our entire community as we prepare to support the next generation.
Whether your child is entering kindergarten, starting middle school, or preparing for their final year of high school, establishing healthy routines and staying engaged in their education can make a meaningful difference throughout the year. I encourage families to take time to talk with their children about their goals, celebrate their achievements, and remind them that every new school year is a chance to learn, grow, and dream bigger.
To help families prepare, Orange County Commission District 4 is proud to partner with the Community & Family Services Department to host our Back-to-School Fair on Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Cypress Creek High School. The event will provide valuable resources for families, including immunizations, mentoring, tutoring, counseling, after-school programming, neighborhood safety information, and many other community resources. We encourage parents to pre-register and bring the required documentation for immunizations.
As we prepare for the new school year, I also want to remind everyone that hurricane season is still underway. Now is the perfect time to review your family’s emergency plan, restock your disaster supply kit, and stay informed about weather updates. Being prepared today can help keep your loved ones safe tomorrow.
Finally, I would like to remind you that my District 4 Satellite Office is open to serve residents on the first Wednesday of every month from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the East Orange Community Center. Whether you have a concern, need assistance with County services, or
simply want to share your ideas, my team and I are here to help. You are welcome to schedule an appointment or stop by during office hours.
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving District 4. My team and I wish every student, teacher, and family a wonderful school year filled with learning, achievement, and endless possibilities.
Blessings, Commissioner Maribel Gomez Cordero Orange County District 4

Back to School, Back in Motion: A Family Fitness Guide for the Avalon Park Community
The backpacks are out, the supply lists are on the fridge, and summer’s easy pace is about to speed up fast. For Avalon Park families, back to school season means a whole new household routine, not just a new schedule for the kids.
Good news: a little planning goes a long way, and this August there’s extra motivation to start fresh. Avalon Park Gym is offering a $1 joining fee for new members all month long.
Your Quick Reset Guide
Rebuild sleep schedules first. Shift bedtimes and wake ups back toward the school routine about a week ahead, for the kids and for you too.
Claim your workout window now. Once carpool lines and homework take over, “I’ll find time” tends to disappear. Block out three or four windows this week and treat them like real appointments.
Make movement a family thing. A walk after dinner or a weekend bike ride teaches kids that exercise is just part of life, not a chore.
Prep meals like you prep lunches. Put that same Sunday night energy toward your own food.
Protect one recovery day. Between new schedules and classroom germs, bodies need rest more than ever right now.
Fast Fitness Tips
• Shorten sessions, not consistency. A focused 30 minute workout beats a skipped hour long one.
• Use the carpool wait for a quick set of squats or a walk around the block.
• Hydrate like it’s homework, for you and the kids.
• Stretch shoulders and hips before backpacks go on, parents included.
• Track small wins to stay motivated when the calendar gets busy.
Rooted in the Avalon Park Community
Fitness here doesn’t happen in a bubble. A few community moments to know about:
• Back to School Bash at Encore at Avalon Park, Saturday, August 1st, 10 AM to 12 PM at 13798 Cygnus Drive. Free school supplies, a dunk tank, face painting, and community vendors.
• The Metabolic Intensive at The 5th Floor Orlando, a six week wellness series running Saturdays, August 22 through September 26. A great reset for parents after a busy summer.
• Weekly trivia nights at the Marketplace keep the neighborhood connected once school routines settle in. Avalon Park Gym is proud to be part of a neighborhood that treats wellness as a shared effort. We’re here to help your family start the year strong.
Ready to Start Strong?
All through August, new members can join Avalon Park Gym for just $1 (offer valid August 1 to 31, 2026, new members only, subject to change without notice). Add on family members ages 8 and up and get the whole household training together.
Stop by 12001 Avalon Lake Drive, Suite M-P, or call (407) 988-3884 to lock in the $1 joining fee. New to group fitness? There’s no better time to try something new. Check out our full class schedule and find one that fits right into your new routine.
Fostering Community All Summer Long
Summer at Encore at Avalon Park has centered on connection, and that spirit carries straight through to a highly anticipated event this fall. Encore continues to bring residents and the surrounding community together through shared experiences, and the momentum shows no signs of slowing down.
