PRINCIPAL

SIMON BROOKS 2023 has been the year of the Care:Mvmt (Care Movement) at AISM. The idea behind the Care:Mvmt is actually rather simple. We want to create a world for our children which is built around ‘care’ - a community where we all take responsibility for caring for ourselves, for others and for the world we live in. One thing we know for sure is how much our teachers here at AISM care for our students. From our three-year-olds in the ELC to our graduating Year 12s, AISM teachers are trained to put thinking front and centre in every lesson they teach, inspired by philosophy and practice from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. It shows! For the second year running, our HSC results were the best in the school’s history, with an impressive 50% of our HSC results in the top two bands. As a centre of academic excellence, we continue to go from strength to strength.

‘Taking care of yourself is the most powerful way to begin to take care of others’ - Bryant Mcgill As part of our focus on Care for Self, 2023 brought in numerous opportunities for our students to become involved in our Just15 movement. The idea behind ‘Just15’ is this: all it takes is just 15 minutes of exercise per day - something that gets the heart pounding and the blood flowing - to make a huge difference to our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. This year students have embraced opportunities for just 15 minutes of running, just 15 minutes of circuit training, just 15 minutes of wisdom and just 15 minutes of dance! Beyond Just15, teachers have been working hard to build opportunities for self care into learning time. In the Junior School, our teachers are trained to deliver the Smiling Minds program, creating daily mindful moments for our children, and investigating important topics such as self-awareness, curiosity, growth mindset and resilience. In the Middle and Senior School, staff were delighted to experience a sequence of professional learning workshops on the topic of ‘Slow Looking’ with Harvard researcher Shari Tishman, helping them to create opportunities for students to slow down, look closely, notice detail, ask questions and wonder.

‘You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you’ - John Bunyan In terms of Care for Others, students have enjoyed numerous opportunities to be of service. We have continued to welcome our friends from the Chin Community to our campus, and enjoyed having them teach us a cultural dance which was showcased on our magnificent International Day. On RUOK Day, Middle and Senior School students explored the concept of ‘Pay It Forward’, creating podcasts to promote the idea of adding a little joy and love to others’ lives, and learnt the art of reflective listening, an important skill which makes others feel heard, valued and supported. During the day, both staff and students offered a whole variety of different 15 minute workshops designed to add value to each other’s lives, including Mandala art, badminton, doodling, photography, origami, calligraphy, chess, frisbee, juggling, and the list goes on.

In the Junior School, weekly lessons in our Living HQ have inspired our children to become the drivers of our composting and recycling initiatives. They have also developed a sophisticated understanding of the germination process, becoming actively involved from gathering seeds through to planting and crop care. On our superb Eco Day in Term 4, we were excited to unveil our brand new student-driven Eco Code, promoting organic composting, campus greening, recycling and environmental education. Our students also worked incredibly hard to create a landscaped green area in our carpark, with hundreds of small rocks spelling out the word CARE to inspire us all when we enter the grounds of the school! 2023 has been an amazing year and AISM is a wonderful school. It is a school full of opportunities to learn and grow as people - opportunities including Athletics Carnivals, Swimming Carnivals, musicals, Green Week, camps, STEM Week, Book Week, International Day, student dances, and many more. I do hope you enjoy the reports and photographs in this Yearbook and I know that the school will continue to go from strength to strength in 2024 and beyond!

MICHELLE CHAPLIN My days at AISM begin with smiles all round! I try to greet our students with a welcome and a smile so they know they are a part of the AISM family and we are glad to see them every single day. This sets our students up for a successful learning day - a day where they feel they can achieve anything and that their dreams can truly come true!

As the year has progressed there have been opportunities to stretch and challenge ourselves and to dare us to be the best we can be!

We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths. - Walt Disney 2023 has been the year where we have truly opened the doors to opportunities as we have fully emerged from the pandemic and embraced all the experiences available to us. We have students from Foundation to Year 5 involved in enrichment classes, Maths challenges and sporting competitions. Our first ever Junior School Tournament of the Minds Team from Year 3 to Year 5, our amazing Junior School rock band with their first ever live performance to a big audience, our Living HQ and worm farms, a fully waste free campus (nearly) and many students achieving beyond their dreams not necessarily a first but amazing to see! Visit our ELC and witness our youngest learners asking the big questions and the “why questions” - so much curiosity in such little people! The more we seek to know the more we will know… curiosity will lead us to magical places. Just ask the AISM ELC students. Education is a shared commitment between dedicated teachers and staff, motivated students and enthusiastic parents, all with high expectations. My heartfelt thanks to the AISM community for a wonderful 2023, full of academic success, community spirit and the joy of cherishing precious moments of learning together. As beneficiaries of wonderful learning opportunities like these, it is no surprise that AISM students continue to achieve outstanding HSC results every year. Once again, our 2022 HSC results were the best in the school’s history, placing us in the prestigious top 100 list of HSC schools in the world. One of our students was placed in the global top 5 for his performance in HSC Mathematics Extension 1, and another was placed first in the world for her performance in Society and Culture.

