Music Director
Richard Gill Richard Gill is one of Australia’s pre-eminent and most admired conductors specialising in opera, musical theatre and vocal and choral training and is internationally respected as a music educator. He is Music Director of Victorian Opera and Artistic Director of the Education Program for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has been Artistic Director of Oz Opera, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, and the Adviser for the Musica Viva In Schools program. Richard has received numerous accolades, including an Order of Australia Medal, the Bernard Heinze Award, Honorary Doctorates from the Edith Cowan UWA and ACU, and the Australia Council’s Don Banks Award. PROGRAMS Orchestral program
The heart of National Music Camp is the Orchestral Program. For two weeks you will be engaged in an unbelievably thrilling musical pursuit to create memorable performances of superb orchestral music, honing your skills and knowledge of orchestral music-making in combination with other exceptional young musicians. The program encompasses all aspects of the preparation and rehearsal of full-scale symphonic or chamber orchestra repertoire with inspirational direction from renowned conductors, and specialised guidance from your instrumental tutors. You will perform in one of the two full symphony orchestras or the string chamber orchestra. The culminating concerts are sure to bring the house down, and the buzz of it will stay with you forever. CONDUCTORS
Bruno Weil Elizabeth Wallfisch Fabian Russell German born Bruno Weil has received worldwide fame as one of the leading conductors of music of Viennese Classicism. He is principal guest conductor of the Tafelmusik Orchestra and music director of the Cappella Coloniensis, and his conducting engagements have included performances with leading symphony orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, The Dresden Staatskapelle, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. From 1992 – 2010, Weil was Music Director of the Carmel Bach Festival, California from 1992 – 2010 and was Artistic Director of the period instrument festival “KLANG & RAUM” (Sound and space) in Irsee, Bavaria from 1993 – 2011. In 2001, he was appointed conducting Professor in Munich at the State Academy for Music and Theatre. A leading interpreter of music on the baroque and classical violins, Elizabeth Wallfisch is a favourite with both audiences and orchestras. Her appearances are marked by a daring and spontaneous approach to performance that results in electrifying music making. Renowned not only as a prominent interpreter of 17th, 18th and 19th century violin music, she is also an inspiring leader and director. Elizabeth Wallfisch has been a Guest Director/Leader on the violin with many of the world’s orchestras including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Netherlands Bach Society, Tafelmusik – Canada, Carmel Bach Festival Orchestra. Her long and impressive discography offers a window onto her expansive musical world from the High Baroque Italian violinist-composers such as Vivaldi, Corelli, and the Classical and Romantic Greats from Mozart to Brahms. Fabian Russell has been at the forefront of the Australian classical music industry over the last twenty five years as Conductor, Artistic Director, teacher and orchestral musician, holding positions with Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. In 2002 he founded The Orchestra Project - a training orchestra for pre-eminent young Australian musicians. Over the past ten years Fabian has been engaged to conduct AYO, Melbourne Symphony, Sydney Symphony Sinfonia, ANAM and most of Australia’s youth and university orchestras. He was Artistic Director of Melbourne Youth Orchestra and is currently the Principal Conductor of the Monash Academy Orchestra. He was awarded the Churchill Fellowship in 2011 and is an international adviser to the Australian Music Foundation. Under the leadership of Lou Oppenheim, Director of Operations, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, you will be part of the dynamic operations team that is at the centre of all the action of AYO National Music Camp, participating as part of the organisational powerhouse. The knowledge and experience you gain will equip you with a secure foundation for a successful career in orchestral management.
If you are drawn to communicating your love of music through words, this unique program introduces you to the diverse ways in which music is talked and written about. Words About Music has a great track record of inspiring and setting people up for careers in broadcasting, writing and arts administration. Throughout AYO National Music Camp, the program encompasses program note writing, promotional and copy-writing, interview techniques, website development and radio production. You’ll have a chance to be involved in all of these things, helping to enhance the special atmosphere of Camp through newsletters, blogs and radio broadcasts.
For the young composers themselves, there can be few experiences more powerful than the engagement with the talents gathered at AYO National Music Camp. With its emphasis on practical performance outcomes, the Composition Program provides a fantastic opportunity for the aspiring composer.

