1983 Austin Prep Yearbook

Page 1

In this twentieth year of Austin Prep, we would like to dedicate this anniversary edition to Father Thomas Kenny, who has lent a guiding hand in our four years here at Austin. He has said that we’re his class, and we are proud to be so called.

Twenty years ago, Austin Prep officially opened its doors to its first freshman class. As the first freshman class became the first senior class, a noticeable change had occurred in the character of its students. It seemed that Austin Preparatory School was ‘where boys walk in and men walk out.’ The senior class thought that to be so true that the motto was inscribed on a plaque. Not only does the plaque still hang, but the saying still rings true.

As the high school career of the class of 1983 winds down to a close, perhaps we should take a minute to pause and reflect on the school which in the past four years has become our “‘second home”. As the 18th graduating class of Austin Preparatory School, we have left our mark on Austin just as Austin has left its own special mark on us. For four years we have faced problems, and solved them, had good times, had bad times, but we’ve made it.

As we started our senior year, we realized that four years went by faster than we had expected — perhaps too fast. Soon the “‘school that I’m going to” will become “my old high school” or ‘alma mater’. However, we will always be ‘Men of Austin’, for it will show in our character, in our pride, in our bearing and in our awareness: we have become Austin Prep.

OMEGA

Hopefully, by the time you read this letter you will still be in school. As usual, the same things that have hit the Omega staffs in the past have hit this one. For example: “the deadly OMEGA Syndrome which preys on overworked, undernourished editors facing deadlines.” “The LEGENDaires Disease,

this slow moving and cruel agent, attacks only those people who have come in contact with the school — Activities Editor newspaper.” Photogeritice — causing photo editors to lose film canisters which have valuable pictures

in them.

We arrived in December ready to go to work. With a full staff of 25 including editors, we were on our way to the 1983 yearbook. However, when the first deadline arrived, no one was ready to meet it. So a few of the editors and myself got together one Sunday for five hours to put together the first 16 pages.

As the year progressed, the staff dwindled down to 12 editors only. Do not let the number fool you, because we made 3 out of 4 deadlines (only missing one deadline because two duplicate pages were sent in). Because of missing film canisters, the activities and underclassmen sections had to be altered.

Patiently putting up with us and constantly pushing us to our extremes, co-moderators, Mrs. Moulton and Mrs. Struthers, made sure the yearbook would be in on time, and hopefully it will be. I would like to say, “Thanks” from the entire Omega staff and editors to these most determined ladies. Their patience and helpfulness were greatly appreciated. And also I would like to thank Kip Carbone and Francis Hyatt for their help.

To the 1984 Omega staff, “Good Luck”, and believe me you will need it!! Don’t put off until tomorrow, what you can do today.

All-star John Lewis kills the opponent’s drive

When the pre-season opened, it looked as though the varsity football team had a new life and character. The team went 2-0 in the preseason scrimmages. The season opened against the three toughest teams in the Catholic Conference: Catholic Memorial, B.C. High and St. John’s. Austin’s defense seemed to be the bright spot for the team. Austin won its next two games against Bishop Fenwick and Boston English. In the first night game in Austin’s history the team lost a close battle in the final seconds. Austin ended its 3-7 season with a victory against Pope John. The team was led this year by Larry Branco and Greg Stratis.

The returning core for next year includes Steve Schmitt, Matt Shea, Mike Falite, and Mark Buckley.

Winter Track

The winter track team ended up in second place in their league with a 5-2 record. They were led by Mike Higgins. There were several standouts on the team this season including; Rick Stoeher, Mark LaPlante, and Mike Higgins. Special congratulations are due to Owen Lawlor who had a perfect season, going undefeated in the 50-yard dash. In the state coaches meet, the relay teams did extremely well, setting new school records in two events.

1982 SOCCER

The Cougars entered their new league with high hopes and wound up with a 7-8-2 record, capturing fourth place. The team was led by co-captains Mike Higgins and Chris McCann, and coached by Father Johnson in his second year at the helm.

Mike Stalker and Bill Lewis anchored a strong defense while Ken See and Joe Brine controlled the midfield. Strong showings were put in by forwards Mark Miller and Bill Moody, backed up by the Korean connection of Ha Chun Chun and Chol Ho Hwang. Austin seemed to be on a roll until they faced Xaverian and lost a hearbreaker 2-1. They sputtered but picked up again to finish off a disappointing but respectable season.