Swimming Carnivals, we also came away with a host of medals after the inter-school AIMS event, with gold in the Under-13 Boys’ High Jump, the Under-15 Girls’ 400m and the Over-15 Boys’ Long Jump. We have also enjoyed a wonderful year of community building in the Middle and Senior School. As always, our International Day was a triumph, allowing - us to celebrate and showcase our diverse community of learners from over 40 different nations. We also hosted two inaugural community-building events for our students in 2023. In Term 3, our Senior School students had a wonderful time at the ‘Vintage Hollywood’ Senior School Dance. This event was an amazing opportunity for our students to build relationships, develop their leadership skills, dress up, have fun, eat some amazing food and dance! In Term 4, it was time for the Middle School to join the party in the form of our spooktacular Halloween Dance, a wonderful team building event demonstrating the amazing collaborative spirit of everyone in our school community. AISM is a wonderful place to live and learn - a community of learners who put their thinking into action and excel in academics, sport, and the creative and performing arts. As Benjamin Franklin famously stated, ‘Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.’ 2023 has been a year of lots of thinking, lots of involvement, lots of action, and lots of learning.

CAPTAINS CHELSEA UNSWORTH “Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another.” – Alfred Adler. I love this motto because I feel like I really understand it, believe in it and try to live it. One of my main values is to be empathetic and empathy is shown by thinking about others. I have been in AISM since ELC, except for a short time away in between. My earliest positive memory of AISM is learning sign language from Mr Jeremy when he was my Year 1 teacher.

I love AISM because every day I come to school and I have so many friends to welcome and play with me. My favourite moments at AISM include participating in school events, such as sports tournaments and cultural celebrations. Being a captain allowed me to develop my leadership skills further and contribute to the school community. It was fulfilling to work with other students, organise events, and be a role model for others. AISM has taught me many things but one of the most valuable things I’ve learned is the importance of clear and concise communication, which is essential in building relationships, resolving conflicts, and achieving success in various aspects of life. I believe that this skill will be beneficial in Middle School. 17

Just try again and again, and you’ll succeed. I’ve been in this school for 6 years now and it was amazing. PARENT COMMUNITY As we rapidly approach the end of 2023 it is a good time to reflect back to the start of the year and celebrate the community that ‘made all the great things happen’. The PTC committee worked tirelessly with parents, teachers, and students, sometimes all at the same time, making sure that sporting events, festivals, International Day, and student events were the best they could be. Let us give a big hand to the awesome community that has supported everyone in 2023, and look forward to an equally awesome 2024.

LANGUAGE JS LOTE BAHASA MALAYSIA The Year 2023 was an amazing year for The JS LOTE Bahasa Malaysia team. We welcomed Miss Auni, who temporarily replaced Cikgu Adila while she was on leave, we were confident that she would be able to bring in fresh insights and continue to uphold this rich tradition of fostering a love for the Malay language. Selamat datang!

We continued our interesting routine for the entry and exit tickets to start the lesson by introducing the positive chants of “Siapa bagus?” (Who is best?). The learners will respond, “Saya Bagus! Bagus! Bagus!” (I am the best!). It positively impacted the learners to get their focus and interest in learning a new language especially when we had several new students join our Bahasa Malaysia classes. Our Year 5 Bahasa Malaysia learners had their first experience playing the Sahibba (Malay version of Scrabble) to test their Malay vocabulary knowledge. During our lessons, we creatively work with cultures of thinking routines to nurture a love for learning and foster critical thinking. The students are encouraged to think critically, express their ideas, and appreciate the beauty of the Malay language and culture through the use of engaging storytelling, interactive activities, and group discussions. The learners' level of confidence has increased and they have learned to use the Bahasa Malaysia Language to understand the Malaysian culture and lifestyle as well as understand the RECIPE values. All of our students should feel very proud of their efforts!

LANGUAGE LOTE MANDARIN It has been a wonderful and fruitful year 2023 for LOTE Mandarin, filled with laughter and happiness from our learners. Besides learning topics in-line with our curriculum, we also introduced Chinese culture to our learners. We celebrated Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and looking forward to the upcoming Winter Solstice in December as a wrap up for the year 2023. Thinking routines alongside respective activities were well-planned and conducted to promote thinking skills among our learners, in hope that they apply the skills learned in daily life and strive for self-betterment.

