Firstly I would like to introduce myself, my name is Brett Cross and I am your Roping Director.

I would like to thank you for the chance to be your Director, I am passionate about rodeos and look forward to helping my fellow members with any concerns, queries or anything we can talk about to improve the competition for the Breakaway Roping and Calf Roping. Feel free to give me a call or email me.

It isn’t a great time at the moment for rodeos but the Board will keep you posted with any news and when rodeos will be able to start up again.

NON STANDARD EVENTS AT RODEOS All rodeos must go through an approval process. For a rodeo to be approved, each committee fills in an application form and are asked to stipulate the standard events they wish to run, along with a list of approved non-standard events. These non-standard events have been approved by the Board of Directors and the APRA’s insurers. If there is an event a committee wishes to run not on the approved list there is an application form that must be filled out seeking approval. Is it vital that any non-standard events are declared, and go through the appropriate risk management review. Nondisclosure of events run at rodeos will jeopardise rodeo affiliation which may leave a committee and its event unaffiliated and uninsured.

GROUND RULES Competitors, a reminder that it is extremely important to follow all ground rules set by the committee at a rodeo.

They are set for various reasons ie: hiring of grounds, liquor licensing, insurance etc. so please adhere to them and help the committee run again for years to come!

JUDGES Should you take a judging position at a rodeo you intend to compete at a replacement judge must be employed for that particular event in its entirety and our Head Office must be notified of this official no later than 2 weeks prior to the rodeo. Judges who officiate an event they compete in will be disqualified and fined.

PRODDER USE 33.24 Timed event contractors are only permitted to use an electric prodder with a maximum of 5000 volts and no larger than 20cm in length. A prodder can only be utilised by the approved contractor/sub-contractor at each rodeo who will be held responsible for any misuse.

This relates to all handling of timed event stock at a rodeo. Government regulations in each state must also be complied with. A first offence breach of this rule carries a fine of $500 to the approved stock contractor.

A second offence breach will be referred to the Board of Directors.

DAY MEMBERS ENTRY FEE COMMENCING 1ST JANUARY 2020 Rule 23.2 - All day memberships and entry fees are to be paid up in full to Central Entries when entering. All entry fees collected to be paid to the Committee before the commencement of their Rodeo. If a committee chooses to take their own day member entries they must follow the same rule. Payment will only be accepted by Eftpos DAY MEMBERS ARE STILL REQUIRED TO ATTEND THE SECRETARY’S OFFICE TO SIGN A DAY MEMBERSHIP FORM. IN FAILING TO DO SO INSURANCE COVER WILL BE VOID.

Executive Desk Report NEW EXECUTIVE BOARD DIRECTOR Long standing member Brett Ryan has been appointed as an Executive Board Director. We welcome Brett to our Board and are pleased to have another member to inject new ideas into our Association to share the work load undertaken by us.

RODEO UPDATE With all immediate APRA affiliated rodeos Australia wide now postponed or cancelled, the APRA would like to advise members, committees and stakeholders that we are working with future security of the Association and sport a priority. Communication and brand awareness will not be compromised during this time.

This April Rodeo News will be the last edition until rodeos can safely run again. Please keep your eye on our website and online calendar for updates.

Subscribers will have their subscriptions extended for issues missed.

As we move through this period, we encourage members to continue supporting the APRA and the sport of professional rodeo in Australia by engaging in our media activities, sharing the good news stories when they arise and of course, being ready to compete when we are given the all clear!

The APRA has been the affiliating body of professional rodeo in Australia since 1944, a responsibility we take great pride in and one that we will continue for many years to come. Anyone not directly involved in the Rodeo is not permitted behind the chutes. Paying the levy portion of an entry fee at a rodeo is not allowed. If a competitor is unable to compete they may have someone pay their FULL entry fee for them to avoid a turnout fee. Only exception is if on the day, a judge agrees to a visual turnout due to injury. The contestant will then only be liable for the APRA and committee levies plus GST if applicable.

Vale Ted Hinze 1934 – 2020 One of Australia’s most popular rodeo announcers from the late 60s right through to the late 90s, Ted Hinze, became more famous than many of the cowboys he spoke about.

Ted announced all of the big ones year after year and was a good friend to many on the rodeo trail as well as his fans everywhere.

During the 1980s, Ted took up radio announcing with 2TM Tamworth, primarily at night when the Country Music Hoedown was broadcast. His knowledge of rodeo proved invaluable to the Association during the weekly ARRA and later APRA calls on Wednesday’s at 9pm.

Ted passed away aged 86 and will be missed by many of his close friends and rodeo mates.

Vale Steve Atkins 1961 – 2020 Australian Rodeo says farewell to long and outstanding gold card member of the Association, Steve Atkins better known as ‘Fez’.

Born and raised in WA, he joined the then Australian Rough Riders Association (ARRA) as a kid in 1977, starting out as a 2 event hand in the bareback and bull riding but choosing bull riding out of the 2 events.

