Welcome to The Australian Haydn Ensemble’s 2014 season. As chair of the board of the AHE, I am very excited by the amazing success they have so far achieved in such a short time, and even more excited by what they have in store for you in 2014. Barely a year old, they delighted audiences in 2013 with a season of virtually sold out concerts in the Sydney Opera House’s Utzon Room and Canberra, buildng a sense of anticipation for what this young and vibrant group will acheive in 2014 and beyond. An AHE concert is a unique and intimate experience and I encourage you all to come and enjoy their fabulous concerts this year.
Dr Timothy Pascoe AM Chair, Australian Haydn Ensemble The Australian Haydn Ensemble is a classical period instrument ensemble specialising in the period performance of repertoire from the Classical and early Romantic periods. They present concerts in intimate spaces allowing listeners to experience the kind of intimacy that might have been enjoyed by audience members in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A particular focus of the ensemble is the exploration of rarely performed historical chamber versions of symphonic works by composers such as Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.

AN UP CLOSE APPROACH... Getting up close to the music and musicians in an intimate concert setting is a wonderful way to experience the magic of period instrument performance, particularly chamber music. It is also a wonderful way to hear orchestral works you know and love in a new way, performed as chamber versions made by composers from the 18th century. Listening to the Australian Haydn Ensemble one can really hear the unique sound of the bow on gut strings, as well as the beautiful and subtle wooded tones that the traverso flute adds to the sound, enhancing the colour and clarity of the music. In 2014 we present four sensational programs of music from Haydn, Mozart, CPE Bach, Beethoven, Boccherini, Wranitzky and more, all performed on original instruments in spaces where you, the audience, can get up-close to the music and musicians and experience the sense of intimacy that our concerts provide. Joined by a host of wonderful guest artists from both Australia and overseas including Marc DestrubĂŠ (Canada), Catherine Mackintosh (UK) and Erin Helyard (NZ), this year the Australian Haydn Ensemble is not to be missed!

A NEW PARTNERSHIP ENSEMBLE IN RESIDENCE
In 2014 we begin a wonderful new relationship with the Australian National University in Canberra as Ensemble in Residence. We are extremely excited about presenting our Canberra concerts in association with the ANU school of Music in 2014. Four concerts this year will take place on campus in the Larry Sitzky Hall and the Drill Hall Gallery. We are also excited to be working with students in masterclasses and workshops throughout the year. Students will have the opportunity to work with members of the AHE and guest artists as well as attend open rehearsals.

BARITONE DAVID GRECO FEATURES AS SOLOIST ALONG WITH MELISSA FARROW IN ABEL’S FLUTE CONCERTO IN G MAJOR The Australian Haydn Ensemble launches their 2014 season with a program of trademark intimacy, featuring a symphonic work arranged for chamber forces. This practice, common in the late 18th century but rarely heard today, facilitates enjoyment of these magnificent works in smaller spaces beyond the larger concert halls. Johann Salomon's chamber arrangement of Haydn's famous Surprise Symphony for flute, string quintet and obbligato keyboard will be heard alongside sparkling sinfonias for strings from late 18th century London . The outstanding young Australian baritone David Greco, a recent soloist with Pinchgut Opera, performs arias by J.C. Bach as well as an Australian Premiere of a beautiful early classical cantata by English composer John Stanley. Melissa Farrow, one of our core ensemble members and principal flautist of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, returns as soloist with Abel's flute concerto in G Major.

SPECIAL GUESTS AMY POWER, OBOE, DARRYL POULSEN AND CARLA BLACKWOOD, NATURAL HORNS, IN A PROGRAM OF HAYDN, MOZART & BOCCHERINI Mozart, fondly known as the jolliest of the classical composers, certainly lives up to this reputation in his 1787 composition ‘Ein musikalischer Spaß'; The Musical Joke. This work is a parody on classical traditions and the 'average' composers of the day, written for two horns and strings. The ensemble is joined by two of Australia’s finest natural horn players, Darryl Poulsen and Carla Blackwood, for this performance. Special guest Amy Power also joins the ensemble on classical period oboe for a chamber version of Haydn’s unusual concerto originally written for two rowdy Lira Organizzata, or street organs. This version uses solo oboe and flute instead of Lira Organizzata, and Melissa Farrow on flute will combine with Amy to recreate this rustic effect. The program also features an Australian premiere of a fascinating chamber expansion of Haydn’s string quartet Op.71 No.2, completed by his good friend Paul Wranitzky, one of the most underrated composers of the classical era. Unlike other composers of the time that sought to write smaller chamber versions of large works, Wranitzky does the opposite in expanding Haydn’s quartet to include two horns, flute, oboe and double bass.

