Time and events course along with ever-increasing speed in a world, that of the Automotive, which has itself always been characterised by competitiveness and innovation. Furthermore socio-economic circumstances and legislative measures can intervene, adding further complexity and unpredictability to the scenario within which we operate. A scenario moreover, in a phase of structural evolution in terms of products, services and organisation of the protagonists, whether in manufacturing or distribution. Whoever fails to change, during this transformation, risks being swept away by the flux. Nature itself teaches us: in order to evolve we have to examine the environment and equip ourselves so that we can respond to new conditions as and when they arise. There’s a spirit which our Group has built up since the nineties, and an impressive history of creating business, work and service. But above all it’s proved itself capable of securing and uniting a Great Team of personnel without whom all this could not have been possible, nor would it have been conceivable of facing the challenges of both today and tomorrow: because this represents the only way to articulate fully the expertise, insight and specialisation using which everyone can advance the quality of the responses required when we interact with public and customer. And its collective bond are the values, the culture of “doing” and the genuine delight we take in our work, which we tackle in order to create solutions wherever we recognise unresolved needs and urgencies, without ever giving up or waiting for someone else to come up with an answer for us. It’s an approach that I never tire of instilling every day to every member of the Team, in order to guarantee the continuity and competitiveness of Autotorino, which so very many of us feel to be an integral part of our very being. It’s an identification that thus brings a “human touch” making all the difference to the relationship with the public who turn to us. This is why we are determined to “drive on ahead”: to be leading players in a changing world, charting a course towards the horizon. A journey which ideally will unite us with our valued customers and launch us together into the future, with confidence and courage.

Saranno come sempre i clienti a dare i voti. In talk about the automotive world perhaps the most overindulged watchword is to describe the technological change taking place as the transformation of car manufacturers and dealers into mere “mobility providers”. But the good news is that it’s still considered that the human race will continue to need mobility and that it will involve something that gets about on wheels! Many struggle to imagine an innovative model that can guarantee mobility, greater environmental protection, with the same occupational relevance to the sector, and a future for boosting consumption connected to the car. A totally new horizon, without losing all of the past, almost impossible. Each and every day start-ups set forth with enormous vision and verve and this clearly involves experimentation. A large number fall by the wayside within months, indeed not that many are even consolidated into projects applicable to consumer demands. But what we can consider very positively is the huge investment that mobility in general, and the car in particular is attracting due to its very strategic nature in our daily lives. There are new perspectives with cars which have a positive impact on the environment, new professions with server provider functions for shared mobility, an innovative ecosystem that should restore a genuine enthusiasm towards car use. It will be a more environmentally responsible movement that anticipates the next revolution in self-driving vehicles. Naturally questions are raised as to how long the first phase will endure and when, essentially, autonomous driving will prevail. No one can provide answers definitively but we’re on the road already and clearly making progress. Technology increasingly becomes a major factor in mobility and is instrumental in the economic “players” within the supply chain. But in an extraordinary way the consumer will always have ever more services, always more flexible. These will carry a cost, as is only right, but they will be much more rewarding. A new model is taking shape, one that will challenge us in our willingness and capacity to change and compete. Autotorino is providing the answers. And customers will always vote with their feet.

The wait is finally over. It’s here. Mercedes-Benz has never ceased working on the concept of a vehicle intended exclusively for urban mobility. In 2007 the smart electric clean drive finally became a reality. Ever since, every generation of smart also offers an all-electric option. New smart is inspired by the conceit of radical simplicity. Another novelty for both models is the concept of colour. For both the fortwo and the forfour, the radiator grill is painted in the same colour as the car itself and no longer has a contrasting tone. And all enhanced by advanced infotainment services built in using app and systems.

ECONOMIA

WE HAVE ANALYSED THE MACRO FACTORS THAT SLOW DOWN THE RECOVERY, BUT AT THE SAME TIME CONSIDERED THE REASONS WHICH HAVE PERMITTED AUTOTORINO AND AUTOSTAR TO CLOSE ANOTHER YEAR ON A POSITIVE NOTE, BUCKING THE MARKET IN GENERAL. Yes the first news is positive: on a global scale the car market on the whole is expanding. With the exception of the parenthesis of the 2008-2009 crisis, overall production worldwide of motor vehicles (including commercial vehicles, trucks and buses) increased from 58 million units in 2000 to around 96 million in 2018. The negative side is that unfortunately within this scenario the European Union is slowing down, to the point that production in the last decade is prefaced by a minus sign (-3%).

European Overview In Europe the decline in car production has generated serious economic and social concerns. Suffice it to say that in the old continent there are around 2,5 million people working directly in the sector, whilst indirect employees number close to a million. So altogether we are talking about around 3,5 million employees, representing 11,3 per cent of the manufacturing labour force. And in Italy the sector has a fundamental significance: with a turnover of 93

12

billion euros alone it’s worth 5,6% of national GDP, employing about 250,000 employees either directly or indirectly, equal to 7% of employment within the entire manufacturing sector.

Italy: a timid recovery? The 2019 data on car sales describe a rather uncertain but not necessarily gloomy national scenario. After months characterised by a “minus” sign, since September 2019 things began to appear somewhat healthier, with results confirming a hesitant but nevertheless favourable trend, but not sufficient to compensate for the almost 1% drop recorded in the first 10 months of the year, compared to the sales recorded in the same period of 2018.

The “Third way” In support of this sector is the direction of purchase towards cars fuelled in an alternative way to petrol and diesel, with a significant growth of hybrid and electric cars (less methane and Lpg). A share, represented by the “third way” that touches 19% of the market. And yet, despite the new-found environmental sensibility, the general scenario of the car in Italy remains uncertain. Of particular concern is the average age of the car fleet, which in this country stands at 10,8 years, worse than the corresponding European mark (10,5 years).Italian owned cars are older and more polluting which is confirmed by UNRAE (National Union of Foreign Vehicle Representatives) which reports that 7,5 million cars circulating in Italy are pre Euro 3, that’s more than 20% of cars on the road. This means that in our country, one car out of five emits quantities of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides through its exhaust, and particularly higher than those approved back in 2001.