Alice in Wonderland Grandparent’s Day Tea
Encore invites residents and the greater community to a whimsical Grandparent’s Day celebration inspired by Alice in Wonderland. The tea takes place on Sunday, September 13 at 2:00 PM at Encore at Avalon Park, located at 13798 Cygnus Dr, Orlando, FL 32828. General admission costs $15 per person, and Encore residents attend free of charge (must still secure a ticket). The event welcomes the entire community, and guests can look forward to an afternoon filled with tea, treats, and storybook charm honoring the special bond between grandparents and their families.
Encore also seeks sponsors for this event. Businesses and community partners interested in supporting this celebration should reach out for more information on sponsorship opportunities. Contact our team today at marketing@ avalonparkgroup.com to learn how to get involved.
Building Community Through Connection
This summer, Encore focused on fostering community among residents through shared activities and meaningful partnerships. A recent highlight brought residents together for an afternoon with some furry friends. Volunteers from Doglando brought their foster dogs to socialize with residents at Encore. Events like these reflect Encore’s ongoing commitment to keeping residents engaged, active, and connected to the world around them.
More Creative Programming on the Horizon
The fun does not stop with tea and community gatherings. Encore has begun exploring an exciting new collaboration that will bring hands-on art programming to residents later this summer. Details continue to come together, but residents and the community alike can look forward to a creative opportunity that blends artistic expression with the same spirit of connection that has defined Encore’s summer programming so far.
Stay connected with Encore at Avalon Park for more updates on the Grandparent’s Day Tea, sponsorship opportunities, and upcoming creative programming this season.

LEARN Digital Citizenship and Safe Social Media Usage
By: The East Orlando Youth Advisory Board Member, Emily Rae Pasteur
Technology and the internet are a huge part of our lives. We use it almost every day, whether it’s for entertainment, work, communication, or personal use. However, there are many downsides to using the internet. Some being that it can lead to mental health issues like poor sleep, depression, body image issues from comparing ourselves to others, anxiety, and along with many others.
There are also many privacy concerns when it comes to using the internet, so it is best to know how to safely use it and know what’s okay to share and what isn’t. Informing others about digital citizenship allows for the internet to be a safer place.
What is Digital Citizenship?
Digital citizenship is the ability to navigate the digital environment in a way that allows users to be safe and responsible and to actively and respectfully engage in these spaces. It also refers to the ability to protect any private information and lessen the risks of getting cyberbullied and any online threats. This means being respectful and being mindful of our actions online. What we say on the internet can have an impact in the real world. If we are not mindful about what is said on the internet, it may affect our reputation and may lead to others getting hurt. That is why it is our role to play as an active digital citizen, which means working to ensure that you are contributing to the well-being of our communities and allowing for a positive space.
Staying Safe Online
When using the internet, there are always things you need to watch for, and it should always be remembered that the internet is a public place,
meaning that anyone can find what you post and your digital footprint. This is why we need to limit the amount of personal information that is put online, like refraining from using things that can make you vulnerable, like your address, what school you go to, your schedule, and more. Always be considerate when posting information online; even if you delete it, there is still a way for it to be retrieved. When having an account on social media, you should always be aware of strangers online, as they could be dangerous and have certain motives. If you do interact with strangers, be cautious about how much and what information you are giving them. You should also be careful about what you read online because not everything is true. People may post advertisements or information that is fake and may lead to you being scammed. Take the appropriate precautions and verify any information before taking action or listening to what they say. Also be careful about the things you click because it may lead to your device getting a virus and leading to many issues. This is also why it is important to use anti-virus software that works and helps to protect your device from viruses. It also allows you to detect and remove the virus before it does any damage to your device. People online are constantly making new viruses, so it’s important to keep your anti-virus software up to date.
Having a strong password is also a very important key detail when it comes to safely using social media. You do not want people to easily be able to guess your password, as it can lead to many of your accounts getting hacked and thus leading to you losing your accounts. When making a password, it should be a unique and complex password that includes numbers, symbols, and letters. If possible, you should have twofactor authentication that allows for an extra layer of protection and can prevent more people from getting into your account and can prevent any unauthorized logins if your password does get found out.