ENGLISH The English faculty has had an exceptional year. We welcomed new team members, Ms. Dawes and Ms. Boam, whose presence injected fresh energy into our group, fostering stronger teamwork to enrich our students' learning and teaching experience. The Literacy Circle program thrived, with students delving into texts that delved into the lives of Third Culture Kids, neurodivergent characters, environmentalism and dystopian/fantasy realms. The reading material spanned various authors from Malaysia, Australia, Japan, Korea, China, and beyond. Our commitment to diverse literature mirrors our origins, ensuring a comprehensive literary world experience for all.

INTENSIVE ENGLISH SUPPORT CLASS The Intensive English Support Class (IESC) program at AISM has continued its journey of growth in 2023, with the programme expanding in both student numbers and innovative teaching strategies, aimed at catering to a diverse range of EAL (English as an Additional Language) needs.

Our chosen theme of Making Connections was explored thoroughly and unpacked via a range of lessons, activities and tasks, which allowed students to immerse themselves in the English language and improve upon their productive and receptive skills. Students were also encouraged to put their creative hats on and experiment with different texts and language forms, whilst making connections to their own lives and cultural backgrounds.

MATHEMATICS Our students continue to astound us with their achievements in many international Mathematics competitions. Notably, Year 10 standouts Derek Han and Lucus Yip have consistently demonstrated excellence and a contagious passion for mathematics with Doyoon Oh in Year 6 one of our next superstars!

Our new staff, Ms Malini and Mrs Bunn along with Ms Rashina and our Extension Mathematics students created a thrilling Maths Escape Room during STEM week for our Junior school students. The new innovative numeracy program “Number Ninjas” led by Ms Wood and Ms Azra has enhanced our students’ number sense, while Mr Pollock organised a fun competition on Pi Day, discovering that Lucus Yip and Michael Zeng can each recite Pi to over 150 decimal places! Leading this dynamic team of passionate educators is a source of immense pride, and we look forward to another year of inspiring the love of Mathematics in our students at AISM.

SCIENCE AISM students continue to enjoy curious inquiry learning about the fundamentals of science Our S.T.E.M. week exhibitions across the whole school illustrated our thirst for thinking critically about our world and how it works. Our AISM science team pays special attention to scientific literacies and inquiries to encourage students skills as scientists and skeptic investigators. This year in the Big Science Competition, Yen Kei Ooi received a Distinction, and the High Distinction result achieved by Aiman Akmal Hakim and Lucus Zhen-Yu Yip placed them in the top 5% globally.

Special thanks to our teaching and laboratory staff supporting and guiding our students towards authentic research and experimentation that lead to effective scientific communication, the cornerstone of enriching our society to better understand the complex systems and interrelationships that balance our world.

INFORMATION SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY & SOFTWARE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT Information Science and Technology (IST) and Software Design and Development represent dynamic fields that merge creativity, technical knowledge, core values, and effective communication skills, forming the bedrock for crafting computer applications and resolving complex problems. These disciplines place a strong emphasis on the significance of both individual and collective learning, while simultaneously acknowledging the immense value in sharing and assimilating one another's expertise. This collaborative approach to learning is often found to be notably more efficient and rewarding than solitary efforts, particularly in cases necessitating cohesive teamwork. A realm where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts enables us to tackle technological challenges and create impactful solutions in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY The gears and cogs of the Design & Technology, Textiles and Food Technology Workshops have run tirelessly all year. Y7s delved into the challenging worlds of textiles and food where stitches were made and unpicked in equal measure, however their perseverance led them to develop a strong appreciation for the textile industry’s unsung heroes. Food technicians expanded their culinary skills by experimenting and planning meals and snacks confidently and independently. Y8s transferred their scientific knowledge of simple machines to create innovative educational toys honing their CAD/CAM and woodwork skills and the Y9s and Y10s identified and responded to needs in the school community. They utilised available technology to create innovative solutions that were varied and nuanced, ranging from textiles to architecture. Y11 have been busy upskilling themselves and preparing for their Y12 minor design projects next year and we can’t wait to see their innovative ideas! This year, we welcomed our wonderful technician, Mr Azizul whose boundless energy, talents and caring nature are true assets for our team.

HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES The Humanities Department at AISM celebrates rich learning and critical thinking. Engaging in humanities fosters empathy, cultural understanding, and holistic development. This year saw many highlights, including our triumphant return to the World Scholar's Cup and impactful learning experiences like the Year 10 coastal management trip to Pantai Morib and the Year 11 & 12 Economics and Business Studies trip to the Sea Master factory. Additionally, our students excelled in crafting compelling Year 6 Political Speeches, showcasing Year 8 Medieval Artifacts, and curating a phenomenal Year 10 ‘Echoes of the Vietnam War’ exhibition. Humanities at AISM nurtures global citizens and lifelong learners.