Participants will be eligible for the Kenneth Tribe Arts Administration Scholarship to assist with the cost of participating. Fellowship opportunities with the Sydney Symphony, Musica Viva and Oz Opera will also be offered to participants. CORE FUNDAMENTALS TO Refined Sophistication Sound Production Program TUTOR
Jim Atkins Started in 2011, this new program looks at music production as well as interview technique and editing associated with broadcasts. The participants will record all National Music Camp concerts and work closely with the ABC for the concert broadcasts.

NERVOUS ANTICIPATION TO COMPLETE BELONGING Hannah/18 I love the Australian Youth Orchestra for so many reasons. It is so easy to lose sight of what I believe to be one of the truest purposes of music: being afforded the freedom to express emotion which cannot otherwise be expressed in words, and to share this vulnerability, this precious gift, with other people. For me, the Australian Youth Orchestra allowed me to reconnect with my deep and abiding love of music, for music’s own sake. The AYO places a high value on technical and musical excellence, but within the context of playing amid a vibrant group of young people, whose own passion, determination and ensuing drive for what they do not only spurs you on in your own musical pursuits, but with whom you form immensely supportive friendships.
Playing with the Australian Youth Orchestra has also provided me with countless opportunities to work with conductors, tutors and performers of a formidable calibre, whose professional insight has proved invaluable for my musical education and experience. Thanks to the AYO, as well as the encouragement in such ventures I have received from my family and my violin teacher, I have been further convinced that music is definitely the path down which I desire to travel, hopefully for the rest of my life.

The AUSTRALIAN YOUTH APPLY ORCHESTRA NOW! In 2013, members of the Australian Youth Orchestra will travel to Europe to perform at prestigious summer festivals under the baton of celebrated conductor Christoph Eschenbach. The AYO will be joined by virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell in concerts first at the Sydney Opera House and Hamer Hall Melbourne, then in Europe at the Konzerthaus in Berlin and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Following the popular “style workshops” of recent years and in preparation for this tour, the AYO will also convene in February for an intensive chamber music and orchestral summer course. Led by some of the world’s leading string, wind, brass, and percussion players each section of the orchestra will work closely to refine their ensemble skills and come together for a performance and recording of major orchestral works. This really is a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity guaranteed to propel your playing to new heights of musicianship and performance.

Christoph Eschenbach has been acclaimed for his creative insight and dynamic energy, as a conductor, collaborator, and ardent champion of young musicians. He is currently Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. He regularly performs with the Wiener Philharmoniker, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dresden Staatskapelle, and the Boston Symphony amongst many others.

Joshua Bell Joshua Bell has enchanted audiences worldwide with his breathtaking virtuosity and tone of rare beauty. His restless curiosity and multifaceted musical interests have taken him in exciting new directions which have earned him the rare title of “classical music superstar.” Often referred to as the poet of the violin, Bell is the recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize and is the newly named Music Director of The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. Today he is equally at home as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestra leader and composer who performs his own cadenzas to several of the major concerto repertoire. “Bell,” Gramophone stated simply, “is dazzling.”

AYO CHAMBER PLAYERS one of the peak programs for players seriously engaged in chamber music, AYO Chamber Players offers you the opportunity to learn from and work with some of the world’s greatest chamber musicians. Integrated into the Musica Viva Festival in 2013 and directed by cellist Pieter Wispelwey, you’ll be immersed in an international celebration of chamber music. Music Director
Pieter Wispelwey Pieter Wispelwey is among the first of a generation of performers who are equally at ease on the modern or the period cello. His acute stylistic awareness, combined with a truly original interpretation and a phenomenal technical mastery, has won the hearts of critics and public alike in repertoire ranging from JS Bach to Schnittke. Pieter has appeared as soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony, London Philharmonic, Hallé orchestra, and the Sydney Symphony. His discography displays an impressive line up of over twenty recordings, six of which attracted major international awards.

