The Glass of 2018 proudly dedicates this book to Mar. Andrew

The Seniors of the Class of 2018 would like to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Andrew Reusch of the Theology Department. Through his teaching, Mr. Reusch challenges his students to expand their minds and look beyond their own views. He helps them better understand the teaching of the Church with regard to the compex topics of morallity and current societal challenges. Mr. Reusch constantly invites his students to question their world through the discussion of what it means to be a morally and socially responsible Christian.
Outside the classroom, Mr. Reusch is active in many school-related activities. Charlie Pound, a sixth grader on Mr. Reusch's middle school soccer team, describes him as a “chill,” understanding coach, who has made the team a strong unit: “He taught some of us how to play soccer, and he helped all of us improve.” According to Charlie, Mr. Reusch does more than just coach soccer: he also teaches his players important life lessons about "how to be loyal, fair, good winners, and good losers.” In addition to coaching, Mr. Reusch participated in a service trip to Peru and is the moderator for the New England Club. About his experience in the club, senior Mitch Kennedy recalls, "He helped us discover something we could've never hoped to find ourselves. A true nature man, he showed us the beauty beyond our normal lives and guided us on adventures that we will never forget."
The seniors would like to express their thanks to Mr. Reusch for all of his contributions to the Austin community. As a relatable teacher with his students’ best interests at heart, he consistently serves as an example of how to live out our Augustinian core values of unitas, caritas, and veritas. The Class of 2018 could not be more proud to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Reusch!

The Class of 2018 comes to Austin Prep from nearby towns in the Greater Boston area, to as far away as east Asia. No matter how near or far your home, we are all connected through this wonderful school. By senior year, students feel like the Austin Prep community is a second family. You are guaranteed to leave AP with lasting friendships and memories that will stick with you forever. Nothing can replace the long, frigid nights standing in the bleachers supporting your Cougars, or the many masses, student summits, performances and other school gatherings we shared.
Senior Anda Wang, who came to AP from Zhengzhou, China, remembers his first year at Austin: "I knew few things about schools in the US [and] was confused how students transitioned from one classroom to another, because in China, students stay in the same classroom for the Mevewemey whole day. I could not understand what the teachers were talking about about Sire because I was not good at English at that time... and I had difficulties TONS talking to other kids." But, by the end of his time at Austin, Anda felt like part of the community. He recalls how teachers and students reached out to him: "Ms. Maurand invited me to the acoustic music band, and it was a great experience. I got to know some people down there." Anda has also enjoyed participating in events and outings for international students, such as weekend trips to museums.
In an increasingly interconnected world, the chance to learn about and appreciate other cultures firsthand is invaluable. As you head out into the world, Class of 2018, continue to live your Austin values: seek to inquire,
find opportunities to unite, and remember your responsibility to serve others.
International students, from China and around east Asia, make Austin Prep their home away from home.

Seniors from around Massachusetts and New Hampshire are connected through their experience at Austin Prep.

Members of the Class of 2018, and now, Fellow Austin Alumni,
I am very fortunate to be able to say that I have had a friend for fifty years. His name is Dan Kelly, and we met _freshman year at Austin Prep. It is hard to say how and when friendships take root. But I can say with certainty that this one had a lot to do with shared experience. Dan and I had quite a bit of that and I suspect the evolution of our friendship will sound familiar to you.
I came a long way from home to go to high school. Thirteen whole miles. For a freshman that might as well have been a hundred. Most kids in my Lawrence neighborhood went to the city high school or the local Catholic school. I opted for the more regional school with the longer ride, just like you did! While at Austin, Dan and I shared dozens of hours of math, science, history, religion, English and language classes. And dozens more again on practice and game fields of the sports we played together. I stayed at his house with his family, and he came to mine.
The boundaries of Reading soon gave way to Woburn, then to Somerville and to Medford because that is where Dave, Mac, Tom, Tony, Murph and Dennis lived. Those boundaries gave way to Boston because that is where the Red Sox and Celtics played and where BC played Holy Cross and BU played Harvard. Maybe we should apply! How did we figure out where to go? Driving certainly made the broadening horizons easier to reach. Had to call home to plead for an extra half hour or so past curfew to get home more often than I care to remember. My neighborhood just got bigger and bigger each year I spent at Austin.
I went to college in Worcester and Dan in Amherst, and, of course, we found time to meet in each of these places too. Now he is in San Diego and I’m in Reading and time and distance don’t seem to matter.
I suspect some of this story sounds familiar to you. I have watched the roots of this experience get planted every year of the forty-five that I have spent teaching at Austin. All of us took a chance going to high school “far away from home. Somewhere among your classmates - among the graduates of the Class of 2018 - is your friend for fifty years. We are blessed.
Sincerely,
Mr. Dowd Dean of the Class of 2018

