Whoa! What a busy July… MAGA’s two “majors” take place in July and it makes for a full, busy month. The Metropolitan Open was as exciting as it could get, with Adam Schenk sinking a Curt Rohe birdie putt on the 54th hole to win Executive Director the title and a $25,000 payday. It was a great week and we appreciate all of the efforts by the Country Club of St. Albans members in making the experience for the players very special! Then to cap off the month the 25th Metropolitan Amateur Championship at Boone Valley was a special week, at a special venue. We had a great evening after Round 1 celebrating the championship silver anniversary with past champions and those influential in the 25 year anniversary of the championship. Great job by Boone Valley and congratulations to Jimmy Siegfried on his victory. Read more about each of these in this issue. Well, the Metropolitan Amateur is always the pinnacle of the season. Once again, the summer has flown by in a blink of an eye as we settle in for the fall part of our schedule and start looking at 2016! Just a couple events in August, our 23rd Senior Amateur will be August 13-14 at Whitmoor CC and our monthly Amateur Series event visit Glen Echo CC. Thank you for the comments I have received from our readers regarding my travel in June to the US Open and US Senior Open, really appreciate hearing your feedback. golfing ability, but we are also looking to test their mental and physical game. As Sandy Tatum, former USGA president, once said about the US Open, “We are not trying to embarrass the best golfers in the world, we are trying to identify them.” A similar mindset applies to the setup for our championships and qualifiers. Anyone can suggest that we should just set up the golf course at 7000 yards each day, but changing the setup each round requires players to think their way around as well. That is the beauty of golf; we do not have the same dimensions, field or court every time we are on the course.
RULES OF GOLF CORNER This month I have taken on the task of writing the article on the Rules of Golf…double dipping is not good for me, just ask our editor! I almost got a 2-shot penalty each month just for getting Curt’s Corner to him in a timely fashion. Anyway, I digress…I thought I would take a minute and talk about some of aspects of course setup and the administration of conducting a MAGA championship or a USGA qualifying round. I receive a number of questions about what our thought process is when setting up a course and I’d like to share a few of these and then provide an explanation.
3) When marking the golf course for competition, why not just mark all the hazards red? This is a common question, and yet it has such a simple answer. When Pete Dye designed the 17th hole at the TPC at Sawgrass how did he envision golfers getting their ball on the putting green? By making a golf stroke. If the island green were marked red - a Lateral Water Hazard - players could hit it over the green and now be allowed to drop a ball on the putting green…negotiating the hazard with a penalty stroke, not a golf stroke. That is certainly not what Mr. Dye intended. This is the first question I ask when looking at how a golf course should be marked pursuant to the Rules of Golf. Is it OK to mark it all red, sure it is; and in some instances, such as for regular member play or public play for Pace of Play purposes, that poses no problem.
1) When choosing hole locations, do you use the 6 easy, 6 medium, 6 hard approach? I have never looked at hole locations in that vein. It really depends on the event, MAGA or a USGA Qualifying Round? For USGA Qualifiers we are trying to identify the best golfers as they attempt to play in a USGA championship. For 18 hole qualifying round (US Senior Open, US Open Local, US MidAmateur) the hole locations and setup will be more of a challenge than the US Amateur, which takes place over 36 holes. For a MAGA championship, such as the Amateur at Boone Valley this past week, the focus is on the entire 54 holes that will be played over three days. Setting three hole locations that vary in difficulty can also be achieved by moving tee locations on a certain day. Taking into account the shot we are asking players to play to a particular hole location (i.e. drivable par 4, shortened par 3 or par 4) can also make a hole play different from day-to-day. As a whole, yes the setup will be more difficult for the final round than it was for round one.

including 3 of the final 4 holes posted a 3-over total. A final fist-pump on the 18th, after making birdie when his approach from out of the bunker landed just four-feet from the hole, left him at 3-over for the championship. Next was the hard part; waiting for the final groups to finish to see if he would make it into a playoff. The final group of Sam Migdal and Skip Berkmeyer knew exactly where they stood coming off the 17th green; Migdal was one over par with Berkmeyer a shot higher. Migdal found the right fairway bunker, the same one where Siegfried had made birdie from a few minutes earlier, with Berkmeyer in the left rough. Catching more sand than he wanted, his approach landed in the water, eventually leading to a triple bogey seven. Meanwhile, Berkmeyer’s approach found the back fringe, where he pitched to 4 feet below the pin. With a left to right break, his par putt slid by, leaving Berkmeyer tied with Siegfried and sending the 25th Amateur to a playoff for the second consecutive year.

