TOBY HALE DOMINATES! AUSTRALIAN PROFESSIONAL RODEO ASSOCIATION
FROM THE
NFR COMMITTEE
The dust has settled on the 2023 Ariat APRA National Finals Rodeo and it’s time to give thanks to so many wonderful people and business who helped contribute to the event. Warning this maybe long winded! CONGRATULATIONS to our 2023 Australian Champions. APRA are very proud of you and your performance during the NFR.Congratulations to all qualifiers in fact – You made rodeo in Australia look good! There are so many people to thank & give credit to. The small NFR working group this year consisted of Brad Pierce in charge of stock, Brett Cross, Shane Iker, Ben Hall, Tom Willoughby, Leah Reilly and myself. Small but we got the job done. First and foremost, I want to thank Leah Reilly of Your Equine Agency, who works for APRA on Media and Corporate Partnerships. Leah has taken the promotion of APRA and its competitors to the next level. Her involvement from liaison with sponsors to the layout of the event, she had a hand in or offered advice every step of the way. It is very rewarding to work alongside someone with professionalism and passion to see the sport, and in particularly the NFR event grow, and can see the huge potential for progression. APRA are very lucky to have Leah on their team and the future looks bright with her on board. Two others who contributed professional NFR promotion were our Photographer Cherie Reeves and media Jade Johnson. What a team! Special mention to the crew that helped to set up the venue – Mark Lyons, Brett Cross, Ian Watkins, Mitch Eastwell, Cameron Milner, Scott Perry, Brian and Tara Lovett, Shona Tribe and Jordan Iker. Eddie, Ryan and Jackson Gill, Brad Pierce and Rhys Angland who helped set up the sponsor area. Largely though we all need to thank Shane Iker. The thousands of dollars’ worth of machinery and equipment he donated for the finals is dumb founding. When I sit back and think of how much it would cost the Association if we had to hire this machinery and equipment – well we just simply wouldn’t be able to afford it. From the bob cat to the water truck, to the tractor and off-sets to plough the arena, the telehandler to hang signage from the roof, all the back yard panels, bulk fuel tanks to fill the generators, hay for presentations, trucks and vehicles to pick equipment up…the list goes on. We are extremely lucky to have the Iker family donate all this equipment and time to set up the NFR venue. The clean up crew as well consisting of Mark Lyons, Brett Cross, Brian Lovett, Shane and Jorja Iker and myself – the stayers – or the crazies? Two men that spent more hours than anyone else at the CQLX grounds working for the week leading into, and during the event. Brett Cross and Mark Lyons. These guys did absolutely everything you can think of – setting & cleaning up, fixing generators, sourcing equipment, getting the ground tip top for the barrel racers, rigging up satellite dishes for the roof to fix internet issues, raking for the barrel race, driving buggies, setting up and packing up the presentation trailer after it was all over and everyone else was a the bar – I even had them putting buckles in boxes at one stage! All volunteered time and no complaints! Mark had the rough end of the stick though helping me with all manual labour work leading into the event including getting into some difficult locations to put billboards up then dismantling AND worst of all putting up with a stressed wife with crazy ideas! Thank you just doesn’t cut it.

