THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

A visit to Port Douglas and the Daintree is not complete without spending time visiting one of the natural wonders of the world – the Great Barrier Reef. The reef spans more than 2,000 kilometres, has more than 3,000 individual reefs and coral cays and some of the world’s most idyllic tropical islands. It’s the only living structure on Earth that can be seen from outer space. Great Barrier Reef trips, full-

day and half-day, depart daily from both Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation (subject to availability). You can explore this amazing underwater world on a snorkel tour, with no experience necessary. Port Douglas also offers scuba diving courses, or multi-dive packages for certified divers. Or, for those looking to stay high and dry, sailing trips, glass bottom boat and semisubmersible tours are available.

Snorkelling is the most popular way to experience the Great Barrier Reef. Marvel at spectacular coral formations thousands of years in the making and an amazing array of exotic rainbowcoloured tropical fish.

The Great Barrier Reef’s warm waters are a marine magnet attracting creatures ranging from birds to 100-tonne humpback whales. The currents and trade winds bring them from all over the world, including whales and dolphins attracted by the warm tropical waters. Plankton drifts towards the reef and provides food for whales. The warm waters also attract seahorses, barramundi, cod and Maori wrasse.

When you think of Port Douglas and the Great Barrier Reef, one name comes to mind – Quicksilver Cruises. Part of Port’s fabric for over 40 years, Quicksilver is known for their multi award-winning Great Barrier Reef experiences and is one of Australia’s pioneering eco-certified operators. From day trips to a spacious activity platform at the spectacular Agincourt Reef, dive and snorkel adventures visit three different sites with Silversonic, or spend a lazy day on the idyllic Low Isles aboard Wavedancer. You’ll be spoilt for choice. And now you can discover

the magic of scuba with a pool dive at Quicksilver Dive’s 5-star PADI training centre in the heart of Port. Professional dive instructors will teach you the basic skills for an exciting and fun experience. Once you’ve completed the Discover Scuba Pool Dive, you aren’t certified but will be ready to do an introductory dive in the magnificent Great Barrier Reef or even go on to get certified.

Calypso Port Douglas Reef Cruises offer a variety of family cruises, reef tours, and dive trips to the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkelling and diving the World Heritage Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is an adventure. Exploring the coral gardens in search of weird and wonderful marine creatures at Opal Reef and Agincourt Reef will keep you busy for hours.

Three sites are visited daily providing an insight into this large, unique and extraordinary living organism that is the Great Barrier Reef. Calypso’s customdesigned vessels offer the very best in comfort with spacious decks, day-bed style seating, air-conditioned saloons and submerged platforms, extending the width of the vessel, to allow for easy access to and from the water. Calypso also operates half-day snorkelling tours to the Low Isles as well as full luxury rainforest tours in their Mercedes Benz bus, with no more than 11 guests.

Pristine reef

Low Isles consists of two islands. Woody Island is an uninhabited coral/mangrove island while Low Island is a sandy coral cay typical of the Great Barrier Reef. Located only 15 kilometres off the coast of Port Douglas, Low Island’s picturesque setting with a lighthouse, thatched beach umbrellas on a wide, sandy beach, and lush vegetation is simply stunning. Port Douglas tours to Low Isles offer options to suit the most discerning traveller. Sail from Port Douglas on a full or half-day excursion or, for those looking for a little luxury, some boats offer ‘adults only’ experiences with small passenger numbers.

Another popular way to discover the Great Barrier Reef is to take to the seas and enjoy the tranquility of sailing. Visit Low Isles or Mackay Coral Cay while you sip champagne and nibble on canapes as you watch the sun set over the mountains of the Daintree Rainforest. Tours to the Great Barrier Reef will take you to sites that make up the most pristine parts of the World Heritage area, including coral cays, Low Isles, and the Ribbon Reefs.

If you’re seeking a luxurious option with pure sailing on beautiful yachts and small numbers of guests, join Sailaway Reef & Island Tours. They offer either a full-day experience to the island, suitable for all ages, or enjoy a later start with the Afternoon Sunset Sail for adults only, combining snorkelling and sunset sailing.

Their team of marine biologists will offer expert guiding and take you on a snorkel tour over the coral gardens to spot turtles, beautiful corals and a variety of marine life.

A guided Low Isles Heritage Walk is also an opportunity to fully appreciate the history and authenticity of this idyllic tropical island. When looking out to sea at night from the Port Douglas Daintree coast, Low Isles Lighthouse can be clearly seen with one white flash every ten seconds. This has been consistent since 1878, a recognisable “heartbeat” of the Great Barrier Reef for over 147 years! Sailaway is a local family business, passionate about the environment and sustainability and sets the standard high for nature-based experiences of the Great Barrier Reef. Attracting discerning, environmentally-conscious visitors and primarily powered by wind, Sailaway has been carbon neutral since 2012 and nationally awarded for best practice and sustainability. Looking for more adventure on the wild side? Sailaway to the Outer Reef to Mackay Coral Cay for the ultimate snorkelling experience at two reef locations and explore the aqua waters of this stunning reef system. Sailaway’s marine biologists will give an entertaining reef presentation, guided snorkel safaris and glass bottom boat tours. It’s a fully inclusive day with delicious food and beverages.

Explore the reef

MOSSMAN

Mossman is a picturesque little township 20 kilometres north of Port Douglas, traditionally known for its sugar cane and friendly locals. However, today Mossman has a burgeoning reputation for Aboriginal culture, art galleries, and is best known as the gateway to the spectacular Mossman Gorge.