In the final few months of high school, the memories are always bittersweet. Final sports games, whether played or attended, the last pep rally, the Disney Trip, and many more experiences are all fun in the moment. The Class of 2018 made their mark on Austin Prep during their senior year and set in place a model of academic excellence and enormous school spirit. May these photos be a reminder of who you were then and the people who shaped that.

Junior year, despite being the hardest academically (and most stressful in the dawn of college applications), proved amazing for the class of 2018. Traveling to New York City, Prom, Powderpuff and more, made this year one for the memory books. New friendships were made and old ones remained strong. And throughout these trips and adventures, the comrarderie grew within the class.

Their second year at Austin was a memorable one for the Class of 2018. As sophomores, school spirit prevailed through football games, more pep rallies, and the string of "sweet sixteen" parties. Decked out in white and various spirit week costumes, these sophomores made the most of an academically challenging year.

"My experience at Austin Prep has been different than a student who was not here the whole seven years. I experienced a new opportunity at each age at Austin. As a sixth grader, I remember being nervous around the high school students. As a senior, seeing the younger kids allows me to realize how seven pivotal years at this school changed me for the better."
-Joshua Bartinicki, '18

Class of 2019,
Congratulations on completing your junior year of high school! You are no longer the new students you were in the Fall of 2015, and you are about to become the leaders of our community next year. It is often said that your 11th grade year is one of the most important and it can certainly be one of the most stressful because of schoolwork, clubs, sports, jobs, other commitments, and the looming college application process. You have begun to realize that life, as Dr. Seuss puts it, is a "Great Balancing Act".
While the deadlines and hard work will not come to end, your time at Austin soon will. If we have one piece of advice, it is not to waste the time you have left. Next year, your senior year, is the last time life will be like this. It is the last time your friend groups will be here, together every day. It is the last time you will walk the halls of Austin Prep. It is the only time you will be seniors in high school. It will be filled with work, it will be frustrating, it will be unique, it will be filled with accomplishments and adversity, but it will be filled with fun times and laughter, and it will go by fast. Please enjoy it and take every opportunity to make it the best year for yourself, your classmates, and all the underclassmen who will look up to you.
Best wishes,
Mr.

Matthew Diapella '88

Dear Sophomores,
Congratulations on making it halfway through your high school years at Austin. We hope you | have formed strong friendships that will help motivate you, support you, and encourage you as you enter into the more challenging upperclassmen years. While classes may get more difficult _ and college will now be on your horizon, we have seen you grow in confidence and ability during | this past year so we know you will rise to meet the challenge. Remember though, junior year is : not just about challenging yourself and performing to the best of your ability; it is also about | having more responsibility as younger students start to look up to you, and more freedom to seek ) out the things that truly interest you. Through it all - challenge and opportunity - draw upon those | friendships to find the deepest fulfillment.
‘\ All our best,