THE ARTS - MUSIC

The Junior School Music Department has had another busy year with some highlights including involvement in the Australian High Commission Australia Day event, The KL Big Sing, The Egyptian Whodunnit production, International Day and the assemblies and celebrations that have concluded another great year of learning. The learners in the upper Junior School have worked very hard in their instrumental immersion programmes on recorder, violin, brass and woodwind and the younger learners have developed their performing skills admirably. We look forward to more great musical moments next year.

THE ARTS - MUSIC WOW! What a year for the MSS Music Department. The students continue to amaze us with their talent and dedication to music. These attributes have shone through during performances including AISM’s Got Talent, fortnightly Breezeway Concerts, the Music Academy Concert, The Addams Family Musical, Assembly performances, HSC Showcase performances, performances at the MABC Gala Awards, International Day, fundraisers, and AISM ROCKS. Within the classroom, students have developed skills on a variety of instruments and have furthered their theoretical learning. They have also developed skills through workshops in African Drumming and joined with other international schools to develop their Jazz skills.

THE ARTS - DRAMA What an extraordinary year it has been for the MSS Drama Department! The students have consistently dazzled with their exceptional talent and unwavering commitment to the world of drama. MALAYSIAN CULTURAL STUDIES In our Malaysian Cultural Studies lesson, we journeyed through the vibrant colours of Malaysian traditions, understanding the essence that makes the nation unique. Our exploration began with understanding the different people who call Malaysia as home. From the Malays, Chinese, and Indians, to the indigenous groups, each has its rich history and traditions that contribute to our shared identity. One captivating segment was our dive into the intricate art of Malay carving shapes. These designs, with their delicate swirls and patterns, tell stories of nature, life, and ancient beliefs. We saw how these shapes decorate our homes. Our lessons on the Malaysian election process helped us appreciate the democratic values our country upholds, ensuring every citizen's voice is heard. Through the power of the vote, we decide our future. Lastly, we celebrated Malaysia's main festivals. From the colourful Diwali, joyful Hari Raya, and vibrant Chinese New Year to the serene Gawai Dayak and solemn Thaipusam, these festivities reflect our religious and cultural diversity, making Malaysia truly Asia.

LANGUAGE STUDIES 2023 has been another dynamic year for the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) subjects, which are valued highlyat AISM as they not only foster linguistic diversity but also promote cultural understanding, enhance cognitive skills, and prepare students to navigate an increasingly interconnected and globalised world. This year, our French learners, under the guidance of Madame Rajani, explored the Francophone world through an array of engaging activities, from donning chef hats for a role play at the Cabarita Cafe to showing off their artistic skills in the creation of bright, colourful carnival masks to mark Mardi Gras. Our French learners also made the school proud with their achievements in a number of competitions with two of our students in particular, putting their linguistic prowess on display and claiming the top prize in their respective categories, in a poetry competition organised by the ’Alliance Française of Kuala Lumpur and by the French Embassy.

The Chinese classroom was equally a hive of activity this year, as our Mandarin enthusiasts, guided by Hor Laoshi, embarked on a range of language and cultural learning pursuits. Students developed their productive and receptive skills in quiz-style games, which brought out both the humourous and competitive sides of students, as well as through tasks such as letter-writing activities which saw students put pen to paper on the topic of relationships. Students also visited our living campus to discover more about the environment and practice discussing environmental issues in Chinese. The annual Moon Cake celebrations were a big hit with students experimenting with an array of flavourful fillings and creating beautifully crafted and equally delicious mooncakes.

PDPHE This year we started with news of Mrs Johns leaving us and so for just over a term we were lucky to have Coach Hussein teaching MSS classes until mid year. Then we welcomed Ms Murphy to the department and she quickly became a big part of our team. With the opening up of interschool sports we have been able to travel to other schools and host a variety of games. Interschool carnivals were also back and the school had success at the AIMS athletics and swimming carnivals. AISA games are also back and this year’s trip to Vietnam was an incredible experience with personal and team success.

Our AISM sustainability initiatives and education has had a major upgrade in 2023, capitalising on the skills and enthusiasm of our staff and students. With a fresh new title, the student team “Living Campus” has been proudly running multiple initiatives, activities and fundraisers that have successfully made our school more aware and conscientious of environmental sustainability. The 2023 Living Campus student representatives have worked hard to make organic food material recycling more accessible to students, embedding a modularised course for students to experience how this important feature of AISM recycling is conducted. This modular unit explores recycling, composting, production of organic soils, the planting, growing and harvesting of plants and the eventual marketing of plant products. Students use a variety of plants, materials and tools in the agricultural production process. After surveying our whole student community we are pleased to present outstanding results, with a majority of students acknowledging the need to refuse single use plastics and paper, motivated by inherent dispositions to do the right thing, now and into the future. This is such an encouraging sign; more thoughtful waste management will filter across society as we make our mark with what we choose and what we refuse.

