A note from the editor

Each edition of Blueprint allows me to pause and revisit what the College has collectively achieved; 2023 was certainly another full and successful year!

I’m sure I speak for many when I say the year has flown by! Term 4 often feels like the busiest term in a school, filled with final assessments, final sign ups, school events and celebrations.

When we gathered at The Last Roar events to celebrate 283 new graduates, it was apparent that although the days can be long, the years are short. Thank you to our families who partner with us to allow our young people to forge pathways in industry.

Please enjoy another brilliant edition which has been brought to life through wonderful imagery. Thank you to our Media and Communications Officer Renee who captures the stories (and photos) within the College so purposefully.

I look forward to seeing what 2024 brings as we welcome over 500 new students to the College, our biggest ever intake!

Deliberately Different A few years ago, we undertook an extensive project to clearly define who we are and what we stand for. Two words are echoed in all that we do, as we pride ourselves on being deliberately different.

Our deliberate difference has not gone unnoticed, with the AITC proudly receiving recognition in 2023 as a 5 Star Innovative School, an acknowledgement of our commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional education.

We were also honoured to be announced as the winner of the Ipswich Business Excellence Award, reinforcing our impact on the local business community in just a few short years.

Our students, who are the heartbeat of the AITC, achieve remarkable milestones. Congratulations to Ella for winning the prestigious Inaugural ‘WOW’ Award at the 2023 Sky Racing Gold Coast Racing Industry Awards. Congratulations to Teraya for her recognition as the School-Based Apprentice of the Year at the Queensland Training Awards and to Cody for his recognition as the Apprentice of the Year at the Plumbing and Gas Industry Awards. This showcases the calibre of individuals who continue to emerge from our College.

We are fortunate to host many guests at our College who inspire our students with the opportunities available when pursuing an industry career. It was a highlight to host Queensland’s Minister for Energy, Renewables, Hydrogen, Public Works, and Procurement, Mick de Brenni whose visit left our Energy Academy students excited about the future of the energy industry.

Giving back is part of our DNA, with every school volunteering to help local communities and beyond. It was truly humbling to return to Cambodia after a 3 year break due to the global pandemic. Over $120,000 was raised which enabled 31 young people to construct homes for Cambodian families as well as renovation works at the New Hope school.

We know that this impact will be felt for many generations.

These are just some of the highlights contained in this edition of Blueprint! I can’t wait to see what 2024 will bring.

upfront AITC IPSWICH TAKES HOME 2023 BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARD In a momentous evening filled with anticipation and excitement, the AITC Ipswich school emerged as a beacon of educational excellence, clinching the coveted award in the ‘Education, Training, and Skilling’ category at the 2023 Business Excellence Awards presented by the Ipswich Region Chamber of Commerce.

This recognition is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the team, who have worked to help students excel in both education and industry.

Despite being just 3 years young, the AITC school has been a welcomed addition to the city of Ipswich, with over 200 young people now proudly pursuing industry careers across Years 10 to 12.

Dave Breeze, Industry Operations Manager, expressed his pride in accepting the award on behalf of the dedicated staff and aspiring young minds at the College.

“This is a great achievement for a school that is relatively young, but it signifies the significant impact we are making in our community and underscores the tireless efforts of so many,” he remarked. Dave’s words capture the essence of the AITC: to not only provide quality education but also to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their chosen industries.

SCHOOL-BASED APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR WINNER Congratulations to Teraya, winner of the School-Based Apprentice of the Year, awarded by the Queensland Training Awards. She is a champion of AITC’s values. Teraya has almost completed a Cert III in business with sports focus with the amazing and supportive team at the Miami Aquatic Centre.

She works hard, does customer service, life guards, teaches swimming and trains hard in the pool. Teraya has a Cert II in community service which she says will set her up for her future in medical dispatching in the ER. Teraya’s best friend Jamie, also from the AITC, was a finalist and he is signed-up in a cabinet making apprenticeship with Soul Timber Designs (contracted to Maritimo) to handcraft decking and unique cabinetry for super yachts.

Jamie and Teraya were standouts as finalists for the Queensland Training Awards. They were chosen from 800 submitted nominations and we are proud of their achievements in industry and education.

The prestigious Queensland Training Awards have been shining a spotlight on excellence in training and the transformative power of skills since 1962. The awards showcase all that’s great about vocational education and training (VET) in Queensland, with categories for apprentices, trainees, vocational students, teachers and trainers, as well as training providers and employers.