Autotorino and Autostar bucking the trend

Despite the overall picture, numbers produced by Autotorino and Autostar Group show continued growth. After the merger that became effective in september 2019, the newborn Organisation is going to close 2019 with a previsional turnover of 1,3 billion. This is not yet the result of the new synergies following the merger, but it’s been made possible by the common values that lead the two Dealers. As they used in the last decades, Autotorino and Autostar are implementing clear strategies and bold judgements to build on step by step, interpreting market trends early, starting with the growing demand for innovative mobility services.

A new benchmark Beyond the commercial deci-

sions that clearly played a fundamental role in the succesful past year, the results obtained during 2019 is also a reward for the strong relationship with clients, the Group Brand portfolio and the splendid work of the people, the very heart of the company.

In 2020 the Dealer will define a new and updated way of approach at the market, in the ongoing delicate phase of technological transition. Its pillars will be the customer, the people who work in Autotorino, the relationship with customers and suppliers, and territories in which operates.

ANNIVERSARI

ANNIVERSARY

MANY THANKS VALMADRERA

20 YEARS AFTER ITS INAUGURATION, THE DEALERSHIP IN THE PROVINCE OF LECCO STILL REMAINS A LANDMARK IN THE TRIUMPHANT MODEL OF AUTOTORINO, REPLICATED AND EXPORTED THROUGHOUT THE REST OF THE DEALERSHIPS. It was in 1993 in fact when Plinio Vanini opened a branch in Malgrate, in the Lecco area, the first outside the Province of Sondrio. No one at that time imagined that many others would follow on from that tentative expansionist approach, right up until Autotorino becoming Italy’s leading Auto dealer group. Six years later, in 1999, that is 20 years ago today, the multibrand dealership in Valmadrera was opened. This inauguration was to mark the start of the structured and organised expansion of Autotorino, by adopting the model that allowed the Cosio Valtellino team to replicate its diffusion in a host of other provinces.

Permanent Workshop Valmadrera has always been a place where you can breathe in an original atmosphere. A workshop ambience where innovations in terms of style, hospitality and service are designed and put to the test. A “front line” to that “model” which over the years has created the singular and winning approach with which successive dealerships have addressed customers, the market and the territory. Back in 1999 the Group was already aiming to offer a complete service in response to customer requirements. It’s no coincidence that over the years, many of the professionals who today hold hugely responsible roles within the Autotorino Group took their formative steps at Valmadrera. A “bridgehead” perhaps from which lots of serious talent emerged. And maybe one above all the rest: Oreste Lanza. Initially responsible for the branch at Valmadrera, today coordinator of the training team that are contributing daily to the advancement of Autotorino personnel.

Many thanks Valmadrera! It felt very important therefore that the 20th Anniversary of the Valmadrera Dealership be celebrated in a rather special way. Thursday 24th October saw customers, colleagues and lots of old friends come together to raise a glass to a remarkable landmark for the Group. The international mountaineer Simone Moro was present to add his congratulations on an evening which celebrated in some style with extravagant aperitif - a hallmark of La Fiorida. And today as ever, the Valmadrera Autotorino base, official dealership for Jeep, Hyundai, Kia, Mitusbishi and Subaru brands, continues to represent the realisation of a dream, the taking up of a challenge and an original approach to work that has set precedents.

INTERVISTA

“THE HUMAN FACTOR WILL ALWAYS COUNT IN THE FUTURE OF THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY” “The car industry is experiencing a moment of epochal transformation. The most significant innovations are in the direction of the development of alternative power supplies. In 2020 in particular we are going to see an explosion of new hybrid, plug-in and electric models. From January in fact, the countdown begins for producers who will have to fall within the average limit of 95 g/km of CO2 established by the European Union. And for those who do not adapt and comply by 2021, serious fines are envisaged”. What’s the situation in Italy with regard to infrastructure?” “We’re still a long way behind, expecially with regard to what the network will have to guarantee as far as the charging of electric vehicles in concerned”. But something is starting to move: Enel, for example, is taking some small measures in preparing new networks. But it’s still going to take time”.

WHAT SCENARIOS ARE ENVISAGED ON THE HORIZON OF THE CAR WORLD? HOW INSTRUMENTAL IS THE TECHNOLOGICAL EVOLUTION IN THIS SECTOR AND HOW WILL OUR HABITS OF TOMORROW’S VEHICLE USE CHANGE? WE ASKED FRANCESCO PATERNÒ, JOURNALIST AND AND COLUMNIST WITHIN THE AUTOMOTIVE WORLD.

Do you think the innovations that you see on the horizon will exclusively concern the type of vehicle power supply? “This is the area where we will see the most immediate effects. The development of the autonomous driving system, for example, is making great strides in the world. But this is a revolution that we will not witness within the next five years”. The picture you are painting is that of a highly evocative futuristic scenario, in which the use of cars appears increasingly depersonalised, where the interaction between man-vehicle is reduced to a minimum. Will it also affect the role of the Dealers? “I’m not convinced. I believe that in the automotive world what we define as the human factor is destined to remain a fundamental element, especially for organisations that are concerned with sales and services. And it will always be down to the quality with which these two elements are provided that will make the difference. It’s a time-honoured convention. Rather, what will be key is the speed with which those who sell cars and provide post-sale services, will be able to adapt and demonstrate the expertise and proficiency required in the very near future, and to put them at the disposal of the end consumer”.

