Rules Corner Search Time For Lost Ball HOW LONG IS THREE MINUTES? It may be relative, depending on which side of the bathroom door you are on.

Most golfers know that three minutes flies by when searching for a ball. The allowed search time for a lost ball had been five minutes since 1891 (128 years!). It was reduced to three minutes in the new Rules for 2019 as part of an effort to speed up play. While the dictionary says something is no longer lost if it is found, the Rules of Golf say a ball found after three minutes is still lost (definition of LOST).

The shorter search time seemed like an innocuous change at first but has gradually become a concern for players. That’s because the penalty for a lost ball is very painful, especially if the ball is found only a few seconds over the three-minute limit. The stroke made at the ball counts, plus the player gets a one-stroke penalty and must replay a ball from where the previous stroke was made (e.g., a tee shot lost outside of a penalty area results in the player starting the hole over, hitting three). This says nothing of the player’s exasperation.

In tournament play, if a referee is present, he or she will start a timer when the player or player’s caddie begins searching in the area where the ball is likely to be (not when spectators or other players start searching). The player may not delay reaching the search area to allow others more time to look for his or her ball. As search time winds down, the referee will probably state when two minutes are left, when one minute is left, when fifteen seconds are left, and finally when time is up. Without a referee present, players might not monitor search time with a watch or phone timer but are still expected to act with integrity and not search beyond three minutes.

The three minutes does not include time for a reasonable interruption, such as standing out of the way while another player makes a stroke or the time taken mistakenly dealing with a wrong ball. Should the player stop looking and leave the search area to play a provisional ball or return to where the previous shot was made, the three-minute clock keeps running. However, if someone finds a ball before the search time ends, and the player is not nearby and has not yet put another ball into play, the player is allowed a reasonable amount of time both to get to the ball and to identify it, even if doing so extends beyond the three-minute search period.

Everything considered, the player is well-advised to hit a provisional ball whenever there is a reasonable possibility the original ball outside of a penalty area may not be found or might be out of bounds (e.g., tall grass, heavy rough, woods, blind shot gone astray). This will at least save the time and agony of returning to where the previous shot was made if the original ball is lost.

Open & Net Division Roundup at MAGA Four-Ball Championship Franklin County Country Club in Washington, MO, served as host of the 10th MAGA Four-Ball Championship. This was the first time the Four-Ball event would be played as a 36-hole championship, and the response from the players was overwhelmingly enthusiastic.

Not surprising, a home-course team from Franklin County, Ryan Helfrich, and John Rosenbaum came out on top in the Net Division with an 11-under total with rounds of 66-65. The 2018 Net Champions, King Edmonston and Marvin Frazier, finished five shots back at 6-under par.

In the Open Division, Ryan Eckelkamp and David Strickland won their 3rd Four-Ball title, having won in 2010 and 2016. Once again, a little home-course advantage played a role in the Championship as Eckelkamp, a Franklin County member, and Strickland, who plays at Tapawingo, opened with a first-round 67. However, with a 67 on Tuesday in the second round, the side of Ethan Corlija and Todd DeGrand worked their way into contention. Playing just ahead of the Eckelkamp-Strickland team, their play made the outcome uncertain until the very end. Ultimately, the Corlija-DeGrand opening 72 was a stroke too much as the champions came hope in 71 and a one-stroke win.

Road Trip - Sewanee, Tennessee Golf trips are one of the many joys of enjoying the game on courses that often surprise you!

On a recent trip to Atlanta for the wedding of our nephew, my wife and I stopped at a spot truly off the beaten path. First, I had never heard of the University of the South, located in Sewanee, Tennessee, about an hour north of Chattanooga.

However, I had heard they have one of the best 9-hole courses to be found anywhere, located on the campus. I made a reservation at the Sewanee Inn (also located on the campus grounds) with the 8th hole running just outside our patio.

Imagine my surprise when there in the fairway about 100 yards from the green was a replica of the famous “Principles Nose” from St. Andrews. With a nod to the school’s Episcopal The Sewanee Inn heritage - and the original designer of the course decades earlier in 1915 - they call this the “Bishop’s Nose.”