SERVICE LEARNING Service learning is a transformative educational approach that combines traditional classroom learning with meaningful community service. At our school, we've taken this concept to heart by seamlessly integrating the CHIN Program into our mainstream curriculum. This initiative has not only enriched our students' educational experiences but has also fostered a deeper sense of social responsibility and empathy. Through a diverse range of teaching and learning activities, we've strived to instill in our students the importance of giving back to the community, emphasizing that knowledge is a powerful tool for positive change.

One standout event was our collaboration with the CHIN community during International Day. This cultural exchange was a powerful learning experience for both our students and the CHIN community members. They graciously shared their rich cultural heritage and traditional dance forms, providing our students with a unique opportunity to appreciate and understand the value of diversity. Additionally, we organized fundraising efforts for both the CHIN organization and the Good Shepherd organization, underlining our commitment to supporting local initiatives and making a positive impact on the broader community. As an extension of our gratitude, we also took the time to acknowledge and appreciate the essential contributions of our school's unsung heroes - the cleaners, gardeners, and security guards - by preparing heartfelt gift baskets for them. This act of kindness not only reinforced our school's sense of community but also served as a powerful reminder of the impact of small gestures of appreciation.

AIMS SPORTS 2022-2023 SEASON As usual, AISM has a different calendar year to all of the other AIMS schools. Organising the school’s Athletics Carnivals and the AIMS Athletics Carnival all in the first weeks of the new school year has always been a challenge. Therefore, a decision has been made where MSS Athletics Carnival will take place in Term 4 each academic year. This changeover has provided students the opportunity to train and prepare for the AIMS Athletics Carnival in Term 1 2023. An external athletics coach has been appointed to run the training session which led to a better result for our school at the competition. Various sports have been played throughout the years (Friendly / AIMS fixtures). We would like to congratulate the students who represented AISM in all sports and events and to all of our students who won ISAC medals. AISM performs exceptionally well in these competitions, consistently placing in the top 6, outshining schools of similar sizes and being highly competitive against much larger schools. Winning an ISAC medal places these students amongst the very best of many international schools in Kuala Lumpur. This is a major sporting achievement and it would not happen without the dedicated coaching teams at AISM.

The focus is on active listening and being present for each other. INTERNATIONAL DAY & WEEK

International Week and International Day celebrations are much loved and anticipated highlights of the annual AISM calendar. The 2023 festivities saw our campus transformed into a hub of cultural celebrations that showcased our rich diversity with traditional costumes galore, a poignant flag parade featuring the 41 nationalities that make up our community, a range of electrifying performances including the Scottish Reel and the Haka, as well as a profound keynote address on inclusivity by the Acting Australian High Commissioner, Mr. Simon Fellows. Members of the AISM community had an amazing day being immersed in cultures from all corners of the globe via art, music, sports and the most popular destination of the day, which of course was the delectable and irresistible Food Fair.

Leading up to International Day was International Week, which was marked in the MSS via a range of activities including daily trivia global knowledge challenges, traditional artforms as well as a lively South African immersive experience that saw both music and culinary delights from the country on offer, provided the perfect prelude and build-up to the main celebrations.

Model United Nations (MUN) is a beacon of experiential learning, nurturing young minds to grapple with complex global issues. AISM's MUN program simulates the real-world UN sessions, allowing students to delve into the complexities of international relations, diplomacy, and negotiation. MUN fosters critical thinking, research skills, and the art of persuasive public speaking. Students are introduced to global politics, learning to advocate, negotiate, and build consensus in a diverse and multicultural setting. The images shown here are from the 2022 MUNAISM conference, an event that involved students in Year 8 and Year 9, held in the final week of the School Year. Through MUN, AISM continues to nurture future leaders, diplomats, and advocates, equipping them with the tools and perspectives necessary to build a more peaceful and cooperative world.

INTERNATIONAL AWARD

The International Award is a unique experience that integrates Service, Skills, Sports and Camping. This world renown program builds future leaders as it tests commitment and endurance. Yin Kai has already finished his Silver award and there are others who will finish soon.

This year, our Silver group had to adjust their plans as we ended up doing a photographic study of the street art, architecture and natural wonders of Malaysian Cities. Melaka was an extra challenge as we had to battle this year's heat wave. The students, however, made the most of the opportunity and learnt to work as a united team. Ipoh gave us a cultural experience as we not only covered the Ipoh Heritage Walk but also the Cave Temples, Mirror Lake and Kellie's Castle.