FORMAZIONE

TRAINING PROFESSIONAL

SKILLS

The world of cars becomes ever more fascinating. The technological evolution is raising its game, pushing hard, on a par with its stylistic partner; but behind the undeniable allure that the car brings with it, there’s an equally compelling universe. And that includes anyone looking at it with a view to seeking out new professional opportunities. Two keystones of the automotive sector. The first is the result of a clear reversal of perspective. Will digital make Dealers redundant? A little while ago it was a recurring question. Today, this potential revolution proves itself to be an “ally” and not a “substitute” for the traditional dealer. Digital in fact represents a conduit between the Dealer and the public. And here the second keystone is introduced: progressive training in car distribution permits far greater investment in the development of IT systems, and therefore sees the creation of a range of opportunities for particularly specialised professionals. A recent study by Motor K, in this very regard, found that 75% of Italian Dealers said that they wanted to increase the number of people employed in the web and digital areas within their company. Thus, to the challenges of a market characterised by an intense dynamism like that associated with the automotive industry, those of fast digital innovation are added. A trend that has not been ignored by the Autotorino Group, who from the very outset of its territorial development in the mid-nineties, recognised information technology and the presence of the web as two determining factors. So which types of attributes and skills are the most sought after? If we consider the personnel we are most used to meeting in our dealerships (Commercial or Technical Cunsultants), it’s now essential to have the capacity to work with the main user systems for PC or mobile App, and to have a good aptitude to learn and keep up with the evolution. But there is also room for people who at first glance might seem somewhat “unexpected” when set against the legacy of the traditional dealer business model. The professionalism of the BDC Specialist (who deal with the crucial area of Customer Relations), Data Analysts (fundamental to exploit fully the priceless database in the creation of forecasting models of customer behaviour, to improve the service and advise lines of development, to optimise available resources). Examples that begin to take up more and more room within the sector, and at Autotorino, they represent the most eagerly sought after personnel. Likewise, in a business which revolves round a coherent and dynamic organisation at central level, include people who are dedicated to the management of data, plus commercial management and programming. If we are looking for a common thread, technology and the complexity of the market make increasing volumes of data available: it therefore becomes possible for personnel, and this is a central issue, to produce a synthesis and find the best means of providing services and liaisons in order to satisfy customers. And in order to encourage this, it’s not enough to concentrate simply on emerging professionals, but to “cultivate” them, just the same as those already involved within the Company. This is why the Autotorino Group chaperones all its Workforce, using all its 55 years of experience along continuous and certificated training through its Academy, and thus sustaining the desire to discover, learn and to grow for anyone within a genuinely Formidable Team. NUOVE GENERAZIONI

Metafore ispirazionali Al termine dell’incontro,

NEW GENERATIONS

THE CAPTAINS OF TOMORROW THE ITALIAN AUTOMOTIVE WORLD IS CHANGING, AND AS IT CONSIDERS THE PANORAMA OF THE MAIN DEALER GROUPS, THE NEW PROTAGONISTS OF THE 2.0 GENERATION ARE ALREADY ON THE HORIZON. IN FACT, THE NAMES AND FACES OF FUTURE MANAGERS OF THE MOST IMPORTANT GROUPS ON A NATIONAL LEVEL FOUND THEMSELVES UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT ON SEPTEMBER 24TH AT THE AUTOMOTIVE FORUM IN MILAN ORGANISED BY QUINTEGIA. Representing Autotorino at the Automotive Forum in Milan was Mattia Vanini, Partner & Project Manager of the Group. The round table engaged the “under 40” speakers on the theme “New levers and new perspectives for strategy and management of the Dealership”. Along with Mattia, also taking part were Matteo Albanese (General Manager of the Bossoni Group), Giovanni Brandini Marcolini (CEO of Brandini) and Nicola Maldarizzi (Development & Support Manager of the Maldarizzi Automotive Group).

Looking to the Future What quickly fascinated the attendees was the outline developed at the round table by the President of Quintegia, Leonardo Buzzavo. And what clearly emerged was the common values of relevant factors: a passion for the job, the search for new levers towards competitiveness, directing new energies towards the development of opportunities for innovation, and the enhancement of the “human factor”.

MATTIA VANINI

Sharing and Training Guiding the work of the new generation of managers in the world of the Dealer, are these two crucial aspects. Autotorino have already considered them at some length. The sharing of information between the various departments and company levels is a key feature in the success of tomorrow’s dealers, ever more necessary when we consider structured groups that need to ensure a vital osmosis between different sectors. The second element is the continuous training of human resources, both new personnel and those already active within the company, necessary to ensure a constant upgrading of skills and stimuli.

Human capital This was an area which Mattia Vanini focused on, and he was keen to relate experiences gained in Autotorino’s Beaconforce: “With Beaconforce we wanted to go down a route that facilitated listening to people who were collaborating within the company,” he enlarged “a project which would help us to get a view of the involvement, motivation and state of mind of the individual as much as a global overview. This allows us to find solutions and means of lifting spirits at work, responding in real time to anyone having the odd moment of difficulty and ready to make a qualitative leap”. to come up with an abstract image, and develop it as a metaphor for the Automotive sector. Mattia Vanini suggested that of a regatta: “The vessels are the results of ingenuity and innovation, designed to give their best in the context in which they find themselves. A backdrop of wind and sea, predictable elements yes, but only up to a certain point. Then the key contribution of the crew comes into play, invited to interpret the changing situation of wind or storm, working together to find solutions that will also represent a competitive advantage.” “It’s the same within our sector,” Vanini concluded “which runs between sea and wind along a route which requires us to be always rigorous. If you have a team, and you invest in it and also in technology, if you believe in it right up to the end, it’s possible to tackle big, challenging and eventually triumphant crossings”.

SIMONE MORO

To characterise him simply as a mountaineer is clearly missing something. Born in Bergamo in 1967, Simone started climbing at the age of thirteen. He has tackled eight of the fourteen climbs above 8000m including Everest (four times). One of his most noted challenges was in 2001 when along with Denis Urubko he attempted to link up Lhotse and Everest. The night before reaching the summit he receives a request for help from Tom Moores, a young English climber who had come off a wall. Despite advice to the contrary, Simone heads off alone and at night. He manages to reach the injured climber, secures him and takes him to safety 200 metres above, away from the dangers of avalanche. Then down to base camp. In 2009 he became a helicopter pilot specialising in mountain rescue in Nepal, becoming the first European pilot to operate in the Himalayas. Author of nine books which relate his exploits and experiences, today he still remains close to the mountains whilst participating in meetings and motivational conferences. His philosophy is simple: “Never stop dreaming and attempting the impossible. There is only the almost impossible”.