Mr. Peter DeLuca

Dear Freshmen,
One hundred eighty-three school days ago you walked into your first day as a freshman in high school. This was the first day you interacted with many of the people that will be cheering you on in three short years as you walk across the stage and receive your Austin Prep diploma.
You have survived freshman biology class, you pushed your creative boundaries in art, music, and 4 acting class, and you elected your first leaders of student council. You have taken countless tests ‘and quizzes and worked on more group projects than you can count. And in these moments, your teachers have instilled in you the qualities of a strong leader, listener, writer, and performer.
| While you may not remember the parts of a plant cell years from now, you will remember the / relationships you have formed, the sports games you attended, and the crazy pink tutu you bought for Spirit Week. If you have not taken the opportunity to be involved in these types of activities, I ‘urge you to take advantage of all of these moments as you continue your Austin journey.
|I guarantee that you are not the same person you were 183 school days ago, and three years from / now, you will be a different person than you are today. Keep working hard, take every chance you ‘can to form strong bonds with your peers and teachers, and never give up because as Christopher 1 Robin said, “You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

Class of 2022,
It seems like only yesterday that we began our Journey at Austin Prep together-- several of you as new sixth graders and me as the new Head of Middle School. Each year your class grew, adding new scholars, artists, athletes, and leaders. Throughout your time in Middle School, you took risks; and it was in the process of stretching yourself by trying different activities and classes, meeting friends, and learning from both your accomplishments and adversity that you grew.
You were a part of tremendous change these past few years. During your Middle School Journey, Austin Prep introduced Mandarin, participated in the Middle School State Drama Festival, created electives in Art and Design, expanded club offerings, promoted student leadership with Student Council, began new traditions, and celebrated 30 years of Middle School and 25 years of co-education.
As you transition into Upper School, I hope you take with you your sense of adventure. Find opportunities to explore and try new things: a class, sport, or service experience that you haven't explored before. You'll be amazed at what you can learn about yourself by availing yourself of chances to go beyond yourself. Part of the spirit of adventure is being open to new people. Listen to other perspectives and viewpoints; this will also help others to be better listeners to your ideas.
Iam proud of the young women and men you have become and look forward to watching your continued Journey at Austin Prep!
All the Best,
Mr. McLaughlin, Head of Middle School

Dear Seventh Grade,
Congratulations on reaching the end of the seventh grade. It has been a remarkable year, full of learning and adventure. You challenged yourselves, and each other, to do your best every day. There may have been difficult moments along the way and challenges that seemed insurmountable, but we have seen you rise to the occasion and do things that maybe you never thought possible.
Each choice, decision, action you make has a direct effect not only on your life, but the lives of people around you. Whether it is holding the door open for someone with their hands full, giving directions to a classroom or inviting a new student to each lunch with you, your life is full of moments that shape your character.
This year, we have seen you all grow into young men and women of exemplary character; young men and women we are proud to teach. As you move on to 8th grade, you have the chance now to take greater leaps and bigger chances. Keep being curious about the world around you, strengthen those bonds of friendship with your classmates and always keep doing your best. It has been a pleasure to be your teachers this year and we can't wait to see what you do next.
Best,
Mr. Bordua |. {

Dear Sixth Graders,
Can you believe you’ ve finally finished your first year here at Austin Prep? Do you remember when you walked in those doors wondering if you had all the pieces of your big binder with you? We know that you were scared but that didn’t last long, because you adjusted together. We bet you didn’t even notice because it was a tiny little bit every single day.
Look how far you’ve come. Most of you went from one elementary school classroom where you spent your whole day being carefully looked after by a single teacher, to a school that seemed so large. Here, you had to seek out a new room for every class. Wasn’t it silly of us to hide the art room from you in a separate wing? Now you are pros, zipping through packs of seniors to get to your classes.
You learned to bond and play together at Project Adventure, and found lasting friends by talking face to face in the dining hall rather than playing with your iPads. So many people have commented on how you all, as a group, are kind to one another and go out of your way to include every student. Stay that way!
Academically, you have met the challenge of managing your time to complete all of your assignments, you have begun employing note-taking skills, and have even tackled new languages. In 7th grade, we know you will learn to use your iPads as tools not toys! We have faith in you!
We can’t express how much fun we have had teaching you this year. We love you, and are so proud of the people you are. Don’t forget to carry that kind spirit with you all the way through middle school and beyond. We can’t wait to see where your Austin journey will take you, and we all smile when we imagine you finally shaking the headmaster’s hand as you take your diploma. We will be cheering for you.
Best,