The four-hole playoff began at the 15th, a 282-yard drivable par 4. Siegfried left nothing in his bag as his tee shot rolled up, on and over the green, ending in the back bunker. Berkmeyer played an iron to the fairway then his approach just off the left side. Playing perhaps a bit too cautiously, it took Siegfried two to get out of the bunker and a nother to reach the putting surface, leading to an unexpected bogey. Berkeyer pitched to a foot, sinking the par putt and taking a one shot lead. Both players made par on the par-3 16th. At the 17th, the lefty Siegfried pulled his tee shot, which landed on the cart path and nearly into the seventh fairway, ending in the rough behind tall grasses. Taking his time, and trying to find a line to the flag, Siegfried lofted his blind approach onto the green, finishing about 20-feet above the hole. Berkmeyer two-putted for par while Siegfried made a world-class birdie when his putt fell into the cup, halving the match. Both players made par on the 18th, moving the match back to the 18th tee, this time in sudden victory mode. Both players hit good tee shots and were in the fairway, with the Mizzou golfer a bit nearer the hole. Skip struggled with his yardage on 18 on both previous attempts, going long both times (the second time finding the same divot he had made earlier), and on this third time he left his approach about 50-feet short of the hole. Meanwhile, Siegfried was below the flag, about 18 feet away. Berkmeyer’s putt rolled pin high, just below the hole. However, it would make little difference. Berkmeyer and Siegfried shake hands after a hard fought playoff. Siegfried rolled in his second birdie of the playoff and claimed the championship. AMATEUR CHAMPIONS 25 YEARS OF CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF - OWSLEY, KENNEDY & LUNDGREN BRIAN KENNEDY The former University of Illinois player arrived for the 1999 MAGA Amateur looking to unseat two-time defending champion David Estes. However, like past fields, this one was filled with a number of former and current titleholders, meaning that there was more than just a single player who had to be overcome. With a three shot lead after the 11th hole on Saturday, the rain began to fall and following nearly an hour and a half delay, play resumed and, of course, Kennedy had a 3-putt bogey on the 12th hole. Nevertheless, it only delayed the final result. Standing on the 18th tee, with a three shot lead, Kennedy was about to win his first significant title since moving here from Detroit. The Norwood Hills member would soon included among the other outstanding Norwood players who hoisted the champions trophy at the Metropolitan and other area events.

DERRE OWSLEY Standing near the 18th green at Bogey Hills in 1992, having completed his round nearly an hour earlier, he watched David Lucks’ drop a six-foot downhill putt for birdie to tie him at 214. Then, in an effort to join the playoff, Dan “Bummer” Barry’s par putt slid by. Ed Schwent, the leader after the first two rounds - posting a 66 in the opening round, followed by a 74 on Friday. However, his round fell apart when be bogeyed five of his last six holes, finishing with a 78 and landing at 218. On the first hole during the playoff, Owsley, the Columbus, Georgia transplant, swung from his heels and unleashed a drive of nearly 280 yards, leaving him only 89 yards from the pin. Meanwhile, Lucks hit 3-wood, leaving a 145-yard approach, which he left on the right fringe. Owsley’s approach ended 12-feet below the flag and within birdie range. Unfortunately, Lucks’ chip settled in an unrepaired divot only two-feet from the cup, leaving a very precarious putt. Owlsey’s putt rolled to the edge of the cup and stopped, leaving it up to Lucks if play would continue. As his putter struck the ball, the divot forced it to squirt to the left, never giving it a chance to get to the cup. It was over. The aerial photographer had won his eighth area title in three years.