TEMPORARY STORE

NEL SALOTTO DI COMO DUE INIZIATIVE HANNO POSTO ALL’ATTENZIONE DEL PUBBLICO COMASCO L’ESPERIENZA DEL NEGOZIO TEMPORANEO. UNA FORMULA ESCLUSIVA CHE SI INSERISCE ALLA PERFEZIONE NEL CONTESTO ELEGANTE DELLA CITTÀ, AVVICINANDO IL DEALER ALLA COMUNITÀ.

32

Nuova BMW Serie 1 - The One

TEMPORARY STORE

AUTOTORINO IN COMO’S DISTINCTIVE“SALON”

THE PHENOMENON OF THE TEMPORARY SHOP TOOK THE ATTENTION OF THE COMO PUBLIC. IT’S AN ORIGINAL FORMULA WHICH FITS PERFECTLY INTO THE ELEGANT CONTEXT OF THE TOWN AND BRINGS THE DEALER EVER CLOSER TO THE COMMUNITY. The will of Gruppo Autotorino to be ever closer to the community is the purpose that leaded the birth of the Temporary Store project, putting then it into practice within the territories in which it operates. Bringing the car brand closer to the public, setting up an exclusive showroom tailored to the car model, is a practicable means of attracting the attention of the people while they are going about their business in their usual haunts. Perhaps the most successful example is the one in the Piazza Volta in the centre of Como, embellished by two Autotorino Temporary Stores with both BMW and Mercedes-Benz brands.

New BMW 1 Series - The One The occasion was at the time of the launch onto the European market of the New BMW 1 Series – The One. The Autotorino Group embarked on their first experiment with a Temporary Store in Como, selecting the most exclusive location possible, the Piazza Volta, regarded as the town’s elegant “salon”. It was here that the Group set up the “sky box” in which the New BMW 1 Series was put on display, a car that signals the birth of the third generation of the highly successful premium compact model. Introduced to the public at the end of June 2019, the model clearly attracted the attention of a whole host of passers-by whether tourists or local workers - in an optimum showcase location. New Mercedes-Benz GLC It was in November from the 15th - 20th - in the very same central Piazza Volta that Autotorino Group chose to introduce the new model Mercedes-Benz GLC. On the market for 4 years now, it’s the most popular SUV produced by the Stuttgart Company, with excellent road and off-road performance, it’s spacious, practical and comfortable. It was a debut which using the Temporary Store formula invoked the curiosity of vast numbers of admirers, who took full advantage of the short-term exhibition to drop in and get to know details of the new model at first hand.

TERRITORIO E SOSTENIBILITÀ

A TREVISO PARTE LA AUTOSTAR HA OFFERTO IN USO AL COMUNE UNA VETTURA ECOLOGICA PER LE ATTIVITÀ CHE L’AMMINISTRAZIONE SVOLGE IN CITTÀ. UN PROGETTO CHE DÀ IL VIA A UNA SVOLTA PRECISA A FAVORE DELL’ECOSOSTENIBILTÀ.

34

PROJECTS

THE GREEN REVOLUTION STARTS IN TREVISO AUTOSTAR GAVE AN ECO-FRIENDLY CAR FOR A ONE-YEAR-USE TO THE MUNICIPALITY, FOR THE MANY ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT IN THE CITY. A PROJECT THAT MARKS A SIGNIFICANT TURNING POINT. Anyone living in Treviso have noticed a silent and eco-friendly car on the move through the town. It’s actually the new BMW i3 which Autostar gave to the local authority for a project of zero-impact mobility. Not a simple gift, but the first step of a wider project that sees the Autotorino and Gruppo Autotorino becoming involved in the diffusion of a new kind of mobility, characterised along the theme of sustainability. The car presented to the Municipality of Treviso bears the inscription “Autostar and the Municipality of Treviso for the Environment” on its sides. It was the Mayor of the city himself, Mario Conte who received the, and explained that the BMW i3 would be used for most of activities that the authority carry out in the city. Autotorino, Autostar and BMW have been engaged for years now in a long-term project which has its objective in the spread of a environmentally lower impact culture of mobility. This is why Autostar decided to donate two BMW i3 models to the administrations of Treviso and Villorba, territories where the Group sales network has recently been extended and where it intends to invest in some new projects. The Municipality of Treviso has always been at the forefront of the promotion of best practice regarding the reduction of the environmental impact derived from the use of fuel. “Electric represents the future of mobility” confirmed Mayor Mario Conte “With electric buses in our historic centre we gave a first signal of intent and with this car we aim to give a second one. Many thanks to Autostar for a collaboration that exemplifies just how public administrations and the private sector can work together in harmony”. The consignment of the BMW i3 to the Treviso authority shows how institutions, companies and citizens can actively collaborate to bring about real change. It’s a project in which Autotorino and Autostar wish to play a leading role.

TERRITORIO E TURISMO

PARMA AND REGGIO EMILIA

SUV ATTACK IN CANOSSA TERRITORY IN OCTOBER THE AUTOTORINO GROUP ORGANISED AN IMPRESSIVE EVENT FOR FANS OF THE MOST EXCLUSIVE MODELS WITHIN THE SUV RANGE FROM MERCEDES-BENZ. IT PROVED A WINNING COMBINATION OF TOURISM AND MOTOR CARS WHICH HAD PARTICIPANTS GENUINELY SPELLBOUND. In the magnificent countryside of Emilia Romagna, on the 18th October the Autotorino Group renewed the Mercerdes-Benz SUV Attack offensive. It represented an experience open to a limited number of guests who were given the opportunity to test the very best of the G-class vehicle range, along a varying itinerary combining both asphalt and dirt roads. Fantastic thrills for the crews, who took turns in driving the models provided on a Mercedes-Benz Suv Attack theme.