NFR COMMITTEE
FROM THE
This year I only had one goal for the NFR, and that was to make the competitors feel prestigious and special for qualifying – making them feel important. After seeing last year’s NFR feedback, that, along with improved communication where the two things I took away, that I knew APRA had to deliver on.The introduction of the Awards Ceremony and back number presentation I saw as a large part of achieving this, not only acknowledging the qualifiers at this event but also all the officials and stock contractors, recognition of the amazing achievements by competitors throughout the season including season earning records and most importantly our sponsors and Affiliates. I wanted to make sure everyone involved in the NFR was acknowledged. From all accounts and feedback it was a success, and a special thanks to those who helped me set up in a mad panic on Wednesday in Kacey and Annalise Kenny, Carlie Remfrey, Logan Lucas, Rebecca Blandford, Shona Tribe and Ryley Menz. Another special thanks to Shona Tribe. Shona stuck by my side all week helping out setting up. Her constant welfare checks to make sure I was OK and reassurance kept me going. Then during the event she took the lead with the flag bearers, grand entry and round winners and helping with chute bossing of the barrel race. A true hard-working member of our Executive Board and I am very grateful for her input and help. I want to acknowledge our lead stock contractors in Destiny Downs and Gill Brothers, but also the other professional stock providers including Rick Knudsen, Byron Remfrey, Peter Wallace, Dittmans, Tumbarrumba Rodeo Committee and BK Bucking bulls.Thank you for making our event and the sport look professional and thank you to Brad Pierce for having a hand in this. Thanks to our “voice” of the NFR Mr Tate Van Wel! You took the reins in that rodeo arena and made the show flow well. You made us look good on the international platform! Thanks to ALL APRA affiliates. Without your rodeos we would have no reason for a Finals. You are the reason competitors get to go down the road doing what they love. Thanks for making this one hell of a season. APRA truly appreciates each and every affiliate and their committees on our calendar. Our generous sponsors who will continue to be acknowledged through out the year. We know this event wouldn’t take shape without you, so competitors please remember - support those who support us. Thank you to the Cowboy Channel. When I received the phone call back in July directly from their Director of Strategic Planning, enquiring about the possibility of putting Australian Rodeo on their platform – well I almost thought it was a hoax. It seemed like a huge feat at the time. Soon following were several meetings directly with RFDTV and CC owner Patrick Gottsch – reality and determination set in to get this partnership happening. Months of talk and meetings were had, and a great relationship has now formed. We are extremely proud and appreciative of the Cowboy Channel for approaching us and generously supporting our NFR, whilst at the same time putting Australian rodeo on the international stage. This is a door opener for APRA, and we will be working hard to ensure a future partnership. Lastly thank you to YOU – the competitors, members and fans of this great Association. Your support and thanks for the NFR Working Group during and after the 2023 NFR has been overwhelming. Thank you for choosing to be a part of the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.

RODEO NEWS
NATIONAL FINALS RODEO The ariat apra national finals rodeo has been run and won! As the dust settles on an extremely successful production, we look back on what was a fantastic event filled with frills, thrills, and spills. The back number presentation hosted in the beer garden of valued sponsor Gracemere Hotel, set the mood, and highlighted all of the national finals qualifiers as they were presented with their coveted back numbers. The cowgirls embraced the opportunity to step outside the jeans and boots dress code, while the cowboys celebrated with bowties and beers. The fun and friendly vibe was replaced with fierce competition Thursday night, as Round 1 kicked off and the race for gold buckles was well and truly on. Standings leaders asserted their dominance early on with Ben Smith, Kai Clark, Toby Hale, Campbell Hodson, and Jesse Glass all standing their ground for a round win. Friday night’s Round 2 followed in step behind the phenomenal performance standard set on opening night. Allround cowboy standout Toby Hale proved why he’s just that, by cashing cheques at both ends of the arena. The young gun took the win in the Rope & Tie before marching down to the bucking chutes and reassuring everyone that his bull riding win from the night before was no fluke by taking second in the round. Saturday was Remembrance Day and in honour of those who fought for our freedom, Round 3 was opened with a tribute to our fallen soldiers and a minute’s silence. A do or die round for many title leaders, we saw some assert their positions, while in others events the door for some contenders opened slightly. Toby Hale won in another event, this time the team roping with partner Rope McPhee. Leanne Caban got her first round win in the Barrel Race, while Jarrod McKane won his second round in a row and third cheque of the rodeo in the Bareback Riding. As the stands started to fill for Saturday night’s Round 4, there were still a lot of uncertainties as to who was taking home a gold buckle. Leanne Caban, Jarrod McKane and Toby Hale were safe bets. For other events, the final round wins and average payouts ultimately dictated the eventual Australian Champions. As gold buckles and trophy saddles closed out the show, the whispers started to emerge that we’d just experienced the best National Finals Rodeo in a long time. From competitors to personnel to bucking stock, performances were spectacular and an absolute credit to everyone involved. And the most exciting thing, you can relive it all on the Cowboy Channel!

AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION
ALLROUND COWBOY
This is proof to myself that all of what I have gone through, inside and outside of the arena, was worth working hard and staying dedicated for.
TOBY HALE
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION
ALLROUND COWGRIL
This one is no less special then the first! The time that I spend in the roping pen takes no less dedication then training a barrel racing horse. I was 17th position at the end of the season in the Breakaway Roping and that event is just as hard to qualify in as the barrel race. So even though a little disappointed I didn’t get to go in that event, I was still super proud of myself and my horses for the year I had. Then to top it off with winning the Allround Cowgirl title for the fourth time in my career, I was absolutely stoked!