Following a hugely popular performance with the ensemble in 2013 of the first piano concerto, Neal Peres Da Costa, one of the world's finest historical keyboardists, will perform a newly commissioned chamber version of Beethoven’s 2nd piano concerto by Australian composer Steven Yates. The Australian Haydn Ensemble continues its contemporary revival of the historically fashionable trend of chamber arrangements of symphonic works with a performance of Mozart's famous Symphony No.39. This arrangement, by Cimador, conveniently corresponds to Yates' instrumentation of the Beethoven, namely for flute, string quintet, double bass and obligato keyboard. The ensemble will be lead by internationally renowned concert master and soloist, Canadian violinist, Marc Destrubé. Marc's extraordinary energy and charisma will make this an unforgettable performance.
MARC DESTRUBÉ GUEST ARTIST Canadian violinist Marc Destrubé appears internationally as soloist, chamber musician, concertmaster or director/conductor, performing on both modern and historical violins. He is co-concertmaster of the Orchestra of the 18th Century (Amsterdam) and first violinist of the Axelrod String Quartet (Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC). An acclaimed teacher, he has been a visiting artist at the Paris, Utrecht and Moscow Conservatories, Banff Centre, University of Indiana, Case Western University and Oberlin College, and is co-director of Early Music Vancouver’s Baroque Instrumental Program. He has been a regular guest director and soloist with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra.

In 2013 we launched an education program working on 18th century repertoire and performance styles with students from over 34 different schools. Through popular demand our education projects are expanding in 2014. All of our core players are experienced and passionate educators and have worked in a variety of educational and charity projects. ERIN HELYARD, NEAL PERES DA COSTA, DANIEL YEADON AND CATHERINE MACKINTOSH IN A CHAMBER ORCHESTRA CELEBRATION OF CPE BACH To celebrate the 300th birthday of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach in style the ensemble welcomes back Erin Helyard to direct a program for small chamber orchestra. The group also features two new guest artists, international soloist Catherine MacKintosh as principal violin, as well as Australian Chamber Orchestra cellist, Daniel Yeadon, who will be performing CPE’s dramatic A minor cello concerto. It wouldn’t be a unique CPE Bach celebration without the inclusion of his rare and amazing double concerto for harpsichord & fortepiano, performed by Erin Helyard and Neal Peres da Costa. The program concludes with a rarely performed 1773 version of CPE's Symphony No. 22 with flutes in place of the Cor Anglais. A spectacular finale to the year that should not be missed!
CATHERINE MACKINTOSH GUEST ARTIST The English violinist, Catherine Mackintosh, was one of the first of her generation to specialise in early string-playing techniques. In 1973, she became the first concertmistress of The Academy of Ancient Music, a position she held until 1987. During her fifteen-year tenure with this orchestra she made important recordings under the direction of Christopher Hogwood. She has also performed and recorded extensively with the Purcell Quartet. She is widely regarded as one of the most experienced period instrumentalists of our time.