The next morning I began my round over the 2013 renovated Gil Hanse design. For those unfamiliar with Hanse, he was selected over Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, and others to build the course in Rio for the 2016 Olympic event. He is also designing the most recent course at Bandon Dunes - Bally Bandon Sheep Ranch.

To say his designs are outstanding is almost understating his work.

The first two holes are back-to-back par 5s, featuring a blind approach to the first and plenty of well-positioned bunkers on the second. The third - a par-3 of 177 yards - is over a chasm to a large green with a breathtaking infinity fall-off at the rear. The fourth is a short par 4 (264 yards) followed by another beautiful par-3, this one 200-yards over water, again with the back edge just yards from a 100-plus foot fall-off to the valley far below. The sixth reminded me of Bellerive’s 14th, a dogleg left that winds around a wooded left side, guarded by bunkers. A really good test. The seventh, a straightaway par 4 of 417 yards with bunkering on both sides that narrow the fairway at the normal landing spot. Playing short of the bunkers for The first hole. A par 5 of 556 yards. safety, my approach with a mid-iron fell just short, landing on the false front and rolling some 30-feet down into the swale. A pitch to the front pin also missed the mark, with the ball rolling back at my feet. A second attempt was more successful, but I sheepishly walked to the 8th tee, counting my strokes for a double bogey.

As I mentioned, the eighth runs along the rear of the Inn. Fairly short at only 371 yards, I had only 120 yards for my approach to the well-bunkered green. The tee for the 9th is the only one not located just steps from the previous green as it runs adjacent to the first along the road leading to the golf shop. The Course At Sewanee

With only nine holes, you might think a second round might not prove very challenging. However, with a slight adjustment to which tees you play, it’s almost an entirely new course. I played the purple tees my first round (3390 yards), posting a 39 as I managed to avoid most of the bunkers. My second 9, playing the black and purple combination (3312 yards), was a bit more challenging as par for the first was four, while the ninth played as a par 5. In all, I was happy with my 79 and that I found an exciting course that was everything I hoped for during my round. The course can play as short as 5,251 from the gold or at 6,702 from the tees I selected, with the white/black tees combined with the white, playing at 6,309.

The Course at Sewanee, only a few minutes off I-24, is a terrific spot to enjoy an exciting round for anyone making the trip to Atlanta or down to Florida.

The par 3 5th hole - 200 yards. The tree behind the green has an interesting history. During Prohibition, whenever the Revenue Agents were in the area, a white flag was hung from the tree, informing those in the valley below to guard their stills.

On The Greens...

Picture yourself running a marathon. You start at the beginning just like everybody else but a peculiar thing happens. Not long after you start the race the finish line begins to move. Believe it or not it’s moving the wrong way… further and further away from you. It’s almost like a nightmare honestly. You are running and you can see where you need to go, but you can’t get there. It’s like you are running in quick sand. I guess you could quit running and give up but you have never really been a quitting kind of person and there are all your teammates to consider. So you keep running because it’s the only option, as you see it.

I wasn’t really sure what I was going to write about. I had a few ideas I was bouncing around, but after some thought, I concluded that I had to talk about the pink elephant in my room.

I can’t escape it. I drag it around every day like a giant boulder.

Constant reminders everywhere I look. I am the Golf Course Superintendent at The Quarry Golf Club, where we spent 46 days flooded this summer. Basically, we were under water through all of June and the first half of July. If you didn’t get to see the flood, or the cleanup for that matter, it is hard to describe and even harder to imagine possible. We had 4 greens that were negatively impacted and they subsequently took some time to restore. We lost about 30 of our 75 acres of rough. It has since been reseeded. We have about 30 acres of zoysia. Some of it was under water for as much as 32 days. When you consider we only lost about half an acre of zoysia, it’s pretty amazing. We spent about 60 days without access to the maintenance facility, where 3 feet of water sat stagnate in the office I need to stay organized and oversee an operation that extends over 200 acres. A logistical disaster in itself. To say I’ve pumped a lifetime’s quota of water, may be the understatement of the year. Not ideal circumstances at any time, especially during the golf season, but we battled through it the best we knew how. No doubt we have traveled a far distance from the worst of it.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a lucky guy. It’s taken some reflection to get to the point where I can say that, but it’s true. No one was injured during the flood. I feel very fortunate to have a healthy family and a good support system of friends and awesome coworkers. This was my 30th season on a golf course. Most of those have been good years. I am not looking for pity. I would like to ask for something though. I would like to ask for a moment to thank everyone for their patience, understanding and hopefully for their continued support and most importantly their friendships.