Ms. Blais #

The fall season was a stellar display of the athletic talent at Austin. Nearly all teams placed in the CCL division while Cheerleading, Girls Cross Country, and Golf were recognized as League Champions. One member of the cheerleading team states, “T wasn't expecting to win so when they announced our name everybody was screaming because they were so happy." Cross country's win was the first in 13 years: “It felt good winning the CCL champs and we haven't won in 13 years, so it felt nice to win. We were all so happy and proud of each other." In addition to these Varsity CCL titles, the JV volleyball team showed superb performance with an undefeated record.
Beyond sports, the fall was an active season for campus ministry, the drama club and other clubs and activities around the school. Convocation Mass went off without a hitch to ring in the new school year, and the 6th, 9th and 12th graders took to the trees for Project Adventure. The Friends of Rachel club hosted their annual Halloween parade in Meelia Hall, and students embarked on several different service trips along the North Shore. The Drama Guild performed the play, “I Saw Myself Running: A Night of Radio,” a new type of performance for the actors here at Austin. Closing out the fall season was Spirit Week, which included themed dress down days, the senior vs. teacher dodgeball game, and finally the pep rally. Each grade dressed in their class colors and members of fall sports participated in small competitions. It was a huge success, and really united our community.

On Friday, September 15th, the Austin Prep Community gathered together for the annual Convocation Mass, led by Fr. Patrick Armano. Dr. Hickey announced the theme of this year: advancing excellence, in honor of the school celebrating 25 years of coeducation.

On November 9th, Austin Prep held its 3rd annual Day of Service, in honor of St. Augustine's birthday. This year Jonathan Ronzio, who founded Explore Inspired, came to speak. He talked all about his journey traveling from Argentina to Alaska, volunteering in every country along the way. Afterwards, students set off on their own service projects. His presentation was a great way to inspire the students for the day ahead.

When the 9th graders headed to Project Adventure for the day, freshman TJ Dysart was initially skeptical, "I remember how weird it was when we first got there, playing all the games and exercises." However, by the time the day was over, TJ had changed his mind about Project Adventure,"Nobody wanted to leave; it was definitely a place I would go again." The 9th grade trip to Project Adventure is an annual event at Austin Prep, one that is meant to introduce students and encourage teamwork within the grade, a goal TJ felt was successfully achieved. "It was definitely a great bonding and trusting experience. I really thought it did a great job bringing the new kids together."

New friends are made at Project Adventure, a place that prides itself in helping to foster teambuilding Skills.

Christopher Aldrich, the new drama teacher, brought a unique perspective to the Austin Fall Drama this November. "I Saw Myself Running" was an original live-action production of two famous radio plays broadcasted during the 1930's. Between the "episodes" of each radio drama, soloists like Isabella Totino and Deana Geomeles serenaded the crowd with some vintage ballads.
One of the two radio plays performed by the Austin Drama Guild was an intricate psychological thriller that told the story of a woman with intense nightmares. Starring Aingea Venuto and Conor Long, “I Saw Myself Running” details the nightly terrors of a woman named Susan and her husband’s refusal to take her disturbances seriously. Nothing could be more terrifying than seeing yourself running from the unknown and becoming trapped in this dream world forever. The simple staging of the Black Box theater created an intimate environment perfect for this intense drama. Aingea states, “because we were closer to the audience and actors were placed between guests, the show would not have been as successful had it been performed on the regular stage”. This segment of the show was an outstanding part of an extraordinary performance by all involved.
Who Did it?
All they wanted was "The Duck’, but what they got,

On November 20th, the juniors took on the seniors in the annual Powder Puff game. The cold didn't stop the Austin community from filling the stands to watch the exciting faceoff. While the junior girls made a commendable effort, the seniors’ immense athleticism proved too much: the seniors won in a complete blowout, 20-0. Senior Gwen Amico says, "We came in confident, having won last year. The seniors should always win, ities, and thats exactly what we did."

injuries, the Austin Prep Varsity Cheer team claimed their fourth CCL title. "We had many injuries and had to change our routine twice, but we knew we could pull it off," says captain Haley Sharp. Before going on the floor for CCL's, Rachel Havey, the other captain, told her teammates, "the only team that will beat you, is you." After a stellar routine, the girls not only won the CCL's, but they advanced to regionals.
Austin's Varsity Program once again made the playoffs, for the fourth consecutive year. "| thought [the Nutcracker] was spectacular. The dancers were on point."

