INDIAN MOVIES IN 2015

R.M. VIJAYAKAR MUMBAI — We now try and see which films actually made money or lost it. The business of a film is probably the most discussed subject in Hindi cinema nowadays, even going beyond the classic layman’s past favorite gossip fodder about who’s seeing or sleeping with whom! Thanks to the aggressive media and carefully cultivated lobbies, there is little congruency on this aspect. There is too much information available easily, as quotes or on the internet, and most of it is factually off-track, deliberately or through ignorance.

But in this age of corporations largely taking up major films, the picture is literally different by the film. This year we had Eros distributing “Bajirao Mastani” worldwide and making a profit already, Rajshri Productions and Fox Star

Studios handling Indian and overseas distribution respectively and making a packet on “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo,” and Red Chillies Entertainment selling “Dilwale” to different producers and making a thick profit even as many Indian distributors have lost small to big money with the overseas market performing far better, as has happened with so many Shah Rukh Khan movies right from “Kal Ho Naa Ho” (2003).

The hugest hit was obviously “Bajrangi Bhaijaan,” which has crossed Rs. 320 crore in India and Rs. 626 crore globally. The second biggest was “Bahubali - The Beginning,” which cost Rs. 165 crore to the distributor but made about Rs. 600 crore globally (in all languages, from which Hindi accounted for Rs. 120 crore). In terms of traditional revenue deals,

it means that the distributor has made half of that — Rs. 300 crore, which means it has made Rs. 135 (300 minus 165) crore of pure profit from theatrical runs itself, with every other right (music, satellite, Home Video) being a bonus to the producer.

The smaller films, of course, were a different kettle of fish. Whether distributed by corporate (who may have also produced them) or individual distributors, they made a decent to extraordinary profit.

Heading the list was “Tanu Weds Manu Returns,” which at Rs. 152 crore, numerically made almost five times its cost of Rs. 31 crore in Indian cinemas alone. Like “Bajrangi…” and “Bahubali…” therefore, it was a clean hit. And “Prem Ratan….” and “Bajirao…” are likely to follow suit.

kinds — the “clean hit” being the one in which everyone — producer, distributors and exhibitors (theater owner) all make definite profits. In the rest, the exhibitor (who is generally very safe, as he gets a fixed rental or a minimum guarantee in most cases) and producer make the profit, while the distributor(s) face(s) the loss.

In today’s times when many corporate entities co-produce and distribute themselves (as with Eros), they first sell the satellite, Home Video and music rights and get a fix on what they must earn from theaters, which is usually easily managed. So if the film does not do well, they make a slim rather than a big profit. Losses are almost never there, unless the disaster is on a truly big scale like “Bombay Velvet,” where producers Phantom Films also had a contractual liability along with Fox Star (distributors and co-producers) in case of a flop.

“Pyaar Ka PunchNama 2,” “Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon,” “Piku,” and “Hate Story 3” were also clean hits this year, as were “Badlapur,” “Ek Paheli-Leela” and “Dum Laga Ke Haisha” despite the latter’s limited release.

“Manjhi - The Mountain Man” recovered its slim investment.

The same was true of “Talvar,” “Jazbaa” and “Drishyam.”

The disputed successes, or films where one perception (amount of money raked in) was plus and another (return of investment)

was suspect, were many, led by “Baby,”(Rs. 95.5 cr. in India), “Singh Is Bliing” (Rs. 90.25 cr.) and “Gabbar Is Back” (Rs. 86 cr.).

But as a trade analyst pointed out, “Most Akshay Kumar films break even or make a small profit.” High costs, however, take a toll with those that do not, like Kumar’s fourth film, “Brothers.”

Two more films did business of over Rs. 75 cr.— “Dil Dhadakne Do” and “Welcome Back,” but due to their high costs are considered losers. And “NH10” is touted to have recovered money from non-theatrical revenues.

The clear-cut flops were led by “Bombay Velvet” (a mammoth disaster) and the other names were “Roy,” “Shamitabh,” “Hamari Adhuri Kahani,” “Hero,” “Mr. X,” “Tevar,” the inordinately expensive “Hawaizaada” considering its lack of face value, “Bangistan,” “Welcome to Karachi,” “Shaandaar,” “All Is Well,” “Katti Batti,” “Phantom” and “Tamasha.” (Courtesy - India-West)

Indie Meme brings meaningful cinema to Austin

A few years ago, Alka realized that big Bollywood films kept coming to Austin, but the meaningful cinema, which educates people along the way, remained absent.

She and her partner, Tripti Bhatnagar, reached out to sponsors in the community to support their events.

‘Kaphal’, an award winning children’s film won the hearts of Austinites because it revolved around friendship between school going kids in the mountainous terrain of northern India.

Both UT and St. Edwards along with about twelve businesses came forward to support them.

She, in a short span of two and half years, developed a simple idea of bringing Indian quality cinema to Austin into Indie Meme, a prestigious non-profit film society with membership.

Alka has made a good plan for Indie Meme. The non-profit buys the rights of the movie they screen and reserve the film in their library.

Indie Meme promotes better understanding of society through cinema, ‘one film at a time’. Often the director is in attendance for Q/A. All their movies have subtitles and usually all discussions are in English.

Alka realized that very few people knew about it and saw the need to watch something more rewarding than what was usually available.

That is the best part of the Austin community.

They always join hands to make it a party and while there, help the people who initiate a plan to make it more fun and so relaxing.

This December, Alka and her partner Tripti Bhatnagar in Dallas brought Walk the Walk, about the pride parade in India. The director Moses Tulasi answered questions from an audience of about fifty people from different members of the South Asian community.

