The Class of 2020 dedicates this yearbook to... Mr. Anthony Benning

“Whether he’s helping students in the classroom, coaching the freshman hockey team, encouraging kids in softball or talking with students out of class, Mr Benning is a well-loved teacher at Austin Prep. Although he has only been a teacher at Austin for three years, he has become a very popular and a wellknown name in this short time period. As a history teacher, Mr. Benning not and safe environment.

© student of Benning’s states that “he will help you through any situation, and cares about each and every one of his students.” It is a known fact within Mr Bennings’ students that he cares greatly about them and their well-beings. Although some students describe Mr Benning as “reserved,” many also mention his helpful and caring personality. Another student of Mr Benning told that “he connects with us and is very relatable as a teacher.”

The class of 2020 thanks Mr Anthony Benning for being a wonderful teacher, mentor, and role model to all of Austin Prep. In and out of the classroom, Mr Benning will continue to influence and guide each of his students to success, and will hold a special place in their hearts.

To the Senior Class of 2020 - Congratulations! I arrived at Austin Prep in your eighth-grade year. I look back to the sunny afternoon during your Class Trip to DC with great pride in thinking about how you greeted and interacted with members of the House of Representatives. It has been incredible to be a part of your journey these past five years as your class has grown and you’ve collectively made your mark on Austin Prep. Wishing the Class of 2020 all the best as you begin your next chapter!

- Mr. McLaughlin

To the Senior Class of 2020, I would like to extend my sincerest congratulations. This is an important mile—marker in your lives. For many of you, I had the awesome opportunity fo get to know you throughout your academic years af Austin Preparatory School in various school-related interactions. I \ / a will always remember the service trip fo Puerto Rico and how — |your faces lit up during your first encounter while swimming in — | the bioluminescent bay. For some of you, we spent 15 days = traveling across the world to New Zealand and Australia S where we all opened our hearts and minds to a place we only imagined in our dreams.

Class of 2020: You are an exceptional class, and will always be a special one to me because | arrived at AP your freshmen year and first met many of you in Technology (where you made some pretty epic short films!) It has been a pleasure to see you develop into so many impressive young men and women over these four years, and to have had so many of you in Art and Yearbook classes. Do well, and do good. This book is for you! -Mrs. Sport

A letter to the Class of 2020

Dear Class of 2020,

For those of you reading this letter, there are probably a few different camps into which you fall. First, there are some of you that don’t walk down memory lane often, you have moved forward confidently. Second, Austin is all you knew for seven years of your life, and you are both excited and fearful as you enter the next chapter. Third, you've been in the moment; not being able to wear the Austin Polo to your first day of classes was a shock to the system and memories of your time at Austin come in waves.

No matter where you stand right now, in the end, the tough days won't seem so terrible any longer, and the great days will be imprinted in your memories forever. You will wish for one of Ms. Oz’s Bio tests as you take final exams, you will finally admit that Mr. DeLuca’s research paper wasn’t that hard, and you will crave Bagel World as you walk to your morning class, wondering how you ever made it to school on time for 8 AM classes (though let’s be real, many of you didn’t make it on time).

There is a large family of alumni that can say they graduated from Austin Prep, but only you can say you are a member of the Class of 2020. And to be a member of this class is more unique than any other. Your time on campus ended abruptly. You heard the words “new normal” and “in these uncertain times” more than you could count as you waited to see what the end of your Austin journey would look like. But I hope that you realized something during this time: no matter where you are, who you keep in touch with, or what your future may be, you will always be a Cougar. Congratulations,

Mrs. Choate (Ms. Grace)

She remarked,“Austin really became like my second home and it allowed me to form great relationships with my friends, other students, and staff.” About the major changes that have happened in the past seven years, she commented, “It has been exciting to see the changes that have happened over the years such as the change in schedule, new football field, and new cafeteria.” When asked what it would be like at a new school, Kayley explained, “I think it will be hard to adjust to a new school since I have been in the same environment for so long. I don't really remember what it is like going to a new school, so I think it will interesting and challenging to go through that process again. am excited to meet new people and branch out of my comfort zone!”