GOLD COAST STUDENT NAMED APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR AT THE 2023 PLUMBING AND GAS INDUSTRY AWARDS In a night filled with celebration and recognition, Cody emerged as a shining star at the Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland, 2023 Plumbing and Gas Industry Awards. Cody’s dedication, technical expertise, and commitment to excellence propelled him to the top, earning him the prestigious title of ‘School Based Apprentice of the Year.’

A Year 11 student from the Gold Coast, Cody’s journey to success is nothing short of inspiring. Starting early in his career with a school-based apprenticeship in 2022 while in Year 10, he is diligently working hard towards completing his Year 12 Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Throughout his journey at the AITC Cody has demonstrated an unwavering passion for the plumbing industry and his tenacity and commitment did not go unnoticed by the judging panel, who were thoroughly impressed by his accomplishments to date.

Cody’s professional journey has been greatly influenced by his time at S & C Plumbing Services on the Gold Coast.

His employer, undoubtedly proud of his achievements, has consistently praised Cody’s impeccable work ethic, remarkable adaptability to feedback, and unwavering commitment to the job.

These qualities not only define him as an exceptional apprentice but also as a future leader in the plumbing and gas sector.

There was more than one AITC student being recognised at the Awards, with Jack and Lachlan also being named as finalists for school-based apprentice of the year. Jack was signed-up with GL Plumbing and Gas Pty Ltd and Lachlan was signed-up with GEP Plumbing.

Mark Bohan, AITC Gold Coast Principal, expressed his pride in the achievements of his students, saying, “We are immensely proud of Cody, Jack, and Lachie for their outstanding performances at the 2023 Plumbing and Gas Industry Awards. Their success reflects the dedication and hard work of our students, and it showcases the exceptional quality of education and training provided at the Australian Industry Trade College. We couldn’t be more thrilled for them.”

Natalie Chanter, Industry Operations Manager who attended the night, emphasised the importance of acknowledging the AITC staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes, supporting students both in their industry placements and education. She said, “Our dedicated staff play a crucial role in shaping the future of these talented students. Their unwavering commitment to providing a supportive learning environment is what allows our students to excel in their chosen fields. It’s a testament to the synergy between industry and education at the AITC.” The combined efforts of Cody, Jack, and Lachie have paved the way for these young talents to shine brightly in their chosen careers, making them great examples of what can be achieved through a commitment to education and industry excellence.

Minister empowers future energy leaders at the AITC The AITC Brisbane school had the privilege of hosting Queensland’s Minister for Energy, Renewables, Hydrogen, Public Works, and Procurement, Mick de Brenni. His visit left our Energy Academy students inspired about the future of the energy industry.

Minister de Brenni delivered a compelling message, “You made the right choice coming to this school, as you’ll be equipped with the skills for the workforce of the future.” During his presentation, he highlighted: Queensland’s global leadership in renewable energy Queensland is a global leader in implementing renewable energy sources, setting the standard for sustainability worldwide.

The SuperGrid: Queensland’s energy revolution The SuperGrid, a groundbreaking project, is set to transform Queensland’s energy infrastructure, creating thousands of job opportunities in the energy sector.

Lucrative and impactful careers Energy sector jobs offer competitive pay, prioritising safety and allowing employees to make a significant difference in sustainability.

Our Energy Academy provides specialised education for students passionate about the electrical and energy industry, offering diverse opportunities for their bright futures. Minister de Brenni’s visit left a lasting impact on our students, inspiring them to become future leaders in Queensland’s energy sector.

BACK FROM THE FUTURE Personal Industry Coach, Mark Bradshaw led a unique idea for Project Based Learning (PBL) at the Brisbane school called ‘Back from the Future’. Year 10 Rookies worked in pairs to design an immense working model rail network with 15 connected stations from the 1930s into the future. Each station, or module, was based on a particular time in history, or fantasy — such as the futuristic station set in 2042.

The holistic nature of the train PBL project enables students to integrate knowledge from various subjects such as English, History, Design & Technology and Science, and allows more hands-on experience with tools. Mark says many educational boxes were ticked. “With English each module was set around a particular time period and students set a story around that time — a presentation also had to be given.”

Students also needed to research and understand power transfer.