DARREN LUNDGREN Justin Bardgett was the leader after two rounds at the 2006 MAGA Amateur at Boone Valley. However, at 144, he had only a single shot lead over a strong trio of Parker LaBarge, Darren Lundgren and Shawn Jasper. He also knew that tournaments are not won on Saturday. LaBarge’s 66 during round two certainly signaled he would be a factor during Sunday’s final round, but the recent Rice graduate could only back it up with a 1over 72 on Sunday, which was matched by Lundgren. Meanwhile, Bardget and Jasper both ran into trouble. On the 18th green, Lundgren 3-putted, dropping out of the lead and falling into a four-hole playoff with LaBarge. The former Ohio State and Rollins College player, Lundgren reached the 18th green again as he and LaBarge stood even after the third playoff hole. LaBarge showed his champion’s talent, narrowly missing a chip from the back fringe for birdie. Standing 22-feet away, not having made a putt that mattered all afternoon, Lundgren finally made one, giving him the 16th MAGA Championship. The Metropolitan

Who was the first American born winner of the British Open? 2. Who was the first player to win the US Amateur and US Open in the same year? What year was it? 3. This St. Louisan grew up playing Normandie, was the first American-born player to win the British Amateur? 4. Only one player has won a Major title four consecutive times. Who is it? 5. Two St. Louisans finished 2nd in the British Amateur. Bob Cochran did so in 1960 at Royal Portrush. Another St. Louisan did so in 1983 at Turnberry. Who was this area player? 6. Bob Goalby was Masters champion in 1968. There was a controversy when Roberto De Vicenzo signed for an incorrect score kept by his playing competitor. Who was it that kept De Vicenzo’s card? 7. Dutch Harrison was the first head professional at Old Warson CC in 1955. He left in 1960 to take the head pro position at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. He returned to St. Louis in 1964 to take the head pro spot at another new club in the area. What club was it that hired Dutch in 1964? 9. How many “first” US Amateur’s were held before C.B. Macdonald became the “first” US Amateur Champion? 10. This St. Louisan, who grew up in Kirkwood and won two USGA titles and played on the 1961 Walker Cup team, is generally considered the individual who developed the yardage book concept. 11. The first public course in the area was not Forest Park. Instead, it was another 9-hole course that opened in 1912 that holds that honor. Designed by famed architect Tom Bendelow, which course is it? 12. Normandie has claimed for decades they are the oldest 18-hole course in the area. Sadly, Glen Echo beat them out by four and one-half months (May to October) in 1901. However, neither of them had the area’s first 18-hole course. Can you name that course which came into existence in April 1901? 13. Judy Rankin remains one of the LPGA’s all-time great players. Growing up Judy Torluemke, she took lessons from Bob Green at Triple A. Judy dropped out of high school at age 17 to join the Tour. What area high school was she attending when she left to join the tour? 14. Ben Hogan won two events in the area, one in 1946 and the other in 1948. Can you name them? 15. St. Louis has had four men who have been president of the USGA. Can you name them? 16. The 1992 PGA at Bellerive CC, won by Nick Price, was his first Major victory. Another recent USGA Major winner set a course record with a 65 in the third round. Who set this course record? 17. In 1986, Quail Creek opened in Suson Park in south county. ST. LOUIS GOLF HISTORY THE ST. LOUIS OPEN 1942-1951
Despite the War, area golf continued to by played; part to provide a diversion from the war and in part to provide entertainment to those on the home front. While an event named the St. Louis Open had been played in the 1920s and the early 1930s, it had been a combination of a local amateur-pro event and, at times, part of the fledging professional Tour. The 1942 event was different; sponsored by the St. Louis District, which put up the prize money, it was a way to help provide some income for area professionals as well as showcase local amateurs and raise money for war bonds. The first two events were dominated by local standout Bob Cochran. The winner of four state titles and numerous local trophies, Cochran played the professional tour during 1943, winning once in Decatur with a 198 total for three rounds. He was also at Memphis in 1945 when Byron Nelson’s streak of 11 wins was stopped by amateur Fred Haas; Cochran finished tied for second, a shot ahead of Nelson! The 1944 event was won by professional Benny Richter. Head pro at Triple A GC and later at Bellerive, Benny was the National Lefthanded Champion. A talented clubmaker and teacher, many of the area’s top players went to see Benny when their game faltered. Cochran took another pair of titles in 1945 and 1946 before Frank Moore claimed the 1947 trophy. Moore was a journeyman professional, taking his game to a number of area clubs; and what a game it was. He qualified for seven US Open’s and a handful of PGA Championships. Among his local peers, there were few better. Another amateur took the 1948 and 1949 titles, Jimmy Jackson. The Kirkwood HS graduate, Jimmy was just 23 when he took the 1948 title. In the coming years he would play on the 1953 and 1955 Walker Cup, win back-to-back Trans-Miss crowns, play in 18 US Amateurs, five US Opens and five Masters. A four-time state champion, he is one of the greatest amateurs in the area of all-time. By 1950, national professionals got wind of the prize money offered for the St. Louis Open. With that, they all arrived in town. However, it was the Memphis dentist, Cary Middlecoff, who would take the title both years, once at Meadowbrook in 1950 and the second at Algonquin. By 1952, the demand for higher purses put the event out of business. But, it was certainly a great run.