Adversity is a part of life. Actually, when you think about it… the world is full of people overcoming adversity. Especially when you’re a Golf Course Superintendent in the transition zone. Seems like we get the pleasure of doing it every day. Being a Golf Course Superintendent can be a lot like running a marathon. It’s most certainly not an easy thing to do. Not just anyone can do it. It takes a special breed of person. You are always training for the race. Working on your craft and conditioning. Trying to gain an edge and constantly giving your all to be the best you can be. Quite maddening at times. Just staying sane is a job in itself. But we stay in the race. We keep coming back for more. I just wish Mother Nature would quit moving the finish line.

St. Louis Golf History - Jim Jackson -

“The difference between Jimmy and other golfers is easy to relate. After a round, most are talking about their round, how they did. Jimmy would be the first to ask how your round was!”

The Kirkwood High grad began winning in the 1930s, and kept it going right into the 1980s, just months before his untimely death from a brain tumor. During those six decades, he not only made friends, but he was much beloved by everyone who knew him.

Following graduation from Kirkwood, Jimmy enrolled at Washington University. There he played both basketball and golf, excelling at both.

The winner of four Missouri Amateur titles, Jimmy shined at all levels of golf. He won back-to-back Trans-Miss titles in 1954 and 1955. He earned a spot on two Walker Cup teams, the first in 1953 and the second in 1955. The 1955 squad was the last to cross the Atlantic by boat as the team headed for their Matches at St. Andrews. He qualified for 18 U.S. Amateurs and three U.S. Opens. He played in five Masters, the British Amateur and two U.S. Senior Amateurs. His wins in the St. Louis Publinx, the District 2-man, the Father-Son, and the Tournament of Champions, are too numerous to count. He held high the Men’s District trophy on three occasions and was the first amateur to win the Missouri Open, doing so in 1977, bettering all the pros in the field.

Legendary Bob Cochran once called Jackson the best long putter he ever saw. But, perhaps the best compliment paid to him is from those he competed against and teamed with in his many events. Walker Cup teammate Ken Venturi was high in his praise for Jimmy, calling him one of the finest players and individuals he ever met.

In 1942, Jimmy posted a 145 total for 36-holes at the Metropolitan Open Championship, tied with veteran St. Clair CC pro Frank Moore.

The two went head-to-head during the Monday playoff where they once again tied, with Moore going 36-38 and Jackson 40-34 over Forest Park.

Finally, during the Tuesday playoff, Moore’s steady play gave him the title with a 74 while Jimmy posted a 78. Still, the 19-year-old had announced his presence loudly, and from this point on, he would be among those to beat whenever he teed it up.

Perhaps a short story will best tell how his fellow players looked at him. During a $20 round at Greenbriar, a player striped his tee shot down the middle of the first hole, putting his second just below the flag. Jackson, who was not known as a great driver, pushed his tee shot to the right. His second on the par 4 was launched over tall trees, landing on the back collar of the green, some 30-feet above the flag. Lining up his putt, Jimmy rolled it in for birdie. With that, his fellow competitor reached into his pocket, pulled a 20-dollar bill from his wallet, dropped it on the green, and began walking back to the clubhouse, knowing how the rest of the day would go.

Jim passed away on October 15, 1983, at age 60, after battling brain cancer for more than a year.



2019 Players of the Year Accomplishments CRIMSON CALLAHAN began the year with a stunning 19-hole victory over defending champion Drew Pranger at the Old Warson Cup Matches in May. He followed that up with a spot in the Local U.S. Open Qualifier. Just a week later, he finished third at the Normandie Amateur, a shot out of the playoff.

