LANDSCAPE AND STILL LIFE My recent landscapes and still lifes revisit classical genres I first explored in the 1980s. Working within the confines of these, at times clichĂŠd idioms, I have set myself a challenge to create a depth and freshness and a contemporary relevance.

I painted those places that have moved and inspired me: glimpses of pristine coves and rocky outcrops framed by the trees on the NSW south coast; the wild seas and stretches of beach near Falmouth on the Tasmanian east coast; winter forests in the mountains in Kyushu, Japan.

Composing and painting still lifes is a process of quiet contemplation that has been part of my practice for 40 years. Using familiar bowls and pieces of cloth collected on my travels over the years I arrange and rearrange objects, shifting my angle of view and the source of light... always attempting to produce something elegant and profound in its ordinariness.
