New school, new people, new attitudes, new workload. Sixth grade was the biggest change most of us had been through up until that point in our lives. It took a while, but we all formed our groups, most of which have lasted through seven years now. Amazing, isn’t : it?
Ask any “lifer” what they remember about sixth grade and this is what they'll say: “When Adam Principato got hit by a car. That was the funniest thing ever!” I guess it was ¢ lasting memory! We also remember Mr. Quartarone (and his politician brother) and Ms. Dube. In our sixth grade yearbooks, the only thing to write was “Hey (name), have a cool summa.”
Sixth grade was when we all said “There is no way we'll ever be as old as the seniors. Look how big they are!” Sixth grade was when “walking to the trash barrel” meant there was some piece of juicy gossip that couldn’t wait. Sixth grade was, “We are never going to |) grow up. College what?”
By seventh grade, people had begun to find their places. The groups had one final switch: and then everyone was settled. I remember being surprised at how easily the new kids fit in with the old ones. Mr. Buccini came in seventh grade, to moderate us. No one told him that we really didn’t need moderation. After all, we had Ms. Lupi to keep us in check in Latin class! We had the Seventh Grade Bowling Social (Zack Dearth: No Caroline, I will NOT make out with you!) and Dizzy Lizzy Land.
A favorite memory from seventh grade is when “Helen Keller” visited our school to give | a presentation. Justin Mitchell let out a loud screech when the woman spoke after the performance. It was something to the effect of “AHHH...OH MY GOD, SHE TALKS??"
Eighth grade brought the most relaxed dress code in our memories of Austin, a far cry from the uniforms of today. No more ties for the boys, and murder for the girls. It’s true we got away with everything...EVERYTHING.
We also went on the Washington, D.C. trip, fond memories all around. The only song to sing was Blink 182’s “Dammit”, with the exception of Jeff Flores’ beautiful rendition of “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. And who could forget the dance, complete with snobby Californians? Amanda Kwolyk won the dance contest though, which put those West Coasters right in their place. EAST SIDE! Another great time was the Great Nate Aznoian/ Joseph Gangestad Arm Wrestling Match (Joe won!).
I think we had six expulsions in eighth grade. And everone was convinced that Miss Bacon and Mr. Mayo were going to get married soon. And Justin Hoff and Zack Dearth signed up for football cheerleading. What a bizarre year that was! Not to mention all the relationships that formed. A few favorites: Ali Barker and Jason Ostrowski. Jessica Lapierre and Jason Ostrowski. Niki Tocco and Jason Ostrowski (twice!). Lea Bancarotta and Jason Ostrowski. Jessica Shea and Matt Devito. Jessica Shea and Zack Dearth. Jane Maguire and Nate Aznoian. Jane Maguire and Matt Devito. Caitlyn Dickinson and Dave Foley went out for an obscenely long time. But the prize goes to Kara Degregorio and Jussin Hoff - who broke up and got back together seven times!
Again, another change. The core of our grade stayed the same, but this was a huge transition, for new and old kids. Old students had to learn how to live with fifty new people, while obviously the new kids had to learn..well, everything!
Frosh year started our with a bang, with the seniors protesting the lunch prices. They made and sold peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at their table, until Ms. Gannon put a prompt stop to it. However, about six people bought lunch that day. The prices continued to go up but the point was made.
All we said that year was, “Do you wanna buy a duck? A what? A duck. Does it quack? Of course it quacks!”
Caitlyn Dickinson gave Mr. Capone the tip of the day when she told him to “burn the sweater.” We also dissected sharks in Biology that year, making a game of throwing the «parts at each other. Ian James made a “liver lollipop” - and how appealing it was. lan James also punched his hand through a glass window - and how appealing that was. Ali -Tayarani got his car stuck in the mud outside and came in covered head to toe in it. How appealing that was!
Frosh year also brought our first real semi-formal..the talk of the grade for many months before. And DocBoc’s geometry classes, from which Jessica was ejected due to her “chalk on the pants” comment, and the first time any of us had Mr. McCarthy as a teacher. And who could forget the senior “prank” that year -consisting of rotting fish, mayonnaise, surprises in the trash barrels, and the freshman (yes, our) lockers? Cougars 117
Tenth grade has been voted our favorite, by most people.Austin won the Division 6 Super Bowl, our hockey team made the Super Eight, ending up at number three in the state! Superfans ran rampant that year (including our official Superfan- some random guy!)
Sophomore year marked the last of Mia Lazarewicz’s three Halloween parties, and the start of- you guessed it- Flynnies! Unanimously considered to be the greatest change Austin’s made in all of our seven years, the Flynnies are cherished and appreciated by all. The Argentines (though we all said “Argentinians”) visited for the first time during sophomore year, provoking Liz Asta to ask, “So, where in Spain are you from?” And we had the class ski trip to Smuggler’s Notch that year. Mr. Powell picked up a sweet snowboarding bunny, who is now engaged- to someone else. Ouch. The ski trip was the second time our grade went away somewhere, and, as the Washington trip had done, it made us all closer as our groups were forgotten and new friendships were made. One great memory from Smuggler’s Notch was when Matt Keniston jumped out the window because “the snowbank looked like a swimming pool!”
The first thing Mr. Moran said to us at the beginning of our junior year was, “Remember! how you felt on your first day of freshmen year? Well, the time from then until now is exactly how long you have until you graduate.” Suddenly, we were growing up. No one realized how close senior year, graduation, and college were getting. Thank you, Mr. Moran, for that stinging slap to the face. I distinctly remember the day we all got our PSAT scores back and everyone was crying, insisting we weren’t going to get into college. One hallmark of junior year was Jubilee Justice Day, a day for the school to collect and reflect. This was supposed to be held in the new Multi-purpose Facility, but unless they wanted us to sit in a giant hole in the ground, that wasn’t happening. So Austin rented a “heated tent” for the occasion. ‘Nuff said. Another hallmark was 2/9/01, which was both the date of the bomb threat and Eliana Nader’s best party of the century. 300 kids missed school that day and I’d say the number attending the party was near that. Good times. We also had our Prom that year, something everyone talked excitedly about. Everything about it was beautiful, definitely a night to remember. Liz Asta, R.J. O’Brien, Lea Bancarotta, and Mike Parr made Junior Prom Court that year.
Though not through yet, this year has been full of commotion, chaos, and closeness. mmediately after the year began, September 11th came along and we will never be the same because of it. Then we went on the final retreat of our Austin lives- for some of us, it was our seventh. But it impacted everyone, as we all got up and told our favorite stories of he past. Everyone seems to be closer to their classmates this year. We have been blessed with a smart and sociable class. So soon, too soon, after the retreat, we lost our beloved Mr. McCarthy on 10/4/01. The unbelievable and intense shows of support carried our class hrough the toughest times we've seen.
As mentioned before, we are all lucky to be part of a class in which everyone loves everyme else. People have come and gone in every single circle; there have been fights ( Mikki v. syndsey) and tears, but many more smiles and laughter. I wouldn't trade anyone in the lass of 2002 for anything, for know that no matter where life take each of us, we'll always ave the memories of our years together.