“They’ve had to wire up and use basic hand tools to complete a full circuit. They’ve had to create a positive and negative circuit for the rail system,” explains Mark. “They also designed a light circuit with a resistor, which qualified for some of the science assessments.”

The modules had to be specially designed so the power from one module could be transferred to the next module. “Not only did students have to work in pairs on their own module, but they had to talk to the people either side of them and see what they were doing.”

Everything needed to connect properly and line up so the train would run around the track the size of a large room.

Students spent many hours working on their modules with intricate pieces, trying to model significant places in history, or life-changing moments. One station was modelled on the earliest train station from the 1930s, other models included the Cross River Rail Project, Brisbane Parklands, the Brisbane floods in 2011, and one station was modelled around the Twin Towers in New York.

During the PBL, students developed their communication skills. Year 10 students were also introduced to electrical circuits and different types of tools used every day in industry. “There was also discussion and preparation about the safety information. The project was really satisfying for an educator to watch students become engaged and excited about their modules.”

Mark says he’s really happy with skills learnt in ‘Back from the Future’. “Our Year 10s needed to get tools in their hands. Each one of them, whether they were really excited about the project, or just had kind of an interest, got to hold tools in their hands and each one of them had to work with electrical theory.”

“The best part is how this project locked into the AITC values of mateship - students needed to help each other.”

The AITC adopts PBL projects as it offers numerous benefits for students preparing for careers in specific industries.

By immersing students in hands-on, collaborative projects, PBL provides a unique opportunity for real-world application of knowledge. This approach cultivates essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork and aligns seamlessly with the AITC’s industry-driven program.

This interdisciplinary approach prepares students for the demands of their future careers. The assessment in PBL aligns with the needs of QCE, and based on the quality of the final project, ensures students can apply their skills and knowledge in practical, industry-relevant scenarios.

The AITC x Protech Academy transforms lives and builds futures Mitchell, a student at the AITC Brisbane School, vividly recalls the moment he discovered an alternative path to education. Seeking a more personalised school, his family found the AITC through social media and booked for the open day. This event sealed the deal for Mitchell, who knew the AITC was where he was meant to be.

“Being at my old school felt like being an ant in a massive colony of 2,000 people. It wasn’t what I wanted. I needed something more meaningful, something I could build a future with,” Mitchell explained.

His journey at the AITC began as a mid-year Rookie in Year 10 at the Brisbane school, and since then, he hasn’t looked back. The AITC x Protech Academy, a specialist academy, caught Mitchell’s attention with its motto: “It’s a specialised school academy with a big plan.” For Mitchell, having a future with big plans was crucial, and the academy delivered just that.

Working within the academy “is a methodical and meaningful process, and once

you land your wheels on the runway, you will take off. I’m taking off, and I’m going to fly high,” he said.

Mitch’s career journey took an exciting trajectory when he was signed-up into a school-based apprenticeship in January 2023 at the beginning of Year 11. This was part of 17 x academy students being signedup in a single day, attracting overwhelming interest including TV news coverage.

Mitchell’s family, witnessing his remarkable transformation, couldn’t be prouder.

For his school-based apprenticeship Mitchell is learning about heavy machinery for the mining industry. Currently he’s working towards his Cert III in mobile plant technology. His interest in the field developed while working with his uncle, a mechanic.

Mitchell’s fortunate realisation of his career path during work experience set the stage for a remarkable transformation.

Reflecting on his experience, Mitchell said, “I am learning everything about being a heavydiesel mechanic, working on 120-tonne

going to waste this opportunity,” Mitchell explained.

Graduating with Year 12 QCE is an important part of the process. “It’s crucial to finish school for the apprenticeship, and I’m glad I made the switch to the AITC. In just six months, my life turned around completely,” Mitchell shared.

His passion for financial management stems from a desire to change “struggle into success”. Seeking guidance from mentors and financial experts, Mitchell is committed to learning and growing in the field.

Balancing education and industry experience using AITC’s unique program, Mitch spends seven weeks working and then returns to school for education. He emphasised the connection between what is learnt in the classroom at the AITC and its practical application in industry, including learning about tax and income management.

With his eye on the future, Mitchell has already set up a financial plan, and has goals to own property within the year. “I’m looking at my goals, including building a financial portfolio,” he said.

“I’ve created accounts to manage my money.

