Over in the Marketplace at Avalon Park, The Humble Crumb has opened its doors. The new bakery specializes in sourdough and also serves coffee, making it a natural stop for a morning cup and a fresh loaf to take home. The Humble Crumb is welcoming customers during its soft opening, with a Grand Opening celebration planned for Saturday, Oct. 24. As Halloween approaches, families can put on their costumes and head to Founder’s Square on Saturday, Oct. 17, for the Collective Corner Halloweentown Market and Movie. In last month’s column, I shared a little about my father in Switzerland. He is in good physical health, but he is living with memory loss. For me and my family, this is something very personal.

Many of you have similar experiences. A parent, a spouse, a friend or a neighbor begins to have difficulty with their memory. Families find themselves facing questions they may never have considered before. What comes next? Where can we find help? How can we best care for someone we love?

join the Orlando Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Lake Eola. I would like to personally invite you to walk with us or support our team with a donation. The walk is the beginning of a much larger effort. Over the next year, you will see our partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association incorporated into different Avalon Park events and festivals. These gatherings already bring thousands of people together. They give us a wonderful opportunity to share information, introduce resources and raise funds for research, care and support. A family enjoying a festival may also learn where to turn for help with a parent’s memory loss. A local business may find a way to support fundraising. A resident may learn more about brain health and steps that can help reduce the risk of cognitive decline. These are practical ways our community can contribute.

Autumn at Encore

The Power of Art and Memory at Encore Memory is at the heart of everything Encore at Avalon Park does. As a community dedicated to assisted living and memory care, Encore understands that connection does not always require words. For many residents living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, art becomes a bridge, a way to express, engage, and connect even as memory changes.

Why Art Matters in Memory Care Art projects can create a sense of accomplishment and purpose, giving both residents and caregivers an opportunity for self-expression. Unlike conversation, which can become more difficult as dementia progresses, art-making engages different parts of the brain, allowing residents to stay present without the pressure of finding the right words. At Encore, this understanding shapes how activities are designed. Effective art activities for residents in the middle to late stages of Alzheimer’s keep the project at an adult level, build conversation into the experience through encouragement and reminiscence, and allow residents as much time as they need, without the expectation of finishing in one sitting. Sometimes, a caregiver may need to help start the first brush stroke, but from there, the resident leads the way. A Moment of Expression, A Moment of Connection For residents, an afternoon of painting is rarely just about the finished piece. It is about the conversation that happens alongside it, the memories that surface, and the quiet sense of purpose that comes from

creating something with one’s own hands. These moments matter deeply in a memory care setting, where connection often looks different than it once did, but is no less meaningful. Encore’s Commitment to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s This understanding of art’s role in memory care is part of why Encore remains a proud, ongoing supporter of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Encore staff and residents have walked together in past years, and this October, Team Encore will once again join the Avalon Park community at Lake Eola to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s research, advocacy, and support. The connection between art and memory reflects the same spirit that drives Encore’s involvement in the walk. No one facing Alzheimer’s should do it alone, and every connection, whether through a shared painting session or a shared mile on the walk route, matters. Join Team Encore This October, Encore invites the community to join in supporting the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, continuing a commitment to residents, families, and the broader fight against this disease. WORK Local Roots, Better Healthcare: How Inara Medicine Primary Care is Bringing Care Back Home Healthcare shouldn’t be complicated, frustrating, or financially overwhelming. If you have ever waited weeks for a doctor’s appointment, sat for hours in an urgent care lobby, or opened a surprise medical bill, you know how broken the traditional system can feel. I founded Inara Medicine to change that—right here in our own backyard. Named after my daughter, Inara (which means “ray of light”), our clinic was born out of personal experience. After my daughter was born, my wife and I were hit with an astronomical stack of unexpected medical bills. I knew right then that our community deserved a direct, honest, and personal relationship with a doctor without the fear of hidden costs.

-Massive Savings: Deeply discounted rates on labs, imaging, and prescription medications compared to typical health system markups. -In-Office Care: Affordable procedures including biopsies, joint injections, and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT). -Traditional Medicare & Home Visits: We welcome patients with TRADITIONAL Medicare (not Medicare Advantage plans)—and we even offer home visits so you can receive quality care right in the comfort of your house! -HSA Friendly: Fully compatible with Health Savings Accounts (HSA).

As a locally owned practice, we are proud to put down deep roots in the area. A handful of our neighborhood residents from the Avalon Community have already established care with us, sharing how refreshing it is to have high-quality healthcare just a few steps from their front door. Instead of driving across town and paying expensive co-pays at urgent care clinics for minor illnesses or routine care, our local members love the convenience of walking to their appointments—and the significant savings that come with it. We are honored to grow our roots alongside this community and bring clarity back to medicine.