As you continue navigating the online world, remember that you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. At L.O.V.E. Our Youth, we’re committed to helping teens build the confidence, awareness, and skills they need to stay safe, make informed choices, and use technology in positive ways. Whether you’re learning how to protect your privacy, engage respectfully, or support others online, we’re here to empower you every step of the way.

20 Local Students Explore STEAM Careers at Electronic Arts Summer Camp
Twenty Central Florida students are exploring science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) career pathways and receiving mentorship from the professionals behind some of the world’s most recognizable sports video games through Electronic Arts’ (EA) free Get in the Game STEAM Camp, scheduled for July 17-24.
Hosted at EA’s studio in downtown Orlando’s Creative Village – home to the development teams behind EA SPORTS College Football and Madden NFL – Get in the Game is part of EA’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to STEAM education and helping build the future technology workforce in Central Florida.
Since launching in 2018, the program has evolved into a proven talent pipeline for homegrown technological talent, with several alumni securing internships and fulltime careers at EA.
“This camp is one of our favorite outreach programs each year because we finish the week so inspired by the creativity and talent of our local students,” said Jocel Boney, director of strategic programs and community relations at EA Tiburon. “Students already have the passion. Our goal is to help them build connections, confidence and a clearer pathway toward a career in this industry.”
Over the course of the week, Get in the Game students participate in coding lessons led by Ron Weaver, technical design director at the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy (FIEA) at the University of Central Florida, and receive coaching and mentorship from EA team members. Students also participate in workshops and demonstrations led by EA professionals that offer a behind-the-scenes look at EA’s technology and the creative processes behind fan-favorite EA SPORTS franchises.
The camp culminates in a games showcase featuring student-built projects developed during the week. Upon completing the program, students will receive a complimentary laptop preloaded with the coding software used throughout the camp, enabling them to continue growing their skills.
“When I participated in this program back in 2019, it was the first time I began to see that a career in the industry could be a reality for me,” said Rachel Dauns, a former camp participant who later interned with EA and now works full-time as a Software Engineer on EA SPORTS Madden NFL. “The experience helped open doors for me that transformed my interest in STEAM to a real career.”
Several past participants are interning at EA this summer and will join Get in the Game programming throughout the week, including a panel titled “Interning at EA” to share their experiences. All alumni are invited back to the studio on the final day of the program for the games showcase to celebrate with students and reconnect with their cohort and EA employees.
The 2026 program drew more than 100 applicants from more than 30 local schools. Students were selected by a volunteer-committee of EA professionals based on STEAM coursework, extracurricular experience, project samples, and essays reflecting a passion for careers in the industry.

Family Recipes, Family Stories: Creating Memories One Meal at a Time
What is your family’s favorite lunch?
Every family has a recipe that brings back memories. Maybe it’s a favorite sandwich, a special soup, or a meal that has been shared around the table for years. These recipes are more than just food, they are stories that connect us to the people we love.
This month, I encourage families to celebrate those special recipes by capturing the memories behind them. A family recipe can tell us where we come from, who taught us, and the moments we never want to forget.
Family Recipe & Story Challenge
Create your own Family Recipes & Stories Book using a notebook, scrapbook, Canva, or any format your family enjoys.
Choose a favorite recipe and ask:
- What is the name of this recipe?
- Who taught our family this recipe?
- Why is this recipe special?
- What memory does this meal bring back?
Add a photo, drawing, or special note to complete your family story. Remember, the goal is not perfection; it’s preserving the moments that make your family unique.
Learning Happens Everywhere
Did you know the kitchen can be a place where children build literacy skills?
When children help read and create recipes, they practice:
- Reading directions
- Learning new vocabulary
- Following steps in order
-Measuring and using math skills
- Writing and sharing stories
Learning does not only happen in a classroom. It happens while creating, exploring, and connecting with the people we love.
Creating, Learning, and Growing Together
At Creatively Influenced, I believe learning should inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence.
