With October behind us, I would like to thank all those that attended the AGM held in Warwick and welcome both the newly appointed and re-standing directors.

Last month saw a few new events run, in that of Injune, Forbes and great to see Bourke return after 23 years. It is good to see so many new affiliates this year, which has also seen an increase in our membership.

Animal Welfare always needs to be at the forefront of our minds. All the current state legislation can be found under the Livestock Tab on our website, or you can contact the girls in the office if you need any further clarification. Jane Ryan, Tom Willoughby and Brett Ryan have been preparing an Animal Welfare presentation which is a requirement by the Victorian Government for us to be able to Affiliate Rodeos down there. I would like to thank you all for your time and effort that has gone into this presentation.

With the NFR only a week away and Christmas nearly upon us, this is one of the busiest times of the year for everyone. Jill has played a detrimental role in the lead up to the finals together with the help from Melinda and the finals committee (Brett Cross, Ben Hall, Brad Pierce and myself). They have been working tirelessly for the last 11 months planning for this event. We have also employed Leah from Your Equine Agency who has been doing all our promotional and social media work leading up to the NFR. I would like to wish everyone the best of luck who is competing and look forward to seeing you all there.

November already!

We’ve just had a big couple of weeks in the office with Warwick. It was great to see members dropping into the office while they were in town, it’s nice to put faces to voices on the phone.

We have also been busy taking membership payments – welcome to our new members and a big thank you for our continuing members.

Affiliates are an integral part of APRA and we are here to assist you with all your rodeo needs, in particular Insurance. In partnership with Affinity Insurance, APRA can offer several options for Insurance for our affiliates. ·Rodeo Insurance for your rodeo events, · Insurance for practice days/jackpots/clinics (per event or yearly fee) ·Property Leasee’s Insurance (24/7 Insurance for your rodeo grounds).

If you would like to discuss your insurance requirements, please give Head Office a call and we will be happy to talk you through options and facilitate a quotation for you.

The new system has been in service now for 3 months and it is working well. In the next few months we will be testing a competitor portal for competitors to manage their entries and payments.

One of the main advantages of the system is its ability to generate reports for animal welfare, bucking stock of the year, rodeo information which are crucial to us for management purposes, NFR, legislative requirements.

With all computer programs, the success of these reports depends on the information that is entered into them. This means we need all committees to return their paperwork completed – injuries, turnouts, levy sheets, completed judges and results sheets. We appreciate paperwork being scanned and emailed back to the office by Monday Morning following the rodeo. This allows us to get payouts, results, and standings up to date as soon as we can. It is also important to post your paperwork back to Head Office for our records.

JUDGING CLINICS

WHY ATTEND A CLINIC? Clinics are free and all members are welcome and encouraged to attend a clinic! Improve your knowledge, gain a better understanding of the rules and get an insight into what is expected of our rodeo judges. You are not required to go on and become an approved judge.

HOW TO BECOME A JUDGE?

A clinic involves a comprehensive course covering the rule book, judging practices and the expectations of a judge. It aims to be informative, easily understood and to provide an insight into the role of a rodeo judge.

SIT THE TEST

A judging test involves questions and scenarios based around the APRA rulebook. Questions relate to each of the individual events, animal welfare and general judging obligations.

BOARD APPROVAL

Once you have attended a clinic, sat and passed a judging test you need to complete a judging application form and it will be submitted to the Competition Board for approval.

Judging clinics are being planned for each circuit and formal WHEN details will be advertised once they are finalised. If you are interested in a clinic being held in your area or would like to AND register to attend a clinic, please contact the APRA Office.

2023 CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2023 APRA ROOKIE CHAMPIONS! The 2023 rookie race saw multiple competitors smash season earnings records, win Pro Tour titles and just straight out dominate throughout the season! We asked each of them to put their 2023 season and rookie wins in their own words.

“My highlight for the year alongside breaking the season earnings records, would be the Allround Cowboy title at Mount Isa. I love bull riding, but I love proving to myself and everyone, that I’m more so a ‘cowboy.’ Having won so much money feels amazing, mainly because all of the blood, sweat and tears have paid off.

I’m so appreciative of the people who have helped me. I had 2 families in Vic who helped me alot in the beginning of the year (Perkins family and Pete Davenport and Shianne). Thanks to Mum and Dad for supporting me. Them letting me have as much time off to pursue what I set out to achieve this year was very important.

I was very fortunate to have big wins this year, but I believe anyone who wins big has been blessed by God and has put the hard work in.”

Doctor and I set out to win the Rookie Barrel Racing title and we achieved this. Winning Richmond rodeo for me was a highlight, as it was my first ever QLD win. Following it up by winning Cloncurry the next weekend was incredible!

I’d like to thank every single person who has given me encouragement and words of support, it really is appreciated beyond words. It was really tough being away from my family for so many months, but I was super grateful to have my Mum by my side.