JUNIOR SCHOOL MUSICAL EGYPTIAN MYSTERY

This year’s Junior School production was a murder mystery, set in Ancient Egypt. The audience was taken back in time to witness the dramatic life, and early death of Tutankhamun and were led to believe that one of Tutankhamun’s advisors was behind his death. Thanks to the trusty and comical sleuth work of Nasi and Lemak, the truth was revealed! Adhering closely to the history books, this production invoked lots of learning about Ancient Egypt. Led by our wonderful Year 5 cast, our students once again proved their theatrical prowess through song, dance and acting in the Auditorium.

YEAR 2 & 3 EPIC SLEEPOVER CAMP

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER This year's sleepover camp in the school's auditorium was a big hit among our Year 2 and Year 3 students. The day began with the fun task of setting up tents, followed by a delightful nature walk. Students collected leaves, twigs and flowers, which they later used to craft unique nature collages. As the sun began to set, the scent of BBQ wafted through the air. Delicious burgers and sausages were on the menu, but the real treat was the karaoke session. Our superstars sang their hearts out! The evening's highlight was the campfire. Under the starry sky, students toasted marshmallows and cooked the damper bread they had earlier prepared. The day wrapped up with a cosy movie session in the auditorium, where students relaxed on beanbags and indulged in popcorn.

The following morning brought more adventures. After a refreshing swim in the pool, students had a hearty breakfast before participating in team sports, showcasing teamwork and sportsmanship. Later on, they sat down to make colourful friendship bracelets, intertwining threads and memories. Although the camp was nearing its end, there was still one more challenge: packing up. It turned out that packing tents and rolling up sleeping bags was trickier than setting them up, but with everyone's effort and teamwork, the task became another fun activity. This sleepover was filled with joy, learning and bonding, precious memories that will stay with us forever.

YEAR 3, 4 & 5 CAMP

UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS AT GOPENG EARTH CAMP Our spirited students from Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 packed their bags this year for a memorable expedition to Gopeng Earth Camp, located within the serene surroundings of Natasya Riverside Resort in Gopeng, Perak. For the older Year 4 and 5 students, the journey spanned a fulfilling four days and three nights, while the Year 3 students, marking a milestone with their first-ever school camp, embraced the adventure over three days and two nights. Beyond the thrill of outdoor adventures, the camp served as a platform to strengthen friendships, fine-tune interpersonal interactions, instil confidence and foster problem-solving skills.

The camp provided an array of activities that focused on teamwork, collaboration and healthy competition. Students splashed and swam in the gentle river waters, confronted their fears with rock climbing, manoeuvred through water currents during rafting and tapped into their inner explorers with caving adventures. Various team-based activities ensured they learned the values of working together, understanding one another's strengths and cheering each other on. The culmination of this memorable camp was the final night's disco, where fun shared experiences and friendships were celebrated. With tasty meals to refuel and cosy cabins to rest in, the Gopeng Earth Camp experience was one that our students will look back on fondly for many years.

YEAR 6 CAMP

After a very busy two terms of transition into Middle Senior School, the anticipation and excitement was high for our Year 6 cohort as Camp Week finally arrived and we departed AISM for the 5-hour bus journey to Desaru. Upon our arrival at Bayu Balau Beach Resort, we were warmly welcomed by the Nomad Adventure crew of Ms Dee, Radin, and Meor, our fantastic camp coordinators for our four-day/three night programme in Desaru. The lovely beach at Tanjung Bulau, a short ten-minute walk from our accommodation, was host to a variety of the students’ favourite camp activities: Beach Olympics, stand-up paddle boarding/surfing, basic water rescue and lifesaving, a night beachwalk, beach clean up, and a sand sculpture competition. In addition to the beach activities, the intrepid Year 6 cohort also enjoyed a visit to the nearby Muzium Nelayan (Fishermen’s Museum) and a short hike up to a spectacular viewpoint where the students made campfires and roasted marshmallows. We also enjoyed a variety of activities around the resort, including the popular disco night on the final night of camp. Overall, it was an incredible camp! The chaperone team of Ms Rashina, Ms Lahlitaa, Ms Hafizah, and Mr Marshall were most impressed with the level of participation, teamwork, resilience, and camaraderie of the entire Year 6 cohort.

YEAR 7 CAMP

When Year 7 2023 boarded the bus at 8.30 am for camp with Ms Dawes, Ms Azratee, Mr Azizul and Ms Wood we had no idea of the adventure we would have over the next four days! After arriving, we created a raft with some well-placed PVC pipes and tractor inner tubes and some handy rope. This intense team building exercise had us collaborating, problem solving and working with peers in a way that is difficult to replicate in a classroom. Finally, it was time to go to sea on the raft and they paddled away down the beach. On day two we split into two groups with half our group going on a jungle discovery hike and the other half having the opportunity to explore the sea in a double kayak. These activities were an opportunity to work with new people, to explore nature, learn a new skill and connect with our teachers and peers. In the afternoon we swapped over. Day three and we were travelling to Pangkor. We were escorted around the island to different beaches and shown the sights from the sea. Some highlights were going to Coral beach and having a yummy beach pizza lunch. We then spent time swimming in the shallow warm water. There was some tennis ball throwing fun and time to chat and explore. That night we had a campfire on the beach, singing songs, eating marshmallows and making memories. On day 4 it was an early wake up and we were ready for our final stop ‘The Lost World of Tambun’ after a McDonalds lunch we were allowed to explore the park, go on rides and have a ball. Finally it was time for our drive back to school into the waiting arms of our families.