Through literacy experiences, creative learning activities, technology workshops, Canva classes, and personalized learning support, I help children and adults discover new ways to learn, create, and grow. Families can explore more learning experiences, creative activities, and resources designed to encourage learning at home by visiting www. creativelyinfluenced.com and following Creatively Influenced Learning for fun ideas you can enjoy with your child.
Because learning is more than gaining knowledge, it is about building confidence, sparking creativity, and discovering what is possible.

Where Are They Now: Revisiting the Entrepreneurs that Helped Launch The 5th Floor
“When the world was closing its doors, we decided to open one. Investing in these entrepreneurs was never charity. It was partnership. They helped bring The 5th Floor to life just as much as we helped them, and that shared success is what a real community is built on.”
— Beat Kahli, President and Chief Executive Officer, Avalon Park Group
When the world shut down in the spring of 2020, most businesses were bracing for the worst. Avalon Park Group chose a different response. Rather than pull back, President and Chief Executive Officer Beat Kahli committed more than one million dollars to a new Entrepreneur Fund, created specifically to help local business owners survive, adapt, and grow through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The idea was simple but bold: when a good idea only needs someone else to believe in it, be that someone. What followed was a remarkable show of community ambition. From one hundred fifty-three initial submissions, an international jury narrowed the field to twenty-eight finalists. Award packages were personalized for every one of them, combining cash investments, business loans, office space, professional consulting services, and memberships at The 5th Floor, the international co-working space and business incubator housed in the Avalon Innovation Center.
There was another side to that story. At the very moment offices around the world were going dark, Avalon Park Group was preparing to open one. The 5th Floor Orlando was coming to life just as the pandemic took hold, and filling it with driven, creative entrepreneurs did not only help those founders. It helped bring the space itself to life. The support ran in both directions. That kind of reciprocity, where a smart partnership creates a genuine win for everyone involved, is exactly what the strongest business communities are built on.
The recipients spanned five categories, from Innovator and Enterprise awards to Collaborator, Connector, and a special Community award. Behind each name was a founder with a plan and, in many cases, very little certainty about what the months ahead would hold.
Now, several years later, we think it is worth asking a simple question: where are they now?
Beginning this month, the Avalon Park Sun will run a monthly feature revisiting the entrepreneurs and companies that received support from the 5th Floor Entrepreneur Fund. We will catch up with founders who took that early investment and built something lasting, share the lessons they learned along the way, and celebrate the ways they continue to shape our community and beyond. Some have expanded, some have pivoted, and some have gone on to earn recognition well past the borders of Avalon Park. Every one of them has a story worth telling.
First up: Julie Kostic and JK Creative We are proud to launch the series with one of the fund’s
Innovator Award recipients, Julie Kostic, the award-winning designer behind JK Creative.
Founded in 2016, JK Creative is a graphic design and marketing agency that helps brands of every size tell their story more effectively. From branding and logos to websites, packaging, print collateral, social media, and marketing strategy, Julie and her team have created work for clients across food and beverage, retail, wellness, real estate, government, technology, nonprofit, and more. The studio calls The 5th Floor in Avalon Park home, with a satellite office in Baltimore, Maryland.
What has happened since 2020 is exactly the kind of momentum the fund was designed to spark. JK Creative has grown its team, broadened its client base, and collected a string of honors along the way. It is a fitting place to begin a series about what becomes possible when a community decides to invest in its own.
Later this month, we will sit down with Julie for a full interview about the early days of JK Creative, what that vote of confidence meant during the pandemic, and where she is taking the studio next. It also marks a milestone for us: the inaugural edition of the Avalon Park Sun video interview series. Stay tuned for the full conversation, which will be shared across our social media channels and on The 5th Floor Orlando and Avalon Park Orlando websites.

A Decade of Design, Built on a Leap of Faith
Where Are They Now returns to the 2020 The 5th Floor Innovation Awards, starting with JK Creative founder Julie Kostic.
This year, Julie Kostic is marking a milestone: ten years in business. The Founder and Chief Creative Officer of JK Creative has spent the past decade building a boutique design and marketing agency known for strategic, relationship-driven work, and that anniversary makes her a fitting first subject for the Avalon Park Sun’s new Where Are They Now series. The series revisits recipients of the 5th Floor Innovation Awards, Avalon Park Group’s 2020 initiative to help local entrepreneurs weather an uncertain moment and build something that would last.