LEANNE CABAN
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION
Jarrod McKane, at the ripe old age of 22, now has two Australian Bareback Riding titles. The shearer from Chiltern, proved that winning the big rodeos during a season can have a major impact on the end result when he claimed victory at both Cloncurry and Mount Isa late in the season. Carrying that form into the NFR he placed in every round, winning the second one and placing in the average to run down Brendon Crawley for a gold buckle. In Jarrod’s words, “it was pretty close.” Injury free and feeling game fit from a run of lead up rodeos, Jarrod knew the gold buckle was “anyone’s game. It was a matter of seeing how it played out.” A dream draw in round 2 saw him matched up with Rosie’s Boy of Gill Bros. “It’s the one everyone wants to get on.” His favourite ride of the NFR and 84.5 points later, and the quiet cowboy had edged his way closer to the 2023 gold buckle. Although when the rounds were all said and done, he wasn’t so sure. “I thought Dave Worsfold might have won it as he had done better in the rounds than me.” The young superstar hadn’t been paying the standings and points too much attention. “I didn’t really look. I had a thought I was close.” A game plan to stay in his own lane and focus on riding the bucking horses he drew proved beneficial and he wasn’t going to let the numbers distract his early momentum. “You can only do your best, and as long as you do that you’ve got to be happy with yourself.” Fond of being the quiet achiever, and fully committing to anything he sets his mind to, a second Australian title was always on Jarrod’s goal list. His first gold buckle, in 2021, came from an almost unbeatable lead going into the NFR. This one feels “maybe a little more special” after he chased it down in the back half of the season. Proof that we should never count Jarrod McKane out. Proud of his efforts, the magnitude of being crowned an Australian champion is not lost on the bareback rider. “It’s always special standing up there in front of everyone. It sends shivers down your spine. There’s no better feeling.”
What’s it take to be an Australian Champion?
Everything you’ve got.
JARROD MCKANE
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION
BREAKAWAY ROPER The Breakaway Roping is always hotly contested. Alyesha Burford had a substantial head start on the rest of the field of cowgirls, but Jane Ryan was quietly confident that she could catch up to her, even from the middle of the pack. A round win on opening night for Jane boosted that confidence. As the rounds progressed there were still several girls in the mix for the title going into round 4. Another round win, this time shared with Maisy Hetherington, saw Jane jump to the average win and cement her second Australian title by a mere $969. With limited practice leading into the NFR due to work, family and mum responsibilities, Jane admits she felt underdone in terms of preparation. “I don’t get to run a lot of practice calves. I’m home a lot by myself with the kids, so Lexi (3) was letting calves out for me. I just concentrate on the basics and make sure Deadly is feeling confident and working good.” Jane credits her little gelding Deadly as a huge part of her success. “He runs anything down for me and always gives me a chance to win. I knew I had a lot of work to do to catch Alyesha, and that would mean trying to win rounds and stay in the average. But I knew I had the horsepower, and if the roping went my way, I had a chance.” A mistake and a miss in round 2 was not in the game plan. “I’m really good at making things hard for myself.” She bounced back in Round 3 and as round 4 rolled around, a gold buckle was a slim chance. However, it seemed unlikely to Jane. “I knew I needed a round win and to find my way back into the average. I also knew I had drawn a tough calf, and a bunch of the girls were roping great.” As she watched cowgirl after cowgirl fail to catch in the final round, Jane sensed a small opportunity. “About halfway through that round I realised things were going my way. I had a really strong calf, and I needed to rope aggressive and do my job. I had nothing to lose.” Handling such pressure situations is a matter of experience in Jane’s opinion. “It’s just got easier over the years. And my little girls are wonderful distractions. They keep me very busy. To be honest, some days I’m just amazed that we show up dressed and on time, let alone that I actually rope good or win anything.” As far as this win goes, Jane is happy to live in the moment and not worry too much about what lies ahead. For now it’s back to family and home life. “Deadly will get a little spell.I’ve never been too good at celebrating my wins so I’m just going to try and enjoy the moment.” What’s it take to be an Australian Champion?
A great horse, a great support system, a lot of belief and a little bit of luck.