At the Metropolitan Open at the Country Club of St. Albans, Crimson had rounds of 72-71 to finish just a single shot out of qualifying for the final round. His second win of the season came at the inaugural 9-hole Championship at Ballwin Golf Course as his 2-under par 34 gave him a two-shot edge. His rounds of 72-75 left him three shots off the qualifying position at the U.S. Amateur qualifying at Meadowbrook in July. At the Metropolitan Amateur, played at Aberdeen Golf Course, Crimson displayed his strong play once again. His rounds of 70-74-67 were good enough for a tie for fourth place.

ELLEN PORT, already the area’s best female amateur in history proved that she is not ready to pass the torch just yet. Teeing it up for the second year in a row in the U.S. Women’s Senior Open, Ellen started strong and was among six amateurs who qualified for the weekend. A solid second-place finish in the Metropolitan Women’s Amateur, with rounds of 74-71, was next on her schedule. Already qualified for the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur and the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, Ellen began sharpening her game in preparation for those Championships. At both Championships, her stroke play totals were enough to qualify for match play. At the Senior Women’s Championship at Cedar Rapids CC (IA), a 6 and 5 victory in Ellen’s first-round match had her facing the eventual runner-up, Sue Wooster, in the second round, where Wooster claimed a 1up win. At the Women’s Mid-Amateur, Ellen took her first-round match 2 and 1, setting up a repeat match against defending champion Shannon Johnson, who defeated Ellen 2 and 1 in their 2018 match at Norwood. Unfortunately, Johnson claimed another 2 and 1 win over Ellen in their 2019 Round of 32 match.

Perhaps the highlight of the season came at Pinehurst in the Senior Women’s North & South Amateur. In a field dotted with several former champions, Ellen overwhelmed the competition, winning by 15 strokes.

Finally, Ellen teamed with fellow U.S. Women’s Senior Amateur Champion Lara Tennant to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Four-Ball Championship, to be played in April 2020 at Quail Creek CC in Naples, Florida.

BUDDY ALLEN fought to the very last event of the season to finish atop a strong group of senior players. At the Normandie Amateur, he finished tied for 7th in the senior division. Next up was the East Side Amateur, where his 5-under total (67-72) 139, was nearly enough for him to take a double victory.

He tied for the top spot in the Open Division, losing in a playoff for the title. However, he did earn the victor’s trophy in the senior division and a two-shot edge. At the Metropolitan Amateur, Buddy finished in a tie for 32nd position as the heat and humidity took its toll on many players. Buddy’s round of 73 at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifying was three shots off the number needed to qualify for the Championship. At the Metropolitan Senior, his opening score of 71 had him tied for the lead. However, an uncharacteristic 83 for his second round placed him in a tie for eleventh. Ultimately, it was his play at the Missouri Senior Championship that gave him enough points to claim Senior Player of the Year honors.

Thomas O. Sobbe Cup Final Four Meadowbrook Defeats Old Hickory in Overtime for Title If the new format to crown the Thomas O. Sobbe Cup champions is not long enough for these guys, the 2nd time in 3 years took an overtime hole-by-hole playoff to decide. The team from Meadowbrook Country Club has the secret sauce for this season-long event, capturing its third consecutive title in the new “Final Four” day of the playoffs. This is the sixth title for Meadowbrook CC, joining Bellerive CC with that distinction. Bellerive won four straight a few years back to maintain that record for themselves.

In the morning Semifinals, the #6 Seed in the playoffs, Meadowbrook would take down The Legends CC with a 4-2 win. On the other side of the bracket Old Hickory, the highest seed at #4 left in the playoffs, would knock out the Glen Echo CC squad by the same 4-2 margin. The final would get started about 1:45 pm on Friday afternoon on a beautiful day at Lake Forest Country Club.

As the sunlight started to set in the evening, the two squads would finish in a tie at 3-3. Steve Shuert (Meadowbrook) and Dan Emrick (Old Hickory), who had just battled each other in a Singles Match with Emrick coming out on top 1up for the tie, would go right back out for a hole-by-hole playoff. Each would make pars at 10 and 18 and back to 10 they went. Now the sun was really behind the clouds and over the horizon as Shuert would roll in a 25-foot birdie putt to seal the win for Meadowbrook.