AYO String Quartet Central Victoria The string quartet is considered by many to be the pinnacle of chamber music, and something many string players aspire to master. This regional residency offers an intensive period of ‘together’ time for a newly formed or established quartet, in the beautiful surrounds of central Victoria. This program allows the group to rehearse, practice and perform regularly, as well as reach out to regional communities through leading workshops and master classes with local groups. A specialist string tutor will be selected to mentor the quartet.
AYO Wind Quintet Regional NSW This year, the AYO Wind Quintet will come together to work intensively under the guidance of a specialist wind tutor. This is your chance to explore challenging repertoire for this ensemble, and share your knowledge and expertise with members of the local community.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra String Fellowships In two stages, the MSO String Fellowships begin with an intensive week of one-on-one coaching from your MSO mentor, concerto and excerpt workshops and professional development sessions to develop the skills and knowledge you will need to enter the life of a professional orchestra. You will rehearse alongside your mentor and the Fellowship will culminate in an audition for casual engagement with the MSO. Following a successful casual audition selected Fellows will be invited to participate in Stage Two and will be engaged by the MSO for up to three weeks work as a casual musician performing under the close guidance of your mentor.
Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Wind, Brass and Percussion Fellowships The TSO Wind Brass & Percussion Fellowships are offered in partnership with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. With expert coaching from a TSO musician, you will be guided through the preparation for an audition and at the conclusion of the week undertake a casual audition for the TSO. You’ll receive one-onone assistance in preparing repertoire and attend professional development seminars. In the second week of the Fellowship, you’ll join with other AYO musicians for the special performance project, TSO & AYO In Concert.
TSO & AYO In Concert This annual concert project has become a season highlight in Hobart seeing AYO musicians join with the full Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra to perform exciting works for a large-scale orchestra. Conductor

The Ernest V. Llewellyn Memorial Fund Annual Awards for string players Following Ernest Llewellyn’s death in 1982 this Fund was established by a group of his friends and colleagues to honour his life and work, and has as its principal objective the advancement of string playing in Australia. Annual awards provide support for young string players wishing to undertake advanced studies, or to attend master classes, workshops or seminars such as AYO programs, in Australia and overseas. The late Ernest Llewellyn CBE had a distinguished musical career as one of Australia’s most notable violinists, as well as a conductor, chamber music performer and teacher. For 16 years he was concertmaster of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. In 1965 he was appointed founding director of the Canberra School of Music, and musical director of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, positions he held for the following 15 years. Ernest Llewellyn was involved in programs presented by the Australian Youth Orchestra, in particular as tutor, soloist and director at AYO National Music Camps. You do not need to be an applicant or participant in AYO programs to apply. Full details of the application process, audition requirements and grant guidelines are available on our website at www.ayo.com.au The Richard Pollett Memorial Award Richard Pollett, a former violinist of the Australian Youth Orchestra, died tragically in a road accident on 27 September 2011. He was 25. The Richard Pollett Memorial Award has been established by Richard’s family and close friends in association with the Australian Youth Orchestra to honour his memory. Discretionary awards will be made annually to provide support and encouragement to young violinists who display outstanding personal and musical attributes.

