From the team at Tropic Estate Agents, welcome to Palm Cove! As the local go-to agency, Matthew and his team are committed to understanding your unique
If the World’s Best Beach* isn’t enough for you, don’t worry, Palm Cove has much more that its exquisite sandy shores. This quaint little seaside village on the palmfringed shoreline of the Coral Sea ticks all the boxes for today’s traveller. Palm Cove offers a year-round tropical climate, boutique hotels, luxury resorts, awardwinning restaurants, soothing day spas, and two World Heritage-listed natural wonders nearby, and it’s only 25 minutes drive from Cairns Airport!
Palm Cove has been offering visitors laidback luxury since the 1950s and has lost none of her charm. Chic restaurants and swank hotels share the shoreline with magnificent 500-year-old Melaleuca trees and a gorgeous esplanade famous for its “tunnel” of coconut palms.
Kick your shoes off and refresh your body and soul by connecting with yourself and the natural surroundings. Indulge yourself in town with some retail therapy or great fresh food. Take it easy fishing or take a trip. Situated half-way between Cairns and Port Douglas, Palm Cove is a great base to explore tropical north Queensland. The world-famous Great Barrier Reef, the world’s oldest rainforest in the Daintree, and the higher ground of the beautiful Atherton Tablelands are all within easy reach.
The calm waters of Palm Cove make it ideal for water sports. Get wet kayaking, kiteboarding or paddleboarding. Or stay high and dry and explore the network of scenic bike trails for healthy, safe family fun.
Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, visit Palm Cove and unwind in this chic coastal resort that has a sleepy seaside village at its heart.

• Yirrganydji people used them for medicine, cooking, fire starting, tools, water and shelter.
• Captain Cook’s botanist Joseph Banks accurately estimated them to be 400 years old when visiting in 1770.
• A bounty of $10,000 was placed for each tree damaged during construction of the Ramada Resort in the mid-1980s.
• They are now protected, and strict laws enforce their preservation.
• Their “paper bark” peels in layers to protect the tree from parasitic plants and animals.
Melaleuca Resort in beautiful Palm Cove is the perfect beachfront resort to escape the hustle and bustle, unwind, relax and rejuvenate. Set amongst an award-winning, vibrant and lush tropical garden populated with exotic Australian native birdlife, featuring a lagoon style walk-in pool, Melaleuca Resort is directly opposite the beach.
Melaleuca Resort’s clean and comfortable one-bedroom, fully self-contained apartments feature a relaxing lounge, large balcony with spectacular views of the Coral Sea and gardens. Guests call Melaleuca their second home, returning with friends and family to introduce them to Melaleuca’s old-fashioned hospitality and the beauty of Palm Cove.
It is believed that the Yirrganydji Aboriginal people were the sole inhabitants of the Palm Cove region, up to 60,000 years ago, until Captain Cook made a brief stop to replenish his water supply in 1770.
In 1873, the G.E. Dalrymple Northeast Coast Expedition stopped to access a freshwater lagoon and were immediately prevented from doing so by a large group of Yirrganydji men brandishing spears. A
battle ensued and Dalrymple’s men repelled the Aboriginal men with gunfire.
The earliest documented landowner in the area was the Church of England under Archdeacon Campbell who, it is assumed, planted the iconic palm trees that still line the beachfront today. A land purchase from Campbell in 1918 was made by Albert Veivers and family who referred to the area as Double Island or Palm Beach. They attempted to raise livestock on the land, however crocodile attacks on the stock led to the plan being abandoned.
During and immediately after World War II, Palm Cove was used as a training base for the Australian armed forces and, as a result, naval mines were washing up onto the beaches well into the 1950s.
The resultant publicity, and Palm Cove’s beauty, led to an increase in visitors. A Progress Association was then formed, and the name of Palm Cove was chosen, although the name wasn’t officially declared until 1980.
The opening of Cairns International Airport in 1984 helped realise Palm Cove’s potential as a travel destination, leading to the establishment of several international hotels and a boom in visitors.
Today Palm Cove is internationally recognised as a tourism getaway and in 2024 the prestigious Conde Nast Traveller Magazine voted Palm Cove the World’s Best Beach.
The opening of Stage 1 of the muchanticipated Wangetti Trail marks an exciting new chapter for hikers and mountain bikers in far north Queensland. Stretching 7.8 kilometres from the Palm Cove Jetty to Ellis Beach, this stunning section is rated as Grade 3, making it suitable for most ages and fitness levels. A one-way journey typically takes around
three hours for walkers and 45 minutes for mountain bike riders.
The Wangetti Trail promises to be one of Australia’s leading adventure-based ecotourism experiences, attracting outdoor enthusiasts from around the globe, especially when the full 94-kilometre track to Port Douglas is complete, which is expected in late 2026.