Fez made the move to the eastern states because of the availability of rodeos being a 12 month pro tour as he always had his sights on being among the elite top 15 bull riders to make the National Finals Rodeo which he achieved many times even towards the end of his three decades of bull riding.

He was invited to an over 40s bull ride one time however he declined the offer as he said he was still competing at pro level and had just recently won another state title.

sat around and tossed about the idea of conducting a rodeo and after contacting long-time friend and stock contractor Garry McPhee of McPhee Rodeo Co we saw the first Chiltern Rodeo and Fez was the first president.

In America they had a legendary bull rider Freckles Brown who had songs written about him and why not, he was riding bulls at 46 years of age, an awesome feat for sure but here in Australia Fez was still winning at 47.

Steve ‘Ferret’ Atkins, a gold card member, bull rider and allaround good bloke will most certainly be missed by so many from all walks of life and his love of life made him an inspiration to many.

When he spoke of rodeo contractors he could speak of generations of them and it was the same story when he spoke of cowboys and stock.

His and Kelvin Duke’s passion for rodeo will continue through the Chiltern Rodeo, left in the very capable hands of one of their best mates, Micheal Phibbs and the Phibbs family and many committee members.

When you were heading down the road with Fez, and plenty did, the story was always the same. What an awesome fun guy to travel with, always capable of being a scallywag so he had fun and so did anyone who was with him.

The fact he was solid as a rock and as genuine as a sunrise came through to his students when he would conduct bull riding clinics.

It was the same when he finally retired and became a judge.

Next year will see the introduction of the Steve Atkins and Kelvin Duke Memorial Bull Ride as well as Bareback Ride.

On behalf of his friends, many of who became like family including myself, we send our condolences to all his friends and family.

We say farewell to one of the toughest cowboys we’ve known who was as solid as a rock.

Thanks for the memories champion.

He always stood behind the score and decisions he made which reflected his honesty.

Peter Norman Poole 2 8 . 7. 3 8 – 2 2 . 2 . 2 0 Photos by Mike Kenyon The funeral chapel was full to overflowing for the funeral of perhaps the best-known name in Australian Rodeo, that of Peter N. Poole.

The crowded room sat in silence as Willie Nelson opened the service with ‘My heroes have always been cowboys,’ a fitting song for the man whose life from an early age had been all about rodeo.

Peter was already well-known on the rodeo circuit when he was asked to take on the role of secretary of the Australian Rough Riders Association (ARRA) in about 1957. He competed in almost every event and was hard to beat but his real forte was in writing rodeo articles for the RM Williams magazine Hoofs and Horns.

He opened the Warwick office of the ARRA in 1959 and worked for the Association until 1979.

He was the 1957 Australian Steer Wrestling Champion, the 1959 Queensland Champion and was runner-up Victorian Champion the same year.

In 1978 Peter’s definitive book, ‘Rodeo in Australia’ was printed which complemented his many articles in Hoofs and Horns, Australasian Rodeo, Australian Western Horseman and another fine book titled ‘50 Years of Warwick Rodeo.’

Peter wrote a second edition of ‘Rodeo in Australia’ which was not published.

During the late 1960s, 70s and 80s, Peter judged most of Australia’s biggest rodeos, quite often with his long-time friend and rodeo champion Ray Crawford.

Peter was a long-serving member of the Warwick Rodeo committee, he won the bulldogging there in 1958, he judged there and was also chute boss for more years than most can remember.

Peter was awarded the ARRA Sportswriter of the Year in 1982 and was appointed official historian for the Association in 1984. A short time later, Peter was asked to document the rodeo display at the Australian Stockmans’ Hall of Fame in Longreach.

Starting in 1982, Peter’s monthly page in the ARRA and then APRA Rodeo News, titled Peter Poole Writes, became the most read article and a highlight of the magazine.

In 2016, Peter was inducted into the Australian Rodeo Hall of Fame.

This is only a small part of the accolades of the man who started life in humble circumstances in Gosforth, Newcastle-on-Tyne, Northumberland, England in 1938.

He grew up during World War II and was moved away from the areas being bombed to his uncle’s farm further north and this move piqued his interest in all things rural and animal related.

The Hollywood westerns were his favourite movies and by the age of 12, he knew his future lay with horses and cattle.

Although Peter wanted to go to America initially, his opportunity to immigrate to Australia came about when the sister of Sir William McBride, a South Australian grazier, took her motor vehicle into Peter’s father’s garage for repair in the early 1950s.

To immigrate back then, a young man needed a sponsor and Sir William agreed to take the young Englishman to work on his Kangaroo Island sheep property.

Peter’s introduction to Australian country life was brutal for a young Englishman but he was

soon was very highly regarded because of his work ethic.

