In 2020 we invite you to step through the frame with us and experience the masterworks of the eighteenth century musical world. From Haydn’s Emperor Quartet to Bach’s Goldberg Variations to Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony and Mozart’s Jenamy (Jeunehomme) concerto for keyboard, our audiences will have the chance to explore some of the most glorious vistas of the musical landscape and become intimate with AHE’s portraits of the great geniuses of Haydn’s world. THE AUSTRALIAN HAYDN ENSEMBLE
The Australian Haydn Ensemble (AHE) enters its eighth year as a leading Australian period instrument group, playing to the highest standards. Under the leadership of Artistic Director, Skye McIntosh and comprising a group of dedicated and historically informed musicians with national and international experience, AHE has gained a reputation for its imaginative programming and vibrant performances, as well as for its popular educational programs. This world class ensemble has performed at musical festivals, tours regularly throughout regional NSW, and presents its highly successful subscription series in Sydney, Canberra and various regional centres. In 2020 the Ensemble will present five subscription series as well as other NSW concerts and also embark on its first European tour.
PAINTING MUSICAL PORTRAITS
A painting holds a moment in time: a glimpse of a culture, aesthetic, and human experience of the past. The musicians of AHE step back through the frame of time to bring the music of the past to life today. They explore the eighteenth century, its history, ideas, philosophies, aesthetics, musical tastes and customs. They bring to life the historical figures of Haydn’s lifetime, exploring their inspirations, examining their scores and letters, and performing on instruments of the period. Each of our 2020 programs paints a beautiful portrait performed by some of the best instrumentalists and soloists from Australia and overseas.

VIVALDI'S GARDEN A BEAUTIFUL BAROQUE VOICE French soprano, Stéphanie Varnerin joins the Ensemble from Europe in a stunning Italian baroque program of sacred, secular and instrumental music by Vivaldi, Stradella and Cesarini.

Stéphanie Varnerin’s world premiere recording of cantatas by Cesarini has attracted considerable attention. Her stunning voice has garnered many awards including First prize in the 2014 International Baroque Singing Competition of Froville, First prize for Excellence at the Concours International de chant Léopold Bellan (Paris) and the 2010 Orphée from the Academy of Lyrical Recording. This program features sublime music for solo soprano and strings including two dramatic Vivaldi works - In Furore and Vos aurae per montes. In Furore is a virtuosic work for soprano and is complimented by dramatic writing for strings and continuo. The cantata Vos aurae per montes beautifully depicts the wafting breezes reminiscent of his ‘Spring’ concerto from the Four Seasons in an incredibly virtuosic work testing the skills of the soloist to the full. This is beautifully contrasted by Stradella’s gorgeous aria ‘Queste lagrime e sospire’ - from his Oratorio San Giovanni Battista. A true gem of the baroque era! The program also includes a cantata from lesser-known Italian baroque composer Cesarini, La Gelosia. AHE will weave stunning instrumental works throughout the program to create a magical Italian baroque garden of delights.

TWO MASTERWORKS IN CHAMBER VERSION
BEETHOVEN’S PASTORAL
The Australian Haydn Ensemble is well known for its unearthing of forgotten composers and rediscovery of unknown historical chamber versions of the classics. In this program it brings to light two of the greats: Beethoven’s Pastoral and Mozart’s Haffner Serenade along with a melancholic and moving string sextet by Boccherini. Beethoven often criticised chamber versions of his own works by other composers. The eighteenth century arrangement of Beethoven’s masterwork, the Pastoral, presented in this program, however, is a vibrant and passionate reinterpretation of this dramatic work that will capture your imagination and reinvent it for you as a septet.

Mozart’s Haffner Serenade is perhaps one of his most frequently performed works. This chamber version, arranged by eighteenth century Italian composer Girolamo Masi is possibly unknown. AHE also performs a beautiful, dark and moving string sextet in F minor by Luigi Boccherini. Boccherini takes the listener on a journey full of drama, melancholy and dance - a characteristic of his music that makes it a listening pleasure.

The subject of dreams has long occupied the imagination of composers, poets and artists throughout history. AHE explores this subject with an intriguing collection of works including Haydn’s Dream Quartet, Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Beethoven’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s Tomb Scene from Romeo and Juliet. Haydn’s beautiful string quartet Op. 50 No. 5, The Dream, takes its nickname from the undulating chords accompanying a rhapsodic violin line and the dissonances providing a lulling effect in its serene ‘poco adagio’ second movement. Bach's famous Goldberg Variations, written at the request of Count Kaiserling for Goldberg to play to him during his many sleepless nights to lull him into a state of slumber, are some of his most listened-to works. The original variations were written for harpsichord. In this concert, AHE presents a newly commissioned arrangement for string quartet. AHE also presents Beethoven’s magnificent string quartet Op. 18 No. 1. The slow movement of this work is thought to have been inspired by the tragic Tomb Scene of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, where Romeo, finding Juliet asleep, believes her to be dead and thus takes his own life in vain.

ERIN HELYARD DIRECTS A PROGRAM OF PLANETARY POWER AND BOHEMIAN INFLUENCE
MOZART & MERCURY Helpmann award-winning musical director, historical expert and keyboardist, Dr Erin Helyard, directs a powerful orchestral program full of Bohemian and Viennese flare including Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9 Jenamy and Haydn’s Mercury Symphony. Erin Helyard has been acclaimed as an inspiring conductor, as well as a virtuosic and expressive performer on the harpsichord and fortepiano. He features in this program as soloist and guest director performing Mozart's wonderful Piano Concerto No. 9 in E flat major Jenamy (often mistakenly referred to as Jeunehomme). This concerto has the youthful glow of early Mozart and is one of his most famous. The program opens with a youthful work of Haydn. His Symphony No. 4 was written just prior to taking up his long-term position as Kappellmeister to the Esterhazy's. This work is in contrast to a dramatic symphony in G minor by the lesser-known Bohemian composer Vanhal. The Ensemble also performs Haydn’s Symphony No. 43 Mercury. Although it is not known how it came to have this nickname, the work has plenty of dramatic power full of planetary overtones in what promises to be a wonderful finish to the year.

MOZART HORN QUINTET THE ENSEMBLE RETURNS TO THE SYDNEY MOZART SOCIETY IN 2020 AND TOURS TO REGIONAL NSW Virtuoso Australian horn player Carla Blackwood has recently returned to her homeland after ten years performing in Europe. The Ensemble is delighted to welcome her back to perform Mozart’s much-loved Horn Quintet alongside his string quartet The Hunt and Haydn’s The Fifths. Mozart completed his delightful Horn Quintet in 1782 for the horn player Ignaz Joseph Leutgeb, an old friend of the family from Salzburg. Throughout, the horn is called upon to match the agility and range of the string instruments, so much so that Alfred Einstein has described the Andante as "a little love duet between horn and violin". The fast outer movements are touched by some of the same humour that characterised the friendship between Mozart and Leutgeb. The program also features Mozart’s string quartet, The Hunt, the fourth quartet in the set which he dedicated to the great master ‘Papa’ Haydn. The work takes its nickname from the jaunty motifs in the first movement that sound much like a hunting horn. Haydn’s string quartet, Op. 76 No. 2, The Fifths, captures a perfect picture of the genius. This dramatic work opens with a serious yet exploratory play on the interval of a fifth, which gives this work its name. Also featured in this concert is a delightful Romance for horn and string quartet attributed to Joseph Haydn’s younger brother, Michael Haydn that is originally the slow movement of Mozart’s horn concerto.
