Proposal for a multifunctional residential, office, and commercial hybrid building. To be constructed as an infill in a superblock RIWKH(L[DPSOHRI%DUFHORQDb7KHSURMHFW aims to provide dual purpose; to provide zero commute work environment for residents while also revitalizing the inner courtyard of the block that has been lost over the years due the growing density of residents and businesses into the blocks.

Cerda Block Hybrid

The site sits on the edge of the Eixample DQH[SDQVLRQSURMHFWWKURXJKDVHULHVRI repetitive chamfered blocks of buildings, by the city to connect nearby towns of %DUFHORQD7KHOHVVV\VWHPDWLFDUHDDGMD cent is the Gothic Quarter of the city. The oldest part of the city where cultural staples of Barcelona are found. The proposed building lies next to the northern corner of the block. It faces due north-west to the street and southeast to the courtyard.

The limits of the site create difficulties in natural lighting of the building. The building itself is long and slender in the x - y plane and only allows for sunlight on the southeast and QRUWKZHVWVLGHV7RVROYHWKLVOLJKWLQJLVVXH a light-well is created through the middle. It brings in natural light and air flow to a central courtyard within the building.

The buildings multi-program function is split up into alternating stacks of offices and residential housing, with the commercial on the ground floor and floor. 10 Posed with creating a roof structure to repurpose the ruins of an old church within a small municipality of Catalonia, we turned towards looking into the cultural traditions of the area. The Sardana dance is as much a dance as it is a symbolic ritual to the people of Catalonia. Recognized and practiced all over as sign of unity, it involves all ages and acts as a cultural connection through generations. The project connects the two remaining structures of the church through draping canopies to create a light, flowing roof structure for performance venues. When it is not being used the venue also acts as a meditative pavilion. My contributions to the project ranges from collaboration of the initial design idea through the production of the drawing and models. In specific the design diagrams, structural drawings, and model building were . carried out by myself.

Drape Pavilion

The image shows an artists rendering of the traditional Catalonian Sardana dance. This particular image shows the members in the hard raised position. The dance progresses through a series of lowered and raised hand positions, with a variety of steps as well. All while remaining holding hands in a circle.

11

A void must be filled. The existing site, the remaining structure of the Romanesque / Baroque church, peacefully sits in this site, but it asks for more; a performance space with a contemporary structure, something that doesn’t intrude space but represents a new space for activity.

The basic structure originates with a repetitive modular wood construction that staples into the site, bridging the void existing on the site, without seeming heavy and dominant, simultaneously creating a new more significant of space.

By compressing and extruding the wood posts, a range of different spaces are created within the footprint. Creating shaded spaces for reading and various activities, or lit spaces that catch the fresh sunlight of the region.

Drape Pavilion

An abstraction of the Sardana Dance, the roof of the structure drapes and holds at different heights sheltering the performance space. The roof also drops at certain moments and acts as a hammock for the space when it is not being used for performances, transforming the site to consistent active space.

government of Barcelona made a large intervention in the old barrio of Sants when they created a ral kilometers long, to enclose four metro lines and 2 high speed rails. The box, though successful educe noise level in the barrio, felt short however in that in created a physical barrier right through he neighborhood. With a park already in the process of being design for the top of the box the area hing more to connect and revitalize the area. This project aims to cultivate ideas, social gathering, enhance the community by creating a new office for Google directly adjacent to the concrete box. The building will act as a social gathering space while also acting as a location of innovation.

17

The site operates at three levels. Extruding the form to reach all three levels gives padestrian accessaabilty, and informs function through user density at different levels.

Rambla Bada (pedestrian street)

The building reaching up and on to the concrete box is vital to its incorporation with planned urbinzation of the top of the box as a pedestrian highway.

Voids are created in the top floors. Pusing and pulling creates new space. Entrance bays on the two ends, and a exterior, yet private terrace.

Pedestrian access comes from the three different levels. Clear entrances from eacho f these are created to invite people in to interact with the community ceter.

Program: Observation Pa villion Location: Meadowbrook Pa rk, Urbana, Illinois

Observation

The design is based around the idea of a new vantage point fro m which to take in the surrounding Illinois landscape through sculptural int ervention. Illinois topography is often flat and one dimensional. The observation pla tform provides quick access to a new elevation with a 360 degree vantage of the par k. By providing this new level, the user gains a different perspective of the landscape pre viously not achievable. The design is achieved by clean lines and a light structure to pro vide a small footprint.

hool prototype built in Yaboahkroam, a rural village in Ghana where the wind had destroyed the only school of the area. gned by Andrea Tabocchini & Fancesca Vittorini, won several international awards. The project was constructed in 60 days with just 12 000 euro, togetherwith the local population and volunteers from 20 different countries.

ty was available it was built by hand, crafting materials available on site (earth, wood and vegetation), 8 000 kg of soil and planing 3km of wood with 2 hand planers. The lack of resources and the site me the opportunity to propose a sustainable design that merges architecture and landscape: the staggered srooms are built by compacting the local earth, a light wood structure lifts the roof up, allowing zenithal light and generates a natural ventilation of the spaces, while the vegetation of the garden becomes the continuation creasing the shaded spaces to study outdoor.

InsideOut

The result is a work that blurs the boundary between inside and outside, offering an alternative to standard introverted classrooms and proposing an affordable and easily replicable design that values the local know-how and pushes its limits.