On a day off in 1953, Peter went to Marrabel Rodeo and watched Alan Woods ride the previously unridden bucking horse, Curio, and his mind was made up and set.

As soon as his time was worked out on Kangaroo Island, Peter flew to Queensland, purchased a motorcycle and set out on the rodeo circuit.

With no competition experience and very little ‘knowhow,’ Peter entered the novice and open bullock rides at Dingo Rodeo in Central Queensland only to meet the hard ground very quickly. One by-stander was heard to tell Peter that bullock riding was too tough for a ‘pommy’ and the name of ‘the pommy jackaroo’ was born.

Peter then teamed up with Eidsvold rider Mervyn Payne and a life-long friendship began.

He also became firm friends with Alwyn Torrenbeek and Lindsay Payne. They headed to Bluff Rodeo the next weekend where he entered both events again only to win the novice and place in the open.

Rodeo prizemoney was never good enough to make a living so between rodeos, Peter worked for the Payne family on Winston Station as a ringbarker. Later, in order to make his way around the rodeo circuit, Peter worked as a drover, shearer, fruitpicker, ringer and even spent time on the rabbit fence.

As time went by, Peter learned to master most rodeo events but found his place in the bulldogging and went on with a great deal of success in this event.

At an ARRA general meeting near Townsville in about 1957, it was decided the Association needed a fulltime secretary to keep records, write a newsletter and to liaise with rodeo committees.

Two names were put forward, Martin Quinlivan who worked in Adelaide for RM Williams and had been a part-time secretary, and Peter Poole. The vote looked like Quinlivan was going to win until buckjump legend Jack Sullivan stood up and said a secret ballot should be held as, “Mart is judging the rodeo tomorrow.”

The rest is history. Peter won.

Bonny Young said Peter would sit in a tin shed at Dally Holden’s H5U property outside Townsville and bang away one-fingered on an old typewriter day after day.

A short time later, Peter went to RM Williams’ property Rockybar at Eidsvold where he learnt to type before heading to Warwick to open the new head office.

Warwick was chosen because it was half-way between the southern and northern rodeos.

The first office was in the Mangan Building at 79A Fitzroy Street and later, at the famous address, 44 Palmerin Street, right opposite the Warwick Cenotaph precinct.

In 1964, Peter married Deanna (Anna) Reid, daughter of Warwick optometrist Robert. They met during Peter’s regular visits to the Warwick Daily News where Anna worked.

As a result, Natalie, Lara and Taos were born to the family and a generation later, Peter and Anna became grandparents.

Peter devoted some 67 years to Rodeo in Australia remaining a loyal, hardworking and enthusiastic supporter until the day of his death.

Peter’s legacy, of course, is in his family and the imprint he made on Australian Rodeo but his collection of records, photos and articles in his office is a museum in its own right.

Jarrod McKane

At just 18 years old Jarrod McKane is the fresh new face of Bareback riding in the APRA. In only a few short years the Wodonga local has gone from a complete

beginner to the cowboy to beat in this year’s bareback riding pro tour race, as well as the rookie

race. In 2020 “I wanted to win the rookie bareback title and go as high as I could in the pro tour as well.” A sensational start to the season has inspired the determined cowboy to reassess his goals and aim higher, with his sights now also set on the Rookie of the Year title. He is keen to make an impact as, “you don’t really hear of many bareback riders winning it.”

While he’s made great impressions with his bareback riding skills, the cowboy life started for Jarrod at a bull ride. “I started out on junior steers and kind of went from there. I’d met a fella at a bull ride, and he said come out and get on a few.” The transition to bareback riding came simply from a suggestion of a friend. “I was riding bulls for a bit and my good mate, Tom Phibbs, said I should give bareback riding a go. I thought, why not?” It didn’t come naturally though, Jarrod openly admits “it took me a while to get the hang of it. I was always getting bucked off everything.”

His progress from falling off the first bareback horse he ever got on that “basically just cantered around in a circle,” to winning rodeos is simply due to hard work and commitment Jarrod believes. “I just want to do good at it.” A win at K Ranch several years ago boosted his confidence that success was achievable, and he hasn’t looked back since. “The first open horse I got on, I rode it and won it. I was like ‘oh was that a fluke?’ and then I won another one not long after that.” That little taste of winning spurred him on and inspired the cowboy, who works as a shearer through the week, to make sure he was staying fit and consistent.

round win on one of his favourite matchups, Little Egypt, proved just what Jarrod is capable of. 2020 has seen him dominate at the southern rodeos with big wins and big scores.

With his aggressive yet neat style, Jarrod has been impressing judges week in week out. Proof that his big 90 points on Queen of Spades at Chiltern in 2019 was no fluke, he repeated the feat on his favourite bronc at Finley earlier this year. With his eyes firmly on the pro tour and rookie races Jarrod admits that his end goal is quite simple. “I’d love to be an Australian champion one day.”