Here were how the individual Final matches played out. Congratulations to Meadowbrook Country Club on another incredible run, and thank you to the forty-four teams who endured the season-long Thomas O. Sobbe Cup!

U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Qualifying Champions Tennant and Port Team up in Oregon for USGA Four-Ball Qualifying.

Traveling to the great Northwest, Ellen Port met up with her partner, Lara Tallent, winner of the 2018 and 2019 U.S. Senior Women’s title, and more recently winner of the British Women’s Senior Amateur Championship, at Willamette Valley Country Club in Canby, Oregon in an attempt to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball, to be held at Quail Creek Country Club in Naples, Florida, April 25-29.

Posting a 3-under par 69, they followed another tandem who posted a 4-under 68, with each duo qualifying for the Championship.

With no local qualifying in the area, Brooke Biermann traveled to Stillwater, MN, where she teamed with Makenzie Niblett from Austin, TX. The duo shot a 71 to earn a first alternate spot.

MAGA’s Meritorious Award - Ray McCraine The 2019 recipient of the Metropolitan’s Meritorious Achievement Award is Ray McCraine. While his name may not be as familiar as others to player’s today, it was individuals such as Ray, who, in the early days of the formation of the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association, whose presence was so vital to the success MAGA enjoys today.

As a member of Forest Hills Country Club since the late 1970s, Ray was active within Forest Hills early on. He served on the club’s Board of Directors and as President during the late 1970s and early 1980s. As a player, he proved his talent with many club titles, both individual and in team events.

It was while serving on the Board of Directors of the Missouri Golf Association from 1987-1992 that he first became aware of the intent to form the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association. In 1992, he joined the Board of Directors of MAGA and continued to serve until 2018.

During those years, he also served as MAGA President from 1998-2000, following Mike Corry, who was the Metropolitan’s first president.

Ray also served as Chairman of the Course Rating Committee from 1993 to 2010. As part of the MAGA’s new role, Ray and his fellow raters were required to re-rate not just the area’s more established courses, but also the many new courses that were built during the golf boom of the early 1990s. Along with Jerry Higginbotham, John Kueper, and many others, they visited hundreds of courses during his trips, meeting with players, golf chairs, course owners, professionals, and superintendents across Eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois.

He came to the attention of the USGA in 1997, taking part in the USGA Senior Amateur Championship from 1997 to 2017. He also served on the USGA’s NBC Television Committee for both the U.S. Open and the U.S. Senior Open during those years. As you would expect, in his time with the NBC at the U.S. Open, he generally followed the final groups, enabling Ray to not only be on some of the country’s best courses, but also watch the game’s best players play some of their best golf! Furthermore, when working at the Senior Opens, those were the days when Palmer, Nicklaus, Player, and many others were still competing. Having the opportunity to interact with them was also very special as they were always so gracious to Ray and his fellow USGA staffers.

While wintering in Florida, Ray became a member of the Vanderbilt Country Club in Naples. From 2000 to 2018, Ray served on several committees at Vanderbilt while also winning both individual, couples, and team events.

Ray spent considerable time initiating a President’s Cup as well as a Four-Ball event into the mix of club events.

Ray also had a bit of the politician in him, serving as an Alderman in Clarkson Valley in 1985 and 1986. It was during this time that he gained greater insight into how a small village or community could better itself through the efforts of everyone involved.

Ray has some great memories, with nearly all of them around golf. However, he has enjoyed the greatest satisfaction through the years with the Metropolitan as he spent countless hours watching the very best area amateurs compete for the MAGA titles. To Ray, it has been a wonderful journey to be a volunteer for so many years with the Metropolitan.

It is with this in mind, along with his achievements noted above, that the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association is proud to present to Ray its Meritorious Achievement Award for 2019.

Youth On Course - 100-Hole Hike On Monday, September 23, players across the country took part in the Youth On Course 100-Hole Hike to raise funds for the program. The Metropolitan’s Director of Operations, Maggie Smith, and Corey Vanek, one of our Boatwright Interns, undertook the challenge. Never mind that it was one of the hottest days of the year, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 90s, Maggie and Corey began their march for Youth on Course at 6:35 a.m. at Pheasant Run Golf Course in O’Fallon, Missouri. Some 9 hours later, they approached the final hole to complete their Hike.