I’m starting young, investing in stocks and building towards owning my house. I’m not

After graduating in Year 12 (2024) Mitch will own property, won’t have a HECS debt, and will have a full-time job. With a job in Mt Isa, in a fly-in fly-out capacity for the duration of his apprenticeship, Mitch will then head to Western Australia, with an eye on exploring career opportunities in Egypt.

As Mitchell continues to soar towards his goals, he envisions writing a book about his experiences including financial guidance. His advice to others is simple but profound: “Live below your standards and be wise with your money. Investments like owning a home are goals worth working towards. Change your mindset, and you’ll go further than you think.”

Giving Math a different flavour THE SPICE OF INNOVATION

Education is all about creativity and innovation, about taking ordinary subjects and turning them into captivating and different experiences that resonate with students. Vashti Anderson, a dedicated teacher at the Australian Industry Trade College on the Sunshine Coast, has taken this principle to heart, crafting a remarkable journey that started with a math lesson and culminated in the creation of two unique hot sauce flavours, all for a philanthropic cause.

It all began as a simple math lesson, where Year 11 students engaged in a project that aimed to teach practical application of mathematical concepts. Little did they know this would soon evolve into a story of collaboration, ingenuity, and culinary excellence.

Vashti partnered with The Village Pickle, a local artisanal food company known for their dedication to crafting unique and flavourful products. Brandon Chan, from The Village Pickle came in to talk to Year 11 about his business. The students clicked with Brandon and his business which N

turned into a bigger project opportunity.

This collaboration brought together the passion of young minds and the expertise of culinary artisans, resulting in a hot sauce that combined the exciting elements of pomegranate, cherry, lime, and habanero chili for one bottle, and for the other — mandarin, tamarind, lime, ginger and birdseye chilli.

Seeking to ignite her students’ passion for learning, Vashti encouraged them to delve into real-world scenarios. She challenged them to design and produce a product, guiding them through the intricacies of budgeting, measurements, and calculations. What started as a mathematical exercise soon became a journey of discovery, as students brainstormed ideas for their creation. This simple yet bold concept tied into their mathematical learnings and also provided an opportunity for cross-disciplinary exploration. Vashti’s encouragement and guidance were instrumental in empowering young people to take a truly different pathway.

What sets this project apart is its dual purpose. The two hot sauces have been given the names of Cherry Bomb and Citrus Tang. These products represent the students’ creativity and hard work and also serves as a philanthropic cause. The hot sauce was auctioned off, with funds raised directed towards New Hope Cambodia, as part of the AITC International Service Project. “This initiative showcases the incredible potential of education to create positive change beyond the classroom walls,” says Vashti.

The journey from math lesson to hot sauce creation is a testament to the power of collaborative learning and hands-on experiences. Vashti’s innovative approach not only instilled mathematical knowledge but also cultivated skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and project management.

The students involved have gained a deeper understanding of how theoretical concepts translate into practical applications, and the hot sauce itself stands as a tangible symbol of their accomplishment.

This story of sums to hot sauce serves as an inspiration to educators worldwide. It reminds us that education is not confined to textbooks and exams; it’s about fostering a love for learning, nurturing creativity, and making a positive impact on the world.

Through initiatives like the creation of these two hot sauces, teachers like Vashti remind us that the possibilities are endless when it comes to turning education into a force for good.

THE EQUINE ACADEMY SCALES ACROSS SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND After the successful launch of the Equine Academy on the Gold Coast, in partnership with the Gold Coast Turf Club, the Australian Industry Trade College (AITC) has scaled its offering to five schools allowing students to delve into the world of the thriving equine industry.

The Equine Academy Open Days have become instrumental in showcasing the advantages awaiting students at the AITC. Expert industry panel members, alongside dedicated students and enthusiastic staff, lead engaging discussions, spotlighting the extensive benefits of enrolling in these unique academies, with Tier-1 racecourses as the backdrop.

The focus extends beyond merely acquiring knowledge; it's about preparing students for success in various facets of the equine industry, be it equine training, farrier work, track maintenance, or event management.

Complementing the informative sessions, the AITC offers families an exclusive opportunity to explore the inner workings of the local turf club through organised tours.

Visits to prominent equine facilities such as the Ipswich Turf Club, Doomben Racecourse, the Toowoomba Turf Club, and the Sunshine Coast Turf Club provide first-hand experiences of the dynamic environment in which AITC students can immerse themselves.

