The class of 2003 dedicates this yearbook to Ms. Susan Vacanti.

We came to Austin together, and, seven years later, though we are moving on, we will never forget your joyful spirit and your smile.

As Austin burnt to a crisp like a marshmallow left in the fire too long, the Austin students huddled in the Multi-Purpose Facility (the gym for short), and stayed out of the burning maelstrom that was our former school. Here’s the pictures of that event (with top notch commentary).

Through the Years...

Sixth Grade (The Beginning)

We arrived at Austin Prep at that awkward phase of our lives, being ten and eleven years old, but we had to try to somehow act older; we weren’t fifth graders anymore. Our personalities were developing; we were the nice shy girl who dances, the kids that would play football outside in the mud, the kids who seemed much older and smarter than their age, and those that fit their age perfectly. We tried to break out of our elementary school shells and prepared to deal with kids from all over the state, when all of our old friends could have been contained in one room, in our town.

Austin Prep was going to be a radical change for us. The guys had to wear ties, and the girls could wear whatever they wanted. Fortunately, our teachers helped us through this strange transitional period, even though they themselves were strange. We were originally terrified by the dark warnings about all the insane teachers at Austin Prep, by those who seemed to have an edge on everyone else, by the inside information given by their older brothers and sisters. Our fears, instilled in us by the Flaherty, O’Neil, MacKenzie, and Acampa younger siblings, however, were proved false by how nice our teachers truly were. Mrs. DerSarkisian, in her first year at AP, became everyone’s mom. Mr. Quartertone not only taught three classes, he entertained us simply by being himself. And Ms. McDonough became everyone’s favorite, easily sidetracked by any mention of the Red Sox. The teachers would come to exemplify what Austin Prep was and is today, a little weird, sometimes frustrating, but inherently likeable.

venth Gra alvette discipuli!” “Salve magistra!

Once we had feared losing all our friends from home, and now we couldn’t imagine ourselves without our friends from AP. Instead of traveling across the street to visit our friends, we had to visit other towns, counties and sometimes, states, to get to our friends, costing our parents millions in gas. However, times are good.

School remained the same. The guys wore ties and the girls could wear whatever they wanted. Everyone fell in love with our new English teacher Ms. Pascucci, the guys for different reasons than the girls, and everyone was glad to know her. However, not withstanding Ms. Pascucci’s inherent popularity, there was another teacher whose impact was more widespread and inherently more comical.

We won’t mention this teacher by name, but those of you who were here know who she was, and this is by no means meant to demean her, in fact, without her, our class wouldn’t have come together as it did. Those of you who are lifers like myself will recognize this teacher immediately.

Think back to that time when we were just beginning our first foreign language, and that language was Latin, what anightmare! We had to worry about the masculine words staying in their own house while trying to keep the feminine words in their own quarters and then the crazy, apparently gender neutral neuter words, were seemingly living everywhere. Of course the best part of that class was that it was held in what could be referred to as a broom closet. A room that was so small, that we had to copy the notes off a projection on the ceiling, yet at the same time the room was large enough to contain all the laughter and oftentimes insane yelling, that brought the class together against absurd difficulty.

Eighth Grade (This is the Book o’ Stanley)

After our seventh grade year, it seemed we were finally ready to take charge of the junior school; it was our domain now, and we were the big fish in the pond. Of course this was the year of the much anticipated trip to Washington, D.C. An although there were many firsts in eighth grade, for instance the first time we all met Mr. Maradei, a teacher who introduced us to the true meaning of physical science, which apparently entailed push-ups, and many people “| may have viewed these firsts differently, the trip would be our first class trip. Washington, D.C, our nation’s capitol! Who would have guessed that it would be so full of fake Rolex’s and “Fauklies?” Anyhow, I’m sure everyone who was there can remember their own events, for me it all came on the way back from Washington. I’d never seen a thirteen -year old kid hit on a stewardess before. (Thanks Scott). Beyond that, our class gained the great reputation of the first group of students ever to be kicked out of the Lincoln Memorial. There are may other strange and memorable events that one could recall, even if you were sick, or if you were too busy laughing at Mr. Piccini - who arm-wrestled everyone one night. However, the biggest part of the trip was the fact that we were living away from our — parents for the first time, (heck, I enjoyed sleeping in the bathtub) but it was the lack of parental supervision that may have given us some of the funniest moments ever, in class history, like Ms. Bacon getting us stuck in lockdown at the FBI building.

More memorable than Ms. Bacon’s antics would be those of the kid who everyone loved to tease on the Washington trip, Mike Stanley. Throughout the Washington trip, Mike had been on the losing side of some pretty strange events, i.e, Mike gets folded up in cot three times, or Mike puts hot pepper in eye on bet, or the ever popular, Mike laughs at his own underwear being hung out the window. All these events were contained in the excellent, “Book 0’ Stanley,” by Andrew Shadoff. Yet there was one pivotal event that sparked the surge of Mike’s catastrophes, and inspired this remembrance.

We were in the biggest mall on the face of this planet; it was probably about, I don’t know, five acres wide, six acres long and about five stories high. For some reason, I was taking a break from everything, and was relaxing on the top floor, people watching when what could be best described as a human tornado, named Mike Stanley, ran up to me completely distressed, “Have you seen my wallet?” he panted. Before I could even reply Mike took off in a full sprint, nearly running over a mother and her baby. I watched his serpentine progress all the way down the mall, to the bottom floor, as he ran up to group after group of kids, begging for information of his lost wallet. That night, Mike probably covered about ten miles of mall in thirty seconds, twice, breaking the land-speed record. He was inconsolable when we were forced to board the bus, and he was without his wallet. All of us sat down, simultaneously laughing to ourselves and feeling bad for Mike, as is our custom. The bus pulled off and suddenly Mike stood up with a shout, banging his head on the roof, “Hey, I found it! It was on the bus the whole time!” We all laughed and laughed even more as Chris read the “Book o’ Stanley.”