The Canossa Territory itself The day passed between castles, local flavours and undulating landscapes, the very places where the story of Matilde di Canossa was written who lived in Medieval times. Head of a fiefdom which stretched from Tuscany to Mantua, he was a wise and able governor, even managing to mediate in the conflicts between Pope Gregory VII and the young emperor Henry IV. The stunning panorama of the Canotta rolling landscapes are sure to linger long in the memories of those who participated in the Suv Attack, with the hills rising up towards the Apennines.

A Gastronomic StopOver During such an intensive adventure, it’s impossible not to have a break in typical Emilian company. The Rossi Farm, at Quattro Castella at the foot of the Matildiche hills, sits in the very cradle of Parmigiano Reggiano, which is also responsible for one of the most famous Italian salumi. Since 1868, right here, ancient peasant traditions have been handed down, always in search of the highest quality through the feeding of the farm animals and a respect for the environment. During this particular stage of the Suv Attack, guests were able to get to know the entire production cycle of Parma Cheese and to enjoy specialities of typical, local cuisine.

TERRITORIO E TURISMO

TERRITORY

UDINE, A GENUINE VENETIAN BEAUTY DISCOVERING ONE OF THE MOST APPRECIATED PLACES IN THE FRIULIAN CAPITAL: PIAZZA DELLA LIBERTÀ. RECOGNISED AS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VENETIAN PIAZZA ON THE MAINLAND.

Udine has a magnificence which deserves far more than a quick stop on the way through to Austria, Slovenia or the ski slopes of Tarvisio. The capital of Friuli is home to almost a hundred thousand residents and for a combination of its many qualities, it can claim to be among the Italian cities where people live really well, with genuine opportunities for decent jobs and where public services are more than adequate. City of Art A quality of life that goes hand in hand with the beauty of a place. Udine is an artistic Italian city which wins you over with its elegance and hospitality. The “salon” within its centre is the Piazza della Libertà, the oldest, and very much the beating heart of the city. It’s a real gem appreciated by everyone, to the point of being christened “the most beautiful Venetian piazza on the mainland”. What is striking is the urban balance created by the Renaissance buildings, and its very composition. For example the Loggia del Lionello constructed in 1448 with its unforgettable white and pink marble bicorn in Venetian Gothic style, restored in the second half of the 19th century. Today it hosts events of all kinds. Adjacent¸ it’s certainly worth having a look at the temple of San Giovanni, overlooked by the belltower of the two Moors. The Castle Up above on a hill with respect to the Piazza, the Castle of Udine dominates all. According to legend, Attila, having sacked the town of Aquileia in 452 ordered the occupation of this high ground, the better to observe the flames from above. The castle was constructed in 1517 on the remains of an ancient Roman castro. Today it houses the City museum and is surrounded by an expansive garden much appreciated by visitors and locals alike. Mercatovecchio The via Mercatovecchio shifts you away from the castle, along perhaps the most stylish of streets which takes its name from the market which dates back to 1248. It’s a thoroughfare full of boutiques and shopping opportunities, bordered by the portals and stately homes of the most important families in the town. To really appreciate the essence of this special part of the town, why not take some time sitting in one of the tasteful cafes along the avenue, simply watching the world go by. Udine’s Cathedral Dedicated to Santa Maria Annunziata it was originally built in the mid 13th century. During its long history it has been subject to all manner of reconstructions. Its exterior, clearly inspired along Gothic lines, contrasts sharply with the Baroque interior. The superbly decorated alterpieces which enhance the church chapels are the work of Tiepolo. The Manin family during the 18th century were responsible for further edification by preserving the Duomo’s oldest paintings dating back to the 14th century. Udine is undoubtedly a magnificent city well worth hanging around for a while in order to fully appreciate it. And no visit would be complete without incorporating some of the traditional Friulian dishes, inspired by the products of both land and sea. Here’s a proposition. In addition to Prosciutto di San Daniele, produced just a few kilometres from Udine, sample the Montasio cheeses and Salam tal aset, fresh salami cooked in vinegar.

LEGGENDE

30

THE INGENUOUS TARTANÖL TODAY MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE DISCOVERING AND IMMERSING THEMSELVES IN THE UNBLEMISHED LANDSCAPES OF VAL TARTANO WHICH, THANKS TO THE NEW PONTE NEL CIELO ALREADY ADDRESSED IN THESE PAGES, HAVE BECOME THE SOURCES OF CONSIDERABLE EXCITEMENT ATTRACTING EVER MORE ATTENTION ON TV AND THE EVER-PRESENT “SOCIAL APPARATUS”. And these very same panorama and territory are also the protagonists leading to a wealth of anecdotes and good-humoured tales in which the communities of Val Tartano feature prominently. There’s a story still told, said to be true of a Tartanöl living in the 19th century who had never seen anything but his native Tartano town. Until that is, he had to go to Campo, another village situated at the mouth of the valley before it gently meanders between the two green wooded slopes that lead to Tartano. Between these two nuclei of Val Tartano, it’s well-known that a healthy local rivalry exists and which divides the two far more than the modest 5 kilometres that separates them. A rivalry mostly manifested in taunting, but also made evident by two dialects with subtle differences and the practice, at least up until the 20th century of not marrying someone from the neighbouring community. Anyway having endured the procrastination of this particular legacy, our very own Tartanöl eventually reached Campo - a much bigger community than his native Tartano - and which opened out far and wide with the whole of Lower Valtellina on the horizon , the lake in the background and the accompanying mountains. He gaped, open-mouthed for a little while, much to the amusement of the Camparèi who had encountered him and to whom the views were obviously familiar, until he finally took off his hat and hurled it as far as he could exclaiming “Fèrmet, capèl, che de munt tu n’èe vedüü asée” (“Stop hat, you’ve seen quite enough of all this!”) Confronted by the discovery of such an expansive, beautiful and varied world, where other might he have wanted to go? The Camparèi still laugh at his innocence. But, with enormous thanks to the Bridge in the Sky, nowadays there are many a thousand visitors who come here to remain open-mouthed in front of such magnificent landscapes; and the Camparèi can share their very own splendour with pride and no longer derision. Maybe even for the good Tartanöl it was less naivety and more genuine enchantment.

