COMPETITION BOARD

So far the 2024 season is looking bright. We started our year right with Tumbarumba rodeo on New Years Day attracting massive entries, with a standout of 38 competitors in the open Saddle Bronc Riding. Tumbarumba rodeo welcomed six different rodeo stock contractors to the town, with Steve Condell, Gill Brothers, McPhee Rodeo Co, Tumut Rodeo Club, Tumbarumba Rodeo Club and Destiny Downs Cattle Co all supplying stock. A special mention to Tumbarumba Rodeo Club’s ‘Hill Top Hustler’ coming away with the Paul Doughty Memorial trophy halter for winning the ‘best bucking horse of the day.’ It’s great to see bronc riding in Australia thriving! I think that is largely part to do with the great rough stock schools being held and made available to young fellas wanting to learn. There have been 4 schools ran in the last couple of months, with over 90 different students attending. Congratulations to everyone involved in making these schools happen! Also, a special thanks to Xtreme Broncs Australia for their continued support of the APRA, for helping the sport of Saddle Bronc riding grow and prosper, and for shining a light on our Aussie talent. Congratulations to Rick Knudsen and his outstanding bucking horse ‘Cherokee Mountain’ for being voted by the qualifiers as the rankest horse of the APRA NFR. And lastly, I would like to welcome our newly appointed Bull Riding director, Rhys Angland, to the APRA Competition Board. Thank you to all the competitors, stock contractors and committees for supporting the APRA rodeos. Without you all we have no rodeos. Please don't hesitate to contact any of our directors with issues or new ideas. We are the voice of the competitors and will do our best to support you. Goodluck and safe travels!

As we approach our busy Easter run, I just wanted to point out a few tips for committees filling in rodeo applications. It is important to submit your application forms as soon as possible to allow time to process your application and get them advertised in the Rodeo News and the website. It is also important to have made your decisions in regard to prize money and events being run to allow for accurate advertising.

RODEO APPLICATIONS Prizemoney Prize money split equally across all events but can have up to 2 Feature Events – 1 Rough Stock and/or 1 Timed Event Rule 18.4 & 26.2

Feature Event – cannot be more than 50% of the remaining standard events

2nd Division Prize Money cannot be more than 50% of the corresponding Open Event Rule 26.2.1

Any 2nd Division or Junior Events cannot be equal or more than any open event. Rule 26.2.2

Addback The maximum add back for $1000 prize money is $100. The add back may increase $10 for every extra $1000 prize money to the limit of $200 add back. For example, $2,000 prize money, maximum add back $110; $11,000 prize money $200 add back. Rule 26.18

Levies The APRA Levy is a set fee. The Committee Levy Timed Events: Prize Money up to $2000/event – 2.5% of posted prize money to a maximum of $35. Prize money over $3000/event – maximum of $40. Roughstock Events: Prize money over $1000/event – 3.5% of posted prize money to a maximum of $45. Prize money over $3000/event – maximum of $50.

Addback + APRA Levy + Committee Levy + GST (if applicable) = Total Entry Fee

PAYOUT PROCEDURES Head Office doing payouts: • 4-6 weeks prior to Rodeo – Invoice for Affiliation Fees • 2-4 weeks prior to Rodeo – Invoice for Posted Prize Money • First Business Day after Rodeo – Invoice for APRA Member Entry Fees collected at Rodeo o Includes Addback (part of the prizemoney pool) o APRA Levies o Committee Levies o GST if applicable o Needs to be paid as soon as you receive your invoice to enable funds to be available for payouts to competitors. • Once balanced at Head Office – we pay the Committee Levy back to the Committee • Any levies for Non-Standard Events will also be invoiced following the rodeo.

Please note Public Holidays through March and April will also affect Head Office and Central Entries.

GENERAL BUSINESS The Competition Board would like to welcome the newly appointed Bull Riding Director Rhys Angland. Rhys will fill the director position that was left vacant at the recent AGM. A former Australian Champion Bull Rider, Rhys will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the board.