GUEST ARTISTS & SOLOISTS Darryl Poulsen has held pricipal horn positions in Eurpean and Australian Orchestras and performed throughout Europe, North American, South America, Asia and Australia. As a soloist, he has toured nationally with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and internationally with the Australian chamber Orchestra. He has also held the position of principal horn with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra for many years.
Australian born Amy Power studied historical oboe at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where in 2009 she graduated with a Masters studying with Walter van Hauwe and Alfredo Bernardini. Amy performs across Europe with such ensembles as I Barocchisti, Europa Galante, Accademia Bizantina, La Cetra, Le Poème Harmonique, Ensemble Cristofori, Arte dei Suonatori, and with her chamber group Satyr’s Band. With Capriccio Barockorchester and the NewDutch Academy she has also performed as a soloist to critical acclaim.
Australian horn player, Carla Blackwood is currently principal horn of the Tiroler Symphonie Orchestra Innsbruck in Austria. She has worked with renowned orchestras all over Europe and Australia including the Verbier Festival Orchestra, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Musikkollegium Winterhur, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, SWR Sinfonie Orchestra Baden Baden Freiburg, the NDR Sinfonie Orchestra Hamburg, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmoine Bremen, the Weiner Symphoniker Radio Symphony Vienna, Sinfoine Orchester Basel, Royal Swedish Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonie Orchester St Gallen, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Daniel Yeadon has a worldwide career as a cellist and viola da gamba player; his repertoire ranges from Renaissance to contemporary. He is a part-time member of the ACO, he has appeared as soloist with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, plays every year with Pinchgut Opera and records regularly for ABC Classics. For many years Daniel was a member of the renowned period instrument ensemble Florilegium and later joined the Fitzwilliam String Quartet, performing in major venues throughout the world and recording many award-winning CDs. Daniel continues to be guest principal cellist with many of the period instrument ensembles based in London, including the English Baroque Soloists and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Neal Peres Da Costa specialises in performance on historical keyboard instruments of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and is Chair of the Early Music Unit at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Neal holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Early Music from the Guildhall School of Music, a Master in Music Performance from the City University in London. In 2002 he received a PhD from the University of Leeds, where he researched performing practices in late 19th-century piano playing. Neal was cofounder of Florilegium, an internationally renowned period instrument ensemble with which he performed around the world and made many award-winning recordings. He has also performed with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Australis, Orchestra of the Antipodes, Pinchgut Opera, and the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. Praised as a virtuosic and eloquent soloist as well as an inspired and versatile conductor, Erin Helyard is at the forefront of a new generation of young musicians who combine the latest musicological and historical enquiry with a passion for promoting live music in contemporary culture. Together with violinist Anna McDonald, Erin has been an artistic director of the Sirius Ensemble. He was Principal Continuo with the Australian Chamber Orchestra from 1999 to 2003, and was assistant music director to Richard Tognetti for the 2001 Sydney Festival's production of Mozart's Mitridate. Erin is a founder and co-artistic director of the acclaimed Sydney-based Pinchgut Opera and is a central founding member of the Orchestra of the Antipodes.
David Greco has established himself as a fine interpreter of oratorio and opera in Australia and Europe. Since making his debut with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra in 2004 in works of Handel, he has come to specialise in the works of the late Italian and German Baroque masters. David has appeared as a soloist alongside Dame Emma Kirkby and many distinguished ensembles including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Opera Australia, Freiburger Barockorchester, Pinchgut Opera, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir and the Ensemble Le Nuove Musiche. He has performed as part of numerous international festivals, including Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and Glyndebourne (UK). David completed studies in opera and early music with Diane Forlano, bass Peter Kooij and counter-tenor Michael Chance at the Royal Conservatoire Den Haag, The Netherlands. He recently finished preparing the title role of Saul/Handel under Richard Egarr at the Britten-Pears Aldeburgh Young Artist Programme.
Melissa Farrow began her music studies in New Zealand. From an early age she gravitated towards the sounds of period winds and gut strings, inspired by recordings of the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century. Melissa first had lessons on baroque flute aged just 13 with Konrad Huenteler from Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century. She pursued Post Graduate studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under the tutelage of Harrie Starreveld (flute) as well as Marten Root and Walter van Hauwe (recorder and traverso). Since returning to Australia, Melissa has enjoyed an extensive career as a specialist in early flutes and recorder. She has been principal flautist of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra for the last ten years. Recent performances as flute soloist with ABO include Vivaldi’s ‘La Notte’ concerto in 2011 under the direction of Ricardo Minasi and in 2013 with Telemann’s flute and violin concerto in E minor alongside Stefano Montanari. Melissa has also toured with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and performs and records regularly with the Orchestra of the Antipodes, The Australian Haydn Ensemble, Ironwood, The Marais Project and Ludivico’s Band.