RECOGNITION

CHEESE OF THE VERY HIGHEST QUALITY

VALTELLINA CASERA DOP, LATTERIA AND SCIMUDIN FROM LA FIORIDA HAVE BEEN RECOGNISED AMONGST BEST PRODUCTS AT T HE 112TH MOSTRA DEL BITTO. The major showcase of Valtellina food and wine par excellence has emphatically enthroned the produce from the La Fiorida dairy. The annual Bitto Exhibition took place on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th October at Morbegno, its 112th staging. The occasion represents an important stage for cheese producers in the province, invited to measure the quality of their respective handiworks. No surprise that the Cheese Contest is the most anticipated appointment of the weekend, in which the very best “rounds” of the two DOP cheeses in the province of Sondrio, Valtellina Casera and Bitto, the traditional Latteria and the freshest of Scimudin are announced. Four differing dairy products which very much encapsulate in their flavours the supply chain which combines the history, tradition and artistry of breeders, farmers, dairymen, and those occupied on the Alpine pastures. The Jury of experts of the Concorso dei Formaggi have recognised the cheeses on display from La Fiorida as amongst the very best. Highlights included their Valtellina Casera DOP, with the Third Prize in both the 70-179 maturation category, and in the 300 plus day equivalent, and the First Prize for the 180299 maturation category; First Prize was also won by the La Fiorida Dairy itself. In the Scimudin section La Fiorida took to the podium with the Second Prize. “These awards are a recognition of work that occupies the whole of La Fiorida and which come from way back,” explained Plinio Vanini “breeding our stock in the barns has allowed us to produce healthy specimens, which enjoy exemplary practice and maximum attention to their wellbeing. Conditions that are positively reflected in the very character of the milk production. Every cheese form is produced with the very same care and passion as those judged by the Jury of this Cheese Exhibition, in order to propose a premium quality at all times, that will also reward the consumer in terms of taste, authenticity and food safety”. Products are available to the public in the shop adjacent to La Fiorida or they can be purchased online at the site www. lafiorida.com/negozio. It’s a splendid opportunity to enjoy them whenever you fancy, and to appreciate the splendid handiwork of the cheesemakers themselves.

WELLNESS

HYPERBARIC OXYGEN FACIAL THE AMBIENCE OF LA FIORIDA CERTAINLY HELPS TO RELAX THE SENSES AND THE STAFF OF THE WELLNESS CENTRE CAN ALSO CONTRIBUTE MUCH TO THE TRANSFER OF THIS REVITALISATION OF THE BODY. THANKS TO INTENSIVE SPECIALISATION COURSES AND CONTINUOUS SEARCH FOR TREATMENTS WHICH CAN HEIGHTEN THE REGENERATION EXPERIENCE ENJOYED HERE, THE BEAUTICIANS AT THE CENTRE ARE ABLE TO INTRODUCE NOVEL WAYS OF PROVIDING TENDER CARE AND ATTENTION FOR THE GUESTS. One example is the Hyperbaric Oxygen Facial: supremely relaxing and non-invasive, innovative and delicate, it uses pure oxygen to conduct in depth an enhanced serum with a hyaluronic acid and vitamin base, through a special dispenser using just the slightest contact with the skin. The treatment and instruments have been introduced by rigorously following world leaders in hyperbaric oxygen cosmetic therapy, pursued and appreciated by stars in Hollwood: many celebrities have been charmed by its immediately descernible results, so much so that they readily avail themselves prior to posing for photo shoots. This is because it’s a ttreatment which is capable of bestowing – in a totally natural way – a younger and smoother look to the facial skin, which sees wrinkles and small folds mellowed, immediately appearing fresher, brighter and snug. In fact the treatment is at its most appreciable after just two hours of its execution, when the active ingredients are busily stimulating the tissue. And all thanks to the combination of the effect of the hyperbaric oxygen alongside a vitamin-based serum created specifically for La Fiorida and this particular treatment by the Ahura Laboratory, an institution which shares the very same values tied in with the philosophy that inspires the Valtellina holiday farm complex: natural products that derive their effectiveness from the potential already possessed by the raw materials themselves, then applied with unfailing care and attention.

THE THREE TREATMENT PROPOSALS: INTENSIVE It takes shape via one treatment a week for 6 weeks, followed by a callback refresher appointment after 4/6 months. MEDIUM Involves one treatment every 15 days and a refresher appointment after 3 months. SOFT A treatment every month, for a constant and natural “cultivation” of the freshness of the face.

OSSIGENO IPERBARICO

RICETTA

RECIPE

OSSOBUCO: BRAISED VEAL SHANK WITH CREAMED RISOTTO AND SAFFRON STIGMA FROM THE RHAETIAN ALPS OSSOBUCO (ÒSS BUS IN MILANESE) IS A CUT OF BEEF ORIGINATING FROM THE UPPER PART OF THE LEG ALIGNED TO THE TIBIA, WHICH HAS RESULTED IN A VERY TYPICAL DISH IN MILANESE CUISINE. THERE ARE VARIOUS WAYS TO PREPARE IT. HERE’S THE SPECIAL RECIPE FAVOURED BY LA FIORIDA. Elia Colleluori is the chef di Partie for Main courses at La Fiorida. Born in Altri in the province of Terano in 1991, he graduated from the Istituto Alberghiero Procetti di Giulianova. He began his professional career in his homeland at the Ristorante Vitaria and the Hotel Best Western in Giulianova, before gaining further experience at the Aminta Resort in Rome. In January 2018 he landed up at La Fiorida, a move which sat very well alongside his innate passion for agriculture, for breeding animals and hunting, and one that might well become the first step towards the realisation of a dream: to create a similar project to that of La Fiorida involving a holiday farm environment with a short supply chain, high on quality, in his native Abruzzo.