Winter at Austin is a time of tradition. It is when we gather for many of our most beloved events. The Blue Mass, Door Decorating, Lessons and Carols, and the Nutcracker all present us with the unique opportunity to come together as a community to experience the most festive time of year. One event in particular draws crowds year after year, and for many has become a favorite tradition. Jenna Denker is a sophomore at Austin Prep, and for her and her family, Austin’s production of The Nutcracker remains an important part of their holiday season. “My whole family has gone three years in a row.” For Jenna, the show is a must-see event: “We make sure not to miss it. The show gets me in the Christmas spirit.” Jenna says that the show is always really well put together, but it's the dancers who truly make it special: "I thought it was spectacular. The dancers were on point." The Nutcracker remains a prime example of Austin tradition, which so many are proud to be a part of.
Austin's athletic teams also had an incredible season this winter. The swim team won CCL's for the fifth year in a row, and the girls hockey team has continued to be exceptional, with an undefeated record. The indoor track team also won the TCL Championship, and the boys basketball and hockey teams continue in the MIAA State Tournaments. Mr. Sport, the Dean of Students, remarked, "Historically, Austin has excelled at winter athletics, and this season has been no different. Teams have been competitive across the board, and league powerhouses in certain sports." The quality of winter athletics at Austin continues to impress: good luck in playoffs!

As part of the Austin senior tradition, the Class of 2018 took a trip to Disney World, November 29th through December 3rd, 2017. The experience gave students a unique opportunity to bond before they graduate. Matt Deroche remembers, "I had the best time ever, and I'm glad I had one last trip with my friends before we leave for college and go our separate ways."

On December 12th, the Austin Prep community gathered together for the annual Lessons and Carols performance. It was a marvelous night, filled with readings and wonderful music performed by Austin's band and chorus. Mrs. Theriault remarked, "Lessons and Carols is a beautiful way to remember the true reason for the season. I think it is a wonderful treat that we | stop and take time to enjoy this beautiful Austin tradition." Lessons and Carols always brings the Austin community closer together.

On December 8th, 2017, Austin Prep held its 2nd annual Blue Mass. The Blue Mass is held to honor the sacrifices made by the men and women of our police and fire departments every day. Dr. Hickey concluded the ceremony by quoting St. Francis, " 'At the end of our time on this earth, we can take nothing we have received with us'no money, no possessions. But we can take what we give: love and sacrifice and the men and women of blue exemplify that every day. We would do well by following their lead."

These four women were incredibly brave and did not hesitate to speak out against the injustice they experienced during their lives. They stand as important examples for courage, peace, and activism.

The Stoneman Douglas shooting was a tragic moment in history. Seventeen lives were lost on Valentine's Day 2018, and many families are broken forever. Austin Prep decided to take a stand, so we held a mass honoring the students and teachers who died. After the ceremony, many also participated in a "walkout" or protest of sorts to demand action by legislators. Additionally, the 8th graders who traveled to D.C. brought a signed petition for stricter gun laws to the White House. Austin Prep students also signed a banner to show support for the survivors of the shooting, which was sent to the high school in Florida.