Norwood Hills to Host Champions Tour Event Norwood Hills, often referred to as the “Club of Champions,” is set to host a Champions Tour Event in September 2020.

The PGA Tour Champions — formerly the Senior PGA — announced an agreement to host events in St. Louis for the next four years at an event at Norwood Hills on October 8. The event will be held September 28 - October 4, 2020.

An overflow crowd of media, sports personalities, politicians, charity groups, Norwood staff, and plenty of cameras and videographers were on hand as the announcement everyone had looked forward to took place.

With Ascension Healthcare as the primary event sponsor, represented by Ascension Executive Vice President Nike Ragone, PGA TOUR Champions President, Miller Brady, opened the event by thanking St. Louis for coming on board.

Also present was Lyda Krewson, Mayor of the City of St. Louis, who voiced her support for the Classic. With proceeds from the event benefiting local charities in the North County area, such as Marygrove, the Urban League and Boys & Girls Clubs, there was plenty of support from Local media was out in full force to cover the press across the region. Champions Tour President Miller Brady with attendance from the Tour was Carol Daniel, emcee for the event Hale Irwin and Billy Andrade.

Other personalities included Bernie Federko and Bob Plager along with veteran sportscaster Jay Randolph.

The PGA Tour Champions holds about 30 events with millions of dollars up for grabs. The tour roster includes Vijay Singh, John Daly, Fred Couples, and tour champion Bernhard Langer, who has 40 career victories in Tour Champions events.

In addition, “tour rookies” for the coming season include Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Mike Weir, and KJ Choi.

Hale’s support for 25-years with his own event at Old Warson raised millions of dollars for Children’s Hospital. The 2019 Payne Stewart Award honor is testament to his commitment to supporting charitable efforts.

2nd Annual Roger Null Golf Internship Outing On one of the most perfect days, 120 golfers - professionals, superintendents, assistants, players, and friends of golf - took over the Bogey Club golf course on Monday, October 7, to raise funds for a scholarship sponsored by MAGA in conjunction with the Mississippi Valley Golf Course Superintendents Association. Named for Roger Null, past superintendent at Norwood Hills and Old Warson, and currently, a widely respected course designer, the scholarship provides funds for a student interested in learning more about a career in the green side of golf.

Played over a course Null renovated from 2007-2014, the Bogey Club layout was in immaculate condition, thanks to the efforts of superintendent Chris Finnerty and his team. Many thanks to Rich Millman for sponsoring the event, and to Chuck Gast of the MVGCSA, Matt Kopsky, Bogey Club General Manager Lynn Butler, Curt Rohe and Maggie Smith of MAGA, and all the participants.

Mid-America Junior Cup While it turned out to be a beautiful weekend at Kansas City Country Club for the final weekend of the year, the team from Kansas City was just too much for the St. Louis juniors. Team KCGA retained the MidAmerica Cup with a 13-3 victory over the weekend.

Saturday morning started with the Foursomes format, boy/girl vs. boy/girl sides. KCGA swept the morning Foursomes to take a 4-0 lead to the afternoon Four-Ball.

In the afternoon Four-Ball, the side of Brooke Biermann and Momo Kikuchi, finally put Team MAGA on the board with a 4&3 victory. KCGA would take a commanding 7-1 lead into Sunday’s Singles, only needing 1 point to retain the Cup. With Sunday’s Singles, came an enormous deficit and pressure on Team MAGA. Momo Kikuchi and Mia Rallo were able to put the final 2 points on the board for MAGA with 1up and 3&2 wins, respectively. While the kids fought hard all the way till the end, Team KCGA took 6 of the 8 Singles to wrap the 2019 Mid-America Cup. MAGA now leads the series 9-8-4 over the 21-year history, last winning the Cup outright in 2012.

Thanks to the Kansas City Golf Association for their efforts in putting together the 2019 Matches and Kansas City Country Club for hosting! A huge thank you to the juniors who played their hearts out, and to the parents for their support in getting the kids to KC.
