Coffee with Beat: Why America Remains a Place Where Businesses Can Thrive In recent weeks, as I walk through Downtown Avalon Park, I often find myself thinking about how much can change over time. Nearly three decades ago, this was still mostly an idea on paper. Today, it is a place where thousands of people live, learn, work, and play every day. That kind of transformation does not happen overnight, and it certainly does not happen without vision, persistence, and a willingness to keep moving forward.
When I first came to the United States from Switzerland more than 40 years ago, business looked very different than it does today. There were no smartphones, no virtual meetings, and no instant updates waiting for you first thing in the morning. Communication took longer. Decisions took longer. In some ways, the pace felt simpler. But even then, I could already sense something special about this country. There was an energy here, a belief that new ideas could become something real. That is still true today. Of course, the world of business in 2026 is moving faster than ever. Technology continues to reshape industries, and artificial intelligence is now part of everyday conversations in boardrooms, small businesses, and startups alike. At the same time, new business creation in the United States remains remarkably strong. The U.S. Census Bureau reported nearly 496,000 business applications in February 2026 alone, with almost 29,000 projected business formations from that month’s applications within four quarters. To me, that says something important: even in times of uncertainty, people still believe this is a country where it is worth building something new. In Switzerland, when I was younger, stability was often seen as the goal. Many people began a career with one company and stayed there for most of their working lives. There is something admirable in that. But today, the world moves differently. Markets shift, industries evolve, and even the most
established institutions must continue adapting. The businesses that succeed are not always the biggest. More often, they are the ones willing to learn, adjust, and keep looking ahead. That is one of the reasons I have always admired the American spirit of entrepreneurship. In this country, people are willing to try. They are willing to take a risk, work hard, and begin again if necessary. Innovation is not only about technology. It is about mindset. It is about asking what can be done better, and then having the courage to act on the answer. At Avalon Park Group, we have always believed that strong businesses and strong communities go hand in hand. When businesses grow, they create jobs, bring energy to a place, and help build the kind of community where people want to live, learn, work, and play. That vision has guided us from the beginning, and it continues to guide us today. As I reflect on how much has changed since those early trips from Switzerland, I remain optimistic. The tools may be different. The pace may be faster. But the foundation of success remains much the same. It still takes vision. It still takes courage. And it still takes people who believe that the future can be better than the present. That is why I continue to believe that America remains one of the best places in the world for businesses to grow and thrive. And that is something worth building toward together.

A 2026 Decision for Avalon Park Homeowners For many Avalon Park homeowners, the question like Avalon Park—known for its stability and strong isn’t whether to improve their living situation—it’s demand—this can be a smart long-term investment. how. Should you sell and buy a larger home, or renovate the one you have? But renovations come with challenges. Mortgage rates are now in the 6%–6.5% range, well above the sub-4% loans many homeowners secured in 2020–2021. Many homeowners are staying put simply to avoid giving up their low interest rate. The Case for Moving Buying a larger home offers flexibility. You can choose a better layout, more space, or a different location that fits your current lifestyle. Today’s buyers may also benefit from increased negotiating power, as homes are sitting longer and price reductions are more common.
What Matters Most In today’s market, your current mortgage rate is often the deciding factor. • Low rate (under ~4%): Renovating is typically the stronger financial move • Higher or recent rate: Moving may make more sense, especially if your home no longer fits your needs Local Insight Avalon Park homeowners should also consider rising insurance costs and buyer behavior. Built on Community: Meet BJ Bowman of Avalon Park Gym Some people find fitness. Others are called to it. BJ Bowman, instructor at Avalon Park Gym, has been showing up for his community long before Avalon Park Gym was established. Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, BJ’s path to Avalon Park ran through two decades of service in the United States Navy. When the Navy brought him to Orlando, he found something here worth staying for.
Tuesday and Friday mornings at 6 AM and Saturdays at 7 AM, the full body circuit class has earned a loyal following. “People are losing a lot of weight and getting stronger every day,” he said. What makes it work is BJ’s ability to push people past their own limits without them even realizing it. He quietly swaps out lighter weights for heavier ones as members grow stronger, nudging them forward before they think they are ready. One member came in simply hoping to lose some weight and get healthier. A few months of Body Blast later, she had transformed her strength, her confidence, and conquered her fear of box jumps. “She is a monster now,” BJ said, laughing.
His connection to this gym runs deep. Long before it became Avalon Park Gym, BJ was already on the floor as a fitness instructor when the facility operated as a YMCA. Outdoor Dining with Pets: Safety and Etiquette Tips Bring a Few Essentials A little planning goes a long way. Consider bringing: • A portable water bowl and fresh water • Waste bags • A small mat or towel for your pet to sit or lie on These simple items help keep your pet comfortable Sharing public spaces respectfully is something and the dining area clean. we all learn, kids, adults, and even our pets. Practice Good Patio Manners Just like people, pets should have good manners in shared spaces. Avoid feeding pets from the table, and encourage calm behavior during your visit. Barking, jumping, or roaming between tables can disrupt other diners and create safety concerns. Outdoor dining is one of the best ways to enjoy Florida’s beautiful weather, and many pet owners love bringing their furry companions along. As more restaurants welcome pets in outdoor seating areas, a few simple safety and etiquette tips can help make the experience enjoyable for everyone.