Letter to the Class of 2021

Dear Class of 2021,

You did it! Congratulations on making it through junior year! Undoubtedly this _ year was full of challenging courses and new experiences. I hope you enjoyed it , and made some unforgettable memories. I have had the privilege of having some , section of the Class of 2021 for the past three years. I’ve so enjoyed getting to know | you over that time. You are intelligent, driven and passionate. One of my favorite | things about the Class of 2021 is that you allow each other to be yourselves. Your } class stands out to me for your unique personalities and original sense of humor. ) Every year I’ve watched students with very different personalities work together on various group activities, and I’ve been touched by the ways in which you make - room for one another. I’m excited to see you continue to create community as . seniors. You have one more year to go! Make it count! Don’t forget what it was like - to be a freshman, treat the freshmen the way you would have wanted to be treated. | Try activities you’ve always wanted to, but have been afraid of. Get to know the people in your grade that you don’t know very well. There’s still time to do all the things you hoped for. Senior year is about more than applying to college. It’s about celebrating your successes and reflecting on what you want out of college and out - of life. Take time to look back and give yourself credit for all the things you've - done to get to this point.

May you be happy, may you be healthy, may you live with ease and may you be at peace.

Letter to Class of 2022

To the Class of 2022,

As you conclude your Sophomore year, I hope you look back on the last several months fondly with a sense of accomplishment. Being a Sophomore is tough! You endured countless sleep-deprived nights, days with multiple assessments, pressure from everyone you know to “be thinking about college,” and the natural desire to be a teenager. It's all tough to balance and to do it well. Im sure there were many times you felt like it was overwhelming. Take a breath... It's over. You did it!

Now the bad news.... You have two more years of it. My generation doesn’t always appreciate the stresses and reality of yours. Forgive us. We are old. We didn’t go to school in your reality. It was easier to get into college because not everyone went. It was easier to do the things we loved not the things we have to do to get into college. It was easier to find time to be with ourselves and with God because our phones and watches weren’t constantly buzzing. It's a different reality for you. We may not always say it, but we get it.

In the midst of all this, hope you took the opportunity to support your classmates at athletic and artistic events. hope you, yourself, participated in something you loved on stage, behind the scenes or on the athletic field or court. I hope you made new friends, laughed with them, supported them and found new ways to connect. I hope you enjoyed your experiences in your classrooms, that your teachers supported you and that you gave 110% every day that you could. The good news is - that doesn’t change. The next two years should be filled with more of those memories, and I encourage you to double down on them. There will be pressure on you all the time to do more, but I hope you make the time to be present and mindful of the moment. It's worth it.

In these final two years of your Austin journey, take advantage of the opportunities presented to you. Go meet with a college rep, even if they aren’t on your list. Reach out to someone in your - class to help, even if they aren’t in your circle of friends. Attend a service trip, take advantage of international travel opportunities, join a new club or get on stage for the first time. Choose your - classes based on what you enjoy not what you feel like you need to take. Remember that St. Augustine recognized the purpose of education was to learn wisdom not for the sake of advancement but simply because wisdom was valuable in and of itself. Good luck next year and beyond!

Letter to the Class of 2023

Class of 2023,

Congratulations on surviving your Freshman year of high school! Whether you were new to Austin Prep or were here for middle school, you quickly learned your way around campus and adjusted to the demands of being an Upper School student. I had the pleasure of knowing most of you from Freshman Seminar class. What a joy it has been to teach you (and learn from you!) this year.

You are a talented and engaged group of students and, quite frankly, a lot of fun! You are creative, intelligent, and hard-working. It was wonderful to observe the way you supported and affirmed each other on a daily basis. It was exciting to cheer and applaud for you whether you were competing in a sport or performing on a stage.

remember fondly the discussions we had with the Question Jar, our Play-Doh meditations, the joy on your face when you earned Kermit or selected a sweet treat from Jar O’Candy, and of course the daily check-ins! I am grateful for our volunteer student teachers who shared with us their knowledge and taught us new skills.