On January 8th, 2018, The girls varsity hockey team played against Billerica HS, a tough competition. The first time AP played Billerica, the team managed to pull out a 1-1 tie in the final seconds of the game. Remembering that game, Maddie Rinklin '20 encouraged her team: "They are going to come out on fire this game. We didn't play to our potential and didn' t work hard last time we played them and pulled off a tie. This game we need to leave it all out there. We need to work as hard as we can from the first step on the ice." The girls went on to win the game, maintaining an undefeated record. Throughout the season, their hard work and dedication paid off: they are CCL champions again. The girls have an uncommon chemistry, and this ability to connect and work together effectively ‘supported through an impressive playoff run as well. They nude the Austin community proud by advancing all the way to the D1 State Semi Final fateh: before finally falling to Woburn, 2-1, ina third period power play §goal.

whether we win
-Matt Sacco, '18

On December 28, the hockey team played one of their biggest rivals, Malden Catholic. Rising above the tough competition, AP started the game strong with JJ Harding scoring the first goal early in the first period. The team widened their lead and allowed Malden Catholic to score only once, coming out on top with a 5-1 victory. Harding said, "Heading into this game we knew it was going to be a battle, because Malden Catholic has always been one of our biggest rivalries. We pulled out with a big win, and I couldn't be more proud of my team." The boys capped a successful season by winning CCL's and qualifying for States.

When the players of the basketball or hockey team hear the cheerleaders rooting for them, it encourages them, makes a difference in their performance, and adds to their success. Captain Haley Sharp remembers, “Cheering on the sidelines is one of the best experiences I have had in high school. Leading the school in chants and cheering on the success of the basketball team is my favorite way to spend : my weekends." Payton Ditchfiled, the other captain of the team states, “Cheering at both the hockey and basketball games has been a great experience. Having two teams to root for and being part of two different crowds is so fun!” Thank you, cheer team, for all your hard work and support! p

The Dance Team at Austin Prep has had great success since the team was established in 2014, under the leadership of coach Colleen Robertson. In the past four seasons, the team has placed within the top three in both the Massachusetts State and New England Regional Competitions. On March 5, Austin Prep traveled to Framingham High School for the 2018 state competition. In previous years, Burncoat High School has dominated the competitive field in Massachusetts. But this year, the AP girls put on an amazing performance and received the highest score in Austin history. Falling only 3.2 points behind Burncoat, the Dance Team placed second in the state, moving onto the New England Championship and receiving a bid to Nationals in Orlando, Florida. As Captain Alana Vounessea put it, "We are out for blood this year." Although, she also added, "My goal this year is not just winning, it is to become a stronger team that enjoys their time together. What is the point of winning if you aren't having fun?" ‘This year's team was successful on both accounts, capping a successful season with another great performance at the selecive New England Championship, where they placed sixth.

For the 2018 season, Dance team decided to follow an old to new school theme, featuring iconic hits from Run-D.M.C and Tupac Shakur to Ludacris and Zay Hilifigerr (the rather unknown artist of the popular "Juju on That Beat" song). Even the costumes featured elements of new and old hip-hop attire: red bomber jackets, high-top converse, and old-school gym socks tied together the classic jams to modern music.

As the end of the school year approaches, students often reflect on their past seasons and their academic performance. Seniors spend their last few months of high school in a state of anticipation for the future. For many, it is also their last time competing on an Austin Prep sports team. Whether a student has been on the team for seven years, Or four years, or just started this season, the end of high school athletic careers can be heartbreaking. Senior Rachel Havey says, “This season is bittersweet because it went by so fast. Seniors always tell you that it flies by, and it really does. I wish I had another year on the [softball] team.”
With a number of spring sports teams, there is a place for everyone. Senior Miguel Canizalez, who is member of the Outdoor Track and Field team, reflects on his experience over three years: “This team has been my family since I came to Austin Prep. We are so supportive of each other on and off the track. Even when we have to run extremely rigorous workouts, like the four by mile, I can always rely on my teammates to put a smile on my face. I will miss them all so much next year!”
Besides sports, students have many other events to look forward to in the spring. Sophomores, juniors and seniors anxiously await their National Honor Society acceptances. Students involved in the arts have upcoming shows and performances. Many talented student artists will have their works displayed in the Spring Art Show on April 12th. The Drama Club has a production of The Secret Garden on May 4th and 5th. Lastly, the Dance Club has a broadway-themed show, called Song and
Dance on May 12th. Of course for seniors, spring is an especially exciting time. Prom and graduation are around the corner, and and college acceptance letters flood into mailboxes and inboxes— seniors are
deciding how they will spend the next few years of their lives.