In 2016, Indie Meme plans to host its first film festival in spring. They plan to show about six films to their audience with separate prices for members and non-members.

Membership price ranges from $25 for individual member to $200 per year for a benefactor.

On January 15 at 7 p.m., Indie Meme plans to show MOOR, the Oscar nomination from Pakistan in the foreign films category in the Southwest Theater on Lake Creek Parkway in Austin.

Moor has been critically acclaimed for, ‘it’s fantastic visual landscape, setting, performances and music’.

Jami, the director, is flying in for a brief discussion about Moor after the screening.

Make A Difference – Happy New Year

By Vidya Kumar It seems like yesterday that we were wishing one another for New Year of 2015. Now 2015 is over and we are into 2016. I am sure that at the start of the every New Year we make resolutions and as per statistics over 50% of the time it is not adhered beyond six months. Yet it has almost become second nature for us to have New Year resolutions every year.

So this year I am trying to have resolution - like not to expect anything.

The first resolution would be not to expect that my family will help in keeping the house clean or organized. Imagine when there is no expectations then either I will do the work myself or let it remain undone until it gets done. So there goes my frustration with my husband about he not keeping the things in its place hence no arguments and life is so much peaceful.

At the same time because the economy is still bearish – naturally no expectation regarding raise in the salary. So here I am – stepping into next year – with the resolution that there would be no increase in salary yet expenses are going to go up due to inflation however much the government denies and as am working in financial sector – the regulations are going to be more stringent with the result work will be assuredly more. Yet since there is no expectation I am going to be much happier just because I have a job to get up and go.

So come the leap year – no more resolutions of losing weight, getting organized or eating healthy. Just resolve to have no expectation whatsoever and accept life as it comes on a day to day basis.

Strongly supported by Linda Day, violinist with the Austin Symphony, the Poetry Caravan has been commended for its spirit of volunteerism. On December 12th 2010 the kids and parents met to recognize the kids who participate in the monthly performances. Approximately 10 kids were involved. This does not just signify the quantity of participants, but the process of coming together once a year as community, that makes the difference.

With my experience and observing Indian communities elsewhere I feel we can do much better job of ‘coming together as Indian community’.

This is a show of strength and that is good for the image of the community and also for our children to experience the look and feel of their total community.

Two couples, Dr. Junaid and Yasmeen Siddiqui and Adnan and Hawama Sattar continued to be invited for meals at their friends’ homes as they have recently returned from Hajj, a farz on Muslims who can afford it once in their lifetime. It is a tradition in the Pakistani community to host the ‘Hajis’ and celebrate with them.

While all the dinners were going on, funds drive for the Syrian Refugees was inititated by Dr. Zarmeena Vendal to help Muslim Community Support Services meet their monthly expenses for the increasing number of refugee families dependant on them.

On the movie scene, Star Wars was a big taker in the Pakistani kids.

Many kids went to see the movie and agreed that it was totally worth it. Some girls dressed up as Princess Leia when they went to watch the movie. Sabiha and Akif Sultan have regularly hosted Antakshri at their home and will do so again on January 1st to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. Every family tries its best to be all-inclusive and so generates good will from all.

My New Year’s Goals

This is a general theme with New Year’s Resolutions, and it’s why I don’t even use the term myself, and always prefer to model my life improvements around goals.

To show you what I mean, here are several of my own genuine goals, all of which are much more specific versions of the vague “resolutions” above:

Most Americans Support Funding For Public Transit More than seven in 10 Americans support increased federal funding for the nation’s public transportation systems in communities of all sizes, according to a survey conducted by ORC International for the American Public Transportation Association (APTA).

This support is broad, according to the survey, spanning various age groups and political affiliations, with some of the highest numbers among Millennials ages 18 to 34 (77 percent) and individuals age 65 and older (76 percent).

Owning or having access to a private vehicle does not diminish this support, with 71 percent of car owners reporting that they want to see more federal investment in public transportation in both large and small communities. In addition, over half of respondents said

public transit is important in attracting and retaining employers in

their community

As Congress finalizes work on the Surface Transportation Bill, some

experts are echoing the public sentiment.

“No matter where you live and work and what age you are, public transit provides vital access to jobs and everything a community has to offer,” says APTA President and CEO Michael P. Melaniphy.

Experiment was successful and proved that one can grow winged beans in Central Texas climate.

The winged beans are unique and resemble to Soybean. Winged beans all parts leaves, flowers, pods and roots are edible.

Renowned Indian Sand Artist Sculpts World’s Tallest Santa Claus

In an effort to spread the message of peace in the world on Christmas Eve, internationally renowned Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik sculpted a 45 feet high and 75 feet wide Santa Claus at the Puri beach in Orissa.

The giant sculpture has been confirmed as the world’s largest sand sculpture by the Limca Book of Records.

The award-winning artist tweeted a photo of the award Dec. 29 alongside the sculpture photo with a post stating: “Now our 45ft high world’s largest Sand Santa has set

a new #worldRecord. Today Confirmed by Limca book of Records.”

Pattnaik, assisted by 20 of his students from Sudarsan Sand Art Institute of Puri, completed the mammoth structure in 22 hours using about 1000 tonnes of sand.

Santa Claus was not the only statue that Pattnaik created on Christmas Eve. The Padma Shree awardee also erected detailed sand sculptures of Lord Jesus and Mother Mary. The artist has in the past created many eye grabbing sculptures to mark special occasions and raise awareness.