As you continue to grow and mature, I hope you will realize that the Augustinian values of Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas are values for life. May you always seek the truth, be a productive member of your community, and take care of each other. May you also take good care of yourself (mind, body, and spirit!). Get your sleep, limit your caffeine intake, and pray often! Thank God for the blessings in your life. Realize that no matter what happens to you in life, you can get through it.

| am grateful to play a small role in your journey at Austin Prep and am excited to see you transform from young teenagers to young adults. Best wishes for the class of 2023!

Letter to Class of 2024

Dear 8th Graders,

Congratulations on surviving middle school! Some people think that the middle school years are the most challenging of young person’s formation, but you are a group of students who has really risen above social and academic challenges and chose to make the most of every single day. High school is on the horizon and without a doubt, you will continue to grow into the people God knows you are meant to be.

This year has been filled with many memorable moments. You were inspired to grow in the spirit of courage by the summer read, The Red Bandana. Some of you represented the middle school on the stage at school plays, danced in the Nutcracker, or performed in the school band, giving your talents to enrich the artistic life of our community. Many of you gave your all on the athletic fields and learned about teamwork and perseverance. You learned about our nation’s founding and took steps toward your own independence as well. You learned how to be an active member of our local community by participating in service-learning opportunities. It was a year of academic, social, and spiritual growth for all.

St. Augustine teaches us to embrace our restless hearts and continue to struggle with big questions until we find our purpose. Eighth grade has been an exciting start to this journey for so many of you, and it has my been a pleasure to watch you grow.

Dear Class of 2025,

Congratulations on a successful year in 7th grade. Each year is always an adventure, and 7th grade is no exception. Together, we traveled the Silk Road with Marco Polo, went on Crusades with Richard the Lionheart, discovered Maya ruins and established colonies in the New World. I was fortunate to have every 7th grader in class this year and when | reflect on our time together, | realize how fortunate I am to have been your teacher and watch you grow into the confident young men and women you are today.

As you move on to 8th grade, I would like to offer two pieces of advice. First, live in the present and don’t worry too much about the future. Enjoy being you now! Also, get involved! Join a new club, try out for a team, step outside your comfort zone. Middle school is a chance to discover who you are and you should make the most out of all the opportunities presented to you. In the years to come, when you reflect on your middle school experience, you won't remember your grade on the Ancient China test. Instead you will remember the friendships you formed and the experiences you had together.

Congratulations on a great year! | am incredibly proud of each and every one of you. Good luck to all of you as you continue on your Austin Prep journey.

Letter to Class of 2026

Dear Class of 2026,

Congratulations on the completion of your first year at Austin Prep!

Looking back on those first days of orientation, I have to smile. Do you remember | when you all arrived on campus for the first time wearing your APS uniforms and | wondering what the coming year would bring? Were you nervous? Were you . excited? Were you ready to get your journey underway? Regardless of how you were feeling on that very first day, take a moment to reflect on how far you've come! So many of you have learned that you can accomplish anything when you : set your mind to it! Did you ever think that you would be learning things like Latin or Mandarin? Did you ever think that you would be reading so much? i

You’ve grown so much since September, and you have done so as a group. What a great example of Unitas and Caritas! It makes me so proud when I overhear you working together or bonding over a common goal. Watching you help one another } study for quizzes and tests, take the time to share supplies, or even share a laugh, shows that you have a great sense of Unitas and Caritas within your grade! It is obvious that you are a bunch of individuals who care about one another. It is that sense of connection, that feeling of Unitas, that will reassure you that you are amongst people who will support you as you move through your Austin journey. Isn’t it wonderful to automatically belong to such a wonderful group of people?

Within the Class of 2026, you are the special group that will be known as “the lifers.” As your class grows through the years, make sure that you keep that welcoming, Caritas spirit alive. Give each other permission to be imperfect. Allow each other to grow by learning from mistakes. When you see someone in your class who needs support, cheer them on. In other words, keep being you, and we, as your teachers will be here to support you on your way!

Keep up the wonderful work!

Mrs. Blais

Go Cougars!