JANE RYAN
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION
TEAM ROPING HEADER Ben Smith and his partner Kai Clark brought more form with them to Gracemere than maybe any of the other competitors. Fresh off a big win at Warwick Rodeo and a Mount Isa Rodeo win a few months earlier, the Moonbi header was always going to be solid under pressure. Known for his ability to reach and let it go fast, Ben sent a clear message early on that he wanted a second Australian title. The NSW duo won the opening round and then backed it up the next night to win again. Although that wasn’t the plan. “I didn’t go there to win rounds. I wanted to rope smart, just catch everything, not safety up but not take silly shots.” After two sizzling round wins, their no time in round 3 would’ve derailed a lot of cowboys. But the pair bounced back to cash cheques in round 4 and the average. How does an Australian champion handle the pressure of such a situation? “I don’t think about it. I like to break a run down and keep it simple. I knew that last steer was slower, that I needed to stay off the barrier and just go get it caught.” Succes in team roping is built around a partnership and they don’t come much stronger, or laid back, than Ben and Kai’s. “If I can read the line and the cow right and get it on it, all I have to do is be patient through the corner and let Kai do his job. The more I can set it up for Kai, the faster we can be.” Ben acknowledges that the confidence that the team roper’s draw from each other is a huge part of their success. “He’s confident in me and I’m confident in him.” “The reassurance you get from your partners is one of the biggest confidence builders you can have.” That coupled with the support from friends and family has played a crucial role in Ben’s success. “Everyone is always pushing me to be better. And Drifter plays a huge role too.” Drifter is Ben’s fancy buckskin mount and also the 2023 Heading Horse of the Year. “Without a great horse, you’re nothing.” For Ben, back-to-back gold buckles are a humbling reward for hours spent honing his craft and his horses. “For me it’s always been about trying to get better and be a better roper.” What’s it take to be an Australian Champion?
Consistency and determination. And wanting to better yourself every run that you make.
BEN SMITH
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION
TEAM ROPING HEELER Kai Clark is possibly the most casual cowboy you’ll meet, until he backs in the rope box. And then the Wallabadah heeler is all business. Kai’s made a regular habit out of cleaning them up on the back end for partner Ben Smith, especially on the big stages. While Cameron Milner had the lead in the title race, Kai proved on opening night he wasn’t keen to give up his Australian Champion bragging rights without a fight. By Round 2, it was clear he was serious. “Benny’s plan was to go there and catch everything. I don’t really have plans, I just react. If the shot’s there to be quick, I’m going to take it” admits Kai. The laid-back roper backs his ability to read the play and credits his and Ben’s success to the partnership they have built. Roping together for the past seven years, the duo are “like an old married couple. I know what Ben’s doing or how he’s going to respond in any run. We’ve just made that many runs together.” While Ben and Kai have shared some big wins in their careers and now back-to-back Australian titles, it’s their friendship outside the arena that Kai cherishes the most. “The people I have around me are a big part of my success.” Ben and Lauren Smith and the Southern family are among those he lists as pivotal players in his gold buckle win. “Ben really helped me take my roping to the next level.” And that paint mare he rode, that’s Lauren’s barrel horse. “And Lisa Southern, Mother Lisa, if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t have been at the NFR.” Not a numbers man or one to even know how the odds are stacking up, Kai says he leaves that stuff up to Lisa. “She sat me down before the last round and told me what I needed to do.” A fourth-place finish sealed the deal for the cowboy’s second gold buckle. For a young man who’s made roping a priority, the win is bittersweet. A reward for the unseen work, and all the hours spent working on his roping. “This year was up and down a bit. It’s been a lot of hard work and miles, all the blood, sweat and tears. It hasn’t really sunk in yet.” What’s it take to be an Australian Champion?
Commitment and dedication.