Bull Riding Director Judging Clinics Judging clinics, upskilling our current judges and enlisting new judges, continues to be at the forefront of the Competition and Executive Boards’ agendas. We encourage anyone with judging interests to read the Judging Course that is linked on the APRA website and enquire about sitting a judging test to become fully accredited. Upon completion of the 2023 APRA NFR, qualifiers in the Saddle Bronc and Bareback Riding voted on and supplied trophy halters for ‘Rankest Horse of the NFR’ in both events. Rick Knudsen’s ‘Cherokee Mountain’ was awarded the halter from the saddle bronc riders, while ‘Blue Moon Rising’ of Gill Bros was the cowboys’ pick for the bareback riders. DAVE WORSFOLD Dave Worsfold has tipped his hat and hung up his bareback riding riggin. The 4 times Australian Champion and world class cowboy has been nodding his head on bareback bucking horses for 22 years. A feat that any normal man’s body would shudder at. From the Wandoan boy climbing on his first bucking horse as a teenager, to Calgary, Cheyenne, Pendleton, almost Las Vegas and back, Dave has tasted success on some of the biggest cowboy stages. He’s won in arenas that so many have only dreamed of just nodding their heads in. But if you ask him, he’ll play it down. “I’m not one for bragging” he told me some years ago. Nothing has changed. That’s just Dave Worsfold for you, quietly spoken and painfully humble. Never a man to make too much of a fuss about himself, Dave has always done most of his talking with his spurs. And in a fashion we’ve all become accustomed to from the Queensland grazier, he rode Gill Bros’ ‘Jewel’ to 82 points in the final round of the 2023 APRA national finals rodeo, quietly tipped his hat and unassumingly closed the book on what was one of the greatest bareback riding careers Australia has seen. “I always wanted to pull up on my terms, when I was still at the top and riding good,” He’d ventured into rodeoing the same way many do, starting out on junior steers and dabbling in the bull riding. But as a young kid who had always been around horses and grown up on the land, bareback riding appealed to Dave. “They used to have practice sessions at The Great Western Hotel in Rockhampton. One day they run some horses up and a few of us just got on to have a go for fun. I liked it right from that very first time.” While the adrenalin rush had him hooked right from the beginning, Dave admits what most of us would assume. “It was pretty painful at the start.”

TRY HARD. DONT QUIT.

“The more I got on the easier it came to me.” The guidance of older cowboys Brad Howe, Shane O’Brian and Darryl Doyle set Dave up for rodeo success. “They got me started.” But it was the overseas experience of riding bucking horses in the PRCA that really gave him (and everybody else) a taste of how good he could be. Some big moments early in his career are still among Dave’s favourite bareback riding memories. “As a younger fella, I went to Calgary and won the novice there. I always think back to that. And cracking 90 for the first time.” That said 90-point ride was aboard ‘Assault,’ the famed bronc from Rafter G Rodeo’s string, who also retired recently. Seems rather fitting. Fast forward several decades, Dave is still adamant “the adrenalin always outweighs the pain,” but the time seemed right to hang it up. In his opinion, “taking a beating and then getting on another one, the physical aspect,” is the hardest part of bareback riding. And although he’s been relatively lucky, with minimal injuries throughout his career, it was getting harder to bounce back after each weekend. He already knows he’s going to miss “the fun of it, the adrenalin rush. And my mates.” But he’s looking forward. One of the most dedicated and committed athletes to grace rodeo, Dave is ready to switch the focus to his kids. The dedicated father’s retirement plan involves “dialing back the fitness program, watching the girls barrel race and maybe going to a few campdrafts.” Dave Worsfold changed the sport of bareback riding in Australia. He raised the bar. His drive, dedication, commitment and desire to hone his craft has long been admired in rodeo circles. He has set the standard for bareback riding going forward. And to those cowboys of the future, “I wish I had of gone to more schools and learnt off of more people from the very start. Try and learn from the right fellas. Try hard. And don’t quit!”

The only thing not quite right in this picture is his noseband has ridden down. I’ll be conscious to adjust it to ensure it doesn’t cause him discomfort in the future.