The Austin Prep community never fails to show their school |j Spirit at any sports games, {drama productions or other performances. At athletic events, the bleachers are always packed with supportive students dressed in our school colors. The drama club puts on great performances that impress the whole crowd of students, teachers and families. Sophomore Devin Donofrio-Ralls commented on what school spirit is to him: "It Jis a way to fully express myself. It's also a way for the | community to come together and share a special energy together. One of my favorite Austin events is going to the basketball games... the atmosphere at the game and in the student section is electric. I show my school spirit through what I wear, my energy, and my participation. In addition, I try to participate in as many activities and events that I can, to hype it up and to get the full school spirit experience."

Or: June 17, 2019, twelve Austin Prep students along with the Head of the Middle School, Mr. Michael McLaughlin, and Spanish teacher Mrs. Linda Filadoro, headed to New Zealand to begin a two-week journey. The group first traveled to Rotorua, and then explored the Agrodome, the Lady Knox Geyser, and the the film set of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings! They continued their journey in Brisbane, Australia, and traveled north to the Sunshine Coast. There students and faculty had the opportunity to learn how to surf, and had the memorable experience of meeting a trio of kangaroos on their way back to their hotel! Their Aussie adventure provided other opportunities for beach relaxation, and the group enjoyed taking a ferry to Fraser Island. Another highlight was a tour of the iconic Sydney Opera House, where Sydney Newcomb '20 even had the opportunity to perform a song for the group!

Sophia Freeman '20 summarized the trip as "life-changing." She explained, "the overall beauty of New Zealand was astonishing... the trees, landscapes, and animals...[were] something you could never even imagine. It truly felt like a different world; however, the air did constantly smell like sulfur because of the geysers!" Sophia also remembers fondly when they visited one of the tribal grounds in NZ and "were greeted by the nicest, most genuine people I've personally ever met."

Mr. McLaughlin added that he was proud of the students and how they "represented their school in their genuine interest in the Maori, Kiwi, Aboriginal, and Aussie cultures." All in all, Austin's "Adventure Down Under" was the trip of a lifetime!

In the summer of 2019, seven Austin students, along with history teacher Ms. Alicia Varasso and Spanish teacher Mrs. Linda Sherry, had the opportunity to tour some of the most iconic sites of Greece. Their travels included visits to the Acropolis, Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Olympia, Delphi, and of course, an olive farm. Genevieve Rhodes '20 remembered, “Going to Greece was one of the best experiences of my life. It gave me a chance to explore some of my favorite places and become closer with some of my best friends before our senior year. Every minute...was something that will forever cherish and remember. can’t wait to go back!” Lauren Payne '20 agreed,“The Austin Prep trip to Greece was a learning experience I'll forever be thankful to have been apart of. [It] was my first time traveling out of the country, and the students and staff who came along on the trip helped me to come out of my comfort zone... learned so much about myself and the Greek culture while on [the] two week long trip."

Convocation Mass

A New Year, A New Beginning

On Friday, September 13th, 2019, Austin Prep students, faculty, and families gathered in Meelia Hall for the annual Convocation “Mass that kicks off the new school year. The mass was led by fr. Armano, followed by an inspiring speech from Dr. Hickey. The mission of Austin Prep is "to inspire hearts to unite, minds to inquire, and hands to serve.” In line with the mission, Headmaster Dr. Hickey asked our community to focus on how we interact with each other within the Augustinian community, which begins with caritas. He said, "€nd from caritas flows the presumption of goodness, kindness, and civility that we ought to have for each other." School President, Josh @zor, also asked us to focus on embracing the present moment, and to not worry so much about our futures. He said, "As students we fantasize about our futures, and neglect the beauties that come with growing up."

On Thursday, October 24th, students at Austin decked out in red to celebrate their first Red Bandanna Day. This day was dedicated to the whole-school summer reading book, The Red Bandanna, by Tom Rinaldi This book shares the story of one man, Welles Crowther, who made a very brave decision during the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Sophomore Nicki Theriault commented, “I enjoyed it more than any other books we have

read. think it was good for us all to read about such an amazing role model.” The theme of kindness was expected to be shown throughout the Austin community to resemble what Welles did for other people in the towers. Student Council member Lizzie Hart said, “I would love to see this

continue for future years. It really brings a larger sense of community to Austin Prep.” On October 26th, following Red Bandanna Day, there was an annual 5K race held at Boston College, which Welles used to attend Welles has an inspiring legacy and will always be remembere -d as the man in the red bandanna