So, as we closed the “Book o’ Stanley,” we closed the book on our former goofy lives in junior school and anticipated a more refined and mature life in high school, I guess...

r an Year r aga

Freshman year we found ourselves again at the bottom of the high school food chain. Things have changed: The kid with the Coke—bottle glasses got contacts; the shy girl who danced has grown up to be a really popular leader of the grade. Things are different all right. The guys wore uniforms, and the girls wore them too. Even though things seemed different, they remained very much the same.

Freshman year was the year that everyone came out of their shells, and became the characters that they are today. I’m almost positive that ninth grade was the year that everyone got the taste of what a party is, even if their parents drove them. Ninth grade was one of those in-between years, when groups of friends changed and reorganized. It was a time for learning new things and trying new things. Everyone learned from Brother Ernie, “Who was that man? Mel Gibson!”

homore Year k, it? kind of town

Sophomore year and we had yet another class trip to look forward to. New York City! New York, New York, what a wonderful town! As sophomores, we would better be able to appreciate the freedom from our parents, plus it was freedom in New York. There couldn’t be a better place to use, and sometimes abuse, our freedom in the biggest city on our coast. We loaded up the buses waiting in the parking lot at Austin, early one cold morning in March. We were still those same clowns who got thrown out of the Lincoln Memorial for jumping off the steps; naturally, we would carry our great ability for goofiness. New York is just another word for trouble; hey, what kind of parents would we turn out to be if we didn’t have at least one crazy story to tell our kids?

There were times on the trip, I’m sure that the teachers would have liked to toss us off the Empire State Building, but hey, you’re only going to be fifteen and free in New York once. Of course, there were times when we were perfect angels. We went nonstop for days, from Times Square, to the tops of The Empire State Building, to the more-fun-thanexpected, wax museum, to the less-fun-than-expected, WWF Restaurant New York, to a lovely nap at a Broadway show, all the way filming people up and down the streets, and all in all aggravating every New Yorker with our Boston accents. Sure we boxed in the hallways, aggravated the other guests, and let some people into rooms where they shouldn’t be, but what’s the point of doing something if you can’t look back and appreciate all the memories, good, bad, right and wrong? That’s what stories are made of.

nior Year l gr

Someone once said very brilliantly, that the test of one’s character comes not in the times in which we live carefree, but the times in which we face horrible distress. As a school, as a group of kids, as a community and as a nation, we faced this distress that has formed our character, seemingly all in one year.

Our Junior year not only marked a turning point in our high school lives, but a change in the way we saw the fragile gift of life in general. Before we could even get settled into another year of academic routine, we were unsettled by tragedy. On September eleventh, we were all sitting down to class, still getting used to the schedule and the teachers. I was still struggling to understand the intricacies of Greek accent and Pre-calculus in Mrs. Georges’ class.

Mr. Moran gravely made the announcement that New York had been attacked, and that we should all pray. What - could we do? The answer was that we could do almost nothing, yet we pulled together, our class knitted tighter as we prayed and contemplated our new world. Crammed into Mr. Hennessey’s class we watched the events unfold, in horror, and grief. A lot of people grew up that day; we became wiser, and more mature.

Mr. McCarthy was and still is one of the most beloved teachers ever to have taught here at Austin. His work and his joy touched everyone he met. All could not help but be inspired by his bravery as he battled disease, while remaining | his happy-go-lucky self. And when his disease finally took him, everyone felt the loss, even if they didn’t know him directly. We all grew, by the acceptance of Mr. McCarthy’s spirit of bravery and humor into our lives.

Our first prom was all it was supposed to be, a beautiful setting, a time to be with friends to relax and to celebrate. ' Yet it seemed that tragedy would strike us again. Austin Prep lost one of its most creative and well liked students. Jeff Flores was a true individual, and his loss at a young age was painful, yet it’s the way that the Austin community reacted | that showed the spirit of the students. When it would have been easy to sink into grief, members of Jeff's family and friends became leaders. Those who knew him, didn’t hold back, but stood up and let the whole world know how truly great } a person Jeff was, and in that, from this tragedy as from the others, Austin and this class’ character was forged.

However, don’t think that the year was all tragedy. Rather, we became the sum of our reactions to the challenges | that life kept forcing upon us. We become a stronger, more mature group of people. Yet we still remained the goofballs we | have always been, even during this year, we could still laugh at everyone’s favorite class clown, Obie, dancing on stage in , spandex and a pompadour, doing splits and cartwheels to Flock of Seagulls. If Junior year here at Austin hadn’t made you i more aware of how precious life is, and how well we have lived it, I don’t know what will.

nior Year (Where ar now?

Where are we now? Seemingly, our journey here at Austin has come to an end. The ending, like the endings of all ; great stories, is bittersweet, sweet in that we look forward to the future yet sad as we look back on all our memories and the people we will be leaving behind as we go our separate ways. But who says that graduating means growing apart? I think | that when you leave somewhere you get a better view of where you have been. Even though you may not see it right now, caught up in the moment as we are, where we are forced to take everything at once good and bad, but when you look back /on your memories, all the petty problems are left out and you see the best memories of your time here and wrap yourself up in them like a blanket, because Austin is a family. We have seen it all, and where as you may leave petty things unresolved with your friends, you’ll make sure you work them out with your family. I say, do that, hold onto what you have and don’t let go. Live for right now, but remember where you came from.