Setting Sail for Success The AITC Boating Industry Academy Information Session, held at the Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard offered a unique insight into the possibilities awaiting those in Senior School who want to set sail on a path to success.

Prospective families gathered to learn about the exciting opportunities offered by the AITC Boating Industry Academy and how it can shape a high school student’s future in ways they never imagined.

The event brought together industry experts, educators, and parents to shed light on a program that goes beyond traditional education.

Andrew Fielding, President of the Boating Industry Association, set

the tone for the evening, emphasising the incredible opportunities available within the world of boating and marine industries.

He stated, “The AITC Boating Academy offers young people the chance to embark on a journey toward a thrilling and rewarding future. The boating industry is a dynamic sector, with diverse career paths and boundless potential for personal and professional growth.”

Mark Bohan, AITC Gold Coast Principal, shared his insights on the Academy’s unique approach to education and its integration with the boating industry.

Mark explained, “Our goal is to bridge the gap between education and industry, preparing students for careers that offer real-world experience and promising futures.”

The session also featured Jenny Vanderheld, an AITC parent and passionate advocate. She shared her experiences as the parent of a Year 10 student currently enrolled in the Boating Academy, underlining the transformation she has witnessed in her son since he embarked on this educational journey.

Brodie has WorldSkills The stage was set for an extraordinary showcase of skill, talent, and innovation at the WorldSkills competition in Melbourne this year. Among the bright contingent of young Australian representatives, one individual stood out as an embodiment of dedication and promise: Brodie, who proudly represented the Australian Industry Trade College (AITC) as a crucial member of the Queensland team.

Brodie says, “It felt great to be chosen, I was happy to get out there and push myself.

During the competition I was in the zone and focused on what I needed to do.”

Young apprentices and students from across Queensland were selected to represent their state at the WorldSkills National Championships, putting their trade skills to the test against the best and brightest Australia had to offer in their trade.

Brodie’s journey to the WorldSkills competition is a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence and passion for his craft. Hailing from the picturesque Sunshine Coast region, Brodie’s path was marked by his enrolment at the AITC, a hub renowned for nurturing future industry leaders. With a steadfast determination to make his mark, Brodie chose to specialise in engineering.

As part of the Queensland team, Brodie’s skills and talents were honed through countless hours of training and practice. The competition demands technical prowess and the ability to remain composed under pressure. Brodie’s ability to thrive in highstakes scenarios was recognised by his teachers and his employer, All Terrain Warriors, where Brodie has been employed as a school-based apprentice since 2022 in a Cert III (automotive manufacturing technical operations - bus, truck and trailer).

Brodie symbolises a young workforce poised to drive innovation and growth, showcasing the importance of trade skills in a rapidly evolving world. His participation in the WorldSkills competition underscores the significance of vocational education and the opportunities it presents for the next generation.

The WorldSkills National Championships are the biggest trades and skills competition in the country, with more than 60 skills spanning 50 trades on display across three days of competition.

Competitors travelled to the National Championships from all over Queensland and across many trades, from hairdressing to sheet metal work, cyber security to healthcare services, and bricklaying to baking.

AITC STUDENT AND VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER PART OF

Yellow Ribbon Day was held on 12 September and marks special significance where we remember and honour 28,000+ Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) members who defend 93% of Queensland.

On this day Queenslanders are encouraged to wear a yellow ribbon to support our dedicated Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers, officers and staff who serve Queensland communities.

Carlin, student at the Australian Industry Trade College on the Sunshine Coast, and dedicated rural firefighter, had the unique opportunity to be part of the event at Brisbane’s Parliament House.

Carlin has been a rural firefighter at Ilkley and districts for just over 12 months. His involvement in this event left him feeling immensely proud and deeply connected to the spirit of resilience that defines Queensland communities.

“To be part of Yellow Ribbon Day meant a great deal to me. I represented rural firefighters around Queensland in our parliament. It was a great opportunity to give our leadership insight into what we do and why we do it,” said Carlin.

During the Yellow Ribbon presentation, it was announced that a $1M Innovation Fund will be established for the Rural Fire Service (RFS) by the State Government.

Carlin believes the RFS Innovation Fund “is a good starting point for the RFS to become better equipped to be able to fight fires and to save lives.”

Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, Mark Ryan said, “The announcement of an RFS Innovation Fund will support future operations and is a welcome announcement for Yellow Ribbon Day.” “Ensuring our Rural Fire Brigades have access to the best equipment available is a priority,” he said.