KAI CLARK
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION
SADDLE
BRONC RIDER Cameron Southern was a red-hot favourite going into the NFR. The saddle bronc riding sensation from St George had shattered season’s earnings records on the 2023 rodeo trail, however so had Jordan Iker. A battle at the top of the standings all year long, came down to the final round of the NFR, as the two young talents climbed aboard their last bronc each. Undeterred by the pressure situation, Cameron showcased his abilities to win the round, secure an average placing and claim the Saddle Bronc Riding title. Going into that last round, Cameron knew he had drawn a horse that he could win on. Cowboy Classic of Gill Bros had carried him to wins in previous big moments. “I’ve won Nebo on him. I’d won on him at Sydney Royal this year.” But when the whistle blew, he wasn’t quite sure this time. “I didn’t think I’d done enough to win the round. He feels like a big rocking chair when you ride him properly and I obviously rode him good enough to make him feel softer than what he was.” The win was a satisfying way to finish out the NFR after injury ruled him out of his favourite event, the Bull Riding. “I really wanted to ride my broncs well and I didn’t have a lot of breathing room for the title” admitted the former Bull Riding Australian Champion of his decision to not get on his last two head of bulls. A broken thumb as a result of his second-round bull ride left him contemplating riding bulls with his other hand, but instead he chose to focus solely on the saddle bronc riding. “The Saddle Bronc title is the one Dad has always wanted me to win.” Going into the NFR a fresh new bronc saddle had him “a little worried” but the young gun decided to back himself and his abilities and “keep it simple. You can’t overthink anything.” Known to throw caution to the wind, Cameron’s secret to success lies in muscle memory and remembering why he loves riding bucking horse. “I knew I could do it, as long as I was having fun.” A second Australian title, in a second event cements the fun-loving cowboy’s abilities amongst the best Australia has seen at the rough stock end of the arena. A special feat achieved by few cowboys. “It feels really good to win a title in two different events.” What’s it take to be an Australian Champion?
Hardwork. Set a goal and make sure you chase it.
CAMERON SOUTHERN
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION
ROPE & TIE
Mitch Eastwell went to the NFR keen to win a second Australian title. Only $1010 separated him from Pro Tour winner Campbell Hodson and Shane Kenny. But neither of those cowboys give anything away without a fight. After splitting the first round win with Campbell, it was apparent that every run was going to matter. Mitch didn’t see another cheque until round 4, but a solid week of roping had him atop the average and claiming the gold buckle. Going into that last round Mitch didn’t really know how the numbers added up. “All I knew was I had a good calf and if I did my job, I was good for the average. I didn’t really know how close I was to Campbell and Shane.” The full-time carpenter had left home with the goal of making four solid runs, which would hopefully lead to a good average cheque and a shot at the Australian title. But a lot has changed since his last one, five years ago. “The competition has really stepped up. It was just good to be in the mix.” With a gold buckle race comes a lot of pressure. Although Mitch doesn’t let it bother him, knowing he’s done the work and built the muscle memory back at home in Warwick. “Preparing yourself at home before you go is the biggest thing. If you can’t do it at home, you can’t do it at the rodeo.” Fitting it in around his full-time work, Mitch’s practice sessions consist of running calves off his horse and “a lot of groundwork,” trying to put himself in situations that he might face at a big rodeo. And when those big rodeos and big moments arrive the roper is not only ready, but he enjoys them. “I think the bigger the atmosphere and the crowd, the better. You just sort of get to switch off and go do your job, just like at home.” While the quiet spoken cowboy plans on a quiet summer riding and roping on some young horses, he has no plans on slowing the rodeoing down in 2024. “I’m not going to change anything. We’ll go at them again next year and try to make the finals and see how we go.” With fresh bragging rights as the new Australian Champion, Mitch still has admiration for his peers and the caliber of Rope & Tie cowboys he’s up against. “It’s just good to be in the mix really.” What’s it take to be an Australian Champion?
Good preparation, dedication. And you’ve got to put 150% into what you want to do and what you love.
MITCH EASTWELL
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION
BULL RIDER
Nobody really believed Toby Hale could be beaten for the Bull Riding Australian title. Mathematically, it was possible. Theoretically, it was unfathomable. The standout cowboy from Sarina, had been nothing short of dominating all year long. He continued that dominance into the NFR, winning the opening round and eventually the average. Toby smashed multiple season earning records and collected a swag of Rookie and Pro Tour buckles in multiple events in 2023, but all he’s ever really wanted is a Bull Riding gold buckle. Being “fit and as strong as possible” was Toby’s strategy to endure the grueling 4 rounds as a 3-event cowboy at the NFR. “My game plan was to be feeling 100% physically. And also mentally. I did a lot of visualizing, visualizing positive thoughts and actions.” Seemingly mature beyond his years, the teenager admits his NFR rounds were full of ups and downs. “I focused a lot on the wins. But the most important thing for me was to enjoy everything.” Each day “I loved seeing what bull I had.” Once the draws were known each round, all Toby’s focus was on “making the whistle on that bull no matter what.” With a bull-by-bull mindset throughout the rounds, the young gun edged further and further in front of the rest of the pack of bull riders. The will and drive to continually better himself has proved a solid recipe for success, and as the last bull bucked to close out the 2023 NFR, Toby’s childhood dream had become reality. While his new gold buckles take pride of place in his 2023 haul, Toby admits he wants more. “It’s onto the next stage in my life.” He’s USA bound to hopefully “make those yellow chutes” and show the world what he’s proven to himself and Australia all year long. That Toby Hale is not afraid to work hard, stay disciplined and reap the rewards. “Everything is a stepping stone to getting better. You can’t lose if you’re always getting better!”