RECIPE:

Preparation:

Ingredients for 4 people:

Brown the veal shanks with celery, carrots, onion and tomato concentrate to produce a uniform browning; then simmer with the Valtellina Red wine DOC and allow it to reduce, add salt and pepper to taste. Cook with the stock for around an hour.

For the preparation of the risotto: 320g carnaroli rice 10g onion 80g butter 20g Evo Oil 3g Saffron Stock - to taste Salt and Pepper - to taste 50g Casera DOP Casello 084 grated cheese

For the preparation of the ossobuco: 4 pieces of ossobuco (around 800g) 30g carrots 30g celery 30g onion 100g butter 20g tomato concentrate Salt and Pepper - to taste Red wine from Valtellina DOC – to taste Stock – to taste

16

Start preparing the risotto by browning the onion with a small amount of butter; then toast it with the rice. Add the saffron and the stock, plus salt and pepper to your taste. Cook for 11/12 minutes on a low heat. Finally, cream by stirring in the butter and Casera DOP Casello 084 grated cheese.

Serving: Place the rice on the plate first, arrange the ossobuco in the centre and cover with its own liquid.

Ivan Lucchina.

RECOMMENDED WINE FOR PAIRING:

MARENA

VALTELLINA SUPERIORE SASSELLA DOCG MAMETE PREVOSTINI Grape Variety: 100% Nebbiolo

Production region: Sondrio, area of Valtellina Superiore Sassella DOCG, from 350 to 550 metres in altitude

This is how the Maître de La Fiorida, Ivan Lucchina, introduces and proposes the wine: The wine naturally owes its name to its characteristics: the intensity of the red, the softness on the palate and a delicate fruity note which lingers. A particular feature on tasting suggests the black cherry, or to use Valtellina terms “la Marena”. The grapes of the noted Nebbiolo are selected from several terraced vineyards situated just outside the town of Sondrio in the Valtellina Superiore Sassella area: and this particular characteristic is further represented through details and design of the label itself. It’s a full-bodied wine, obtained through a 13-day grape maceration, matured for 12 months in oak barrels, a period followed by ageing for a further 8 months once bottled. All these attributes emphasise and enhance the flavours of Risotto with braised veal shanks and saffron stigma also originating from the terraced slopes of the Rhaetian Alps occupied by the magnificent Valtellina vineyards.

CHERISHED MATURATION THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 19TH SAW THE EVENT ORGANISED BY LA FIORIDA AIMED AT PROMOTING THE HOME OF ITS PRODUCTION,VALTELLINA AND THE VERY WORKFORCE WHO BREATHE LIFE INTO THIS ALPINE MOUNTAIN CHEESE. “Il Bitto and the Stars” may change formula but its success is enduring. In the 2019 staging there were three ingredients: territory, people, products. The event involved a multiplicity of protagonists, beginning with “La Fiorida”, the company which were behind its origin, and which has duly evolved over the years. In the 2019 staging Distretto Agroalimentare di Qualità “Valtellina Che Gusto” and Coldiretti Sondrio, all signed up too, with the patronage of Regione Lombardia. All united in order to pay tribute to Bitto DOP, the Prince of Alpine Cheeses, gathering together as many as 19 Chef from an equal number of Michelin-starred restaurants, who during a historic evening would reinterpret this fabulous product and breathe life into some extraordinary dishes.

A Cheese, A Territory “Each “round” of Bitto DOP” relates Plinio Vanini, patron of La Fiorida “expresses in irreducible fashion the bond that unites farming and zootechnical traditions of Valtellina, within a very special Alpine context, and in which this noted cheese is produced. A patrimony which rightly focuses on territory, in that we are invited to preserve this priceless heritage, and to entrust it intact to the generations to come, so that they too can take full advantage of it”. People Thus it’s as clear as day that the hundreds of people who still tether the economy of their very existence to Alpine endeavours occupy a special place. A key role, represented by their work with commitment and passion, straining to breed, transpose and produce the raw materials themselves, then entrust the final product to the consumer, but with the knowledge that they have imparted the appropriate values in that which is bought and hopefully appreciated. Hence the need to support those who are engaged in mountain farming on a daily basis, including through a contribution to their income. A step which has also to involve the institutions - starting with Europe – duly invited to consider the right formulae for support. The products Finally the Bitto, extolled by the work of the guest Chefs. Each approached their task with a huge respect for Valtellina’s emblematic cheese, coming up with tasteful and appropriate solutions that reflected the Bitto in all its diverse maturations and variations. All this gave rise to some exclusive and highly original recipes, which delighted the palates of more than 400 guests in attendance, culminating in the cutting of a perpendicular of rounds of Bitto DOP, dating between 2012 and 2019, hailing from the mountain pastures of Carisole, Olano, Pian del Nido, Tagliata and Dosso Cavallo and in Valgerola.

2026 Olympics The Bitto, together with other Valtellina products, will be a key ambassador for the territory with regard to the “Milan-Cortina Winter Games 2026”. During the course of “Il Bitto e le Stelle” an initiative was introduced which will endorse the campaign to launch the Winter Olympics. A “reserve of Olympic rounds” of Bitto DOP will demonstrate through its maturation the real quality of the cheese. Five selected rounds, one for each year of anticipation, one for each of the Olympic rings, will be conserved in waiting for the lighting of the Olympic torch to open the games. In addition, a collection of “original recipes” will epitomise the excellence of Valtellina and Lombard flavours, each endorsed by the chefs involved in the event held at La Fiorida. Charity Thanks to “Il Bitto e le Stelle 2019” it was possible to set into motion a fundraising

effort on behalf of Cancer First Aid ONLUS and its many projects to support home care activities developed by the Hospice of Sondalo and Morbegno, through health personnel and volunteers in the oncological field.