We are grateful for Mr Goh and his team's leadership and their fun and thought provoking sessions and their excellent organisation skills. We wish to thank our teachers for supporting us over the camp. Finally, thank you to our families for supporting us and sending us to a camp that will live on for a longtime in our memories because it's hard to forget having that much fun!

YEAR 8 CAMP

The Year 8 Camp to Langkawi was an unforgettable experience for the students, filled with cross-cultural activities and exciting adventures. During their stay, the students actively participated in various activities that enhanced their understanding of the local culture. One of the highlights was the Batik painting workshop, where students embraced their creative sides, learning the intricate art of traditional Malaysian fabric design. Additionally, the students visited an agricultural education centre, where they gained hands-on knowledge about the cultivation of rice. They were fascinated to learn about the meticulous process of planting and harvesting rice, gaining a newfound appreciation for the agricultural heritage of Langkawi.

Apart from the cultural experiences, the students also indulged in thrilling outdoor activities. They had the opportunity to swim in the pristine waters of the Straits of Malacca, creating lasting memories as they enjoyed the tropical paradise. Another adventurous activity was a challenging 25-kilometre mountain bike ride through the scenic rice fields of Langkawi. Pedalling through the lush green landscapes, the students not only tested their physical endurance but also explored the natural beauty of the island. Through these activities, the students not only had a fantastic time but also deepened their understanding of the island of Langkawi, forging strong bonds as a class. The camp provided a unique opportunity for learning, adventure, and camaraderie, making it a truly enriching experience for everyone involved.

YEAR 9 CAMP Year 9 Camp was held in Saigon and Ben Tre, Vietnam. We had a wonderful trip with many amazing experiences. In our break times we played board games and consumed the awesome local food. In Saigon we walked through town and visited the War Remnants Museum and the Cu Chi Tunnels. These brought the Vietnamese war to life as we saw the conditions and the aftermath of the devastating conflict. Our long cycle ride had us travel around 20 km through backroads and in very hot weather to Ben Tre. Apart from cycling we experienced planting rice in a paddy, working in a farm, a boat ride on the Mekong Delta and interacting with a local disadvantaged school.

YEAR 10 CAMP This year’s Year 10 camp was to Perth, Western Australia. An excited group of Year 10s travelled overnight to Perth, arriving on a wet and cool morning. The weather did not dampen our spirits however, as we went straight to King’s Park, which provides awesome views, elevated above the CBD skyline. After a hot breakfast in a lovely cafe in the park, the students couldn’t wait to get out and run around in the park. After taking in the history of the park’s War Memorials, we moved onwards to the Ern Halliday Recreation Camp, where we stayed for the week.

During our time at Ern Halliday, we were extremely well fed and we were able to do so many amazing activities, including archery, a coastal bike ride, caving, climbing Jacob’s Ladder, team-building games and many more. Across the week, we also embarked on excellent excursions to see Australian wildlife at Caversham Wildlife Park and over to the historic Rottnest Island, as well as an outing to shop in Perth. The trip provided us with many amazing opportunities to learn, be challenged, grow, bond together and explore life in Australia.

In early October, our Year 11 cohort set out on an educational expedition to Sydney, Australia's bustling metropolis. The first day, 6 October, saw them enjoying the serene ambiance of South Cronulla beach, providing an ideal start to their voyage and settling into the AGH camp, as they geared up for the array of experiences awaiting them. The subsequent days at the camp were filled with a mix of adrenaline-pumping activities. Standouts like the Dangling Duo and Sky Cycle tested students’ physical and mental mettle. On Sunday, 8 October, the group transitioned to the Sydney Academy of Sports and Recreation Centre, presenting opportunities for deeper camaraderie and introspection. Monday shifted gears academically with insightful tours to esteemed institutions: the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales, and UTS. These visits offered our students a glimpse into potential academic pathways, highlighting the vibrant student life and rigorous academic offerings these universities boast.

Concluding their Sydney escapade, students immersed themselves in the city's rich cultural tapestry. Meandering through the energetic pathways of Pitt St Mall, they savoured Sydney's unique blend of modernity and history, especially evident at landmarks like Sydney Harbour and Circular Quay. A ferry excursion afforded them breathtaking city vistas, rounding off their Sydney sojourn. In reflection, this trip transcended a mere visit, evolving into a transformative journey of exploration, bonding, and maturation for our Year 11 students.