ROOKIE SADDLE BRONC “The highlight of my season and my biggest win was definitely winning the Tibooburra Xtreme Broncs on Moves Like Jagger. I’d been waiting for years to draw him again. He was the first open horse I ever got on and he bucked me off. It was nice to get revenge. It just topped off my season and was a great way to finish.

I’d like to thank my Mum and Dad for everything. Dad has taught me everything I know, whenever I was struggling with anything I would just go to Dad and get help and he’d correct it.

And I’d like to thank my wife Elise. She has been the most supportive person throughout the whole year, she helped me more than anybody through the ups and downs.”

“My main goal for the season was to win my rookie year and make the NFR. I remember working out who else was going to be chasing down the title and thinking, ‘it’s going to be a battle.’ It all started to come together at Kyabram when I won my first rodeo.

To some people, it’s just a rookie title, but for someone who’s not from rodeo, and who started very late, it’s a whole lot more. It’s an amazing feeling when you achieve something that you’ve worked so hard for!

ROOKIE BAREBACK “Winning the APRA rookie title was a huge achievement for me this year. It’s been a massive year, including living on the road for 4 months, so to be able to walk away with these titles is amazing.

It’s my first year on the APRA cicrcuit and to be able to get on great bucking stock each and every weekemd helped me ahieve this win.

I’d also like to say a massive thankyou to my wife for all of the support in bringing the kids every weekemd to cheer me on. I didn’t enter a single rodeo this season, it was all he. I wouldn’t have won this title or stayed mentally strong enough to do so without her support. Im very privwleged to be able to ride with the APRA>

Do what works for you. Remember what you did that got you there, and keep that approach. Treat every round as a new rodeo, because that’s how you got to where you are, one rodeo at a time. If you’re nervous, don’t overthink it. Refocus on things you have control over and stick to your routine. Make sure you have fun and that you 100% back yourself.

AUSTRALIAN TITLE It’s NFR November and in the coming days the top 15 in every event will battle it out for a coveted gold buckle and the right to forever call themselves an Australian Champion! While there is some spread in some events, other events are going to be a red-hot contest until the very last round. And nothing is ever assured in rodeo!

The Bareback Riding will see the pro tour battle continue into the Australian title race between rookie Brendon Crawley and young gun Jarrod McKane. However, it’d be wise not to bet too hard against veteran Dave Worsfold. With numerous Australian Champion buckles and fresh off a win at the big Warwick rodeo, Dave could just be the quiet upset.

Jesse Glass has led the Steer Wrestling pack for the majority of the season, but he has the current Australian Champion, Riley Gibb, knocking hard on the door to make it 3 Australian titles in a row. Known as a young man’s event, we see the rest of the pack sprinkled with veterans like Mark Price, Gavin Walker and Mark Gibb. Will we see youth and enthusiasm hold out or will age and experience overtake?

Cameron Southern has had a phenomenal season in the Saddle Bronc Riding. However, Jordan Iker has been right there with him the whole way along and a minor round placing is all that separates them. Not too much further behind is rookie standout and in-form cowboy Michael Johnston. This is one of those too-close-to-pick races!

Also too close to pick, is the Ladies Barrel Race. Leanne Caban and rookie sensation Adanni Walker have to and fro-ed all year for the top spot. It’s hard to pick which one will be there when the curtain closes but it’s also hard to see anybody else being able to catch them. Although it’s not impossible for Zara Benjamin and the big bay ‘Bear.’

Toby Hale and Cameron Southern are fighting over more than one gold buckle, but Toby has a strong edge on Cameron in the Bull Riding battle. It’s not statistically impossible, but it is hard to imagine any of the other cowboys getting their hands on the Bull Riding title. Cameron already has one to his name from 2022, can he deny Toby of the fairytale finish to a magical season?

Campbell Hodson, Shane Kenny and Mitch Eastwell are set up for a photo finish for the Rope & Tie gold buckle. All 3 cowboys are former Australian champs. They have 17 titles between them. 13 of those belong to Shane but the last of them came in 2015. Campbell has won 3 since then and is the current champ. And Mitch would be eager to prove he can win a second one. It’s anyone’s game.

If we were betting solely on form, it’d be hard to go against Ben Smith and Kai Clark to win back-to-back Team Roping titles.

They won Mount Isa. They just won Warwick rodeo. But Cameron Milner proved he can handle the heat by winning Cloncurry with Shane Iker. Can he hold onto his top spot in Gracemere? Ben Smith has a field of champions breathing down his neck on the heading side, and there’ll be no nights off for anyone in the team roping. The way the standings are stacked, there’s every possibility we could see the Team Roping titles split between teams.

Alyesha Burford chipped away and built herself a respectable lead in the Ladies Breakaway Roping throughout the season, but if there’s an event where it’s anyone’s game, it’s this one. She has an entire pack of cowgirls chasing her and they’re all capable. Young guns, Joebie McPhee and Anna Crisp, are second and third in the standings and have both proved they can rope fast on the big stages. Stacey Wilburn finds herself toward the end of the list however a dominating performance at Warwick rodeo could be just the momentum she needs. It truly is anyone’s game.