METROPOLITAN OPEN ADAM SCHENK BIRDIES FINAL HOLE TO SNATCH VICTORY AFTER STEVEN IHM PULLS AHEAD ON #17 WITH BIRDIE ONLY TO FALTER ON THE PAR 4 18TH. Adam Schenk began the final round at the $100,000 Metropolitan Open with a comfortable four-shot lead. However, as the day wore on, the gap narrowed as players began to drop birdies and Schenk found his share of trouble on his march toward the winner’s circle. Playing in the last group with Steven Ihm, both players seemed to be guarding agains making mistakes. In the very hot day, play slowed to a crawl as they deliberated over each shot. Schenk blinked first as he bogeyed the second, then again on the par-5 sixth. Ihm made up for a bogey on the fourth with a birdie on number five; then repeating that on the eighth and ninth, as he finished his first nine at even par 35. Meanwhile, Schenk went out in Adam Schenk 37, tightening the match. Another bogey-birdie on the eleventh and twelfth kept the margin at two until the fifteenth, where Ihm dropped a birdie two. However, both players gave back a stroke on the sixteenth, leaving it to the final two holes to determine the champion. Schenk found bogey at seventeen while Ihm made a beautiful birdie three, putting him one ahead with one to play. As is often the case, it came down to shotmaking at the final hole. WHERE HAVE THEY GONE...THE AREA’S LOST COURSES RIVERVIEW CC / NORTH SHORE GC - 1916 -1995 Opened in 1916 as Riverview CC, it began as a 9-hole private facility. Members such as four-time state champion Jimmy Manion played out of Riverview and would represent it in area events with great success. For the 1922 season, the course had Robert Foulis, who built the original 9 holes, add 9 holes on the west side of Riverview Drive. It had an elegant membership with Mayor Henry Kiel and Albert Lambert counted on the rolls. A very good course, it hosted the 1928 Missouri Amateur. The beginning of The Great Depression in October 1929 saw the club suffer setbacks and in 1930, it was renamed North Shore. However, like many other area clubs, the impact of The Depression on membership took a heavy price and by the late 1930s, the club closed its doors. In the post-WWII era, the club went through a revival. Though dormant for over a decade, in the mid-1950s, Homer Herpel and Chic Adams were contracted to bring the course back and to add an additional 9 holes, bringing the total to 27 holes. The course added a membership category, running as a semi-private course. In the 1970s, it was considered a very fine facility, and one of the few located in the north county area available for public play. However, as expenses rose, keeping it as a 27-hole complex proved difficult. In 1983, it was an 18-hole course around 6,200 yards. Within a few years it was reduced to 9 holes, as the nine located west of Riverview Rd. on Coal Bank Road, were abandoned. It continued with nine holes through the spring of 1993. The flood that year proved devastating. Though five holes remained open at times, it eventually closed. It reopened briefly in 1994 when it was again hit by flood waters. Once again, in 1995, a group came in and attempted to salvage North Shore in 1971 with its 27 holes. Nine holes are adjacent to the course. After several weeks of digging to find irrigation the river and 18 additional holes on top of the bluff to the west, lines, they finally gave up. The ground has sat dormant since. Visitors to the site in the mid-90s could still make out the location of tees and greens, along with a few ball washers that remained. However, they are long since gone.