As we come to the end of another magical year in ELC, it's a time for us to reflect on the incredible journey we have taken together. These young learners have shown incredible curiosity and excitement for knowledge exploring their unique personalities, fairy tales, and far-off lands. From Melodies to Maturity Year 4 kicked off on a high note with our assembly in Term 1. Our class poem touched many, and the sound of ukuleles strumming became the rhythm of our term. It wasn't just about showcasing talent; it was about uniting as a class and setting a positive tone for the year ahead. In Term 2, it was time for adventure! We headed out to school camp where we dove into white water rafting, explored the mysteries of caving, and took daring swims in fast-moving waters. Some students also championed passion projects during the MSS RuOK day, demonstrating their leadership and commitment to the community. Year 11 students have approached their first year of Senior studies with determination and hard work. They've been honing their time management skills and embodying the traits of Visible Learners. They've proactively identified their learning needs, welcomed feedback, and taken on every task with a growth mindset. Some notable moments from this year include their support for the Year 12s during the Team Building Day, active involvement in leadership processes, and the recent enriching week-long Sydney Camp, which fostered strong bonds. This term, our Year 11s have commenced their HSC courses, embarking on an intense academic journey leading up to the HSC Examinations in 2024. It's been truly rewarding to witness the Year 11 cohort evolve into mature and thoughtful young adults. I have every confidence that they will carry their positivity and kindness with them as they step into their final school year.

YEAR 12 MAJOR PROJECT In 2023, Shotaro, Denyce, Jesse, and Saskia’s journey in Design and Technology speaks volumes about their unwavering passion. Witnessing their relentless dedication, spending countless hours in the workshop, and pursuing their goals with remarkable fortitude has been truly inspiring. Their innovative, experimental approach of prioritising the journey over the final outcome distinguishes them as future changemakers. Shotaro’s socially sustainable approach, Denyce’s zero-waste focus, Jesse’s tireless skill honing, and Saskia’s seamless blend of artistry and technology embody their fervour. Our shared path as teacher and students is marked by a cherished connection. I wish them every success in their future endeavours.

YEAR 12 GRADUATION The culmination of the academic journey for the class of 2023 was marked by the Year 12 Graduation. The students marked this momentous occasion with two significant celebration: the formal school ceremony and the grand evening festivity at the KL Tower, Kuala Lumpur. Given the strenuous HSC exams, the festivities might have seemed distant at times, but the students indeed reached the finish line with flying colors!

Key moments from these events encompassed the delightful Morning Tea orchestrated by the Year 11 students in the Black Box, musical renditions by both Year 11 students, an insightful address by our respected Principal, Mr. Brooks, the wonderful Tunnel of Love, heartfelt words from our School Captains, and a night filled with dance, photographs, and elegance at the KL Tower. This Graduation was a time of reflection, joy, gratitude, and no shortage of emotional moments. Celebrating these incredible young individuals has etched a lasting memory for students, families, and teachers. We wholeheartedly wish them success as they step forward into the next chapter of their lives.

TOTALLY COMMITTED Throughout my remarkable journey at AISM, I find myself deeply appreciative of the supportive atmosphere, committed teachers, and wide range of opportunities that have shaped my educational experience. From the initial days of exploration to the final moments of my senior year, AISM has served as a second home where I not only acquired knowledge, but also cultivated lasting friendships and discovered my true passions. The exceptional community, focus on individual growth, and multitude of enriching experiences have truly distinguished this school. As I prepare to embark on new adventures, I carry not just a qualification, but also a profound sense of gratitude for the memories, lessons, and friendships that have defined my time at AISM. My journey at AISM started on the 8th of January, 2009, and ended on 15th of September, 2023. It has been well over 15 years during my study here and I will never forget the nurses, teachers, and friends that have helped me throughout my academic journey. By following the RECIPE values everyone in AISM becomes a community where interactions between students and teachers is approachable, and it is a place where everyone is treated equally. My favourite part of AISM is the practice of the annual traditions of team building day, international day and walkathon where the whole school gets involved and has fun. Personally, I strive in sports and have been a coach for a junior netball team; and captain of the netball, basketball and volleyball team. I must say that it is a valuable experience to be in a team of many talented individuals. Conclusively, as one of the longest reigned students of AISM, a chapter of my life has closed and I will be looking forward to the next chapter, 'University'.

STAFF FAREWELL I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to you all for being such a joy to work with over the past two years. AISM is a very special place. As everybody always remarks - even people visiting the school for the very first time - it feels like family here. Our students at AISM are quite remarkable.100% of class time is learning time. They leave us equipped to thrive and excel in the world outside of school!