Be Considerate of Others While many people enjoy seeing pets, not everyone feels comfortable around animals. Respecting personal space and keeping your pet well behaved helps create a positive experience for everyone enjoying the outdoor space. Check Restaurant Rules Not all restaurants allow pets, and those that do may have specific guidelines for outdoor seating. Checking policies ahead of time helps ensure a smooth visit and confirms that pets are welcome.
Know Your Pet Before bringing your pet to a restaurant patio, think about how they handle busy environments. Outdoor dining areas can be noisy, crowded, and full of new sights and smells. If your pet tends to get anxious or overly excited, they may be more comfortable staying home. Keep Pets Close Pets should always stay on a leash and close to your table. This helps prevent them from wandering into walkways or approaching other guests unexpectedly. A shorter leash also makes it easier for servers to move safely with trays and hot dishes.
With a little preparation and courtesy, outdoor dining with pets can be a fun and relaxed experience for everyone. Feeding Health in Central Florida By Dawn Koffarnus, MBA
from 43% to just 8.2%.
One in seven Central Floridians lives with food insecurity. One in ten Central Floridians has been diagnosed with three or more different chronic health conditions. Those two facts aren’t a coincidence.
Even for lower-risk patients, a small intervention can pay significant dividends. Some of the families supported by Second Harvest have limited transportation or a language barrier that can make it hard to access healthcare; but providing food and a bus pass makes it much more likely that they’ll return for follow-up appointments – a major concern in some rural areas, where no-show rates can be as high as 70%.
Central Florida is chronically ill in part because people aren’t getting the nutrition they need to be healthy. When you don’t have stable access to food, you’re at a much higher risk of developing diseases like hypertension (impacting 1 in 3 Floridians), diabetes (impacting 1 in 10 Floridians), and heart disease (impacting 1.4 million Floridians, and the leading cause of death in the state). Getting healthy meals on the tables of food-insecure neighbors is one of the best and most cost-effective tools we can leverage to improve public health. And at Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, we’ve already started putting it into practice. In fact, 73% of the 82 million meals distributed last year were fresh, nutritious foods. In addition to food distribution, Second Harvest is working alongside partners in the healthcare industry, to proactively screen patients for food insecurity and connect at-risk households to healthy food, sometimes even before they leave the doctor’s office. In just a few years, those systemic changes have benefited more than 240,000 individuals. A balanced diet can lower blood pressure, improve heart health, and help prevent or manage chronic conditions like diabetes. For high-need patients and homebound seniors, Second Harvest offers options like Medically Tailored Meals (MTM), which are designed by a registered dietician nutritionist to meet specific nutrition needs and prevent repeat hospital visits. When patients discharged at Central Florida hospitals were enrolled in the MTM program, their likelihood of readmission fell
Beyond the doctor’s office, Second Harvest is also bringing nutrition education to the wider community. Patients who have limited access to healthy food may not know what to look for on a nutrition label, or how to prepare recipes to minimize sodium or cholesterol – but they can learn those skills through free nutrition education classes. Tackling health and hunger at the same time yields cascading benefits, including many that don’t show up on a lab report. It means fewer emergency room visits for easily avoidable health conditions, leaving more beds free for patients with other critical care needs. Itlowers the risk of health complications. It saves money – $2,600 per hospital stay, on average. And it reduces the strain on family caregivers who otherwise couldn’t afford to care for someone with serious medical needs. Food is foundational to health, and having access to a balanced, nourishing diet can be life-changing. “My blood pressure and heart rate are better,” said a Central Florida senior who was referred to Second Harvest’s Medically Tailored Meals program. “I was able to get off my diabetes medication, I lost some pounds – medically, this saved me probably thousands of dollars.” The bottom line is simple: Fighting hunger is feeding health. And thanks to a community of partners, volunteers, donors and neighbors, we’re well on our way to a healthier Central Florida. To learn how you can get involved, visit FeedHopeNow.org. Dawn Koffarnus is the Chief Health Systems and Financial Officer at Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. Through its leadership in the Health and Hunger Task Force – a coalition of healthcare providers and community organizations focused on improving long-term health outcomes for neighbors experiencing food insecurity and chronic illness – and its investments in workforce training and access to nutritious food, Second Harvest is helping address the root causes of hunger as a vital component of public health.

Kam’s advocacy took on new urgency. Engaging, educating, and empowering others became the core of his efforts.
“Three statistics perplex me about kidney disease,” Kam says. “Thirty-seven million people have chronic kidney disease—90% are unaware of it.
