Julian Twigg 10 months at The George Julian Twigg’s ‘10 Months At The George’ - his 16th solo exhibition - represents a change in direction for this acclaimed and popular local painter. Via the medium of a 10 month residency in the turret of St Kilda landmark The George Hotel, Julian Twigg has temporarily laid aside his usual maritime obsession and turned his eye (and his brush) to life on dry land, and to chronicling the streetscapes and the architecture of his beloved St Kilda. As a resident of the area for more than 20 years, Julian Twigg has the sights and the sounds and the feel of St Kilda in his bones. From a unique vantage point high above Fitzroy Street, this renowned local artist has compiled an arresting series of images that cast a wondrous light on the familiar streets of his stomping ground. This series is a joyride with the top down - a sun-striped panegyric to the sheer visual voluptuousness of this unique seaside neighbourhood. Twigg’s St Kilda is a feast for the eyes. Palm trees frame the gaping mouth of Luna Park, which bursts from the canvas in vivid, vibrant colour to remind us of the area’s past and present status as Melbourne’s playground. Yachts bob on a bright blue sea. Moorish domes pierce an azure sky. Swans disport themselves on Albert Park Lake and flags flutter atop the distinguished architectural relics of a golden age. Whether you’re a St Kilda local of long-standing, or a neophyte new to the charms of this unique locale, there will be something in Julian Twigg’s show to surprise and enchant you. Just the antidote to a grey Melbourne winter. Prepare to be delighted. Scott McIntyre 2015 Writer and long time friend of the artist