Going undefeated in the 2017 regular season and fighting their way to the D3 North Finals, the girls made it farther into the playoffs than any other Austin Girls Tennis team before. Coach Collins says, "Last year was my sixth year coaching the tennis team and we have won the CCL all six years! I was ecstatic to win the CCL again, but making it to the finals was totally unexpected." The team welcomed seven new players to the team in 2017, including three freshman starters: Jenna Costello, Mia Han, and Olivia Caruso. Captain Silvanna Salines expressed her excitement about last season adding, "Last year was definitely my favorite year on the team. Adding three new, talented players to the starting lineup definitely gave us an edge against some of our biggest rivals who we lost to in the past, but were able to defeat last season." The team aims to build on last year's success for another deep playoff run this year.

When asked what she found o be he most enjoyable part of yearbook, Editor Haley Sharp remarked, "It has been fun getting to be behind the scenes. While doing the superlatives, we got to see what our classmates thought of each other."
Junior Editor Gwen Amico said, "Everyone wants to see our progress and they love seeing the sneak peaks we give them."
Both also gave insight as to what having a big responsibility in the class is like. Haley said, "The process has been rewarding but at times stressful. As editor it is my resposibility to ensure there are no errors. I am very careful about making sure everything is correct beacause I don't want someone's name to be misspelled or for them to be disappointed. " Gwen, who has he responsibility of being the head of design, agreed adding, "It has definitely been a timeconsuming class, especially with having to look at every design. But every member of the staff wants to do their best and make sure their next page is just as good as their last, which is extremely helpful."

When asked about her experience she stressed the joys of the class and her excitement for the final product: “I love the fact that we are able to make something for everyone to enjoy. This will be a physical documentation of the Austin Prep community, but especially of the seniors' years at Austin Prep. For me, being able to aid the seniors in remembering their most impactful years of life is the most rewarding part of this experience.”

This year Austin Prep sponsored international trips to both Panama and Costa Rica. The Panama trip focused on service activities such as painting schools, tiling buildings, and planting a garden. Mr. Benning noted that the trip was a "positive experience" and that he himself "enjoyed the volunteer work." The Costa Rica trip was focused on giving students a new first- hand perspective on how people in Costa Rica live while visiting many landmarks and churches. Mr. Bordua described the trip as, "a fun experience while learning about the country and culture." In Costa Rica, students also stayed with host families. Students reported enjoying the trips and ‘4 encourage Austin to make similiar experiences possible in the future.

Mr. McLaughlin recalls,"The Class of 2022 bonded during their Class Trip to Washington, D.C. - exploring museums, visiting monuments, and witnessing our democratic heritage in action."

This March, Austin Prep made its annual eighth grade trip to Washington, D.C., and junior class trip to New York City. The students visited many historical sites and enjoyed traveling with their classmates. These amazing opportunities gave students a fun and handson learning experience.
"We left early, very early (5 AM) on a Friday morning. Our bus ride was long and our days in the city were as well; we also probably didn’t get enough sleep. But we saw much: the UN, The World Trade museum, Ellis Island, the Top of the Rock, Times Square, and we took in a Broadway show. Most importantly, members of the junior class were able to bond and create memories that they would not have been able to do without the trip.”

On April 6, Austin Prep hosted the second annual Austie Awards. The show began with a dance performance that presented Mr. Taylor and Mrs. Foster as the hosts at the end, who then began their stand-up comedy routine. With a night filled with laughter, awards and nostalgia, the Austin Prep community came together to enjoy the performances and the comedy skits with some of the faculty.
apoye: Caroline Russell '18, Bridget Kelley'18, Caroline Catherine Mawn '20 remarked about the experience saying, "My favorite part was Sablone'18, Catherine Mawn '20 the performances and the energy throughout the night. Everybody was so energetic and happy, it was just a good atmosphere." The Austies followed the structure of the Oscars with clips from the each nominee’s video in that category. Then, faculty members opened envelopes to reveal each winner in the categories. Before and after the award ceremony, there was a red carpet to take pictures with the winners and interview those who attended.