From a kitchen table to an award-winning agency
Ten years ago, Kostic took what she describes as a leap of faith. After nearly a decade at creative agencies and inhouse roles with brands such as Under Armour and Walden University, she wanted to work with a wider variety of clients and tell their stories through strategic design. So, she started JK Creative at her kitchen table with a laptop, a great deal of determination, and, in her words, “a healthy dose of I will figure it out.”
Like most entrepreneurs, she quickly learned that owning a business meant wearing every hat. What began as a one-woman business working with small companies and nonprofits has since grown into an awardwinning, certified woman-owned agency.
A vote of confidence when it mattered most In 2019, Kostic relocated JK Creative from Maryland to Florida and scaled back while rebuilding her network in a new community. Her plan for 2020 was to get out, meet people, and grow. Then the world paused. “By the summer we had almost no new work coming in,” she recalled. Having just arrived in Orlando with few local connections, she found herself wondering whether she would have to close her doors.
It was in the pages of the Avalon Park Sun that Kostic found the application for the 5th Floor Innovation Awards. “I have always believed you cannot win if you do not try,” she said. When she learned she had received one of the top honors, an Innovator Award, she was stunned. The award combined funding, office space at The 5th Floor, professional consulting, and a membership, but the greatest gift, she said, was the confidence it represented.
“I honestly do not know if JK Creative would still be here today. The Innovation Award gave me more than financial support. It gave me hope at a time when I needed it most, and I truly believe that vote of confidence changed the trajectory of JK Creative.”
Where they are now
The years since have brought remarkable growth. What was once a team of one is now a group of full-time employees and trusted freelance partners. JK Creative has partnered with organizations such as the American Cancer Society and the Adirondack Mountain Club, along with many Orlandoarea businesses, and has expanded into video editing, search engine optimization, and social media influencer events, all while maintaining a Baltimore presence that keeps it connected to longtime Maryland clients. Kostic has also appeared on Season 4 of The Blox docuseries, joined the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, and won last year’s NAWBO PropelHER Pitch Competition.
Although JK Creative is celebrating a full decade, its home at The 5th Floor belongs to the more recent chapters of that story. Kostic has been a member since her 2020 award, roughly six years, and she credits the community with helping her put down roots in Central Florida. “It introduced me to an incredible community of entrepreneurs,” she said. “Many of those connections are still part of my life and business today, as clients, collaborators, and friends.”
Looking
ahead
The future, Kostic says, is all about intentional growth while staying true to the boutique, relationship-focused approach that has always defined JK Creative. This year, that includes anniversary celebrations, community givebacks, and a national speaking engagement at the PRSA ICON Conference. Her advice to entrepreneurs reflects the decade behind her: “Do not wait until everything is perfect. Start with what you have, invest in relationships, and stay flexible.”
This is only the beginning of Julie’s story. In the coming weeks Julie will share more about her vision for JK Creative, offers marketing tips that local businesses can put to use, and opens up about who she is beyond the work, both as a creative and as a proud member of the Avalon Park community in our inaugural video interview.

Orange County Expands Technology for Permitting Services with FastQ, AI Customer Support
Orange County is expanding its digital permitting services with new technology designed to make the process faster, easier, and more convenient for Development Services customers.
The latest enhancement is FastQ, a new appointment scheduling system developed in-house by Orange County Development Services. FastQ simplifies how customers connect with permitting staff, making it easier to schedule appointments and access services.
FastQ allows customers to schedule informational appointments in person, by phone, or through online video conferencing, depending on the service requested. When making an appointment, customers can also provide a permit number, property address, or a description of their question, allowing staff to prepare in advance and provide more efficient service. The new system also offers greater scheduling flexibility, integrates directly with the County’s existing software, and replaces a third-party vendor platform.
“Our goal is to put the customer first and make the permitting process as accessible, efficient, and userfriendly as possible,” said Alan C. Plante, manager of the Orange County Division of Building Safety. “FastQ
and many other recent Fast Track enhancements give our customers more convenient ways to obtain information, manage their permitting and inspection needs, and connect with our team.”