Apply online at www.ayo.com.au or submit the application form on page 31 to apply for one, two, or ALL of the 2013 AYO programs. Applicants are required to: ——Meet the eligibility criteria as specified for each program; and ——Make themselves available for the full period listed for each program; and ——Be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Australia Instruments You may audition on the following instruments: flute, piccolo, oboe, cor anglais, clarinet, E flat clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, contrabassoon, French horn, trumpet, tenor trombone, bass trombone, tuba, percussion, timpani, harp*, piano*, violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Wind instrument candidates are encouraged to also audition on their respective doubling instruments – piccolo, cor anglais, E flat clarinet, bass clarinet and contrabassoon. AYO may be able to assist you in sourcing these instruments for the purpose of the audition. * There will be no live auditions for harp, piano or existing chamber ensembles. See recorded audition information on page 28. Application Fee A non-refundable fee of $82 is charged to each applicant to cover administration and processing costs. Only one application fee is required, regardless of how many programs you wish to apply for or how many instruments you apply on. Program Fees FULL payment of the fee/s is required upon confirmation of acceptance of each program following a successful audition and program offer. Withdrawal from any program after your acceptance, for any reason other than certified medical grounds, will result in the forfeit of fees at the rate of $50 per calendar month, from 30 November 2012 for withdrawal from AYO National Music Camp or 31 December 2012 for all other programs. If withdrawal occurs less than 4 weeks prior to a program commencing then the full fee may be forfeited. Payment Plan AYO is able to assist you with paying your fees by setting up a payment plan. Full details will be sent out with program offers following a successful audition.

AUDITION & INTERVIEW REQUIREMENTS Live Auditions for Performance-based Programs
All applicants please note that:
Each instrumentalist (except piano and harp) is required to attend a live audition in order to be eligible for 2013 AYO programs.
——Approval to submit a recorded audition is at the discretion of the AYO ——Applicants are strongly advised to seek appropriate advice on how best to make an effective & successful recording. It is in your best interests to provide the highest quality recording possible to ensure you are accurately assessed ——The AYO is not responsible for and cannot waive deadlines for recordings lost or damaged in the mail. Please use adequate packaging and ensure your recording is clearly labeled
All applicants (except percussion and timpani) are required to perform a short piece of their own choice, without an accompanist. It is recommended that candidates choose a work (or section of a work), which addresses the following points. ——Clearly demonstrates the applicant’s technical proficiency ——Emphasises the applicant’s musicianship ——Perform contrasting musical material ——No more than 5 minutes in length Applicants are not required to perform complete works - a carefully selected passage of a longer piece is acceptable. Due to time constraints, the audition panel may elect to hear only part of the candidate’s piece. Applicants are strongly advised to check the selection of their piece with their teacher. Orchestral excerpts – Applicants are required to prepare and perform a set of AYO orchestral excerpts. These excerpts will be available for download from the AYO website upon completion of the application and payment process. The sooner you apply, the sooner you will receive your excerpts! Sight-reading – Applicants will be asked to sightread a short piece in the audition. AYO will make an audiovisual recording of all live auditions for archival purposes. Recorded Auditions Three categories of applicants are eligible to submit recorded auditions. 1. STRING QUARTETS, WIND QUINTETS & PIANO TRIOS applying for AYO Chamber Players and STRING QUARTETS & WIND QUINTETS applying for the AYO Regional Residencies program must submit an audiovisual recording of a recent performance, or a recording made specifically for the AYO audition. 2. All PIANO and HARP applicants must submit an audiovisual recorded audition. 3. Applicants from regional areas, or those who are unable to audition on their scheduled day for certified medical reasons, may submit an audiovisual recorded audition. Details on how to prepare your recording will be emailed to you once your application has been received. The only acceptable audiovisual recording format is DVD. It is essential that the recording of your own-choice piece is unaccompanied and specifically recorded for the 2013 AYO audition process. If you are unable to audition on your instruments scheduled day please phone the AYO on 02 9252 3855 or toll free 1300 668 500 as soon as possible to confirm details for submitting a recorded audition.
The final date for the receipt of all recorded auditions is Wednesday 1 August 2012. Materials received after this date will not be eligible for consideration. Recorded materials will not be returned unless requested. Non-Instrumental Programs If you wish to apply for Arts Administration, Words About Music, Sound Production or Composition programs at AYO National Music Camp please refer to pages 10 and 11 for details and application requirements. The Australian Youth Orchestra’s live auditions for 2013 programs will be held by an independent panel of music professionals. Please note all dates are subject to change.