What’s it take to be an Australian Champion?
It takes a lot of everything. Luck doesn’t get you to hold a buckle. It takes lots of sacrifices. And working very hard!
TOBY HALE
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION
STEER WRESTLER
Jesse Glass showed up to Gracemere to finish what he’d started. The cowboy, who’d based himself out of Destiny Downs in Emerald for most of the year had travelled the length and breadth of Australia throughout the season and built a substantial lead in the Steer Wrestling. After a stellar 2023, Jesse had already earned the Rookie Steer Wrestling title and the Pro Tour title, but the gold buckle was the big goal for the 26yr old. And Riley Gibb showed up to do his best to deny Jesse that gold buckle. A solid preparation “running steers every day” and a plan to “go catch four steers clean” paid off for the Willow Tree native who started the NFR with a bang, winning the first round. “I kind of stubbed my toe a little in the second round” Jesse admits, but he rebounded in Round 3 for a cheque. However, Ryley wasn’t going away, and kept the pressure on the Rookie champ to keep showing up and getting it done. It would all eventually come down to the last steer of the season for Jesse. “I knew if I caught that last one clean, I was probably right.” He went on to win the round, win the average and his first Australian title. While not big on numbers and tallying points, Jesse said it was hard not to give it some thought. “Everyone was talking about it. It was probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do” Jesse said of the pressure that comes with leading the pack. The young steer wrestler kept himself distracted in the backyards for Destiny Downs. “I stayed busy running cattle for as long as I could every round so I didn’t get a chance to think about it.” Not afraid to dedicate his life to his sport and to put in the hard work, Jesse started the season with a goal to win the Rookie title. After a sizzling southern summer run, he realised that he also had a gold buckle chance. He turned that chance into reality, describing his big win as simply “an unbelievable feeling.” What’s it take to be an Australian Champion?
Being willing to run the steers at home, so that you can be on top at the end of the year.
JESSE GLASS
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION
BARREL RACER
It can be hard to beat youth and enthusiasm, but it’s harder to beat experience and wisdom. And it’s almost impossible to beat Leanne Caban and Akka Dakka on their day. The long-legged duo out of Emerald held off Rookie champion and teen sensation Adanni Walker by placing in every round, winning round 3 and the average to make it back-to-back Australian titles. “I knew it was going to be a tight finish this year. Adanni was trailing me by only a couple of hundred dollars going in.” Instead of worrying about the competition, the back-to-back champion focused on making four clean runs and “what myself and Akka could do.” The legendary combination did what they did all year long, and that’s make consistently fast runs. After a second place finish in the first two rounds, an angle adjustment to the first drum made all the difference in Round 3 as they claimed the win with the fastest time of the whole NFR. “I was out early in the round, and I knew I had to go for that round win.” An almost tipped drum in Round 4 and Leanne’s “heart nearly stopped. My judgement of when to let Akka start to turn the second drum was slightly off and we near knocked it over.” It stayed up. And they stopped the clock for four clean runs, four round cheques, the average win, and The Australian title. “I was so relieved to make that clean run. I knew we had done enough.” A long-time barrel racer and fierce competitor, Leanne’s first Barrel Racing title last year was a long time coming. This second one solidifies her and Akka Dakka amongst the best of the best. “I think it was a little bit more special this time. More emotional.” Akka Dakka will now get a well-deserved rest until the new year and Leanne will take time to regroup. But we’re sure to see them back on the rodeo trail in 2024. “While I have such a talented athlete like Akka Dakka, I would like to win as many barrel races as possible and hopefully this leads to another Australian Title.” While her equine partner Akka Dakka is a huge part of her success, Leanne acknowledges her other key ingredient to her success “is undoubtedly my husband Dale.” The backbone of the Caban family, Dale takes care of all the farrier duties, helps keep the trucks and trailers on the road and all the animals fed. “What more could a cowgirl need?” asks Leanne. What’s it take to be an Australian Champion?