This year's Powder Puff was one for the books. Despite the rainy weather the girls showed up ready to play, and kept warm by working hard on the field. Both teams had smiles on their faces the whole time, even if they dropped the ball. The Seniors took the lead early on, and cheered "Scoreboard!" loudly from the sidelines, leaving the Juniors’ coach Josh Azor not too happy. Junior Hannah Sullivan scored a touchdown and brought some hope to her team, but it wasn't enough to win. The Seniors beat the Juniors with the final score of 20-6. Josh told his team before the game that "@ur chances of winning weren't very high, and the outcome didn't matter as long as we played with swag.”

RUNNING Te EXPO Mile

It takes hard work and determination to reach your goals, and for Austin Prep’s Cross Country teams that means running the extra mile. Both teams finished with strong records this year. yf The girls were 5-3 and the boys were 7-1. They both qualified for states and the girls finished third. Some of the girls attended Regionals and they finished strongly. At CCLs, the boys tear put forth a great effort, finishing in second and losing only by one point. The girls also came _ close to a win at CCLs, finishing in third place. Every year the team goes on lots of fun meets) like Twilight. Katelyn Quinn-Cyr ‘20 said. “We load up the bus and all go down to Falmoufh, , Cape Cod and we run a meet which is huge and a lot of fun. We see all our friends from other! schools, play cornhole, and run at night. The Austin Prep Girls Soccer Family

The Austin Prep girls soccer team went 15-3-4 this season. The team was very successful in the beginning of the season, but their skill and chemistry improved a tremendous amount as the season went on. The girls soccer team had an amazing season that ended in the quarterfinals in playoffs. Senior captain Liv Caruso says, ie “We build on team chemistry every day this season without even realizing it.” It hasn’t been easy for the girls though; the team has had to overcome injuries from some of their top players and pick themselves up after the few tough losses. The team's success comes from their hard work and focus at every practice. “Mia Han, senior captain says, “ Our focus during the season helps the team stay on task and work together to accomplish our goals.” The team's strong bond definitely has a lot to do with their success. The girls support for another creates the family-like environment. Senior captain Jessie Spada says, “d’m going to miss the girls and how much fun we have together. It’s my second family and I’ve been lucky to spend 5 years on this team.”

One team, one dream

The 2019 Austin Prep boys soccer team was one to remember. The boys started the season a little bit slow, with a losing record halfway into the season. Sr. Captain ; Michael Bulduc shares his thoughts on how the team adjusted halfway through the season. "After playing each team once, and realizing what we did wrong, we started to play our game at our level and not at the other team's - level." Soon, the boys got on a winning streak, and it - seemed like they were unstoppable. "The highlight of the , year was clinching the playoffs," Bulduc says."At the < beginning of the seeason there were questions if we were = going to make the playoffs. We worked extremely hard, + and that ended up with us not losing for 7 games in a row." ~ The team ended up losing in the quater finals, but ended 4) the year with one of the biggest season comebacks in se school history.

The Joys of Winter

The late fall and winter seasons were filled with many spectacular events and performances at Austin Prep. Blue Mass was a time to celebrate and thank our first responders for all of their tireless work and focus during calls. At the conclusion of the Mass, Fr. Andres Nino blessed all of the emergency vehicles. In the beginning of December, the seniors went on their class trip to Walt Disney World and had the trip of a lifetime. The annual Nutcracker performance was a huge success in the Austin community with two strong performances led by Mrs. Marla PascucciByrne. Later that week, the entire Austin Prep community gathered in Meelia Hall for Lessons and Carols. The band played, the chorus sang, and the students listened as everyone was brought into the Christmas Spirit. Another Christmas event here at Austin is Door Decorating. Advisories competed against each other for the best door decoration themes. Mr. William's advisory came out on top for the Upper School with the “Nightmare Before Christmas” themed door. The capstone of the season was the trip the Austin Prep chorus made to Rome, Italy. They had an unforgettable experience singing in front of Pope Francis at the Vatican. The chorus also sang at the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Peter's Basilica. Every performance and event create a unique and fun-filled winter season for the Austin Prep community.