The Spring Art Show on April 12th was a big hit at Austin Prep: it was the first of its kind to incorporate a piece of artwork from every student who participated in a visual arts course this year. With over two hundred pieces on display, students showed off amazing artwork for others to enjoy. The wide range of work included drawings in graphite, charcoal, and pastel; watercolor illustrations; acrylic paintings; collages; graphic designs; mixed media pieces and even illustrated books. The Austin Prep community came together to view and celebrate students’ hard work and dedication to art this year. Senior Leslie

Costello, who took two art classes this year, recalls enjoying the show: "It was a really nice event, and everything was displayed well to show off all of the talented work. I had a great night, and got to see my friends who also enjoyed [viewing] the work. All the art was amazing, even the middle-schoolers': it was amazing to see how much talent these students have, regardless of age."

On April 27, 2018, the Austin Prep Seniors and Juniors traveled to Ipswitch Country Club for a beautiful night of elegance and class. Prior to boarding the buses, couples and groups processed through Meelia Hall in front of parents and faculty to showcase their dresses, tuxedos, and of course, their dates. The night continued at a gorgeous venue and every guest enjoyed dancing away one of the final nights of the school year, or in the case of the seniors, their entire high school careers.

On Thursday, June 3rd, the seniors were treated to a barbecue by the school as a sign of appreciation for their hardwork in the past four years. Both the teachers and the students spent their time outside listening to music, enjoying the food, playing games on the field, and getting their yearbooks signed.
School-wide Student Council
President Mitchell Kennedy noted, "The senior barbeque is a great way for all the seniors to have one last get together where they can share memories of their last four years as a class." The teachers enjoy this event just as much as the seniors because it is a time for them to say their farewells to their favorite and most memorable students. Mr. Brennan expressed his appreciation for the event saying, "It is heartwarming to see the bonds that the faculty and students have made with one another."

Many of the students at Austin Prep are very passionate for the annual Relay For Life Fundraiser. Relay for Life's purpose is to raise funds and awareness for the devastating disease, cancer. Most of us have either been affected by, or know someone who has been affected by, cancer, and it is important to come together as a community and fight as one. In the spirit of Unitas and to support the mission of Relay, Austin Prep students and faculty walked laps around the track and sold concessions to raise money. It is important to note that cancer never sleeps and neither do we! Austin Prep sophomore Jenna Costello is a student whose family has been touched by cancer, and who is very passionate about Relay For Life. Jenna commented, “Ever since I came to Austin, I hoped they would hold a Relay for life fundraiser here. When I found out they did, I was ecstatic! We are truly working together as one to make a change.”

Below: The entire emsamble, including the class of 2018, take their final bows.

Dancing to the theme one of the biggest movies of the year, The Greatest Showman, student dancers of all & ages and ability were able to show off their skills and hard work through dances they'd been preparing all semester. As a member of the audience at this wonderfiul event, sophomore Gena Rhodes commented "I thought the dance show was absolutely amazing! Every dance was perfectly practiced and poised. ‘The energy in the room was evident and you could tell the dancers were passionate about what they were doing." Under the leadership of the talented Mrs. Pascucci-Byrne and seniors Haley Sharp, Paige D'Ambrosio and Mackenzie Barrall; this very successful night was a great way to celebrate all the talent at Austin and bring the school year to a close with flair.

The 2018 Commencement ceremony began with a welcome from Chairman of the Board James Noga, and a Headmaster's address from Dr. Hickey. After this, Bridget Kelley gave an amazing and inspirational salutatorian speech, Following senior awards and medals, Caitlyn Leonard gave an impressive valedictorian speech. The event concluded with a wonderful commencement address from Barbara Marchetti, P'17, who is a member of the board of trustees, an internationally- renowned business strategist and public speaker.