IT’S BEEN QUITE A SUMMER FOR TWO JUNIOR PLAYERS For Chris Ferris and Frankie Thomas, the golf season has been very successful. Having returned within the past few weeks from competing in the US Amateur at Colleton River Plantation Club, they got an up close and personal look at the best junior’s in the country; and it hit them both that they could now count themselves in that group. Chris has been busy qualifying for a number of events. He competed well at the MAGA Open, just barely missing the cut. His play at the MAGA Amateur was also quite good, finishing in a tie for 12th. Coming off a very successful high school season, where he won the Conference championship, Chris is also a two-time MAGA Junior champion. He characterizes his game as a “grinder;” managing to keep the ball in play and get it in the cup. As far as the US Junior - his first - it was, in his words, “Awesome.” The USGA did a great job of treating the players so well, making them feel like it was a Major! Had it not been for a bad Chris Ferris finish in round one, where he went five-over on the final four holes, his 75 might well have been a 70, placing him among the leaders. All in all, it was a great learning experience. He also had the opportunity to watch players like Oklahoma-bound Brad Delke, who was bombing drives on the practice facility like Dustin Johnson! (He’s the young man who arm wrestled Rory McIlroy and won.) Though he was competing in his second US Junior, Frankie Thomas was still a bit in awe of the event. He and Chris played a practice round with Andy Orischak, the eventual runner-up in the championship and spent time hearing his stories. Frankie was also paired with the medalist, Brandon Mancheno, as he posted a 6-under 138. Like Chris, Frankie’s goal at the Junior was to make the cut and advance to match play, where anything can happen, and often does. For Frankie, playing in a second US Junior is a tremendous boost of confidence. The 2014 Missouri Junior Champion is also a two-time All-State player and was first team All-Metro in 2015. He just returned from the PGA Junior at the Miramont CC in Bryan, Texas. He earned Frankie Thomas a spot in the event at a qualifying tournament at Persimmon Woods, winning the 36-hole qualifier. Frankie noted that he spends about 75% of his practice time on his short game, putting in particular. While his father, Scott, a former MGA Amateur Champion, get a lot of attention for helping Frankie with the mental side of the game, Frankie credits his mother, Lelah, for keeping things on an even keel. “She does the hard things around the house that enable dad and I to travel as much as we so I am able to play.”

GREAT ROOMMATE During the MAGA Open at St. Albans, we happened to speak with a lady following the Alex Moon-Mitchell Rutledge group. Turned out, it was Alex’s mother, Carrie Dietze. She flew up from Florida to watch him play. The 2012 graduate of Texas, Alex was on the Longhorn National Championship team that season. He has played the Canadian and Latin American Tour over the past three years, with one runner-up finish, four top 10s and 14 top 25s. His career is going like a lot of young players starting their career, grinding through each event; except he has a roommate, er...housemate, named Jordan Spieth! Alex was a senior when Jordan entered Texas and they became fast friends. When Jordan left during his sophomore year, his parents contacted Jordan’s mother to see if Alex Moon Alex would become Jordan’s roommate. At first it was a tiny apartment. After a short time, they moved into a little nicer townhome. They now live in Jordan’s 2.4 million bachelor home in the Preston Hollow section of Dallas. While their travels mean they aren’t home that much together, it doesn’t mean that when they are they don’t have fun. Kick back, order takeout and play Jordan’s golf simulator. In the meantime, Alex continues to work his way toward the PGA tour. It’s his goal to one day play with Jordan in the President’s Cup or another PGA Tour event!

Smiley Quick
One of the more colorful figures in area golf history was Lyman “Smiley” Quick. He grew up in Centralia, IL and played much of his early golf in that area and southern Illinois. He later moved to Southern California and resided there the rest of his life. In 1946, Smiley won the US Public Links Championship and came within a hair of winning the US Amateur, when he missed a 30-inch putt. He later played on the 1947 Walker Cup team. He turned professional in 1948 but never had the same degree of success, though he did win the 1950 Big Crosby with Sam Snead, Dave Douglas and Jack Burke Jr. He made most of his money hustling on the golf course with players such as Titanic Thompson. There was a story that he won a quarter of a million dollars from a bet with Joe Louis, who was known to love both golf and a side bet or two.
JIM TOM BLAIR The trophy awarded to the winner of the Metropolitan Amateur is named for one of the area’s best players, Jim Tom Blair. However, since Jim Tom last played competitively over forty years ago, it’s worth noting what not only made him a great player, but also a great individual. Jim Tom grew up in a very political family; his father was Missouri Governor James Blair, who served from 1957-1961. In addition, his grandfather sat on the Missouri Supreme Court. It would have been easy for Jim Tom to enter politics, however, the love of his life was golf and, as they say, he was good at it! He attended Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State) and was a member of the golf team. Winner of the 1952 and 1955 Missouri Amateur, Jim Tom also won the Men’s District title on three occasions. He qualified for 11 US Amateur’s, reaching the quarterfinals in 1957. He played in eight US Open’s and three British Amateur’s. He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 and is a member of the St. Louis Golf Hall of Fame. One of his highlights was in 1956 while, as an amateur, he competed on the PGA Tour at the Phoenix Open. Playing in the last group, the event was won by Cary Middlecoff, with Jim Tom finishing in third position, as he posted an even par round. He was also one of the founders of the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association, making his role in continuing the spirit of amateur golf that much more significant. He passed away in December 2010 at age 79.