“This innovation fund will enable new solutions and technologies to be tested for operational effectiveness, in consultation with volunteers on the front line.

QFES Commissioner Greg Leach said, “Rural fire brigades do so much more than just fight grassfires and bushfires. They are on the ground with their communities, providing vital education and support for people to be prepared for bushfire season.”

“We are anticipating increased fire activity this bushfire season and once again our dedicated RFS volunteers will be called upon to protect lives and property when fire strikes.

We are proud of AITC student Carlin who shines in and outside the classroom.

“Carlin is an exemplary student, known for his dedication to his studies and his unwavering commitment to serving his community as a volunteer firefighter. AUSTRALIAN YOUTH BUILDING HOPE IN CAMBODIA

Empowering the future AITC students from all six schools have showcased the incredible potential of youth as a driving force for positive change during a transformative journey to Cambodia.

The AITC undertook a life-altering mission as part of the International Service Project (ISP) for New Hope Cambodia. The aim was to create change and opportunity for the critically poor families of Siem Reap, Cambodia through the technical talents, values and generosity of the AITC community.

This year marked a significant milestone as it was the first opportunity for the AITC to return to Cambodia since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thirty-one young people, with over a dozen AITC staff, industry partners/sponsors travelled to Cambodia in two teams with a commitment to making a lasting impact on the lives of those in need.

Both teams embarked on a mission to construct one home each for a Cambodian family (chosen by New Hope) as well as helping with renovation works at the New Hope School. These works included working on boarding rooms for hospitality trainees.

Jack an AITC Brisbane student from Team 1 said when they arrived to build the house, “we walked up to a concrete slab. There were no frames but all the supplies were in a shed nearby so we could get to work. We moved the A-frames into place and that was challenging.

We worked together; the local builders, people from New Hope, the AITC group, industry partners, and Emu Gully staff. It took all of us.”

“I felt proud when the house started to take shape, because I’m building something that is going to stay in the family for generations,” said Jack.

In addition to building the family’s new residence, AITC students rolled up their sleeves and dedicated themselves to various tasks around the New Hope School grounds, leaving behind a legacy within the community.

Dave Breeze, AITC’s Industry Operations Manager for Ipswich, provided support and guidance to the team, and praised their efforts, saying, “Our students worked diligently in Cambodia and have also showcased the incredible values of the AITC.” Following several days of hard work, each AITC team had the privilege of participating in a Cambodian blessing ceremony, a cherished cultural tradition aimed at dispelling negative energies and ushering in happiness and positivity, as well as the handover ceremony.

“The handover ceremony made me feel proud,” said Jack. “We were part of the process of building a house. It was sad as well, the eldest daughter

gave a speech, she was crying and a lot of people were emotional.”

The grandmother of the recipient family from the Team 2 house was overcome with gratitude and joy. Tears streamed down her face as she expressed how her dream had finally come true.

Nick Harrison, AITC Sunshine Coast Principal, said, “It was an incredible day for our team. The grandmother was incredibly grateful, describing the house as her ‘dream house.’ She said she could never have imagined living in such a beautiful home. We are so proud of our young people, who have achieved so much for this amazing family. Our students worked tirelessly.”

In the spirit of cultural exchange and camaraderie, the Cambodian hosts presented the team with intricate friendship bracelets. These bracelets symbolise the enduring bonds of friendship and the shared experiences that transcend borders and languages.

“Our students demonstrated their skills and determination and illustrated the power of unity, empathy, and compassion,” Nick Harrison said.

Each young person fundraised for their ticket and expenses to Cambodia through aTryBooking page and sent out messages of help using video and email. Their employers, friends, and families all helped in this incredible effort.

Each AITC school held activities such as onsite BBQ’s, trivia nights, Bunnings Sausage Sizzles and created products to sell such as the hot sauce developed by The Village Pickle.

All Vocational Educational Training projects on all schools also donated their profits, which included auctions and car washing.

I found out about the AITC from a fellow student I used to go to school with — from my old school. He switched to the AITC and told me all about it. I decided that mainstream school wasn’t for me because I wasn’t planning on going to university and I wanted to get a trade. It was definitely the right choice and I haven’t looked back.

I was signed-up in Year 11 with KC Mechanical— a small mechanics business in Toowoomba. Being signed-up was a big step for me, because I’d been trying to get apprenticeships and then getting this offer was a first step in my career of going towards something, instead of just having a casual job.