Just five minutes west of town is the Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre, your access point to Mossman Gorge in the World Heritage-listed Daintree National Park. A shuttle bus takes visitors from the centre to the gorge. From there, choose from four walking tracks, cool off with a swim or enjoy a picnic. The Mossman River tumbles through lush rainforest, making its

way over huge granite boulders that line the gorge, creating freshwater swimming holes and stunning photo opportunities.

A must-do is the Cultural Centre’s guided Ngadiku (Nar-di-gul) Dreamtime Walk tour. Get a deeper understanding of the ancient rainforest, learn about traditional plant uses and gain a rare insight into the special relationship the local Kuku Yalanji people have with the rainforest on this 90-minute tour.

Visitors can also choose from four selfguided walks, ranging from the easy 270 metre Baral Marrjanga walk to the moderate Rainforest Circuit Track, which is 2.4 kilometres return.

Shannonvale Tropical Fruit Winery is a boutique, family-run winery producing tropical fruit wines from organic fruits grown and harvested on the property at Shannonvale, just 20 minutes north of Port Douglas and 10 minutes from Mossman. For more than 20 years the Woodall family has been making awardwinning wines, from very dry wines to medium flavoured, full-bodied and port-style wines. Made from mango, lychee, passionfruit, lime, black sapote and other rare fruits, all are expertly produced to commercial standards. All wines are single-fruit wines, not blends, and the fruits, all grown organically in their orchard, have big flavours that

are retained in the wine. Seasonally harvested, locally-grown fruits are handcrafted into delicious, highquality wines, proudly presented by the charming owners for your tasting pleasure. Distinctive flavours such as ginger, the perfect pairing to authentic Thai cuisine, jaboticaba and passionfruit, the ideal accompaniment to a good cheese platter, all are available to try at the cellar door.

CRUISE THE DAINTREE RIVER

The Daintree River, winding through the oldest living rainforest in the world, is one of the longest rivers on the Australian east coast at 140 kilometres. It harbours 35 mangrove fish species and its lush swamp forest attracts rare and locally prolific bird life, frogs and insect species.

Fishing the Daintree River is an outstanding experience. There’s a huge diversity of species from the saltwater ecosystem at the river mouth, to the brackish water in the middle reaches and the freshwater in the upper parts.

Cruise the Daintree River on a guided tour spotting wildlife while you get

closer to nature. This is the best way of seeing and understanding the river’s ecosystem and wildlife.

Greater Daintree Wildlife Cruises has been cruising the Daintree since 1979 and have two launch points from which to start your river adventure.

The Daintree River is the habitat of the Estuarine (saltwater) crocodile and wildlife cruises on the river have become renowned for their success in croc-spotting. The Daintree River has a population of about 70 adult crocodiles, some up to six metres in length, and there’s nothing more exciting than seeing these prehistoric monsters in the wild!

Tours are conducted in the conservation zone of the river, which means feeding the crocodiles is not allowed. Crocodile-spotting and wildlife river tours leave from various points along the river, including the ferry crossing and Daintree Village.

DISCOVER THE DAINTREE

When it comes to exotic flora and fauna, the Daintree Rainforest really is the sparkling jewel in Australia’s crown. In the heart of this paradise, the world’s oldest lowland tropical rainforest, is the Daintree Discovery Centre where adventure, wonder, education, culture, sustainability and the natural environment come together for an unforgettable experience.

For three decades, this eco-certified attraction has been welcoming visitors of all ages, allowing them to safely explore all levels of the Daintree Rainforest from the critter-rich forest floor to the very top of the rainforest canopy.

Highlights include the 23-metre-high Canopy Tower, offering five different viewing platforms that await your ascent up 112 steps. Discover the Cassowary Circuit and Bushtucker Trail, where you will have the chance to see ancient King ferns or find yourself standing beneath a huge 500-year-old Strangler fig tree. You can also explore the newly opened Jarrabina Terraces, an elevated trail offering expansive views, unique

photo opportunities, and another perspective on this incredible rainforest environment.

For a closer look at the forest’s intricate biodiversity, the 11-metrehigh Aerial Walkway offers an up-close view of Daintree’s giant basket ferns teeming with hidden birds, frogs and even possums.

Situated in a known cassowary corridor, the Centre presents a chance of seeing one of these exceptional birds in the wild.

The Centre also offers the chance to engage with live jungle bugs, discover aquatic wonders in the freshwater aquarium, go on Country with Juan Walker in an immersive 3D hologram experience, all while having plenty of fun.

Alternatively, unleash your inner adventurer in the Jurassic Forest, where dinosaurs will transport you to a prehistoric world where dinosaurs once ruled.

The Daintree Discovery Centre has received the prestigious Ecotourism Australia’s Gecko Award for Ecotourism and the United Nations Award for

Daintree Discovery Centre

Leadership in Sustainability. At the Discovery Centre, they don’t just preach conservation, they live it.

As part of the experience, visitors are given an audio guide, available in eight languages, as well as a 68-page guide to take home. Children will have an amazing time, with their own special interpretive tour and displays, plus activities that are entertaining and creative. There is an interpretive centre with touch screens, a cutting-edge VR zone, all-ability access for prams, strollers and wheelchairs, and gorgeous views from the coffee shop overlooking McLean’s Creek. The Centre’s commitment to accessibility is evident throughout, with inclusive pathways, multilingual audio guides and engaging virtual reality experiences designed for all visitors.