Winter sports were a huge success at Austin Prep this year. The cheer team had a great season bringing lots of energy to basketball games. The swim team capped off their season by winning the CCL Championship for the seventh consecutive season! The boys basketball team was one for the records, winning the CCL Championship for the first time since 2008! They headed into the playoffs as the #1 seed in D4 North and made it to the North Finals. The girls basketball team also had a great season earning the #8 seed in the D3 North and making it to the quarterfinals. The boys and girls hockey teams continued their great stretch at Austin, both competing in the D1 playoffs. The boys made it to the quarterfinals, and the girls had a record of were named D1 co-champions when the champtionship game was at TD Garden was cancellled amid Coronavius health concerns. Lastly, winter track completed a stellar season with the girls winning their first MIAA State Championship! And senior captains Emily Hickey and Lauren Sablone both earned a trip to regionals for the pole vault and 200m. The winter sports winning culture legacy continued this year for Austin Prep!

On December 14 and 15th, the Austin community celebrated their annual production of The Nutcracker. The Nutcracker tells the story of a young girl, Clara, played by Emma Losolfo and Mia Karoub, and her Nutcracker, played by Josh Azor and Jonathan Whooley. A lot of hard w ork was put into the show: rehearsals started in September and continued throughout the weeks leading up to the show. Both performances played to full houses, and senior Caroline Plante remembered, “This year’s Nutcracker was absolutely magnificent. could not have been happier to be a part of a production as beautiful as the Austin Nutcracker. Ms. Chapman’s (Middle School) and Mr. Williams’ (Upper School) advisories were awarded first place in the Door Decorating competition this year! Ms Chapman and her advisees created a door with a twist: the theme was an elf, but the head was placed at the window with the heading “Take an Elfie.” Ms. Chapman noted, “I think what made our door unique was that it was fun and witty! Other students were able to get their picture taken as the elf so it made the door exciting to be a part of.” Mr. Williams’ advisory created an interactive door as well. Mr. Williams explained, “We decided on the theme of the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, and we combined Halloween and Christmas elements... We tied the two doors together with a big display on the wall featuring Jack on the mountain top in front of the moon from the movie poster, Christmas lights, and a bow] of candy students could take from.” Both advisories received a $30 Bagel World gg card for their distinctive displays.

All Roads Lead to Rome

The Austin Prep Choir had the incredible opportunity to sing for the Pope in Vatican City this holiday season. From December 27th, into the new year on January 3rd, students and teachers got to experience the Christmas spirit in Rome. Their haré work leading up to this spectacular event definitely paid off. In addition to their performance, they spent their days touring the beautiful city. Visiting sites like the Roman Forum, Victor Emmanuel II Monument, the Arch of Constantine, and of course, Hh the Coliseum. Students also had the unforgettable oppurtunity of meeting the Pope during their trip which was a, “once in a lifetime experience,” said sophomore Miranda Bianchi. Despite not having a blanket of snow, Rome’s architecture and natural beauty were absolutely breathtaking. Chorus member Livia Souza said, “It’s definitely a trip that yy) will always keep close to my heart.” After their performance, they left Rome with extraordinary memories and the Austin Prep spirit behind.

Honoring Our Veterans

The Austin Prep Day of Service took place on Thursday, February 13th. This year, the event was dedicated to supporting veterans of our armed forces. Students took the time to reflect on their service while making cards, gift baskets, and banners. Guest speaker Ryan Casavant, a Veteran Outreach Coordinator for the Homebase Program and veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, spoke with students about “the challenges the military veterans sometimes face when returning to civilian life.” Many students thought Service Day was a major success, like sophomore Jack lannibelli. Jack commented, “Service Day was a great day to reflect on how lucky we are as a community to have someone protect and serve our country.” All in all, the Day of Service really helped the Austin prep community come together in the spirit of caritas to support a good cause.