R I C E T TA

RECIPE

PIZZOCCHERI DELLA VALTELLINA In Valtellina, everything is up for discussion, except of course the original recipe for the preparation of Pizzoccheri, the one with the capital “P”. Not by accident was it at Teglio, home of this dish, that in 2002 the Accademia del Pizzocchero di Teglio was established in order to “safeguard, promote and propogate the Pizzocchero of Teglio and all the typical manifestations of food and wine in the Province of Sondrio”. Here then is the original recipe, the one approved by the Accademia and followed slavishly by chefs at La Fiorida.

Ingredienti (dosi per 4 persone)

Ingredients (quantity for 4 people)

400 g of buckwheat flour; 100 g of white flour; 200 g of butter; 250 g of Valtellina Casera DOP cheese; 150 g of grated Parmesan cheese; 200 g di cabbage; 250 g di potatoes; a clove of garlic; pepper.

Preparation Combine the two flours, mix with water and work for around 5 minutes. Take the rolling pin and roll out the dough to a thickness of around 2-3 millimetres, from which strips of around 7-8 cms are obtained. Overlap the strips and cut width-wise, resulting in tagliatelle forms around 5mm wide. Cook the vegetables in salted water, the cabbage in small pieces and the potatoes in diced form, add the pizzoccheri after five minutes (the potatoes are a must-have ingredient, whilst the cabbage can be replaced according to season, with swiss chard or green beans). After around ten minutes collect the pizzoccheri using a skimmer and pour part into a hot roasting pan, sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and flakes of Valtellina Casera DOP, continue by alternating pizzoccheri and cheese. Fry the butter with the garlic allowing it to take on colour nicely, before pouring it onto the pizzoccheri. Without stirring, serve the piping hot pizzoccheri with freshly ground pepper.

A DELIGHT FOR ALL “FOUR SEASONS”

LA FIORIDA PROPOSES AN AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCE OF THE SENSES. A JOURNEY THROUGH THE KNOW-HOW AND FLAVOURS OF THIS MARVELOUS TERRITORY, WHICH KNOWS PERFECTLY WELL HOW TO BESTOW - SEASON AFTER SEASON AROMAS AND PRODUCTS OF AN EXTRAORDINARY NATURE. . When Plinio Vanini began to consider just what should inspire the gastronomic offerings of La Fiorida, he imagined a kitchen that had a strong seasonal connotation. Authentic dishes, inspired by local traditions and products of the very highest quality from the territory, open to an optimum level of reinterpretation. However, every menu has to be guided by the enlightened use of the ingredients offered up by the earth throughout the year and from one season to the next.

Quattro Stagioni Hence the idea of dedicating each of La Fiorida’s dining rooms to a season, furnished with pastoral elements. The “Four Seasons” restaurant has all manner of traditional dishes on offer, prepared with the very best ingredients at 0km, such as the “hand worked” pizzocchero, made with local stone-ground flour, and Valtellina Casera DOP cheese. Don’t deny yourself the Taroz made with Sacco potatoes and the freshwater fish dishes. In this period of the year, we invite you to try the potato and spinach gnocchetti with a fondue of Valtellina DOP casello 084, the engaging Grosio pesteda, and truffles from the Costiera dei Cech. the needs of our vegetarian guests (try the Chiscioi, fritters made with cheese and buckwheat flower).

Attention to detail Every dish served at the tables of the restaurant “Quattro Stagioni” at La Fiorida, is homesourced at the farm and its vegetable plot surrounding the restaurant itself, a short stroll from where they are consumed. Everything is undertaken with a genuine love for the animals, whose total care is guaranteed within a habitat that protects their well-being above everything (because only in this way can they produce the milk, cheese and other topquality products) starting of course with their own optimum fodder. Each and every product thus has the shortest of journeys, a matter of metres, and smacks of quality. Like La Fiorida’s bread, prepared with a starter yeast base. This is precisely why the “Quattro Stagioni” restaurant is intent on offering guests an authentic experience of the senses, not just a mere lunch or dinner. A journey through the know-how and flavours of this marvelous territory, which knows perfectly well how to bestow - season after season aromas and products of an extraordinary nature

An Authentic Farm Where the northern tip of Lake Como meets the Alpine arc in Lombardy, there’s a corner of Valtellina which remains totally immersed in the age-old traditions and rhythms of Nature. Namely, the La Fiorida Holiday Farm complex, a representation of authenticity which has its roots firmly in the land and fields, in the animals reared in the barns, in the flavours produced in the cured meat section and the dairy. And it’s this very tradition which inspires and distinguishes the very substance of the Azienda Agrituristica La Fiorida, for an originality that hits you immediately on arrival. Rituals of livestock rearing, handed down through generations have discovered here a modern interpretation, with meticulous attention to animal welfare which is reflected in the dairy products and in the cured meats, as well as in the quality fare served up in the Quattro Stagioni restaurant or indeed the Michelin-starred La Preséf. The finest fruits of the farm itself alongside those of the surrounding territory bring forth flavours and emotions, thanks to the imagination of chef Gianni Tarabini, Stella Michelin, and member of both Chic - Charming Italian Chef – and Euro-Toques International, the association founded by Gualtiero Marchesi. From the guided tours of the barns or the dairy for children and families, to the wellness sojourns for couples, everything is geared towards bringing guests into an inspirational contact with the pervading consciousness of Nature, its rhythms and traditions. A quality appreciated in the ready satisfaction of one’s natural desire for genuine relaxation and a retreat from the untenable rigours of the daily round.

The holiday farm Agriturismo La Fiorida is situated in lower Valtellina at Mantello, in a particularly striking Alpine area. Farm philosophy is inherently founded on the concept of animal welfare and respect for the environment. Cattle rearing right here is dedicated to providing high quality dairy products of a typical, traditional Valtellina nature. La Fiorida itself presents leisure opportunities and relaxation for tourists and families who can enjoy all the benefits of a modern health and well-being complex. The centre boasts 29 comfortable room and a genuinely warm Valtellina welcome. It also plays host to the Michelin-starred restaurant La Preséf, a veritable landmark in gastronomic excellence. For the youngsters the farm throws up a wide range of opportunities to see animals in their natural environment and learn all about dairy/cheese production.