Sometimes securing an apprenticeship doesn’t go smoothly and you need perseverance. I had an offer that fell through and it was a crushing blow because I really wanted that job. However, I knew I wanted to do mechanics so I continued to do more work experience to find another job. After finding my apprenticeship with KC, the next step is graduating Year 12 in 2023. After graduating I will walk into full-time job as a second-year apprentice with no HECS debt.

Getting your Year 12 QCE is extremely important. I was going to drop out in Year 10 at mainstream school. While at the AITC I understood that finishing my Year 12 was important. I’m glad I accomplished finishing my high school certificate and now that I have that, it’s the best feeling and it makes getting jobs easier.

It’s important to try everything at the AITC. When I first came here I wanted to do something in electrical or plumbing and then I did work experience and TAFE. Then I knew that wasn’t what I wanted to do. I did mechanical and I found that’s what I really wanted as a career. It helps you if you keep your options open, you can find your career path.

Don’t get discouraged. Try out new workplaces and keep options open. If you don’t get that apprenticeship offer, it’s not the end of the world. It’s a great learning curve to build your resilience and then bounce back, and then the right workplace will come around.

Definitely keep your options open. You have to find what you want, where your ground is, where you want to be. You may not find the perfect workplace straight away. It’s more just trying places and, finding if that workplace where you do experience is the fit for you. Work experience is invaluable. You learn how to deal with tough situations and you learn what you really want in your workplace.

I’m in Year 11 now and I started at the AITC in Year 10 — I’ve been with the school since the beginning. I was recently signed-up into my hospitality traineeship with Banette Bayside, a French bakery. Through my journey at the AITC I was able to try many different trades and test them through TAFE trade tasters. I found that hospitality would be best for me. I like seeing a smile on somebody’s face after I put effort into something.

A friend recommended the AITC to me because I wasn’t into regular school. I thought the education/industry program offered at the AITC would be better. I could go to school, get a head-start in my career, and earn money at the same time. Earning and learning is very rewarding because you get to treat yourself at the end of the week, but you still get to work towards your Year 12 QCE. Getting your QCE is the most important step and the AITC really outlines the differences between being in the workforce without your QCE and with your QCE. Getting your Year 12 QCE will show employers that you’ve made the effort to finish something, as well as wanting to take on other things at the same time.

Words of wisdom Try every single trade taster. You get a lot of opportunities at the AITC and you need to seize every single one of them.

This will allow you to try everything you want to try and come to a conclusion of what you really want in a career.

Persistence is how you overcome challenges. If something doesn’t work the first time, you take a step back, you have a look at it, and then you try something new.

TIPS WHEN MAKING CALLS FOR WORK EXPERIENCE Write your pointers, write an introduction, say what school you’re from, and tell them that you’re looking for work experience. If they say no, remind them to keep your number, and if they are looking for someone to do work experience, to keep you in mind. Sound as confident as you can, because it sounds like you know what you’re talking about and people love confidence.

My tip for when you get work experience is to watch intently and give everything a go. They think you can do it or they wouldn’t have given you the chance in the first place.

Tim Kelly, Director of MEFSC, remarked, “This event exemplifies the power of partnerships and the transformative impact they can have on manufacturing.”

The evening showcased the exceptional collaboration between the AITC, Bella Manufacturing, and Eniquest, drawing industry leaders, businesses, and the community together for a night of hands-on learning.

A highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the Domino’s food truck (one of only nine in the world), which is a stunning display of craftsmanship built by Bella Manufacturing.

The event also offered attendees a look at the latest tools Bosch has on offer and an exclusive tour of the AITC’s school facilities.

KEEPING THE WHEELS OF INDUSTRY TURNING IN TOOWOOMBA The AITC is shaping the next generation thanks to its industry-driven education and valuable partnerships with local businesses such as Western Truck Group (WTG), which provides AITC students with invaluable opportunities.

Two remarkable and hardworking students, Caleb and Katelyn, are shining examples of students who have found their purpose and passion at the AITC. Caleb, a Year 12 student at the AITC, has embarked on a journey in the world of heavy commercial vehicle mechanical technology through a school-based apprenticeship.

“The AITC allows me to complete senior school while gaining hands-on experience,” Caleb says.

“I go out to work for half of the term and attend high school at the AITC for the other half.