Winners train, losers complain

In the winter, the Girls Basketball team gave it everything they had to meet their goal of competing in the playoffs. They started the season with a huge win against Cardinal Spellman, thanks to a game-winning three-pointer by sophomore Nyree Kourkounian. On top of that, they had another big game win against Arlington Catholic at home. The team did extremely well this year using their skills and strengths, as senior Cat Bravo noted, “Our biggest strengths are definitely our speed and shooting. We do a great job pushing the ball up the floor for a fast break and we can really light it up from the three-point line.” The girls had an impressive season overall, finishing with a record of 11-9. They won their first game in playoffs against Manchester Essex, 69-58, which was a big accomplishment for them after all the hard work they had put into the season.

«” allows us to become a cohesive unit.” There = is no doubt that these girls had a special ‘connection with each other. “One thing that I want to remember about this season »*and the girls on this squad is how hard everyone on the team has worked. Everyone puts in work at practice and really cares about the team which makes it so special,” said captain Jenna Cobb. At the end of the season, Jenna commented, “We did bd extremely well at all of the basketball games and it’s hard to see the season end.” There was nothing but positive vibes coming from the cheer squad, and for good reason as they cheered on the winning basketball team!

The 2020 Girls Varsity Hockey Team had a tremendous year with a record of 22-1-2. They started off a little anxious to see what this season would bring, after losing in double overtime in the 2019 state championship. But they have always been a team with grit and dedication to the sport they love so much. Senior Eryn Taber had her take on how she thought the season was going a few weeks in: “I think the season is going well and we adjusted to the large amount of people that we lost very quickly, and became very close in a short amount of time which contributes significantly to our performance on the ice.” Like any other team, the girls continuously faced challenges. “Some challenges we have faced are taking teams we have played too easily. As a whole we have played down to teams in the past and have been forced to come back two times harder. We have to understand that every team that plays us is going to go 110% against us and we need to have faith in each other,” commented senior Maddie Rinklin. There are many factors that contributed to the great success of the team, senior Frankie Frelick added, “Each team member pushes one another to work harder, creating competitive practices which roll over to games.” Many positive words could be used to describe the team. “If 1 could use one word to describe our team it would be goal-oriented because we are always striving to do our absolute best with the intention to complete our overall goal: winning the state championship,” said senior Felicia Zuccola. The girls were able to finish off the season as DI co-champions, due to the cancellation of the final game because of Coronavirus concerns. Although it wasn’t how they planned to end, the girls were still able to reach their goal: to be state champions!

The Austin Prep boys varsity hockey team took every opportunity to make their 2019-2020 season the best it could be, and succeeded in doing so. Led by two enthusiastic coaches, the team was able to work together as a whole on the rink. One player commented, “I look forward to the friendships I will gain from this season. My hockey team is my second family to me and the time together at the rink, pasta parties, and inside the locker room are memories will cherish for the rest of my life.” The bond these boys share is like no other, and their love for hockey and ambitious goals led them to an impressive 10-7-4 season record. They enjoyed many sweet victories, like beating Hingham and Central Catholic, along with a few bitter losses, like losing the first game of the season. The Cele co-champs, however, focused on the y . bi successes and kept looking ahead. Their teh Yg winning culture took them all the way to be the D1 North Quarterfinal, and six players

“The competition and the atmosphere in the field house brought up the intensity level that and most kids don’t experience too often.” Chris Roselli '20 was describing the Dartmouth Relays, a huge annual meet where teams from different states come together to compete.

Ordinarily, it's the team's biggest meet of the season, and the girls placed an impressive tenth overall. But this year their athletic ability and team chemistry was exceptional. “Every athlete on the team improves on their own throughout the season due to the fact that our workouts challenge us more and more,” senior Emily Hickey commented. Everyone on the team supported one another day in and day out. Still, they had to overcome the challenge of their season starting late, giving them less time to prepare. But on February 16th, they did just that as the girls won their first ever D5 Indoor Track & Field Championship! Led by Lauren Sabone's victories in three events--the 55 m, 300m, and 4x200 relay--the team scored a whopping 51 points.

Sablone ran the 4x200 relay with three other seniors; Jenna Albanese, Emily Hickey, and Olivia Caruso; to break the meet record with a time of 1:46.67.