Perhaps the only title that is a safe bet is uncatchable Leanne Caban and the Allround Cowgirl title. On the other end of the scale, the Allround Cowboy race is set to be an edge of your seat thriller! After they both smashed season earnings records, only $176.54 separates Toby Hale and Cameron Southern. When the dust settles, who wins?

Tuesday 7th Nov ALL DAY: Arena and venue set up.

Arena will be open for riding whenever it is not being occupied for set up.

Wednesday 8th Nov 9am: Barrel Racing practice. (The course will be set after this.)

2pm: Timed event stock run through.

ALL DAY: Arena will be open for riding when not being occupied for set up or for above time slots.

6.30pm: Awards Ceremony and Back Number presentations at Gracemere Hotel

Thursday 9th Nov 10am-12pm: Arena open for riding.

11am: Stock draws will be published.

12pm: Grand Entry practice.

3.30pm: Competitor briefing at the timed event end of the arena.

4pm: Group photos in front of the bucking chutes. Photos will be taken in the following order: Officials (including Judges, pick up men, bull fighters, timekeepers, stock contractors, arena staff), breakaway roping, rope & tie, team roping, steer wrestling, barrel race, bareback, saddle bronc, bull ride.

6.30pm: NFR Round 1 commences.

Friday 10th Nov 10am-12pm: Arena open for riding.

11am: Stock draws will be published.

6.30pm: NFR Round 2 commences.

Sat 11th Nov 6-8am: Arena access for riding.

9am: Stock draws will be published for Round 3 & 4.

11am: NFR Round 3 commences with a minute silence for Remembrance Day 5.30pm: NFR Round 4 commences.

We saw rookies dominate the Pro Tour titles in the 2023 season and we are set to expect the same this year, after the commencement of the 2024 season. At Back o’ Bourke Stampede, three of the four rookie contenders staked claim on their events and took out the win.

Maddie Caban won the Barrel Race, Ella Burns the Breakaway Roping and Adam Harvey won the Team Roping with partner Clay Caban.

Venue and Camping Details • Horse Health Declarations to be completed and presented to the secretary’s office at the event. The venue PIC Number is: QGFR2000 • Competitors camping only is available at the venue. There is limited power, however APRA are currently looking into sourcing some generators for the camping area. Water, showers, and toilets all available. Plenty of space to make portable yards for horses.

• CQLX is located only 2.2km from Gracemere Shopping world (Woolworths etc) and the Gracemere Hotel. Rockhampton is 12km away and is a large regional centre with many attractions including shopping, movies, sporting facilities (golf, bowling), restaurants and bars. Yeppoon Beach is also only a short 55km drive. Plenty to do whilst you are in the region!

• Competitor camping is available from Monday afternoon 6th November 2023 • PLEASE NOTE: There is a new stable complex within the competitors camping area, however, unfortunately they are NOT FREE, and must be booked through the CQLX office.

This is part of the contract APRA has with CQLX for the venue and unfortunately out of our control. We’d appreciate it if you could cooperate with CQLX on this as they will be monitoring the area on a regular basis.

• All dogs must be restrained and tied at camping areas at all times. No dogs are allowed outside of the competitors camping area, i.e., no dogs allowed at the arena or spectator areas.

Competitor Arm Bands and Companion Passes Competitors are entitled to one companion for the duration of the NFR. Competitors must supply the name of their companion to be included on the gate entry list. If your companions name is not on the gate entry list, then they will not be given a companion arm band and will need to proceed to purchase a ticket from the spectator’s entrance gate.

Companion names must be submitted in your Qualifier Registration Form. Please note, changes can be made to your companion’s name in the lead up to the event, however final names must be received by no later than Monday 6th November 2023.

Competitors will need to attend the competitors gate entry before commencement of round 1 to receive their competitors arm band. This must be worn for the duration of the three days of the NFR. No entrance will be allowed into the event without your competitors arm band. No replacements issued.

Competitor and Companion Seating This year there will be a designated competitors and companions grandstand which will be separate to the spectator’s area and located at the timed event end of the arena. Competitors and companions will need to show their arm bands to security to gain access to the spectator’s area.

Cancel Outs - Monday 9am until 12 noon (the week of the rodeo unless otherwise stated. A fine of $5 applies per rodeo to all cancel outs. After this penalties as per Rules 22.1 to 22.8 apply.

All times strictly Queensland Eastern Standard Time where daylight savings does not occur.

In case of a dispute on your entry, all entry calls will be recorded. You will be given a call back number which you should keep as your confirmation of your entry. This number will be needed if you claim a mistake has been made with your entry.

Keep your calls to an absolute minimum - where call is answered strictly state membership number, rodeo and event.

Entries are only taken on two days except where there are entries for five or more rodeos. Check entry dates carefully! If entry dates fall on a public holiday check this page for altered dates/times.
