The Australian Maritime College (AMC) is committed to delivering a highquality vocational maritime and coastal seafaring training experience. Maritime Operations and Coastal Seafaring Coastal Seafarers are hands-on and dynamic. From running catamaran tourist trips and fishing charters to working on rig tenders and off-shore vessels, seafarers are highly mobile. Our flexible courses are industry relevant and will provide you with a qualification that could take you anywhere. Our teaching staff have been recruited for their specialist seafaring skills and dedicated approach to training and student experience. This means when you study with us, you will have access to highly experienced staff with years of professional knowledge and valuable industry connections from around the world. Our facilities are world class to make your educational experience practical, applied, and job relevant. These include training vessels specific to your requirements, fully operational and equipped engineering workshops, navigation and engine room simulators, an electrical lab, a dedicated firefighting centre, survival at sea facilities, and seamanship workshops.

Maritime Operations A Maritime Operations qualification equips you with the skills and knowledge to perform duties relating to both the navigation and machinery of a vessel. Upon successful completion students may be eligible to gain a Certificate of Competency from the Australian Maritime and Safety Authority (AMSA). MARSS00008
Shipboard Safety Skill Set This skill set is Nationally accredited and required if you want to work on any small commercial fishing or trade vessel. This training sets you up for a career on the water. It provides you everything you need to work on a vessel. Duration:

Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal)
Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) will equip you with the necessary skills to command, safely and efficiently and operate the engines of a vessel less than 12 metres long with unlimited outboard engine propulsion, or inboard engines less than and 500 kilowatts. This course provides the required training component to qualify for a Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency (subject to assessment and sea-time requirements by AMSA). Duration:

Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal)
Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal) provides the skills and knowledge required to work as a General-Purpose Hand on-deck or in the engine room of a vessel up to 80 metres within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or in the engine room only for a vessel with propulsion power up to 3000 kW. This course applies to people working in entry-level positions, or those looking to expand on their skills and currently hold a Shipboard Safety Skill Set or Certificate of Safety Training.
• Shipboard Safety Skill Set - provides you with knowledge and skills to prepare and respond with emergencies at sea • Provide First Aid (HLTAID003) • Collision regulations – learning what actions should be taken to avoid collisions, understanding sound signals, navigational lights and day shapes • Coastal navigation - interpreting navigational charts, understanding features, plotting your position, measuring distances, passage planning and understanding buoyage • Seamanship – ropework, splicing and mooring lines • Engineering – operation and systems of inboard diesels, outboards, problem solving, basic servicing, pre start, running and shutdown checks • Learn by applying your knowledge on our range of motors and engineering equipment • Vessel handling – practically take control of different types of vessels, including berthing and mooring techniques

Maritime Operations (Deck) A Deck qualification equips you with the skills and knowledge to perform domestic duties relating to the navigation of vessels. Upon successful completion students may be eligible to gain a Certificate of Competency from AMSA. MAR30918
Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24m Near Coastal)
Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24m Near Coastal) is suitable for people working in the maritime industry as a Master on commercial vessels up to 24 metres in length within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ). This course provides the required training component to qualify for a Master up to 24m Near Coastal Certificate of Competency (subject to assessment and sea-time requirements by AMSA). Duration:

Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master up to 35m Near Coastal) is suitable for those seeking employment as Master of a commercial vessel up to 35 metres in length, within the EEZ. This course provides the required training component to qualify for a Master up to 35m Near Coastal Certificate of Competency (subject to assessment and seatime requirements by AMSA). Duration: Block A and B – 11 weeks (approximately) Block B - five weeks (approximately) Block B only is designed for students who already hold Master up to 24 metres near coastal and/or Master 24 Certificate of Competency Prerequisites: Adequate medical fitness Minimum age of 16 years Location: Launceston including practical training at Beauty Point and Bell Bay Course includes: • Shipboard Safety Skill Set - provides you with knowledge and skills to prepare and respond with emergencies at sea • Crew and vessel management • Cargo operations • Vessel stability • Propulsion and machinery operations and management • Working at heights and confined space entry Students studying this course are required to undertake an extended voyage(s) on the AMC vessel M.V. Bluefin. Voyages will be coastal and could take up to four days (three nights) in duration. Students are required to meet Shipboard Safety Skill Set and certain medical requirements prior to undertaking voyages on M.V. Bluefin. While on Bluefin, our 34 metre training vessel, you will: • Practice maneuvering, berthing and short round turns • Conduct night and day navigation watches • Navigate within proximity of hazards • Experience shipboard life and what it involves

Maritime Operations (Engineer) An Engineer qualification equips you with the skills and knowledge to perform duties relating to the machinery of a vessel. Integrated Ratings An integrated rating qualification equips you with the skills and knowledge required to commence or advance your career as a seafarer. Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Integrated Rating)

Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Integrated Rating) is the current pre-sea vocational training component for those who seek employment at sea as an Integrated Rating on ocean going vessels. This course provides the required training to qualify for Able Seafarer Deck, Able Seafarer Engine or Integrated Rating Certificates of Proficiency (subject to assessment and sea-time requirements by the AMSA). Following sea-service as an Integrated Rating, further courses may be undertaken for qualification as a Chief Integrated Rating, Deck Officer or Marine Engineering Officer.

Applicants should be an Australian citizen or holder of a Humanitarian Visa and enrolled in one of the following courses: Marine-related Vocational Education and Training; IR Training; Master<24 metres; Master <35 metres; Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Engineering); or Bachelor of Applied Science (Nautical Science). Amount: $2,500 Australian Mariners’ Welfare Society Scholarship The Australian Mariners Welfare Society (AMWS) is a nonprofit organisation that provides financial assistance to those organisations providing welfare services to seafarers visiting Australia and provides scholarships to promote the training and professional development of the children of seafarers or ex-seafarers of low or moderate financial means. The AMWS offers scholarships to assist students undertaking courses at AMC in relevant maritime disciplines. Two scholarships are available for application in Semester 1 and 2 each year.