FastQ is the latest in a series of technology improvements aimed at enhancing customer service. Earlier this year, Building Safety introduced an AI-powered phone assistant to answer permit and inspection questions more quickly. Other recent enhancements include an online tool that helps contractors maintain their licenses and required documentation, as well as the ability for customers to pay fees without logging into the permitting system.
Building Safety is part of the County’s Planning, Environmental, and Development Services Department. The Department is guided by an awardwinning Strategic Management Plan that focuses on improving customer service, streamlining processes, and enhancing communication over the next five years.
For assistance with FastQ, call 407-836-8160 or email FastTrackPermittingHelpDesk@ocfl.net.
To try out the AI Assistant, call 407-836-5550.

Second Harvest Honors Volunteers at Annual Awards Presentation
Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida recently recognized dozens of volunteers for their contributions to the organization and its mission to fight hunger.
Between July 2025 and June 2026, 46,433 individuals provided 139,608 hours of service to feed hope across Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida’s sevencounty service area.
Every year, Second Harvest honors volunteers, and on July 24, food bank leaders presented awards to those who made extraordinary efforts. The 2026 Volunteer Award recipients are:
Harold “Coach” Sauter, Kissimmee, honored with the David Pearlman Spirit of Volunteerism Award. Since devoting his time to Second Harvest in 2020, he has become one of the organization’s most dependable volunteer captains, serving in warehouse projects, special events and community outreach efforts. Affectionately known as “Coach,” Harold leads with encouragement, positivity and a servant’s heart, inspiring both volunteers and staff through his unwavering commitment to help others.
Yolanda McLeod Terry, Orlando, recipient of the Going Above & Beyond Award for her exceptional leadership and commitment to Second Harvest’s mission. As a member of the Board of Directors and through her employer, Bank of America, Yolanda has supported volunteer projects in the warehouse, Mercy Kitchen, Hunger Never Sleeps and Ultimate Garden Party. Her willingness to lead by example has encouraged others to get involved and strengthen the fight against hunger across Central Florida.
“The true impact of our volunteers isn’t measured in hours – it’s measured in the lives they help change,” said Derrick Chubbs, president and CEO at Second Harvest. “By giving their time and talents, these honorees are helping build a stronger, healthier Central Florida where more families have access to the food they need. We are proud to recognize their service and grateful for the example they set.”

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
5. Is it FUN? — an Avalon Park favorite.
Working Together for the Future of OCPS MEET THE CANDIDATES
One of the greatest responsibilities of serving on the Orange County School Board is making difficult decisions while keeping our community informed. As we prepare for another school year, I want to share why this year’s budget and employee negotiations have been especially challenging.
Like school districts across Florida, Orange County Public Schools is facing declining student enrollment, changes in state funding, and significant increases in healthcare costs. Because OCPS is self-insured, rising medical and prescription costs have placed tremendous pressure on our budget. Every additional dollar spent on healthcare is a dollar that cannot be invested in employee compensation, classrooms, student programs, school safety, or other critical priorities.
These financial realities have contributed to our current contract negotiations and the declaration of impasse. An impasse is not a breakdown in communication or a lack of respect. It is a legal step in Florida’s collective bargaining process when the parties cannot reach agreement after negotiating in good faith. An independent special magistrate will review the remaining issues and make
recommendations before the School Board considers final action in a public meeting.
I have tremendous respect for our teachers, support staff, administrators, and every employee who serves our students each day. They are the foundation of our schools, and they deserve both competitive compensation and quality healthcare benefits. At the same time, the School Board has a responsibility to ensure that today’s decisions remain financially sustainable so we can continue supporting employees and students for years to come.
Despite these challenges, OCPS continues to make meaningful progress. Our students are achieving at high levels, we continue expanding career and technical education opportunities, and our graduation rate remains strong. Those successes reflect the dedication of our employees, families, and community.
I remain committed to making thoughtful, fact-based decisions, listening carefully to all perspectives, and serving our community with transparency and integrity. I will continue providing updates throughout this process because our community deserves to understand not only the decisions we make, but the reasons behind them.