“It means I can undertake an apprenticeship while completing my Queensland Certificate of Education.”

Caleb’s choice to follow his passion for heavy commercial vehicles not only speaks to his dedication but also highlights the diverse range of opportunities available to students at the AITC. Katelyn, a Year 11 student, is another shining star at the Toowoomba school. She is pursuing a school-based apprenticeship in automotive electrical technology.

“I was always drawn to the trucking industry, especially with my dad being a truck driver,” she says.

The success of Caleb and Katelyn is just the beginning of what AITC Toowoomba students can achieve when given the right opportunities and mentoring.

In the case of the Ipswich East OSHC playground project, it showcases the power of collaboration and creativity in transforming a space into a vibrant haven for children to learn, play, and grow.

The AITC Gift of Giving Project has many advantages by giving students an insight into what is expected of them when going out to work experience and hands-on experience with tools.

Melanie Hanson, coordinator of Ipswich East Primary School OSHC, has been a witness to the incredible transformation brought about by the AITC Ipswich students.

She expressed her gratitude by saying, “It’s honestly breathtaking! The Gift of Giving Project has not only provided our children with an amazing playground but has also shown them the value of community, kindness, and the spirit of giving.”

Melanie’s words resonate with the larger message behind this initiative: the impact of small actions can radiate far beyond their immediate scope.

“This project serves as a reminder that when young individuals come together with a shared purpose, they can create something truly extraordinary.”

The playground project came about from a partnership between the AITC and the Ipswich East Primary OSHC. Melanie Hanson, OSHC Coordinator, has employed several young people from the AITC Ipswich school in school-based apprenticeships and reached out to the AITC for help regarding the play area.

“We are a not-for-profit service. Unfortunately, we are unable to have extra funds so I reached out as a community connection to the AITC to come and use our play area as a blank canvas — so the AITC young people had an incredible opportunity to build something unique.”

To tie this in with work experience expectations Melanie was a client for the AITC students, “I gave them a brief of how we wanted the space to look. The OSHC children were also part of it, their voice was involved, they put forward what they would like.

The AITC young people went away, worked in groups, and drew up several plans.

Melanie visited the AITC Ipswich school and students presented their ideas to me one afternoon which was super exciting.

“Their ideas were approved by Queensland Education because OSHC is on the school’s grounds.”

Driven by their passion for giving back to the community and a desire to create a positive impact, the AITC Ipswich students embarked on a journey that would see a playground area transformed into a haven of joy and imagination.

Carla McCarthy, AITC Ipswich Principal, shared that “the students’ vision extended beyond a mere playground refurbishment; they aimed to create a space that would nurture children’s creativity and physical activity”.

“The students have set a shining example, demonstrating that through acts of kindness, we can collectively give back to our community,” Carla added.

Lexus Melbourne Cup visits AITC Robina school on Father’s Day On Father’s Day, we had a truly unforgettable experience as we welcomed the Lexus Melbourne Cup; the AITC being one of the 41 destinations during the Australasian tour.

The day was filled with excitement, inspiration, and, of course, the undeniable beauty of the equine world.

Keeper of the Cup, Joe McGrath from Victoria Racing Club proudly presented the coveted trophy, which he explained is worth a whopping $600,000 and took 250 hours to create using 1.65kg of 18 carat gold, mined in Orange, New South Wales.

We heard from one of our Equine Academy students, Asha, who had the privilege of sharing her incredible journey and passion for horses, and her career goals of becoming a Jockey (and who knows, maybe winning a Melbourne Cup or two along the way!). We also heard from Wendy Green, Melbourne Cup winning owner and part-time schoolteacher, who’s horse, Rogan Josh, won the Cup in 1999. An incredible story from a passionate woman.

We were honoured to have the Lexus Melbourne Cup grace our school, reminding us of the rich history and thrilling moments this iconic event has brought to Australia. Thank you to all who joined us on this special occasion, and a big shoutout to Ash for her outstanding contribution. Here’s to a future filled with more remarkable moments and equine excellence.

The Cup had a busy schedule with its final destination at Flemington Racecourse on November 7th.

Kudos to Ryan for securing a school-based apprenticeship in Cert III engineering with Steel Works Construction. Following a successful work experience, the team recognised Ryan’s immense potential. Jason praised Ryan’s reliability and hard work, foreseeing his valuable contribution to the team. Congratulations once again to Ryan for a well-deserved achievement.