It takes dedication, determination, but it also takes a village!

KAPUNDA, SA Rodeo The Kapunda Rodeo was held on Saturday 18th November 2023 in Kapunda, South Australia, and their committee is hailing it to be one of the best Rodeos they've ever had. Some of our competitors started their day early, with a judging clinic at the Kapunda Rodeo Grounds, with about a dozen members attending. This gave participants the opportunity to learn new skills and update past knowledge. We look forward to seeing some new judging faces at some of our up-and-coming rodeos. The gates opened a bit after lunch and spectators steadily poured in to gain prime position around the arena. The whole area was packed with food and drink vendors and plenty of entertainment for the kids. As the clock ticked closer to the start time, the crowd had swelled to a sold-out capacity which had not been seen since before COVID, and there was definitely a buzz of anticipation in the air. Riders lined up with flags at the ready, flying into the arena to the delight and applause of the crowd. Various competitors were introduced, and the National Anthem was sung, ending with a vigorous cheer from all sides of the arena. The first half of the program consisted of mostly the timed events, Breakaway Roping, Team Roping, Barrel Racing, Steer Wrestling and The Steer Roping (Rope & Tie), Junior Steer Riding and the 2nd Div Bull Ride were also included before the break. All taking advantage of the daylight saving hours. During the half time break, one of our junior competitors was awarded a vest and fuel voucher from and anonymous donor, as an encouragement award. Merey Colquhoun, President of the Festival State Rodeo Circuit (FSRC) presented the award to Jake Dall’Aglio, who thanked his parents and everyone who has helped him along the way. It wasn’t long before the action recommenced and the rough stock were bursting into the arena, giving the cowboys plenty of challenging rides and a great spectacle for the audience. The evening was drawing to a close, but not before the Team Roping Shoot Out was held which unfortunately nobody won, and then finally presentations for Team Roping, the Neville Clancy Memorial award went to Glen Perkins and Tom Willoughby. The Dick White Memorial for Saddle Bronc was awarded to Dean Oliver. Congratulations to all the competitors for making this a great rodeo. The band played to a packed crowd well into the night and it looked very much like everyone was having a wonderful time. Congratulations must be given to the Kapunda Rodeo committee for all their hard work which resulted in a fantastic Rodeo. Don’t forget Barossa Timed Event Rodeo on 16th December, Carrieton Rodeo on New Years Eve, then Peterborough Rodeo 2 weeks later on the 13th of January and finishing at the end of the month 27th of January with Wilmington Night Rodeo. We look forward to seeing competitors and spectators there.

Promoter Spotlight
Gene and Nicole McDonald love that rodeo brings theirs (and others) families together. And when Gene and Nicole’s families are brought together, they bring a wealth of experience and knowledge of the rodeoing, cowboying and showman lifestyle to the table. Together, with Gene’s sister Nikita and her partner Luke Toull, they’ve brought to life M5 Rodeo Promotions. “It’s only the 4 of us, but I think that’s why our events have been so successful, because Nikita has a real showman aspect, and Gene and I have the rodeo aspect covered.”
Luke Toull & Nikita McDonald with little Lottie.
With 7 events scheduled on the APRA calendar for 2024, M5 Rodeo Promotions has grown into a household name in rodeo circles. They’re known for their fun filled family atmosphere, cowkid hour and providing both spectators and competitors with a rodeo experience to remember. “We saw an opportunity and we took it and it’s grown from there,” said Nicole. Noticing a decline in rodeos on the calendar, and aging committees, Nicole admits their goal is to “bring rodeos back to these communities and educate our patrons about rodeo.” “Cowkids hours is something that we are really proud of. It’s a free activity where the local kids get to have the opportunity to swing ropes, get on a bucking dummy, get a photo with a horse, free face painting etc. We believe by educating the patrons of our way of life and inviting them in to see how things work we are increasing the longevity of our sport so that it will be around for our grandchildren.”
Nicole & Gene McDonald with sons Slater, Carter & Lawson.
While M5 Rodeo Promotions plans to keep delivering well run rodeos and building a steady, sustainable growth, Nicole hints that they may have something exciting up their sleeve. “We have something in the pipeline that has never been done before. It’ll definitely be an event people will want to get to!”