Outstanding performances by Albanese (2nd) and Emily Hickey (4th) in the long jump also boosted the team. Sablone, whose time in the 300 was a personal best (39.86), said, “I’Il most miss the togetherness of the team and they way they bring out the best version of myself.”

The spring of 2020 was truly unprecedented. In December of 2019, no one was prepared for what was in store for them in the coming months. As 2020 unraveled, the Coronavirus, initially compared to the flu, grew in magnitude and severity until it was added to the "Largest andemics in Modern History" list. Coronavirus, or COVID-19, had originated in Wuhan, China but slowly migrated around the world and to the United States. Seemingly overnight, hundreds and mid-March, self-isolation was the standard: it seemed as though the world had been put on pause. Workplaces and schools shut down, student-athletes wondered if there would be a shortened season--or one at all--and seniors wondered if any of the traditional spring events would be possible. The Austin Prep community adapted quickly with online classes and advisories. Masses were live-streamed from the chapel, Midweek Updates were filmed and shared, and clubs eventually continued their normal schedules. Performances like The Senior Showcase and Virtual Art Show celebrated artists of every discipline. Most importantly, an outdoor Baccalaureate Mass in celebration of the Class of 2020 was held for students, parents and staff, and broadcasted for the whole community to watch live.Despite the challenging circumstances and cancellation of spring sports, it was a rich season at AP and our seniors were still able to graduate as traditionally as possible.

The student quotes on these pages come from members of the Austin Prep Yearbook Staff.

“Administra

spring season for high school sports in Massachusetts.

As state-wide work began to create a new spring season schedule, Austin Prep student-athletes and coaches embarked on their own journey. Despite the separation from the physical campus and fields, fellow teammates and coaches were not going to allow the pandemic to stand in the way of getting ready for the Spring season! Filled with optimism, they created new ways to come together as a TEAM! Suddenly, Zoom and Google Classrooms were the new team meeting “places”. Our student-athletes participated in virtual team workouts and practiced from home to stay in shape. Coaches provided safe “social distancing” sports specific activities, wall ball for lacrosse, running challenges for tfack, soft toss drills for baseball to name a few. ”®

Unfortunately after a few weeks the COVID-19 pandemic was not “leveling” and state-wide school closures were extended. Ultimately, on April 24th, Governor Charlie Baker announced that school — buildings across the state would be‘elosed through the end of June, and any hopes of conducting an ofRl sari sports season were diminished. (a

_ For our spring season students-athletes, coaches, families and fans, the months of March and April were a never-ending cycle of anxiety, uncertainty, hope and despair. In the end, it was a season unlike any other. This experience was a shared struggle that built a stronger bond among student-athletes and coaches.

This was the first senior class unable to enjoy the last chapter in their journey as student-athletes, but rather the Class of 2020 led the way for the entire student body. They will be forever remembered for the shared struggle that they had to endure and overcome. It was a clear demonstration of our mission and tradition of Unitas, a community of ONE. - Patrick Priscalle Athletic Director

Baccalaureate Mass for the Class of 2020

On May 29th, after a spring full of disappointments related to COVID-19 closures and cancellations, the Austin Prep Class of 2020 enjoyed anopportunity that few graduates in the state--or in the whole country--had this year: to celebrate their graduation in person with family and friends. Once —— Massachusetts relaxed restrictions on religious services, Headmaster Dr. James \ Hickey was able to secure the necessary state and local permissions to hold a combination Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation ceremony outdoors on Father =) Seymour Field. Despite the unusual setting, social distancing and sanitation precautions, the celebration was a beautiful and quintessentially Austin event. Bishop Mark O’Connell led the Mass, and encouraged graduates to be seekers and leaders in his homily when he declared, “You will engage, you will speak u and Se will hear phesruth, ” Dr. Hickey reiterated the optimistic forecast gre rise to the moment: “I have complete confidence not let these times define ae You will ue these A T spa ey sh

Instead of seeing our ending as a sad one, I choose to see it as a cliffhanger. Our stories are not over yet.” At the conclusion of the Mass, all 154 graduates walked the stage to receive their diplomas. Without a doubt, it was a cherished opportunity for students and families to come together and celebrate this important milestone.
