‘There’s a lot to like in this selection of images’, Carl said. ‘The subject, colour, sense of movement and composition in each image combine to tell a good story. All of these images grabbed my attention and made me feel good.’

Flight paths by owen hearn (uK). this photo was taken at photographer owen hearn’s grandparents’ farm, which was formerly at the centre of the Bedfordshire site chosen for London’s third airport back in the late 1960s. ‘opposition to the planned airport stopped it going ahead, which is why i can photograph the wildlife on the farm today’, owen said. the 2012 Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition opens at the Australian Museum on 8 June with 100 awe-inspiring images.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year is co-owned by the natural history museum and bbc worldwide.
